Abandoned cart recovery: the best tools in 2026

Ten tools compared, the flows that win sales back, ready-to-adapt messages, and the settings you only find on forums.

Seven carts out of ten never reach payment. To win some of them back you need three things: a tool that can send the reminder, a short sequence (three messages over 48 to 72 hours) and the right settings. The short answer: on Shopify, switch on the free Shopify Messaging recovery first, then move to Klaviyo once you have volume, or to Omnisend if you want email and SMS without tuning every detail. Building an SMS list in the US? Postscript. On WooCommerce, the free Cart Abandonment Recovery plugin.

The ranking

The 10 best tools to recover abandoned carts

We compared every tool on the same job, from its docs, settings and user reviews: one abandoned cart, three messages, a discount kept for the last one. Scores judge the tool on this one job, not in general: a great email platform can be average at cart recovery.

Five sub-scores make the score: setup (time until a first reminder goes out), flows (delays, filters, branches), channels (email, SMS, push, WhatsApp), value for money at 500 contacts, and how well you can track recovered revenue. On a tie, the tool with more channels ranks first.

Most complete for Shopify

Klaviyo

4.6/5

Klaviyo is the tool we find in most Shopify stores that take recovery seriously, and our comparison shows why. It is one of the few to ship two separate flows out of the box, one on Added to Cart and one on Started Checkout (once the email is typed in on the checkout page), with filters that stop a shopper from getting both. The free plan covers 250 active profiles, 500 email sends a month and a small monthly allowance of SMS credits: enough to prove a real sequence before you pay.

For US texts, Klaviyo's own compliance rules are strict: double opt-in, one SMS per recipient in a cart flow, sent within 48 hours of the abandon. Its weak spot is pricing. You pay per active profile, meaning everyone who can receive your marketing emails, whether they buy or not. A list you never clean pushes the bill up without earning a dollar. Suppress cold profiles regularly: suppressed and unsubscribed profiles don't count.

Standout features
  • Two triggers: Added to Cart and Started Checkout
  • Default filter that removes a shopper the moment they order
  • Email and SMS in the same flow, with revenue attributed per message
  • Cart templates with product images and a back-to-checkout button
+Pros
  • ✓The most granular recovery we compared
  • ✓Recovered revenue readable message by message
  • ✓Free plan big enough to validate the sequence
−Cons
  • ✗Priced per active profile: a dormant list gets expensive
  • ✗The Added to Cart flow can't show the back-to-cart button without a started checkout
  • ✗Smart Sending, if on for the flow, blocks some reminders (16-hour window by default)
Verdict

For you if you run Shopify with volume and have time to set filters. Not for you if your list is big and inactive: the price follows profiles, not sales.

Easiest email and SMS

Omnisend

4.4/5

Omnisend is what we recommend to someone who has never built a flow. The cart abandonment workflow is already written, delays included, and it comes with the free plan (250 contacts, 500 emails a month). Standard costs $16 a month at full price for 500 contacts, with unlimited web push. SMS runs on credits added to the Pro plan ($59 a month at full price), billed from $0.009 down to $0.007 per US text depending on how many you buy.

That US rate is the trap for anyone selling abroad. The SMS estimate shown at signup uses US pricing, and a text to the UK costs more: merchants report draining their credits on the first campaign. Another pain point from reviews: a one-off top-up goes through chat and can take 4 to 8 hours.

Standout features
  • Cart abandonment workflow ready on every plan
  • Email, SMS and web push in one flow
  • Sensible SMS sending window on by default
+Pros
  • ✓Fastest setup in our comparison
  • ✓Free plan already includes the cart flow
  • ✓Unlimited web push from Standard
−Cons
  • ✗SMS estimates use US rates: check your country price
  • ✗Manual, slow credit top-ups
  • ✗Standard capped at 6,000 emails a month for 500 contacts
Verdict

For you if you want recovery running tonight. Not for you if you text a lot outside the US and haven't done the math.

Cheapest paid email plan

Brevo

4.0/5

Brevo (formerly Sendinblue) is priced on emails sent rather than list size. The free plan gives you 300 emails a day, and Starter begins around $9 a month for 5,000 emails, roughly 10% less if you pay yearly. For cart recovery, Brevo ships ready-made workflow templates: you pick the abandoned cart event as the entry point, the wait time and the email. Your store has to send its events to Brevo, through the Shopify or WooCommerce app or its tracker.

Two things to know. Starter caps automated workflows at 2,000 contacts, and the Brevo logo stays on your emails unless you pay for the branding add-on. No official page says plainly whether the cart template sits on the free plan, so build the workflow on free first: you'll know at once if it asks you to upgrade.

Its weak spot here: recovered revenue tracking is lighter than Klaviyo's. See our Brevo pricing breakdown for every tier, and our full Brevo review for the rest.

Standout features
  • Abandoned cart workflow template ready to fill
  • Email, SMS and order emails on one platform
  • Pricing on volume sent, not on list size
+Pros
  • ✓Lowest paid entry price among full platforms
  • ✓Transactional and marketing email in one place
  • ✓Usable free plan
−Cons
  • ✗Automation capped at 2,000 contacts on Starter
  • ✗Plan that includes the cart template to confirm before buying
  • ✗Lighter recovered revenue tracking
Verdict

For you if you want one cheap tool for recovery, newsletters and receipts. Not for you if you want to optimize each message to the cent.

Best free starting point

Shopify Messaging

3.9/5

If your store runs on Shopify and you have no recovery at all, switch this on today. Abandoned checkout emails sent by Shopify never count toward your 10,000 free emails a month: they cost nothing. A checkout counts as abandoned once it stays incomplete for more than ten minutes after the email is entered, and you set the send delay yourself.

Two traps merchants find on the Shopify forum. First, the automation only writes to customers who accepted marketing: if your checkout signup box is rarely ticked, most of your carts get nothing. Second, once the automation is on, you can no longer send a manual recovery email from the abandoned checkouts list.

Standout features
  • Zero cost, zero install
  • Abandoned checkout email report: sessions, orders, conversion rate
  • Adjustable send delay
+Pros
  • ✓Free and native
  • ✓Live in ten minutes
  • ✓Solid base before a dedicated tool
−Cons
  • ✗Only writes to marketing subscribers
  • ✗No segmentation by cart value
  • ✗No manual sends once the automation is on
Verdict

For you if you have nothing yet. Not for you if you want several flows, SMS or a discount kept for big carts.

Best for cart recovery plus CRM

ActiveCampaign

3.8/5

ActiveCampaign didn't start as an ecommerce tool: it's an automation platform with a CRM. For cart recovery, that's the point. Abandoned cart is a trigger on every plan, and the cart lands in the contact record, where a sales rep can pick it up for a business buyer.

The setting to know: on Shopify, the delay before a cart counts as abandoned lives in the integration (Settings, Integrations, Shopify, Manage), one hour by default. And the trap: a cart only reaches ActiveCampaign if the shopper got to the shipping information step. Someone who adds to cart and leaves never enters your sequence, hence reminders that "don't send".

Its weak spot: no free plan, per-contact pricing that climbs fast, and SMS only as a paid add-on from the Plus plan. For a B2C Shopify store, Klaviyo or Omnisend are quicker. Compare it with Brevo in our ActiveCampaign vs Brevo comparison.

Standout features
  • Abandoned cart available from the first plan
  • Cart visible in the built-in CRM
  • Very rich conditional automations
+Pros
  • ✓Recovery and sales follow-up in one place
  • ✓Strong automation for B2B cases
  • ✓Full 14-day trial
−Cons
  • ✗No free plan
  • ✗SMS only as an add-on, from Plus
  • ✗Fewer ready-made ecommerce templates
Verdict

For you if an abandoned cart can turn into a sales call. Not for you if you only sell online to consumers.

Best SMS list builder in the US

Postscript

3.7/5

Postscript is a Shopify SMS platform built for the US market, and its cart recovery reflects US carrier rules. A cart recovery automation holds exactly one text, sent within 48 hours of the abandon, and the same subscriber can only re-enter every 72 hours. That feels restrictive until you remember carriers can block programs that over-text.

Pricing is per message. Starter has no monthly fee but a $49 monthly minimum spend, at $0.009 per SMS and $0.045 per MMS. Growth is $100 a month at $0.008 per SMS. Carrier fees come on top (about $0.0033 per SMS on average in the US and Canada). Postscript verifies a toll-free number for free; a dedicated short code is passed through at the carriers' $750 a month, only worth it at serious volume.

Standout features
  • One compliant cart text, sent within 48 hours
  • Free verified toll-free number
  • Per-message pricing with a low entry point
+Pros
  • ✓Built around US SMS compliance
  • ✓Cheap entry for a real SMS program
  • ✓$100 of credit to test
−Cons
  • ✗Only one SMS per cart flow
  • ✗Carrier fees on top of every message
  • ✗US and Canada focused, Shopify only
Verdict

For you if you sell in the US and want to grow an SMS list. Not for you if your buyers are in the UK or Europe: CartBoss or Omnisend fit better.

Best SMS with no subscription

CartBoss

3.6/5

CartBoss does one thing: send abandoned cart texts. There's no subscription; you pay for each message based on the recipient's country, and its price list is in euros. It's the right tool to test SMS without committing to a plan full of email features you don't need, while you keep your current email platform.

Run the numbers first: price per text swings a lot by country (€0.025 to the US, €0.0557 to the UK, €0.1484 to Germany). And as with any marketing text, you need the shopper's consent before the abandon, written consent in the US.

Standout features
  • Pay as you go, no plan
  • Runs next to your email tool
  • Shopify and WooCommerce
+Pros
  • ✓Lowest-risk way to test SMS
  • ✓No cost when nothing sends
  • ✓Specialized, so simple
−Cons
  • ✗Price per text varies a lot by country
  • ✗No email, so a second tool to coordinate
  • ✗Revenue tracked apart from your emails
Verdict

For you if you want to test SMS for a month. Not for you if you want one tool for everything.

Best for anonymous visitors

Brevo PushOwl

3.5/5

An email or text reminder needs an address or a number. The visitor who adds to cart and closes the tab without typing anything slips away. Web push catches them, as long as they accepted notifications on your site. Brevo PushOwl, an app built for Shopify, does exactly that.

Watch the free plan: it gives 500 impressions a month but no cart recovery. Recovery starts on Plus, $19 a month for 10,000 impressions. The bill follows usage, not the size of your subscriber list. Browse abandonment needs the Power plan, from $79 a month. When we checked, the app was no longer listed on the Shopify App Store: install it from the PushOwl site.

Standout features
  • Recovery with no email or number
  • Usage-based billing
  • Adds to an existing email recovery
+Pros
  • ✓Reaches carts no email can
  • ✓Set up in minutes
  • ✓Clear pricing by impression tier
−Cons
  • ✗No recovery on the free plan
  • ✗Depends on notification opt-ins
  • ✗Short message, no rich cart visual
Verdict

For you if you get lots of mobile traffic that never leaves an email. Not as a first tool: start with email.

Best free for WooCommerce

Cart Abandonment Recovery (CartFlows)

3.5/5

On WooCommerce, the simplest recovery lives inside WordPress. The free Cart Abandonment Recovery plugin, from the team behind CartFlows, has over 300,000 active installs. It sends a series of emails at adjustable intervals (15 minutes, one hour, 24 hours), generates unique coupon codes and adds a GDPR consent checkbox at checkout, handy if you sell to the UK.

Its weak spot: emails leave from your WordPress server, so deliverability depends on your sending service (plug in a proper SMTP service). The free version already has a recovered carts dashboard. Pro adds detailed email tracking (opens, clicks, unsubscribes), sending rules and SMS.

Standout features
  • Unique single-use coupon codes
  • Consent checkbox at checkout
  • Multi-email sequence for free
+Pros
  • ✓Free, with a recovered carts dashboard
  • ✓Unique codes that don't leak to coupon sites
  • ✓Everything stays in WordPress
−Cons
  • ✗Deliverability is on you
  • ✗Detailed email tracking and SMS in Pro
  • ✗WooCommerce only
Verdict

For you if you run WooCommerce on a tight budget. Not for you if you want email and SMS managed in one place.

Cart recovery on WhatsApp

WATI

3.2/5

WhatsApp is a real recovery channel where your customers open it more than their inbox. That's rarely the case for US buyers, more often for international ones. WATI offers a Shopify app for WhatsApp cart recovery: automated flows, discounts, order updates and cash-on-delivery order checks. Growth costs $69 a month ($708 a year), Pro $149, Business $349.

Its weak spot is total cost. Each WhatsApp message is billed on top, by country, and extra users cost $89 a month on Pro and Business. The app holds 3.7 out of 5 from 120 reviews: one in five is a single star, often about support or messages that stop sending. And as with SMS, you need the customer's permission to message them on WhatsApp. Our full WATI review covers the rest.

Standout features
  • WhatsApp cart recovery on Shopify
  • Cash-on-delivery order verification
  • Discounts and order updates in the same thread
+Pros
  • ✓Reaches customers who rarely read email
  • ✓Conversation possible after the reminder
  • ✓7-day trial on every plan
−Cons
  • ✗Messages billed on top of the plan
  • ✗Support criticized in reviews
  • ✗Extra users are pricey
Verdict

For you if your customers live on WhatsApp. Not for you if you sell in the US to buyers reachable by email: start with email. More options in our ranking of WhatsApp chatbots for ecommerce.

The flows that work

Six recovery flows, plus what comes before and around them

The tool matters less than the sequence. First, how to get carts you can recover, then the flows we recommend, with delays, sample messages and the tool that does each best.

To know your starting point, work out your abandonment rate: (carts created minus orders) divided by carts created. To measure what recovery earns, tag each message with its own UTM parameter (for example utm_campaign=cart-recovery): in Google Analytics, sales from that campaign are your recovered revenue, a useful check on your tool's report, which tends to claim everything.

01

Before any reminder: get carts you can recover

Lever no. 1

A reminder needs an email or a phone number. The best sequence settings do nothing if most of your carts are anonymous. Before you touch delays, work on these four points.

  1. Ask for the email first at checkout. As soon as it's typed in, the cart becomes recoverable, even if the shopper leaves at the next step.
  2. Capture the email earlier, from the home page, with a signup popup or an exit-intent popup. For texts, collect the number with its own opt-in.
  3. Remove what makes people leave: 40% of shoppers who abandon cite extra costs, 18% a forced account. Show shipping on the product page and allow guest checkout.
  4. Add retargeting ads (Meta, Google) for visitors without an email. No address needed, but too many impressions feel like stalking: cap frequency and duration.

02

The base sequence: three emails over three days

For everyone

This is the sequence we recommend first, whatever the tool. Each message has a different job, and that's why it works: the same reminder three times wears people out, three different angles convince them.

  1. Message 1, 30 minutes to 4 hours after the abandon: the reminder. Product image, name, price, a button back to the full cart. No discount, no pressure. Some guides say write within 30 minutes, while the shopper is still at the screen; others start at 2 to 4 hours. Go early for impulse buys, later for considered ones.
  2. Message 2, around 24 hours: handle the objection. 40% of shoppers who abandon cite extra costs (shipping, tax), 18% a forced account, 19% not trusting the site with their card. This message answers that: shipping, delivery time, free returns, guest checkout, reviews.
  3. Message 3, 48 to 72 hours: last call. The only place a discount can make sense, and only if your margin allows. Otherwise suggest a similar product or simply ask what got in the way.

Examples to adapt to your brand:

  • Message 1, subject: "Forgot something?". SMS: "[Brand]: your cart is saved for you. [link] Reply STOP to opt out".
  • Message 2, subject: "Free shipping and free returns on your order". SMS (UK only, since US rules allow one cart text): "[Brand]: questions about sizing or delivery? Reply here. [link] Opt out: [link]".
  • Message 3, subject: "Last reminder for your cart".

Keep each text under 160 characters with no emoji or curly quotes: a single character outside the standard GSM alphabet drops the limit to 70 characters per segment, and you pay for two. Three good messages beat a six-step sequence that burns your list.

03

Email + SMS: one text within the hour, email to convince

If you have SMS subscribers

The two channels don't play the same role. On average, an abandoned cart email earns $6.77 per recipient against $4.48 for a text, but texts get more clicks (10.3% vs 6%). Top stores double those numbers: $13.70 per recipient for email.

The sequence we recommend: one short text within the hour ("Your cart is waiting", a link, your brand), then the 24-hour email with the arguments, then the last-call email. The text catches shoppers while the cart is fresh; the email carries images and answers.

Market rules decide the rest. In the US, keep it to one cart text per person within 48 hours, double opt-in, inside the 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. window of the recipient's time zone (narrower in states like Florida), with STOP instructions; Klaviyo and Postscript both enforce one text. In the UK, PECR treats texts like email: consent, or the soft opt-in for past customers, plus an opt-out in every message. If you send from your brand name as sender ID, people can't reply STOP, so the opt-out is a link.

Two triggers: Added to Cart and Started Checkout

Klaviyo

A shopper who typed their email at checkout and one who only clicked "Add to cart" are not at the same stage. The first was two clicks from paying; the second was still browsing. Sending them the same message is a mistake we see everywhere.

The setup Klaviyo's team recommends on its community forum: two flows. Started Checkout gets the full sequence. Added to Cart gets a softer reminder, with a "Started Checkout zero times since starting this flow" filter so nobody gets both. On Shopify, Started Checkout syncs by itself; Added to Cart needs onsite tracking.

One limit: in the Added to Cart flow, the button back to the full cart isn't available on Shopify until the shopper has started checkout. Link to the product page instead.

Big carts: slower, more helpful, no discount

High order value

A $30 cart and a $900 cart don't get the same follow-up. On an expensive product, shoppers compare, ask someone, wait for payday. Hitting them three times in 48 hours with a discount mostly tells them your price was padded.

Our recommendation: a later first message (4 hours rather than one), a second with detailed reviews, a warranty, a comparison or a usage video, and a third that offers to answer questions, from a real name and a real reply-to address. If you want a gesture, free shipping or an accessory costs less than a percentage off and doesn't cheapen the product.

In Klaviyo or Omnisend, add a branch on cart value: below your average order value, the base sequence; above it, the long one. It's also the only case where an incentive really makes sense.

Browse abandonment: useful, but a third as profitable

Add-on

A known shopper (subscriber or identified customer) who viewed a product without adding it can get a message too. Be realistic though: a browse abandonment email earns $2.08 per recipient on average, about a third of a cart reminder. It comes after, never before.

Our rule: one message, 24 hours after the visit, showing the viewed product and two similar ones, no discount. Exclude anyone already in a cart flow and limit entry to once a week. Otherwise a shopper who browses daily gets an email daily, and unsubscribes.

The anonymous visitor: web push

No email

Email and SMS only reach carts where the shopper left contact details. Everything else is lost, unless the visitor accepted your site's notifications. A web push can then remind them of their cart, no address or number needed.

The sequence: one push at 30 minutes or an hour, a second the next day, that's it. One line plus the product image. With Brevo PushOwl, recovery starts on Plus ($19 a month for 10,000 impressions); Omnisend includes unlimited push from Standard. Push doesn't replace email; it covers what email can't see.

Real cost at the same size: 500 contacts, email and US texts

To compare

Vendor price grids don't read the same way. Here is the entry price for a store with about 500 contacts, then the price of a US text where it's published.

  • Shopify Messaging: $0 for recovery emails, never counted toward your 10,000 free monthly emails.
  • Brevo: about $9 a month for 5,000 emails.
  • Omnisend: $16 a month at full price (Standard, 500 contacts, 6,000 emails). SMS needs Pro, $59 a month, plus credits from $0.009 per US text.
  • Klaviyo: about $20 a month for 251 to 500 profiles on email, about $35 with SMS.
  • ActiveCampaign: about $15 a month for 1,000 contacts, billed yearly, no SMS on that plan.
  • Postscript: $0.009 per text plus carrier fees, with a $49 monthly minimum spend.
  • CartBoss, next to an email tool: €0.025 per US text, €0.0557 per UK text, no subscription.

Do the math on your case: 500 US cart texts a month cost about €12.50 at CartBoss, while Postscript bills at least $49. Flat plans like WATI's only pay off with real volume.

FAQ · 8 questions

Abandoned cart recovery: your questions, our answers

  • Can I text an abandoned cart reminder in the US without consent?

No. A cart reminder is a marketing text, and the TCPA requires prior express written consent before you send it. A phone number typed in for shipping is not consent. Collect it with a separate, unchecked opt-in that says texts are recurring, automated and not a condition of purchase. Klaviyo also asks US senders to use double opt-in, send one cart SMS per person and send it within 48 hours of the abandoned session, or carriers may block the program.

  • What are the rules for abandoned basket emails and texts in the UK?

PECR treats email and SMS the same way: you need consent, unless the soft opt-in applies. That exception covers people who bought, or negotiated to buy, a similar product from you, and who got a simple way to opt out when you collected their details and in every message. A first-time visitor who added to basket is the grey zone, and the regulator reads the exception narrowly. The safe setup is a clear opt-in box at checkout plus an opt-out in every message.

  • What hours can I send cart recovery texts?

In the recipient's local time, roughly 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. under the TCPA, and narrower in some states: Florida, for example, allows 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. A one-hour SMS reminder at 11 p.m. is the classic mistake. Turn on your tool's quiet hours so late-night abandons wait until morning. For the UK, Klaviyo suggests avoiding sends before 8 or 9 a.m. and after 8 p.m.

  • Do I need a short code, a toll-free number or 10DLC for cart SMS?

For most stores, no short code. A verified toll-free number or a registered 10DLC long code is enough to start, and some platforms verify the toll-free number for you at no cost. A dedicated short code costs around $750 a month through the carriers and only pays off at high volume. In the UK, many stores send from an alphanumeric sender ID (your brand name): people can't reply STOP to it, so add an unsubscribe link.

  • Why aren't my Shopify abandoned checkout emails sending?

Most of the time, because Shopify's automation only writes to customers who accepted marketing. If your checkout signup box is rarely ticked, almost nobody gets the reminder. Also check that the trigger is "customer abandons checkout" and test with a subscribed address.

  • What recovery rate should I expect from abandoned cart emails?

No public number holds for every store, so be wary of anyone promising one. The most reliable measure is revenue per recipient: $6.77 on average for an abandoned cart email, roughly double for the best stores. Compare your own sequence month over month rather than against an average.

  • When should the first abandoned cart email go out?

Between 30 minutes and 4 hours after the abandon, depending on the product. The more impulsive the purchase, the earlier you write. On Shopify, a checkout only counts as abandoned after ten minutes, then your "Send after" setting decides. Test two delays for a month and keep the one with the higher revenue per recipient, not the higher open rate.

  • Can abandoned cart emails hurt my deliverability?

Yes, if they go to mistyped addresses or to people who never asked for them. A high complaint rate on this flow drags down every email you send. Send from the same authenticated domain as your other emails, stop the sequence at the first order, and never retry an address that bounced.
