What's the best email marketing software for a small business in 2026?
Pick on list size and sending rhythm, not on the feature list.
Your newsletter still goes out from Outlook in BCC, or your current tool costs more every year while your list stays flat. Email marketing software sends your campaigns, handles unsubscribes, tracks opens and automates follow-ups.
We compared six tools with public pricing. Short answer: Brevo if your list is big and you send a few times a month, MailerLite if you want the simplest tool, ActiveCampaign if you nurture leads, Sender if you have under 2,500 contacts.
The ranking is editorial: a sponsored placement is always labeled on its card, and no affiliate link changes a score.

How we compared and scored
This page is for a small business that sends newsletters and a few automated emails to customers and leads: a local service, an agency, a B2B software company, a clinic. It isn't about Shopify stores, which have their own page, or cold outreach.
We read each vendor's pricing tier by tier, then user reviews, starting with the negative ones: suspended accounts, rejected signups, price hikes. A tool only makes the list if its price is readable on its official page and it can send a campaign to a full list.
The five criteria match our full reviews, so a tool's score is the same everywhere on the site: ease of use, value for money, feature depth (automation, segmentation, A/B tests), support and integrations. For small businesses we read value and ease of use as the deciding pair, because they decide whether the tool gets used every month.
- Ease of useEmail editor, building a workflow, time to first send.25%
- Value for moneyCost at 2,500 and 10,000 contacts, free plan, branding, seats.25%

ActiveCampaign
ActiveCampaign is for businesses that want email to work on its own. Its automation builder handles conditions, waits, goals and lead scoring, so you can follow up with the prospect who viewed your pricing page instead of blasting your whole list.
The sticker price is low: $15 a month billed yearly for 1,000 contacts on Starter. The real starting point is Plus at $49, which adds landing pages, SMS and unlimited automation steps. Then the price follows your contacts: Plus reaches $145 a month at 5,000 contacts. Pipelines and deals are a paid add-on from about $39 a month. Add it all up: Plus with the CRM add-on and a second user lands around $100 a month.
- Branching automations with goals
- Lead scoring
- 900+ integrations
- ✓Deepest automation on this list
- ✓About 20% off with yearly billing
- ✓Contact migration help
- ✗No free plan
- ✗Price climbs with contacts
- ✗CRM pipelines cost extra
The pick for a business that nurtures leads over weeks. If you mostly send a newsletter, you're overpaying: take Brevo or MailerLite.
Brevo
Brevo (formerly Sendinblue) bills on how many emails you send, not how many contacts you store. The free plan holds up to 100,000 contacts and sends 300 emails a day. If you have 8,000 customers and mail them once a month, that pricing model saves you real money compared with per-contact tools.
Starter costs $9 a month for 5,000 emails, keeps the Brevo logo unless you pay $12 a month more, and allows one user. Standard at $18 removes the automation cap, adds A/B tests and allows three users. Watch the tiers: a 3,000-contact list forces the 20,000-email tier, which is $32 on Starter and $69 on Standard. Brevo also sends transactional email (receipts, password resets), which MailerLite and Mailchimp handle less comfortably.
- Pay per email sent, not per contact
- Email, SMS, WhatsApp and transactional
- Free CRM included
- ✓Most generous free plan for contacts
- ✓Transactional email in the same account
- ✓Unlimited automation from Standard
- ✗Users report fast account suspensions
- ✗Logo removal costs $12/mo on Starter
- ✗$320 a month jump from Standard to Pro at 150,000 emails
The safest default for a small business with a big list and a steady, not weekly, sending rhythm. Warm up your domain before the first large send: that's when suspensions happen.
MailerLite
MailerLite is the tool you learn in an afternoon. The drag-and-drop editor is clear, forms and landing pages are included, and the workflow builder stays readable as you add steps. It fits a business with no dedicated email marketer.
The free plan covers 250 subscribers and 2,500 emails a month, with two seats and three active automations of up to five steps. Comfort starts at $12 a month and Power at $25, with 10% off yearly. The catch: MailerLite reviews every new account. Reviewers say a site that's "under construction" or a brand-new domain often gets rejected, so launch your website before you sign up.
- Very readable drag-and-drop editor
- Forms, pop-ups and landing pages included
- Two seats on the free plan
- ✓Fastest learning curve here
- ✓Low entry price
- ✓Clean, focused feature set
- ✗Strict account approval at signup
- ✗Free plan capped at 250 subscribers
- ✗No transactional email in the marketing plans
The best pick if you want a newsletter plus two or three simple automations without living in the tool. For lead scoring, move up to ActiveCampaign.
Mailchimp
Mailchimp is the name every freelancer and agency knows, with a huge integration library, polished templates and clear reports. For a small business, the issue is price and how it's calculated.
The free plan keeps 250 contacts and 500 emails a month. Essentials starts at $13 a month, with customer journeys capped at 4 steps. Standard starts at $20 and opens 200-step journeys. Two traps show up in reviews. Many listed prices are introductory rates for 12 months before regular pricing kicks in. And Mailchimp bills for contacts in your audience, unsubscribes included unless you archive them. Clean up every quarter.
- Huge integration library
- Polished templates and reports
- Send-time by contact time zone
- ✓Every vendor and freelancer knows it
- ✓Strong templates
- ✓200-step journeys from Standard
- ✗Intro pricing for the first year
- ✗Billed per contact, unsubscribes included
- ✗Thin support on small plans
A solid tool that's rarely the cheapest. Take it if your stack expects it; otherwise compare it with Brevo at the same list size.
Sender
Sender has the largest free volume here: 2,500 subscribers and 15,000 emails a month, enough to mail your whole list six times. Basic automations and forms are included, and users rate its chat support highly.
Standard starts around $7 a month billed yearly, removes Sender branding and adds A/B tests. Professional, from $14, adds SMS credits and priority support. The limit: fewer native integrations than Mailchimp or ActiveCampaign.
- 2,500 subscribers and 15,000 emails free
- Automations on the free plan
- Well-rated chat support
- ✓Best volume for the price
- ✓Quick to learn
- ✓Responsive support
- ✗Fewer native integrations
- ✗Sender branding on free
- ✗Smaller template library
The smart pick for a small list you mail often. Past 2,500 contacts, compare with Brevo, which bills per email.
Moosend
Moosend packs automations, landing pages and forms into one Pro plan priced by contacts: $9 a month for 500, $24 for 2,000 and $64 for 10,000, with 20% off yearly. The workflow templates are easy to adapt, and the editor is simple.
The limits are real, though. There's no permanent free plan, only a 30-day trial. Users rate the support poorly, and transactional sending sits behind a custom quote, which matters if your site sends receipts.
- Automations on the entry plan
- Landing pages included
- 20% off yearly
- ✓Cheap at 10,000 contacts
- ✓Easy workflow templates
- ✓All core features in one plan
- ✗Weak support in user reviews
- ✗No free plan after the trial
- ✗Transactional email not in the standard plans
Worth a look if price matters most and you can live with slow support. Otherwise, Brevo Standard gives you unlimited automation for $18.
What email marketing really costs at your list size
The sticker price means little until you know what the tool counts: contacts or emails sent. Here are three small business profiles, based on official pricing.
Under 2,500 contacts
Sender covers it for free: 2,500 subscribers and 15,000 emails a month. Brevo's free plan works too if you stay under 300 emails a day. MailerLite and Mailchimp stop at 250 contacts on their free plans, so you'll pay from day one.
2,500 to 10,000 contacts, two sends a month
This is where per-email billing wins. On Brevo, 20,000 emails cost $32 a month on Starter or $69 on Standard with unlimited automation. Moosend Pro costs $64 at 10,000 contacts. ActiveCampaign Plus reaches $145 a month at 5,000 contacts.
You want automations and sales tracking
ActiveCampaign Plus at $49 for 1,000 contacts plus the CRM add-on from about $39: count on roughly $100 a month with a second user. Brevo Standard remains the cheapest way into unlimited automation.
- Does the tool bill contacts or emails sent?
- Do unsubscribed contacts count toward your bill?
- Is the listed price a first-year introductory rate?
- How many seats are included, and what does the next one cost?
- Does the vendor's logo stay in your emails on this plan?
- Can you send transactional email from the same account?
Run email marketing without getting blocked
Most small businesses switch tools after a bad surprise: a suspended account or a bill that doubled. Here's the order that avoids both.
Steps
Authenticate your domain before the first send
Add the SPF, DKIM and DMARC records your tool gives you at your domain host. Send from an address on your own domain, never a Gmail address. Without this, more of your email lands in spam, and some tools won't let you send at all.
- Time
- About twenty minutes
- Where
- Your domain's DNS settings
Clean your list before importing
Remove addresses that haven't opened anything in a year, duplicates and dubious role addresses. A high bounce rate on the first campaign is the top reason reviewers give for suspensions on Brevo and MailerLite.
- Risk
- Suspended account
Ramp up volume gradually
For your first campaign, mail your most engaged few hundred contacts, then double each send. Inbox providers judge a sender on early messages: strong opens at the start protect everything after.
Launch your website before signing up
MailerLite reviews every account and often rejects sites that are under construction or brand-new domains. Sign up with a working site and a clear description of where your contacts come from.
Archive unsubscribes on per-contact tools
On Mailchimp, every contact in your audience is billed. Archive unsubscribed and inactive contacts each quarter: you can drop a tier and keep their history.
Go yearly only after three months
Yearly billing saves 10% on Brevo and MailerLite, about 20% on ActiveCampaign and Moosend. It also locks you in. Stay monthly until you've checked deliverability and real volume.

Your questions about small business email
What is the cheapest email marketing software for a small business?
Under 2,500 contacts, Sender: its free plan covers 15,000 emails a month. Above that, Brevo usually wins because it bills per email sent, not per contact. Mailing 10,000 contacts twice a month (20,000 emails) costs $69 a month on Brevo Standard with unlimited automation.
Is Mailchimp still worth it for small businesses?
It is if your website, shop and agency already plug into it. On price alone it rarely wins: many listed rates are 12-month introductory prices, and unsubscribed contacts still count toward your bill unless you archive them.
Do I need SPF, DKIM and DMARC?
Yes. Since 2024, Gmail and Yahoo ask every sender for SPF or DKIM, and bulk senders (5,000+ messages a day to Gmail) for all three, and they help every sender land in the inbox. Each tool here gives you the DNS records to paste at your domain host. Plan on twenty minutes.
Why was my email marketing account suspended?
Almost always because of bounces or spam complaints on the first campaign. Platforms block accounts that mail old or purchased lists. Verify your list before importing and start with your most engaged contacts at low volume.
What does CAN-SPAM require from my emails?
An accurate sender and subject line, your physical postal address, and a working unsubscribe link that you honor within 10 business days. Every tool here adds the unsubscribe link and footer for you, but you must fill in the address.
Should I pay per contact or per email sent?
Per email if your list is big and you send rarely. Per contact if your list is small and you send weekly. Brevo bills per email; Mailchimp, ActiveCampaign, MailerLite, Sender and Moosend bill per contact or subscriber.
Can my CRM replace an email marketing tool?
For one-to-one sales emails, yes. For newsletters to thousands of contacts, rarely: CRMs often cap bulk sends or charge more for them. Brevo includes a simple free CRM; ActiveCampaign sells pipelines as an add-on from about $39 a month.
