What is the best employee recognition software in 2026?

A thank-you the whole team sees often beats a gift card. As long as people actually open the tool.

You want shout-outs between coworkers and managers to be visible, and sometimes to come with a small reward. Most lists answer with long rankings of points platforms and "contact sales" buttons. We compared six tools on what those lists skip: the yearly bill for 50 people, with license and rewards split out, whether the tool lives in Slack or Microsoft Teams, and what happens to points nobody uses.

The short answer: Bonusly for a complete peer-to-peer program, from $3 per user per month. HeyTaco if your team lives in Slack or Teams and you only want to pay for people who take part. Workstars for one flat price, Awardco for a real rewards catalog, Assembly to start small, Guusto to send gift cards with no subscription.

Trying to measure morale instead (pulse surveys, eNPS)? That's a different job, covered in our ranking of employee engagement software.

6 recognition tools priced for 50 employees

The price column shows one year of licenses for 50 employees, on the plan a growing company actually picks, from official pricing pages. The rewards budget always comes on top. Rank follows the needs of a 20 to 500 person company that wants everyday recognition, not just the score.

Our method

How we compared and scored

Recognition software lives or dies on one question: are people still using it six months in? Programs that fade almost always fail the same way. Shout-outs get generic, they come too late, the criteria are fuzzy, managers stay out of it, and the whole thing leans on money instead of the gesture.

We read each vendor's official pricing page and terms (monthly or annual billing, reward fees, currency, trial) and a stack of user reviews, the negative ones first. For each tool we worked out one year of licenses for 50 employees. None of these tools has a full review in our Labs yet, so the scores belong to this ranking, built on the five criteria below. That's why rank doesn't always follow the score.

What's not ranked, and why. Workhuman, Achievers, Vantage Circle, Recognize, Nectar and Mo are quote-only, with no public price, and mostly target large companies. Workleap Officevibe (with its Good Vibes feature) and Leapsome include recognition, but they're engagement measurement tools first, scored in our dedicated ranking. Microsoft Teams has built-in praise through Viva Insights, which we cover as a starting point below rather than as a ranked product.

Best peer-to-peer recognition software

Bonusly

4.2/5

Bonusly is the benchmark for points-based shout-outs. Every employee gets a small allowance of points to give away. They send some to a coworker with a public note ("thanks for proofing the proposal last night"). The receiver collects points and redeems them for a reward.

Pricing is easy to read: Team is $3 per user per month, $5 with Bizy, the AI assistant, which also comes as a $2 add-on. The pricing page also lists yearly rates ($30 per user per year on Team, $50 with Bizy), so 50 people land between $1,500 and $1,800 a year depending on how you're billed. The page contradicts itself on that point, so get the billing terms in writing before you sign. Organization, for larger companies, is quote-based.

Rewards are billed at face value: a $10 card costs you $10, with no hidden fees according to Bonusly. Integrations come at no extra charge, and Bonusly plugs into Make or Zapier so another tool can trigger a shout-out (see the Zapier integration).

Its weak spot: the points. Users complain that the monthly giving allowance expires and that a point feels like it's worth very little. Others say the allowance runs out fast. Plan for that before you set the numbers.

Tip: keep the allowance modest and add non-cash rewards (an afternoon off, picking the next team lunch). The gesture stays, and the bill doesn't balloon.

Standout features
  • Public pricing, 30-day trial with no card
  • Rewards billed at face value
  • Connects to Make and Zapier
+Pros
  • ✓The most complete peer-to-peer program in this ranking
  • ✓Entry license at $3 per user
  • ✓Integrations at no extra cost
−Cons
  • ✗Giving allowance expires every month
  • ✗Billing terms to confirm in writing
  • ✗USD pricing only
Verdict

The most complete pick for a points-based program, as long as you keep the rewards budget in check.

Best for teams that live in Slack or Teams

HeyTaco

4.2/5

HeyTaco turns a thank-you into an emoji. You drop a taco in a Slack or Teams message with a couple of words, and your coworker gets it. Everyone can give five tacos a day by default. Tacos add up and get swapped for rewards your company defines.

Its best argument: you only pay for users who gave or received a taco that month. If half the team doesn't play along, you don't pay for them. That also makes it the best adoption test on the market, because the invoice tells you who's taking part.

Classic costs $3 per active user per month, so $1,800 a year for 50 active users. Deluxe, at $5, adds automatic work anniversaries, gift cards and analytics ($3,000 a year for 50). Above 200 users, pricing is custom.

Its weak spot: depth. HeyTaco won't replace a rewards platform with a big catalog, and the Taco Chats add-on, which nudges coworkers into conversations, only works in Slack. The playful tone also won't suit every industry.

Tip: run the 30-day trial with a single team, then check the active user count. Under half after a month? The problem is the habit, not the tool.

Standout features
  • Only bills active users
  • Lives in Slack and Microsoft Teams
  • Five tacos a day per person
+Pros
  • ✓No extra app to open
  • ✓Cost tracks real participation
  • ✓Automatic anniversaries on Deluxe
−Cons
  • ✗Light rewards catalog
  • ✗Taco Chats is Slack-only
  • ✗Playful tone, not for every industry
Verdict

The easiest to keep alive if your team already works in Slack or Teams, and the only one that bills real adoption.

Best flat price, no add-ons

Workstars

4.0/5

Workstars bets the opposite way from its rivals: one price. $3 per employee per month, every feature included, billed monthly. The vendor gives its own examples: $150 a month for 50 employees, $600 for 200. Over a year, 50 people come to $1,800.

There's no setup fee, and a discount kicks in above 1,000 employees. For a finance lead, it's the easiest quote to read in this ranking: headcount times three dollars.

The rewards budget sits apart, and it's only charged when an employee redeems points. You don't park money in an account for points that sit unused.

Its weak spot: our comparison couldn't check its rewards catalog in detail. The vendor lists Slack and Microsoft Teams integrations; in the demo, ask above all for the list of retailers in your country.

Tip: the monthly bill follows your headcount automatically. For a seasonal business, that beats an annual contract.

Standout features
  • One price, every feature included
  • Monthly billing, no setup fee
  • Rewards charged at redemption
+Pros
  • ✓The simplest quote in this ranking
  • ✓No paid modules to discover later
  • ✓No money locked in idle points
−Cons
  • ✗Rewards catalog to confirm
  • ✗Retailer list to request in a demo
  • ✗Fewer public details than rivals
Verdict

The right pick if you want a simple, predictable budget line, once the catalog checks out.

Best rewards catalog

Awardco

3.8/5

Awardco puts the reward at the center. Where other tools start from the thank-you note, Awardco starts from what the employee receives, with a bold promise: no platform markup on rewards.

For companies of 100 employees or fewer, Awardco sells packages starting at $3,000 a year, presented as a starting point. Above that, everything is quote-based. The rewards budget is separate, and the pricing page warns that taxes, shipping or card fees may apply.

For 50 employees, $3,000 a year means $60 per person before the first reward. That's more than Bonusly or HeyTaco. You're paying for the catalog and reward handling, not just the shout-out feed.

Its weak spot: the entry ticket and the lack of public pricing beyond the SMB packages. If you have staff abroad, ask which rewards they can actually use where they live.

Tip: ask in writing which fees get added on top of a reward's value (taxes, shipping, card fees). That's where the "no markup" promise holds or breaks.

Standout features
  • No markup on rewards, per the vendor
  • SMB packages with a public starting price
  • Rewards budget billed separately
+Pros
  • ✓Rewards are the core of the product
  • ✓Yearly package, easy to budget
  • ✓Clear split between license and rewards
−Cons
  • ✗$3,000 a year entry ticket
  • ✗Quote-only above 100 employees
  • ✗Taxes, shipping and card fees may apply
Verdict

The right pick when the reward matters as much as the thank-you, and the SMB package covers your headcount.

Best to start small

Assembly

3.8/5

Assembly keeps the entry simple: the Empower plan, at $3 per user per month, billed annually. For 50 people, that's $1,800 a year in licenses. Above it, Enterprise is quote-based.

That ties for the lowest entry price in this ranking with Bonusly Team, Workstars and HeyTaco Classic. The difference is the contract: with Assembly you commit for a year from day one, where Workstars bills monthly and HeyTaco bills on usage.

Its weak spot: the pricing page says nothing about reward fees. Before you sign, ask how rewards are billed (when issued or when redeemed), with what fees, and what happens to unused points.

Tip: if you're torn between Assembly and Bonusly, compare them on those three reward questions rather than on the license. At $3 per user, licenses are a wash; rewards make the difference.

Standout features
  • Empower at $3 per user per month
  • Enterprise plan for larger teams
  • Public entry price
+Pros
  • ✓One of the cheapest licenses in this ranking
  • ✓Predictable yearly invoice
  • ✓Room to upgrade without switching tools
−Cons
  • ✗Annual commitment from day one
  • ✗Reward fees not listed
  • ✗USD pricing
Verdict

A solid way in if you accept the annual commitment, once you've pinned down what rewards cost.

Best for sending gift cards

Guusto

3.7/5

Guusto isn't a shout-out feed. It's a tool to send gift cards, with a real free plan: no minimum spend, cards sent by email or text, more than 100 retailers. You pay cards at face value.

Paid plans change the logic. Lite costs $150 a month for one sender and 250 recipients, so $1,800 a year. Essential charges $4 per sender and $0.70 per recipient per month, with a $200 monthly minimum; Premium is $5 and $1, with a $500 minimum. Essential and Premium are billed annually. For 50 employees and 5 managers on Essential, the $200 minimum applies: $2,400 a year. From Lite up, unclaimed gifts get credited back.

Its weak spot: Guusto bills in US or Canadian dollars, and its catalog targets North America. Some users report retailers pulled from the free plan without notice, credit that couldn't be refunded as cash, and currency mix-ups.

Tip: if part of your team is outside North America, keep Guusto for the US and Canadian staff and use a local gift card provider for the rest.

Standout features
  • Free plan with no minimum spend
  • Cards by email or text
  • Unclaimed gifts credited back from Lite
+Pros
  • ✓The only free plan in this ranking
  • ✓Cards at face value
  • ✓Sent by email or text
−Cons
  • ✗Catalog built for North America
  • ✗Billing in USD or CAD
  • ✗No peer-to-peer feed
Verdict

Handy for a team in North America that wants gift cards without a subscription, less so for a peer program.

Cost, rewards, catalog

Three questions most lists never ask

"From $3" tells you almost nothing. What matters is the full bill, what happens to the points, and whether your people can actually use the rewards.

What you really pay in a year

The bill has two layers. First the license: for 50 employees, $1,500 to $1,800 at Bonusly, $1,800 at HeyTaco Classic, Workstars and Assembly, at least $2,400 at Guusto Essential, $3,000 or more at Awardco. Then the rewards budget, which most rankings ignore. If you plan $10 of rewards per person per month, add $6,000 a year for 50 people. The rewards budget overtakes the license fast.

Where the reward money goes

Ask every vendor two questions. Are rewards billed when you issue points or when employees redeem them? Workstars charges at redemption, so idle points cost nothing; Guusto credits back unclaimed gifts from Lite up. And what happens to points nobody spends? Bonusly users say the monthly giving allowance expires. Rewards are money leaving the company, so check with your accountant or payroll provider how gift cards are treated before you launch. If you have staff in France, gifts above €200 a year per employee are only exempt from social charges when tied to a listed event, and performance isn't one of them.

Can your people actually use the rewards

All six tools bill in US dollars, and several catalogs target North America. Reviews of larger platforms describe points stores priced above regular retail and cards blocked by country. If your team is spread across countries, ask for the retailer list for each one before you sign. Many companies run a no-cash shout-out tool for everyday thanks and a local gift card provider for real gifts.

Launch the program

Launch recognition in six steps

Software doesn't create recognition. These steps come from the reasons programs fail most often: generic shout-outs, absent managers, betting everything on money.

01

Start with what you already have

Priority

If your company runs on Microsoft Teams, praise in Viva Insights already lets people send a thank-you, privately or in a channel, with reminders and a history. Trends and sharing features need a Viva Insights subscription.

Run that habit for a few weeks. If nobody uses it, a paid tool won't fix that.

Starting point
Praise in Teams
02

Run a 30-day trial with one team

Choice

Bonusly and HeyTaco both offer 30-day trials with no credit card. Pick a team of 10 to 20 people with a manager who's bought in, and run the trial with them only.

With HeyTaco, the invoice only counts participants: that's your free adoption metric.

Length
30 days, no card
03

Split thank-yous from rewards

Budget

Keep cash-free shout-outs for everyday thanks: they cost nothing and raise no payroll questions. Save gifts for real milestones, with a budget you set once a year.

That stops a points platform from leaking money month after month without anyone noticing.

Everyday thanks
No cash attached
04

Get managers to go first

Adoption

A program where only peers thank each other runs out of steam. Ask each manager for one specific thank-you a week: who, what, and why it mattered.

A specific note sent the same day beats a "great job everyone" three weeks later.

Pace
One specific thank-you a week
05

Ask the three questions before you sign

Contract

Billed at issue or at redemption? Unused points lost or credited back? Which retailers in your countries? Get the answers in writing.

Also confirm monthly versus annual billing: most tools in this space bill yearly.

Answers in writing
06

Write a one-page rewards policy

Payroll

Write down what gets rewarded, how much, and on what occasion. Have your accountant or payroll provider review it before launch.

It keeps the program fair, and it keeps surprises off the payroll.

FAQ · 8 questions

Employee recognition · FAQ

  • What is employee recognition software?
It's a tool that makes thank-yous between coworkers and managers visible, and sometimes attaches a reward. Someone posts a public note, often with points or a badge, in a team feed or in Slack and Teams. Points add up and get redeemed under rules your company sets.
  • Is there free employee recognition software?
Yes, with limits. Guusto has a free plan with no minimum spend, but it's for sending gift cards, not for peer shout-outs. In Microsoft Teams, praise in Viva Insights lets people send a thank-you; advanced features need a Viva Insights license. Bonusly and HeyTaco offer 30-day trials.
  • How much does recognition software cost for 50 employees?
Between $1,500 and $3,000 a year in licenses for the tools in this ranking, plus the rewards budget. Bonusly runs $1,500 to $1,800, HeyTaco Classic, Workstars and Assembly $1,800, Awardco at least $3,000. With $10 of rewards per person per month, add $6,000 a year.
  • Do reward points expire?
It depends on the tool. Bonusly users say the monthly giving allowance expires if you don't use it. Guusto credits back unclaimed gifts from the Lite plan up. Workstars only charges the rewards budget when points are redeemed. Ask the vendor in writing before you sign.
  • How do you recognize employees with no budget?
With specific, fast, public thank-yous. A note that says who, what and why, posted the same day in the team channel, costs nothing. Add non-cash rewards: picking the next project, presenting work at the all-hands, a learning slot.
  • What's the difference between recognition and engagement?
Recognition is a gesture, engagement is a measurement. Recognition software helps people say thanks; engagement software measures morale with surveys. Some tools, like Workleap Officevibe or Leapsome, do both, with measurement at the core.
  • How do you make recognition stick in Slack or Teams?
Pick a tool that installs there, so a thank-you takes ten seconds. HeyTaco works in Slack and Teams; Teams praise runs through Viva Insights. Create a dedicated channel and ask managers to post one specific thank-you there every week.
  • Why do employee recognition programs fail?
Because shout-outs turn generic and late, criteria stay fuzzy, managers don't take part, and the program leans on money. Fix it with specific notes sent the same day, a manager habit, and cash-free recognition for everyday thanks.
