What is the best referral software in 2026?
The sticker price is only half the bill. The other half grows with every sale your customers bring in.
A referral program sounds simple: a happy customer shares a link or a code, a friend buys, and both get a reward. The software you pick changes the math. Some tools take a percentage of every referred order, some cap your monthly orders, and some charge $449 a month before your first referral lands.
Here's the short answer. On Shopify, pick Smile.io or Yotpo if you want loyalty points and referrals in one app, and ReferralCandy if you only want a plug-and-play referral program. For a service business or B2B team that lives in its CRM, look at Referral Factory or Referral Rock. For a SaaS product or consumer app, GrowSurf. On a shoestring budget, Referral Rocket starts at $16 a month.
Every price below is in US dollars, straight from each vendor's official pricing page, before sales tax.
The ranking is editorial: a sponsored spot is always labeled on its card, and no affiliate link changes a score.

How we compared and scored
We started with a question most top-ranking lists skip: what will your program cost once it works? A $39 subscription looks cheaper than a $200 one. But if the tool keeps 10.5% of every referred sale, that flips after a few thousand dollars a month in referred revenue.
We read official pricing pages, trial terms, order and participant caps, and hundreds of merchant reviews, focusing on the negative ones: leaked codes, lost attribution, surprise renewals. Scores follow five criteria, with value for money weighted highest. Yotpo, Smile.io, ReferralCandy and GrowSurf keep the scores they hold in our other rankings. Viral Loops, Friendbuy, Talkable, Extole and Mention Me aren't ranked because we couldn't read a price on an official page.

Yotpo
Yotpo takes the top spot because it treats referrals as one piece of a bigger retention system. The shopper who earns points, climbs a VIP tier and refers a friend keeps a single account. For a brand that sells to the same customer again and again, that beats a standalone referral app.
The free install is the best way in: under 100 orders a month, referrals are already included. You can launch, see whether customers share, and decide later. Pro starts at $199 a month with 500 orders included, and each order above that costs between $0.05 and $0.20 depending on the tier.
The weak spot is the vendor relationship. Recent merchant reviews mention a buggy dashboard, reporting they don't trust, and a contract that auto-renewed without warning. One merchant reported eight support contacts without a fix.
Tip: check your order count for the past three months before moving to Pro. Between 100 and 500 orders, jumping from $0 to $199 hurts, and Smile.io covers the same range for $15 to $79.
- Referrals on the free plan
- Points, VIP tiers and referrals in one app
- Per-order fee drops as you grow
- ✓Launch for $0 under 100 orders
- ✓One customer account for the whole program
- ✓Deep feature set for scaling brands
- ✗Steep jump to $199 a month
- ✗Support complaints in recent reviews
- ✗Watch the renewal date
The pick if referrals should live inside a full loyalty program. If you only want referrals, ReferralCandy is simpler. See our loyalty software ranking.
Referral Factory
Referral Factory fits best when the sale doesn't happen in a shopping cart. An accounting firm, a marketing agency, a solar installer or a B2B software company doesn't need a discount code. It needs a customer to introduce a contact, that contact to show up in the CRM, and the reward to fire when the deal closes.
That's where it shines. Native connections to HubSpot, Pipedrive, Zoho and Salesforce push the friend in as a lead, and the reward triggers on a pipeline stage change. Campaigns are unlimited on every plan, so you can run one program for customers and another for partners.
The catch is the entry price. At $200 a month there's no free tier, and the 15-day trial needs a card that gets charged automatically when it ends. The 20% yearly discount is non-refundable.
Tip: if your company is young or very small, ask for the 50% startup discount before you pay, and set a reminder for day 13 of the trial.
- Referrals pushed into your CRM as leads
- Unlimited campaigns on every plan
- No cut of your revenue
- ✓Native CRM connections
- ✓Flat, easy-to-budget pricing
- ✓50% startup discount available
- ✗No free plan
- ✗Card required, auto-charge after trial
- ✗Pricey at very low volume
The best choice for B2B and service teams that work out of a CRM. For a Shopify store it's overkill: ReferralCandy or Smile.io will do.
ReferralCandy
ReferralCandy does one job well: turning buyers into advocates. After checkout, customers get a link and a code, their friend gets a discount, and the referrer is rewarded automatically. Every feature sits on every plan, with no contract and a 7-day trial.
So, is ReferralCandy worth it? It depends on the success fee. On top of the subscription, it takes a cut of the subtotal of each referred order (after discounts, excluding tax and shipping), on a new customer's first three orders. On Basic, that's 10.5%. The vendor's own example says it all: at $12,000 in monthly referred sales, Grow costs $499 and Scale $429. The pricier plan ends up cheaper.
Merchant reviews also flag discount codes cluttering the Shopify admin, a clunky email template editor, a single active program at a time, no Zapier connection, and no portal where referrers track their rewards.
Tip: below roughly 200 customers, the math rarely works. Wait until you have a base that buys again, then run the total cost at your real volume for each plan.
- Every feature on every plan
- Automatic two-sided rewards
- Success fee only on new customers
- ✓Fast setup on Shopify
- ✓Well-rated, responsive support
- ✓No contract, 7-day trial
- ✗10.5% success fee on Basic
- ✗One active program at a time
- ✗No referrer portal
The best pure referral app for Shopify, as long as you run the success-fee math at your volume. If you also want points, Smile.io does both for less.
Smile.io
Smile.io is the gentlest on-ramp. Referrals come with every plan, including the free one, which covers up to 200 orders a month. Above that, Essential at $15 a month handles 500 orders and Standard at $79 handles 1,000. There's no cut of your sales.
Install takes a few clicks from the Shopify App Store, and the setup screens make sense even if you've never run a program. Points, rewards and referrals share one launcher on your storefront.
Growth is where friction shows. Several merchants say they were pushed to $199 a month for features they saw as basic, and that there's no bulk enrollment for existing customers. Support replies can take two to three days. One merchant watched 12,000 generated codes end up on coupon sites.
Tip: in reward settings, make each code single-use and add a minimum order value. That stops one leaked code from costing you hundreds of orders.
- Referrals on the free plan
- Priced by orders, no success fee
- Installs in minutes on Shopify
- ✓Free up to 200 orders a month
- ✓Points and referrals in one app
- ✓Gradual price steps
- ✗Key features locked to pricier plans
- ✗Slow support at times
- ✗No bulk enrollment of past customers
The safest way to start on Shopify. Past 1,000 orders a month, compare with Yotpo, which goes deeper at that size.
GrowSurf
GrowSurf comes from the software world. It rewards a signup, an upgrade to a paid plan or a milestone of friends invited, which cart-first Shopify apps handle poorly. It also powers pre-launch waitlists where each invite moves you up the line.
Price is the big hurdle. Business starts at $449 a month for 10,000 participants, then $649 for 25,000. The Startup tier, up to 5,000 participants, no longer shows a price on the official page, so you'll need to ask. The trial runs 14 days. GrowSurf also sells a separate affiliate product with no monthly fee, at 3% of referred revenue.
Users praise fast support, with callbacks inside 24 hours. They complain that reward approval and payout are still manual, that the HubSpot sync is shaky, and that the tool fits ecommerce and services less well.
Tip: if your program targets commissioned partners more than customers, the $0 plus 3% affiliate plan often costs far less than Business.
- Rewards signups and upgrades
- Pre-launch waitlists
- Affiliate plan with no monthly fee
- ✓Built for software products
- ✓Very responsive support
- ✓14-day trial
- ✗$449 a month for the first listed plan
- ✗Manual reward payouts
- ✗Weak fit for online stores
The right pick for an app or SaaS that already has volume. For an early-stage product, Referral Rocket costs nearly thirty times less to start.
Referral Rock
Referral Rock is built for companies where several people run the program. The Operator plan, $250 a month, includes ten admin seats, unlimited referrals and 10,000 members, plus 1,000 new members each month. For a franchise or a network of branches, that lets each location track its own referrals.
Add-ons are the other draw. An extra program costs $100 a month and 10,000 more members $125, so you can split a customer program from a partner program without switching plans. There's no cut of your sales.
The downside is the learning curve. There are lots of settings, and a small team without a dedicated marketer will need time to configure everything. Add-ons also stack up on the invoice quickly.
Tip: use the 14-day trial to build the full program and pilot it with one or two locations before you roll it out network-wide.
- Ten admin seats included
- Unlimited referrals
- Extra programs at $100
- ✓Made for multi-location teams
- ✓Flat fee, no success fee
- ✓14-day trial
- ✗Long setup
- ✗Add-ons inflate the bill
- ✗No free plan
The right pick for a network with multiple locations or managers. If you're running it solo, Referral Factory plugs into your CRM with less effort.
Referral Rocket
Referral Rocket is by far the cheapest tool here. Basic at $16 a month covers three campaigns, 500 referrers and 1,000 referrals. Pro at $33 adds white label, API access and up to 10,000 referrals. No transaction fees.
It's the ideal way to find out whether your customers will refer at all before you spend real money. A small agency, a coach, a course creator or a young SaaS can launch in a day.
The trade-off is depth. Fewer native integrations than Referral Factory, simpler reports, and a smaller vendor with a shorter track record. There is a free starter tier, but it's tiny (one campaign, three referrers, ten referrals) and it doesn't appear on the pricing grid.
Tip: pay monthly for three months, then switch to yearly. The 15% discount is worth it once you know the program sticks.
- $16 a month to start
- No transaction fees
- White label from $33
- ✓Cheapest in the ranking
- ✓Launch in a day
- ✓15% off yearly
- ✗Fewer native integrations
- ✗Basic reporting
- ✗Younger vendor
The best way to start with no budget. Once your program brings in dozens of customers a month, check whether a deeper tool would save you time.
What actually drives the bill
Referral software cost comes down to three things: the subscription, what the tool takes from your sales, and what you give away as rewards. Here's what to model before you sign.
The success fee
The free plan ceiling
The reward itself
Fraud and leaked codes
- Model total cost (subscription plus success fee) at today's volume and at double
- Check the order or participant cap on your target plan
- Note the renewal date and any annual commitment
- Ask whether the trial needs a card
- Make sure the tool offers a code as well as a link
Six rules for a profitable, clean referral program
Software doesn't make the program. These six rules come from the mistakes merchants mention most, and they apply to every tool in the ranking.
The rules
Reward both sides
Before launchWhen only the referrer gets paid, it feels like a commission and the friend gets suspicious. A balanced two-sided reward, say a discount for the friend and store credit for the referrer, gives both a reason to act. Start with a small group of loyal customers, measure, then open it up.
- Most common setup
- Friend discount plus referrer credit
Offer a code, not just a link
During setupSome shoppers distrust links, and plenty forget them before their friend buys. A personal code is easy to say out loud and type at checkout. Attribution survives even when the link gets lost.
- Problem avoided
- Unattributed referrals
Pay rewards after the return window
In settingsReward on purchase and a friend can buy, return the item and leave the referrer with free credit. Set approval to fire after your return window, 14 or 30 days depending on your policy. It's the simplest anti-fraud setting there is.
- Suggested delay
- Your return window
Publish short program terms
Before launchBan self-referrals and duplicate accounts, say when rewards are paid and how many friends one person can refer. Put the terms on a page of your site and link them from every referral email. When a dispute comes up, that page settles it.
- Key clauses
- Self-referral, delay, cap
Let the referrer send the invite
During setupWhen the referrer shares a link by text or social media, you collect nothing about the friend. If your tool emails the invite, use the address once, skip automatic follow-ups, and keep newsletter signup as a separate unchecked box. That keeps you on the safe side of GDPR if you sell into Europe.
- Safest option
- Referrer-shared link
Ask at the right moment
After purchasePeople refer when they're happy, which means after the product arrives and they've used it, not at checkout. Send the invite a few days after delivery, or right after a positive review. Around 10% of invited friends converting is usually seen as a good result.
- Key moment
- After delivery

Referral software · FAQ
How much does referral software cost?
From $0 to well over $1,000 a month. Smile.io and Yotpo are free at low order volume, Referral Rocket starts at $16, ReferralCandy at $39 plus a 10.5% success fee, Referral Factory at $200 and GrowSurf Business at $449. The success fee often matters more than the sticker price. Is there a free referral app for Shopify?
Yes. Smile.io includes referrals free up to 200 orders a month and Yotpo free under 100 orders. Both install from the Shopify App Store in minutes. For a full two-sided referral program on Shopify, an app is the usual route. Is ReferralCandy worth it?
Yes, if your store has repeat buyers and you pick the right plan. On Basic, the 10.5% success fee adds up fast: past a few thousand dollars a month in referred sales, Grow or Scale ends up cheaper. Under roughly 200 customers, wait.Referral vs affiliate program: what's the difference?
A referral program rewards your customers for recommending you to friends, usually with discounts or credit. An affiliate program pays commissions to outside partners like bloggers and creators. Tools differ, so check our affiliate software ranking for the second case. What is the best referral software for SaaS?
GrowSurf is the strongest fit in this ranking for SaaS, because it rewards signups and upgrades. For a small budget, Referral Rocket does the job from $16. If you mostly pay partners on recurring revenue, an affiliate tool built for subscriptions fits better. How do I stop referral fraud?
Ban self-referrals in your terms, make each code single-use, and only pay rewards after the return window. Also flag orders where referrer and friend share a shipping address or card. Those three steps block most abuse. What reward works best for referrals?
A two-sided reward of similar value: a discount for the friend and store credit for the referrer. Base the amount on your paid acquisition cost. Store credit beats cash because it brings the referrer back to buy again. What conversion rate should I expect from referrals?
Around 10% of invited friends converting is generally seen as good. Timing and reward size drive it most. Referred visitors often convert better than ad traffic, because someone they trust vouched for you.
