Ahrefs alternative: where to go and how to switch without losing anything

Five destinations, one per reason to leave, and a seven-step exit plan.

The short answer: SE Ranking if you want the same daily work for less, with daily rank tracking and a built-in Ahrefs import. Semrush if you want a suite at least as broad, PPC research included. SISTRIX if you track domain visibility over time. Ubersuggest if your budget is under $30 a month. And if you only work on your own sites, Google Search Console plus Ahrefs Free covers the basics for $0. Before you pick, remember one thing: the Ahrefs Starter plan can't export anything. Pull your data while your paid plan is still active. We compared these five destinations and their 2026 pricing.

The real reasons

Why people cancel Ahrefs, and what staying costs

Ahrefs is still a reference for backlinks and competitor research. Nobody leaves because the data is bad. People leave because of the bill, the credits that run out, and the add-ons that keep stacking up. Here are six reasons, each one checked against Ahrefs' own pricing and help pages in 2026. Still on the fence? Our full Ahrefs review weighs the pros and cons.

The $29 plan is too limited to do real work

Starter costs $29 a month, and you get 200 credits, one unverified project, 50 tracked keywords, one month of history and 250 rows per report. It has no exports at all. You can't buy extra credits or add a user, and it only renews monthly. The first plan you can actually work with is Lite, at $129 a month.

Credits burn on every click

On Lite, each user gets 1,000 credits a month. Opening a report or changing a filter uses them up, and unused credits don't roll over. Users tell the same story again and again: the Lite quota is gone in two weeks once you track a few client sites. Unlimited credits start at Standard, at $249 a month.

Every extra person costs money

Every plan includes a single user. A second seat costs $40 a month on Lite (two seats max), $60 on Standard (five max) and $80 on Advanced (ten max). Sharing a login breaks the terms, and users report account blocks for it. For a team of three on Lite, you already pay $209 a month ($129 + 2 × $40).

Add-ons pile up on the invoice

Brand Radar AI, which tracks how often AI answers mention your brand, starts at $199 a month. Content Kit starts at $99, and Report Builder costs $99. Each new need becomes another line item. A freelancer who adds AI tracking to Lite nearly doubles the bill.

Repeated price hikes, and weekly rank updates

Lite went from $99 to $129 in 2024, and some features moved up to Standard. One developer put it bluntly: "their pricing is a nightmare. And they change it constantly, not in your favor." There's another catch: Ahrefs Rank Tracker updates weekly by default, while SE Ranking and Semrush track daily on their entry plans.

No trial, no guaranteed refund

Ahrefs no longer offers a free trial, and its terms don't commit it to refunds. A cancellation takes effect at the end of the billing cycle, the day before your next charge, and the account then drops to the free plan. Projects above the free limits are frozen. So plan your exit before the renewal date, not after it.

The 5 destinations

Ahrefs alternatives, tool by tool

For each tool: why move to it, who it fits, its main limit, how to switch from Ahrefs, and what it costs. Prices are the ones vendors list in 2026, in the currency they show. Looking for a wider list without the migration angle? Our Ahrefs alternatives page covers more tools.

01

SE Ranking: the same work for less

Best value

Why move to SE Ranking. It's the tool that replaces Ahrefs day to day without changing how you work: keyword research, competitor analysis, backlinks, site audits and rank tracking. The difference shows on the invoice. Core costs $129 a month, or $103.20 billed yearly (20% off). It includes 10 projects and 2,000 keywords tracked daily, while Ahrefs tracks weekly by default. User reviews keep coming back to the same point: roughly the same output as the expensive tools, for a fraction of the price.

Who it's for. Freelancers and small businesses that track several sites, and small agencies. Growth, at $279 a month ($223.20 yearly), moves up to 30 projects, 3 seats and 5,000 tracked keywords. An extra seat starts at $16 a month.

Who it's not for. A consultant whose whole job is deep link analysis. SE Ranking's backlink index is smaller than Ahrefs', like most alternatives.

Its limit. Core has a single seat. In user reviews, you'll find complaints about occasional rank tracker outages, support that's hard to reach past the chatbot, and price increases.

How to switch. SE Ranking has a dedicated migration path. It imports your keyword lists and ranking data from Ahrefs, and moves projects, domains, tags, ranking history and locations automatically. Custom reports, dashboards and some integrations need to be rebuilt. Assisted migration comes free with annual plans. Tip: use the 14-day trial (no card needed) to run the import and compare numbers against your Ahrefs exports before you commit to a year.

Semrush: the broadest suite, not the cheapest

Most complete

Why move to Semrush. If you're leaving Ahrefs because something is missing, Semrush is the one suite that covers as much ground: keywords, backlinks, audits, PPC research, content and social. Rank tracking runs daily, with 500 keywords on the entry plan and 1,500 on Pro+.

Who it's for. Teams that run SEO and paid search side by side, and agencies that want one tool for everything. For more, read our Semrush review and our head-to-head Semrush vs Ahrefs.

Who it's not for. Anyone switching to spend less. For the same usage, Semrush often costs more than Ahrefs Lite.

Its limit. Price. The Starter plan is $199 a month (about $165 billed yearly, up to 17% off), and Pro+ is $299. Each extra user starts at $45 a month. The free account is capped at 10 reports a day.

How to switch. There's no direct Ahrefs import. Recreate your projects and paste the keyword lists you exported from Ahrefs into Position Tracking. Your history starts from zero, so keep your exports for comparison. Watch the trial: the 7-day trial asks for a card, and the first month gets charged if you don't cancel in time. It's the top complaint about Semrush on review sites. Set a reminder the day you sign up.

SISTRIX: a visibility index for the long view

Visibility

Why move to SISTRIX. SISTRIX boils a domain's presence in Google down to one number, its Visibility Index, tracked week after week. When you want to see how a Google update hit your site or a competitor's, that chart says more than a keyword list. The tool is big in Europe, and it lists its prices in euros.

Who it's for. In-house SEO leads who follow domains over the long run, and agencies that report trends to clients. Start costs €119 a month excluding VAT: 1 user, 3 projects, 3 months of history. Plus, at €239, brings 3 users and 5 years of history. Professional is €419.

Who it's not for. A solo marketer who mainly wants cheap keyword ideas. Start only keeps 3 months of history, which cuts out the tool's main strength.

Its limit. Long history and teamwork need the Plus plan at €239. Each extra user costs €24.90 a month.

How to switch. No Ahrefs import. Use the 14-day trial to rebuild your projects and check its view of your competitors against yours. Monthly plans can be canceled at any time.

Ubersuggest: the smallest budget

Cheapest

Why move to Ubersuggest. If you open Ahrefs twice a month to find keyword ideas and check rankings, you're paying for an agency suite to run a blog. Ubersuggest starts at €29 a month, with keyword research, content ideas, a basic site audit and rank tracking.

Who it's for. Bloggers, small business sites and freelancers who are new to SEO. Our Ubersuggest review breaks down its plans.

Who it's not for. Agencies, or anyone doing serious backlink analysis. The data doesn't go as deep as Ahrefs.

Its limit. Shallower data, and the lifetime deal it promotes is non-refundable. Start on a monthly plan to check that the tool is enough for you.

How to switch. Recreate your project, paste your priority keywords, and keep your Ahrefs exports as a baseline.

Search Console and Ahrefs Free: switch for $0

Free

Why go free. If you only work on your own sites, you may not need a subscription at all. Google Search Console gives you real clicks, impressions and positions, keyword by keyword. Ahrefs Free (formerly Ahrefs Webmaster Tools) keeps Site Audit and a limited Site Explorer for sites you've verified. Add the free version of Screaming Frog, which crawls up to 500 URLs, and technical audits are covered too.

Who it's for. Owners of one or two sites, small businesses that only track their own domain, and bloggers. A website owner who wrote about dropping Ahrefs made the point well: the tool cost about ten times his hosting, and he couldn't measure a return on it.

Who it's not for. Anyone who needs to research competitors or find keywords beyond their own traffic.

Its limit. Nothing on sites you don't own. Keyword research goes back to Google's own suggestions.

How to switch. Verify your sites in Ahrefs Free before you cancel. Your account drops to the free plan anyway, and verified sites stay tracked.

The comparison

Ahrefs and its alternatives side by side

Our default pick: SE Ranking for most switches, Semrush if you want more features, SISTRIX if you report visibility trends. To make it concrete, take a team of three. Ahrefs Lite costs $209 a month ($129 + 2 × $40), with 1,000 credits per person and weekly rank updates. SE Ranking Core with two extra seats comes to $161 ($129 + 2 × $16), and SE Ranking Growth is $279 with three seats included. Semrush Starter with two extra users comes to $289. One row per tool: entry price on the left, how to move from Ahrefs on the right.

Exit plan

Leaving Ahrefs in seven steps

Order matters. Only one step can't be undone: the end of your paid plan, which shuts off exports. Everything else gets prepared before it.

01

Find your renewal date

Day 1

Open the Ahrefs billing page and note your next charge date. Cancellation takes effect the day before it. Your whole exit plan hangs on that date: give yourself at least one week of overlap to trial the new tool and run your exports.

On an annual plan, don't cancel midway hoping for a refund, because Ahrefs' terms don't provide one. Use the remaining months to prepare the switch.

Risk if rushed
one more month charged
02

List everything that's running

List your projects, tracked keywords with their locations, alerts, scheduled audits, client reports and integrations (Looker Studio, API). One row per item, with its equivalent in the new tool.

The list also helps you trim. A project nobody has touched in a year doesn't need to come along.

Time
one hour to half a day
03

Export while your paid plan is active

Critical

The Ahrefs Export button saves each report as a CSV: your backlinks, your competitors' backlinks, organic keywords, ranking history. Exported rows count toward your monthly export limit, so start with what matters most.

The catch: if you drop to Starter to save money, you lose exports, because that plan has none. And once you're on the free plan, projects above the free limits are frozen. Store everything outside Ahrefs, one dated folder per project.

04

Trial the new tool on a real project

Take your most-watched project and rebuild it during the trial: 14 days with no card at SE Ranking, 14 days at SISTRIX, 7 days with a card at Semrush. Compare volumes, rankings and backlinks found against your exports.

For keyword research, Mangools is another option worth knowing: it gives a full refund within 48 hours of payment, a handy way to judge the tool on your own data.

Benchmark

05

Import keywords and history

In SE Ranking, the Ahrefs import brings over projects, domains, tags, ranking history and locations. Elsewhere, paste your exported keyword lists into rank tracking, with the same locations and the same device.

Check the number of imported keywords afterwards. One missing location skews every comparison for the following month.

Risk if rushed
ranking charts you can't compare
06

Rebuild reports, alerts and access

Takes longest

No tool imports your custom reports or dashboards, so you rebuild them. Start with the ones clients or your boss read every month. Recreate your new-backlink and lost-keyword alerts, and give your team access.

Tell clients about the switch. Numbers never match exactly from one index to another, and it's better to explain that before they notice.

Risk if rushed
a client who sees numbers jump
07

Cancel, then keep the free plan

End of cycle

Cancel from the billing page before your renewal date. Your account then drops to the free plan: keep your verified sites in Ahrefs Free and connect Search Console. That way you still watch your backlinks and audit your own sites, for free.

Switching pitfalls

What makes an Ahrefs switch go wrong

The same mistakes come up whenever people leave an SEO tool. None of them is technical. They're calendar slips or bad comparisons, and each one costs more than the time it would have taken to avoid it.

Canceling before you export

Once the paid plan ends, exports stop and extra projects get frozen. Your link history and ranking curve can't be rebuilt anywhere else. Export first, cancel second.

Dropping to Starter "to keep a foot in"

Starter costs $29 but exports nothing, tracks only 50 keywords and keeps one month of history. It's a poor bridge for a transition. If you want a safety net, Ahrefs Free on your verified sites is enough.

Forgetting the card on the Semrush trial

The 7-day trial asks for a card, and the first month gets charged if you don't cancel in time. Cancel on day 6 if you're not convinced.

Comparing prices without comparing units

Ahrefs counts credits and users, SE Ranking counts tracked keywords and seats, SISTRIX counts projects and users. Compare on your real setup: number of sites, tracked keywords and people. Our rankings of SEO tools for agencies and SEO tools for freelancers run that math by profile.

Leaving for links and landing on a smaller index

Cheaper alternatives have smaller backlink indexes. If link building is your job, compare your Ahrefs exports with what the new tool finds before you switch, or keep a dedicated link tool on the side.

Not warning the people who read your reports

A client who sees their backlink count halve from one month to the next thinks their site is collapsing. Explain the tool change in the first report, with a note on the index gap. If you'd rather hand this off, our SEO team can run it for you.

FAQ · 8 questions

Switching from Ahrefs: common questions

  • Is there a free alternative to Ahrefs?

Yes, for your own sites: Google Search Console, Ahrefs Free and the free version of Screaming Frog (500 URLs). For competitor research, Semrush's free account gives you 10 reports a day. No free tool replaces Ahrefs for professional work.

  • What's the cheapest Ahrefs alternative?

For a paid, all-round tool, Ubersuggest at €29 a month. For professional use across several sites, SE Ranking Core at $103.20 a month billed yearly gives the best balance of price and depth.

  • Does Ahrefs have a free trial?

No. The old paid trial is gone, and Ahrefs doesn't commit to refunds. The $29 Starter plan works as an entry point, but it's limited (200 credits, no exports). Most alternatives have a trial: 14 days at SE Ranking and SISTRIX, 7 days at Semrush.

  • How do I cancel my Ahrefs subscription?

From your account's billing page. Cancellation takes effect the day before your next charge, and your account then moves to the free plan. Export first, because projects above the free limits get frozen.

  • Is Semrush better than Ahrefs?

Not across the board. Keep Ahrefs if your work revolves around backlinks. Pick Semrush if you also run paid search and content, and want daily rank tracking on the entry plan. Our Semrush vs Ahrefs comparison settles it criterion by criterion.

  • Can I get my Ahrefs data back after canceling?

Not beyond what the free plan allows. Export your ranking history and backlinks while your paid plan is active. SE Ranking can then import ranking history into its projects.

  • Why is Ahrefs so expensive?

Because the real cost is more than the plan price. Lite is $129 a month for one user with 1,000 credits, each extra seat is $40 to $80, and add-ons like Brand Radar AI start at $199. Unlimited credits only come with Standard at $249.

  • Which alternative tracks visibility in ChatGPT and AI answers?

At Ahrefs, that's Brand Radar AI, an add-on from $199 a month. Semrush now bundles AI answer tracking into its "SEO + AI Search" plans and gives a preview on its free account. Before paying for either, check our SEO tool picks, which rank SEO tools by use case and help you judge whether that add-on is worth it for you.
