DocuSign alternatives: where to go and how to leave without losing a contract
Six destinations, one per reason to leave, and a seven-step exit plan.
The short answer: Dropbox Sign if you have lots of templates to move and want unlimited sending, SignWell if you're a solo sender on a budget, Adobe Acrobat if you already pay for it, PandaDoc if you mostly sign quotes and proposals, DocuSeal or Documenso if you never want to pay per envelope again. Before you pick, know one thing: DocuSign has no native bulk export of your signed contracts on small plans. Start there. We compared these six tools and checked their official pricing for 2026.
The ranking is editorial: a sponsored spot is always labeled on its card, and no affiliate link changes a score.
Why people end up leaving DocuSign
DocuSign is still the reference: clean interface, mobile app, more than 1,000 integrations. People don't leave because of the signing. They leave because of how it's counted and billed. Here are the six reasons that keep coming up, with official numbers.
100 envelopes per user per year
Standard and Business Pro on annual billing include 100 envelopes per user per year, about 8 a month. On monthly billing, it's 10 a month. Personal stops at 5 a month. Past that, you buy extra envelopes or move up a plan.
An envelope counts even if nobody signs
Every envelope you send is counted, whether it gets signed, declined or left pending. PowerForm sends count too. Correcting an envelope before it's signed doesn't count twice, but voiding it and sending again does.
Per-seat pricing that climbs fast
Standard costs $30 and Business Pro $45 per user a month on an annual plan. A team of five on Business Pro pays $2,700 a year. Bulk send, web forms and payment collection are Business Pro only.
Identity checks cost extra
SMS delivery starts at $0.36 and ID verification at $2.40 per attempt, and both need Standard or higher. On a contract-heavy month, these add up on top of the seat price.
Canceling goes through support
Online reviews tell the same story: no clear cancel button, an annual renewal spotted on the card statement, a saved card you can't remove. These are user reports, not policy, but they're a good reason to note your renewal date.
No bulk export on small plans
Getting all your signed contracts out takes an app like DocuSign Retrieve, or downloading envelope by envelope. That's what makes leaving painful, and why you should start before your term ends.
You're leaving because… go to…
The right alternative depends on what's pushing you out. Usually one line fits. Each card jumps to the tool's profile.

DocuSign alternatives, tool by tool
For each tool: why move there, who it's for, its limit, how to migrate from DocuSign, and what it costs. Prices are in US dollars, before tax.
The tools
Dropbox Sign: the easiest exit, with a DocuSign template importer
Imports your templatesWhy switch to Dropbox Sign. It's the only tool here with an official importer for DocuSign templates. You export a ZIP from DocuSign, drop it into the transfer tool, and Dropbox Sign rebuilds the templates with their fields. A CSV report shows what made it and what failed. Every paid plan has unlimited signature requests, so the envelope cap simply goes away.
Who it's for. Small teams of 2 to 5 people with a pile of DocuSign templates they don't want to rebuild by hand.
Who it's not for. Teams that need deep routing logic or payment collection inside the signing flow.
Its limit. The importer needs the Standard or Premium plan, and Standard caps you at 15 templates. Some DocuSign fields don't carry over: stamp, approve, decline, payment, drawing and calculated fields. CC recipients and the email subject have to be re-entered. Review every imported template before you send it to a client.
How to migrate. Trim your templates first: if you have more than 15, keep the 15 that actually get used. The tool takes 50 JSON files per batch, 40 MB per file and 400 pages per template.
- Free
- trial, one free document
- Paid
- Essentials $15/mo ($10.05 billed yearly), Standard $25/user/mo
- Best for
- lots of templates to move
- Limit
- 15 templates on Standard
SignWell: unlimited documents for the price of DocuSign Personal
Cheapest unlimitedWhy switch to SignWell. DocuSign Personal costs $11 a month for 5 envelopes. SignWell Light costs $10 a month billed yearly ($12 monthly) for unlimited documents. Signers don't need an account and there's no per-signer fee. Every plan also includes 25 free API documents a month.
Who it's for. Freelancers, consultants and small offices that sign a few documents a week and resent paying per envelope.
Who it's not for. Bigger teams with many shared templates: Light gives 5 templates per sender.
Its limit. Light covers one sender; each extra sender adds $10 to $12 a month. The Business plan ($30 a month billed yearly) includes 3 senders and unlimited templates.
How to migrate. Rebuild your templates from your original PDFs. Start with the free plan (3 documents a month) to check your two most-used templates before you pay.
- Free
- 3 documents per month
- Paid
- Light $10/mo billed yearly, unlimited
- Best for
- solo senders, low budget
- Limit
- 5 templates per sender on Light
Adobe Acrobat: if you already pay for Acrobat, signing is included
Already in your suiteWhy switch to Acrobat. Plenty of companies pay for Acrobat to edit PDFs and for DocuSign to get them signed. Acrobat Standard and Pro both include sending documents for e-signature and tracking them. If your team already has the licenses, you may be paying twice for the same job.
Who it's for. Teams that already live in Acrobat and sign standard PDFs. Acrobat Pro for teams costs $23.99 per license a month on an annual plan billed monthly, Standard $16.99.
Who it's not for. Complex flows with conditional routing or high volume: those go through Acrobat Sign Solutions, sold on quote.
Its limit. Adobe doesn't publish a numeric signature-request cap on its pricing page. On individual annual plans billed monthly, canceling after 14 days costs up to half of the remaining commitment, so read the terms first.
How to migrate. Open your original PDFs in Acrobat, add signature and date fields, and save them as reusable templates.
- Free
- Reader to sign, not to send
- Paid
- Pro for teams $23.99/license/mo
- Best for
- teams already on Acrobat
- Limit
- sending cap not published
PandaDoc: when most of what you sign is quotes and proposals
Quotes and proposalsWhy switch to PandaDoc. DocuSign gets a finished PDF signed. PandaDoc builds the document itself: proposal, quote with a pricing table, contract from a template, then signature and payment in one place. For a sales team, that kills the back-and-forth between Word, the CRM and DocuSign.
Who it's for. Sales teams and agencies that send priced proposals and want to know when the client opens them.
Who it's not for. People who only sign contracts a lawyer already wrote: you'd pay for a document editor you won't use.
Its limit. The caps are tight. Free gives 60 documents a year. Starter, at $19 a month with unlimited seats, stops at 110 documents a year. Business, at $49 per seat a month, lifts the caps, so three reps come to $147 a month. Our full PandaDoc review breaks down each tier.
How to migrate. Rebuild your templates in PandaDoc's editor rather than uploading flat PDFs, so you get variables, pricing tables and open tracking.
- Free
- 60 documents per year
- Paid
- Starter $19/mo, Business $49/seat/mo
- Best for
- quotes, proposals, sales contracts
- Limit
- 110 documents a year on Starter
DocuSeal: open source, so you never pay per envelope again
Open sourceWhy switch to DocuSeal. DocuSeal is open source: self-host it for free with unlimited sends through your own SMTP server. Your bill no longer depends on how many contracts you send. There's a hosted version too: Basic is free for 10 requests a month, Pro is $20 per user a month.
Who it's for. Teams with a developer, and software companies that want signing inside their own product: the API costs $0.20 per signed document.
Who it's not for. A small business with nobody to maintain a server. Pick the hosted version or another tool on this list.
Its limit. The free self-hosted edition signs with a self-signed certificate, which carries less weight in a dispute. The trusted certificate and support come with self-hosted Pro at $240 per user a year.
How to migrate. Upload your PDFs or Word files and place the fields in the editor. It can also pick up fields already present in a PDF form.
- Free
- unlimited self-hosted, or 10/mo hosted
- Paid
- Pro $20/user/mo
- Best for
- technical teams, API use
- Limit
- self-signed certificate on free
Documenso: the open-source drop-in for a small team
Open source, teamsWhy switch to Documenso. Documenso pitches itself as the open-source DocuSign alternative. Teams costs $40 a month for 5 users with unlimited documents, so $8 a head. Five DocuSign Standard seats cost $150 a month and still stop at 500 envelopes a year.
Who it's for. Small teams that want a flat, readable price and the option to self-host later.
Who it's not for. Anyone who needs written data-residency guarantees: the pricing page doesn't state where data is hosted, so ask before you sign up.
Its limit. The free plan stops at 5 documents a month. A commercial self-hosting license is sold separately, with no public price.
How to migrate. Create templates from your PDFs. Each user beyond five adds $8 a month.
- Free
- 5 documents per month
- Paid
- Individual $25/mo, Teams $40/mo for 5
- Best for
- small teams, flat price
- Limit
- hosting region not stated

Leave DocuSign in seven steps
Order matters. The first two steps stop you paying for an extra year, the third protects your evidence, the rest avoid a week with no way to sign.
The steps
Count your envelopes and list your templates
Day 1Open the Manage tab in DocuSign and count the envelopes you sent over the last twelve months. That number decides everything. Under 5 a month, a free or entry plan covers you almost anywhere. Over 100 a year per user, go unlimited. Then list your templates and who uses each one. In most accounts, a handful of templates do most of the sending.
- Time
- one hour
- Risk if rushed
- paying for the wrong tier
Find your renewal date
ContractGo to Settings, then Plans and Billing, and note when your term ends. Annual plans renew on their own. The most common complaint in online reviews comes from people who found out about the renewal on their card statement, or couldn't find a cancel button. If that's you, email support and keep the written record.
- Where
- Settings, Plans and Billing
- Do
- cancel in writing, keep a copy
Download your signed contracts with their certificates
Longest stepThis is the step people miss. DocuSign has no native bulk download on small plans: you need an app like DocuSign Retrieve, or you download envelope by envelope. Bulk-send envelopes come down one at a time. Before you start, turn on the admin setting that attaches the Certificate of Completion to the PDF. That certificate shows who signed, when and from which IP address. Without it, your signed file is weaker evidence.
- Keep
- signed PDF + Certificate of Completion
- Risk if rushed
- incomplete proof in a dispute
Export your templates and rebuild them in the new tool
SetupSelect your templates in DocuSign and download them as a ZIP. Dropbox Sign imports it directly, with a report of fields it couldn't map. Everywhere else, you start from your PDFs and place the fields again. Send each template to your own inbox as a test before a client sees it.
- Format
- ZIP or JSON
- Check
- CC recipients, signing order
Match the identity check to each document
RiskNot every document needs the same proof. A quote is fine with an email link. A lease or a loan document may need SMS codes or an ID check. Price these add-ons before you switch: on DocuSign, SMS delivery starts at $0.36 and ID verification at $2.40 per attempt, on Standard or higher. Compare that with what your new tool charges.
- Email link
- quotes, NDAs
- ID check
- from $2.40 at DocuSign
Reconnect your integrations and web forms
Before cutoverList everything that sends envelopes without you: CRM, HR software, automation scenarios, PowerForm links on your website. A forgotten PowerForm keeps sending DocuSign envelopes and eating your allowance. Rebuild each connection in the new tool, then switch the old one off.
- Trap
- PowerForms left on your site
- Time
- half a day
Let open envelopes finish, then downgrade to free
Last dayDon't void envelopes waiting for signature: let them finish in DocuSign and send new ones from your new tool. Once everything is signed, don't close the account. Downgrade it to free. DocuSign's own support recommends this: a closed account loses access to its documents, a free one keeps it.
- Do
- downgrade, don't close
- Why
- keep access to old contracts

What makes a DocuSign exit go wrong
The same mistakes show up on DocuSign's community forum and in reviews. None of them is technical. They're all about order.
Closing the account instead of downgrading
A closed account loses access to its documents and can't be reopened. Downgrade to free and you can still view your old contracts without paying.
Exporting PDFs without the certificate
The signed PDF alone doesn't show who signed, when or from where. Turn on the Certificate of Completion attachment before you export, or you'll have to fetch it separately for every envelope.
Spotting the renewal too late
An annual plan rolls over for another year. Note the date today and plan your cutover at least a month before.
Forgetting PowerForms and integrations
A form on your site or a CRM automation keeps sending DocuSign envelopes after you switch. They eat your allowance and confuse your clients.
Comparing prices without counting sends
An $11 plan with 5 sends and a $10 plan with unlimited sends only compare at equal volume. Divide each price by your real monthly sends.
Ignoring the per-sender limits
Unlimited documents doesn't mean unlimited people. SignWell Light covers one sender, Documenso Teams five. Count who sends, not just what gets sent.
- Envelope count for the last twelve months
- Renewal date noted
- Certificate of Completion attached to PDFs
- Signed contracts downloaded and stored on your side
- Templates exported as ZIP
- Identity-check level chosen per document type
- Integrations and PowerForms listed and replaced
- Open envelopes finished in DocuSign
- DocuSign account downgraded to free, not closed
DocuSign alternatives: frequently asked questions
Is there a free alternative to DocuSign?
Yes, with caps. DocuSeal is free and unlimited if you self-host it, and its hosted version gives 10 requests a month. Documenso gives 5 documents a month, SignWell 3, PandaDoc 60 a year. DocuSign's free account only lets you sign what others send you.
Why does DocuSign say I hit my limit when I haven't signed 100 contracts?
Because DocuSign counts envelopes sent, not contracts signed. An envelope that was voided, declined or never signed still counts, and so do envelopes sent from PowerForms. With 100 envelopes per user a year on Standard, some users run out within six months. You can buy extra envelopes in Plans and Billing, or move to a tool with no cap.
What happens to my documents if I cancel DocuSign?
If you close the account, you lose access to the documents. If you downgrade to free, you keep it. Download your signed contracts with their Certificate of Completion before you change anything anyway: that's your evidence, and it should live with you.
What's the cheapest DocuSign alternative with unlimited signatures?
For one sender, SignWell Light at $10 a month billed yearly. For a team of five, Documenso Teams at $40 a month. Dropbox Sign Essentials costs $15 a month, or $10.05 billed yearly. DocuSeal is free if you host it yourself.
Can I import my DocuSign templates into another tool?
Yes in Dropbox Sign, through an official transfer tool that reads the ZIP exported from DocuSign (15 templates max on Standard). Everywhere else, you rebuild templates from your PDFs.
Is a signature from SignWell or DocuSeal as valid as one from DocuSign?
The brand doesn't make a signature valid. What matters is the audit trail: who signed, when, from where, and proof the document wasn't changed. Every tool here produces one. For documents that need a stronger identity check, compare the SMS and ID-verification add-ons.
Should I switch if I send fewer than 5 documents a month?
Not necessarily. DocuSign Personal covers 5 envelopes for $11 a month. But SignWell's free plan covers 3 a month and Documenso's covers 5, so you could pay nothing. See our e-signature software ranking to compare every option.
Do I lose money if I leave DocuSign mid-contract?
On an annual plan, you've paid for the year, and it renews unless you cancel. The cheap move is to switch your sending to the new tool now and let DocuSign run out at the renewal date, then downgrade to free.
