HeyGen alternatives: where to go when credits get too expensive

Five tools in detail, one for each reason to leave, plus a seven-step exit plan.

The short answer: go with Synthesia for training and internal comms if you want a plan priced in minutes instead of credits, Colossyan if your videos end up in an LMS (SCORM export), Elai on a tight budget, Captions for short vertical videos with your AI twin, and Tavus if you need an avatar that talks back in real time. Sometimes the right move is to stay: several comparisons still rate HeyGen's lip sync above Synthesia's. One thing to know before you cancel: you keep your videos, not your avatar or your voice clone. We compared all five tools and checked their prices and limits in 2026.

The real reasons

Why people leave HeyGen, and why it's tricky

HeyGen still makes some of the most realistic avatars on the market, and most of its reviews are positive. The complaints cluster in one place: credits. People don't understand them before paying, and they lose them on the way out. Here are six reasons, all checked in 2026.

A minute isn't priced like a minute

In 2026, HeyGen bills video in credits per minute, and the rate depends on the avatar engine. Avatar III costs 4 credits a minute (7 with a photo avatar). Avatar IV from a video source costs 31, Avatar V costs 48. The Creator plan gives you 600 credits a month: 150 minutes on the old engine, but about 19 minutes on Avatar IV and 12 on Avatar V. Many users only notice after their first polished render.

Downgrade to Free and your credits are gone

On a monthly plan, unused credits roll over for one cycle (60 days max). On an annual plan, they pile up until renewal. Cancel and drop back to Free, and the whole balance disappears. Reviewers describe finding this out at the exact moment they left, with hundreds of credits still on the meter.

No top-ups on the smaller plans

Out of credits mid-project? Creator can't buy more. Pro has to move up a tier. Only Business ($149 a month plus $20 per seat) sells packs, at $5 per 100 credits. If you're a freelancer with one heavy month per quarter, that's a forced upgrade.

Voice clones that don't sound like you

The voice clone does well in English and less well in other languages. French-speaking users say they don't recognize their own voice, and one independent test scored the likeness 3 out of 5. If your voice is part of your brand, listen to a full test before you produce at scale. For voice-only work, our ElevenLabs review is another route.

Failed renders still burn credits

A failed render costs as much as a good one, and every fix triggers a full re-render. Users report spending 150 credits on one simple avatar plus a 30-second clip, or $250 on credits overall. Others mention credits deducted with no video and support replies that take hours. The overall rating on review sites holds up (4.2 out of 5 across roughly 5,000 reviews), but the complaints rhyme: credits and support.

You keep the videos, not the twin

You can download your videos and audio-only tracks. There's no export of your avatar model or your voice clone, so the new tool means a new recording and a new consent. L&D teams flag another gap, reported by a competitor: no SCORM export, the package format LMS platforms read.

The 5 alternatives

HeyGen alternatives, tool by tool

For each tool: why switch to it, who it's for, where it falls short, how to rebuild your avatar there, and what it costs. All prices are list prices in US dollars, before tax, as shown in 2026.

01

Synthesia: training and internal video on a predictable plan

Training and enterprise

Why switch to Synthesia. HeyGen counts credits that change with the engine. Synthesia sells video minutes, so you know what you have before you hit render. It covers 140+ languages, ships 125+ stock avatars from Starter up, and is clearly built for company video: onboarding modules, SOPs, internal announcements. We rate it 4.1 out of 5, against 4.0 for HeyGen, in our AI video generator ranking.

Who it's for. HR, L&D and comms teams producing regular explainer videos in several languages.

Who it's not for. Creators chasing expressive, social-first delivery. HeyGen still wins on lip sync.

Where it falls short. The free Basic plan gives you 10 minutes a month with a watermark, and you can't download anything. It's a sandbox, not a production plan. Starter is $19 a month ($9 for the first month) or $14 a month billed yearly ($168 a year), for about 12 minutes a month and 3 personal avatars. Pro is $89 a month or $59 billed yearly, for about 60 minutes. Standalone voice cloning is listed on Enterprise only, although creating a personal avatar also generates a voice. Users also point out that every video goes through moderation, and leftover minutes too short for a full video are effectively stranded.

How to switch. You rebuild your avatar: record a few minutes of script on webcam or in a studio, then film a live consent with an on-screen code (pre-recorded consent is rejected). You must be 18+, and a new outfit means a new avatar, so pick your wardrobe first. Your HeyGen scripts paste straight in. If you automate, see Synthesia with Make.

02

Colossyan: when your videos live inside an LMS

E-learning and SCORM

Why switch to Colossyan. A training module isn't a standalone video. It has to load into your learning management system and report who watched it. That's what SCORM does, and HeyGen doesn't offer it. Colossyan includes it from the Professional plan, with 5 SCORM exports a month. On Enterprise, the vendor lists SOC 2 Type II and a choice of EU or US hosting, which makes the security review easier.

Who it's for. L&D teams and training providers publishing courses to an LMS.

Who it's not for. Marketing or social video. You'd pay for training features you never touch.

Where it falls short. Volume. Professional is $59 a month billed yearly for 30 minutes on the NEO engine plus 10 on NEO2, capped at 3 seats ($30 per extra member). There's no monthly price on the page, the year is paid upfront, and unused months aren't refunded. Don't sign for a year while you're still deciding.

How to switch. The free Starter plan gives you 20 minutes a month with a watermark and already lets you create personal avatars and cloned voices. It's the cheapest place to rebuild your twin and hear your voice before you pay. Paste your HeyGen scripts scene by scene.

03

Elai: training video when the budget is tight

Budget pick

Why switch to Elai. Creator costs $23 a month billed yearly ($276 a year) or $29 month to month, for 15 minutes of video a month. That's close to what HeyGen Creator gets you on Avatar IV, at a similar price, but counted in plain minutes. Extra minutes run about $2 each, so a busy month has a known cost. HeyGen Creator sells no top-ups at all.

Who it's for. Solo trainers, small teams and course creators making a handful of explainers a month.

Who it's not for. Anyone who wants their own face and voice without paying for add-ons.

Where it falls short. Personal avatars and voices cost extra: $199 a year for a selfie avatar, $500 a year for a studio avatar, $200 a year for voice cloning. Add a selfie avatar and a cloned voice to Creator billed yearly and year one passes $670. The free plan gives you 1 minute, enough to judge the editor and nothing more.

How to switch. If a stock avatar works for you, switching is just pasting scripts. If your face matters, add the add-ons to your math before you compare with HeyGen. Team ($100 a month billed yearly, 50 minutes, 3 editors) pays off from three people.

Captions: your AI twin for short-form video

Social video

Why switch to Captions. If you mostly used HeyGen for talking-head clips on LinkedIn, Instagram or TikTok, Captions is built for exactly that: vertical format, captions, an AI twin and AI actors, all from your phone. Unused credits roll over up to 3x your monthly allowance, while HeyGen wipes your balance when you drop to Free.

Who it's for. Creators, solopreneurs and marketing teams posting several short videos a week.

Who it's not for. Long-form training or multi-language company video. There's no SCORM export, and the product is mobile-first.

Where it falls short. Published prices are the iOS plans: Max at $24.99 a month for 500 credits, Frontier at $69.99 for 1,400 credits, then $139.99 and $279.99 for the top tiers. Prices can differ depending on where you subscribe. You're still paying in credits, so price out a typical video before you commit.

How to switch. Rebuild your twin in the app, then bring over your short scripts. Keep your downloaded HeyGen videos: they're still yours to post.

Tavus: when your avatar needs to talk back

Interactive video

Why switch to Tavus. HeyGen makes videos people watch. Tavus makes avatars that hold a real-time conversation with your users, plugged into your site or app through its API. If your HeyGen project was really a video assistant, a support greeter or a sales role-play, this is the tool built for it.

Who it's for. Product teams and developers building video agents.

Who it's not for. Anyone who wants a timeline editor. Tavus doesn't replace HeyGen's studio.

Where it falls short. You need a developer, and costs climb with usage: free for 20 minutes, Starter at $22 a month for 60 minutes and one personal replica, Builder at $59 for 175 minutes, then Growth at $397 and Business at $975.

How to switch. Nothing carries over from HeyGen except your copy. Use the 20 free minutes to measure how long a real conversation with your users lasts, then pick a tier.

The comparison

HeyGen and 5 alternatives side by side

Our default picks: Synthesia for training and internal comms, Colossyan if you publish to an LMS. To compare fairly, convert everything to minutes. HeyGen Creator's 600 credits buy about 19 minutes on Avatar IV, or 150 on Avatar III. Synthesia Starter gives about 12 minutes for $14 billed yearly, Elai Creator 15 minutes for $23. If Avatar III renders are good enough for you, staying on HeyGen is still the cheapest per minute.

Exit plan

Leave HeyGen in seven steps

Order matters. Each step protects something: your credits first, then your videos, then your face and voice.

01

Spend your credits before you cancel

First

Check your balance. Dropping to Free wipes every remaining credit, rollovers included. List the renders you still want and run them before your billing period ends.

Tip: draft in Avatar III (4 credits a minute) and keep Avatar IV or V for the final cut. On 600 credits, that difference is measured in hours of video.

If you skip it
credits lost
02

Download every video and the audio

Day 1

Download each final video at your plan's best resolution: 1080p on Creator, 4K on Pro and Business. HeyGen can also generate audio only, which is handy for podcasts or audio versions.

Store everything outside HeyGen, with file names that match the project titles.

Formats
video and audio only
03

Copy your scripts and settings

No import format moves a HeyGen project into Synthesia, Colossyan or Elai. Copy each script into a doc, scene by scene, with the language, avatar and voice you used. Note your pronunciation fixes for names and brands too: you'll redo them by hand.

If you skip it
scripts rewritten
04

Rebuild your avatar on the new tool

Longest step

Your avatar doesn't transfer. On Synthesia, you record a few minutes of script and then a live consent with an on-screen code. On Elai, a personal avatar is a paid add-on. On Colossyan, the free plan already lets you try.

Treat it like a shoot: light from the front, a plain background, the outfit you want to keep. On Synthesia, a new outfit means a new avatar.

Minimum age
18 on Synthesia
05

Compare voice clones on a real script

Run the same two-minute script through your HeyGen voice and the new one. Listen to numbers, names and sentence endings, where clones usually slip. If neither sounds like you, record your own voice and use the avatar for picture only.

Test
same script, two tools
06

Delete your avatar and voice on HeyGen

Data

Your face and voice are personal data. Once you've moved, delete your avatar and voice clone in HeyGen; the API even has a dedicated endpoint to delete a voice. HeyGen says it doesn't train on your data and lists SOC 2 Type II, but deleting beats trusting.

If you skip it
your likeness stays online
07

Cancel, and ask for a refund if it's recent

After you cancel, access runs until the end of the paid period. If you subscribed less than 15 days ago on the web (14 days through the App Store) and used few credits, ask for a refund. HeyGen calls payments "generally non-refundable" but reviews requests case by case. Finally, swap out any Make or Zapier scenarios that called HeyGen: our HeyGen with Make and HeyGen with Zapier pages list what they do so you can rebuild them.

Pitfalls

What makes a HeyGen exit go wrong

The same mistakes show up again and again in reviews from people who left. None of them are technical. They're oversights, and each one costs credits, hours or your likeness.

Cancelling with a full balance

Dropping to Free wipes the balance, and annual plans stack credits until renewal. The bigger the balance, the more the mistake costs. If you plan to leave, don't renew annually: the stacking works against you.

Comparing credits to minutes

600 credits isn't 600 minutes, or 60. Convert everything to minutes using the engine you actually use. A plan that looks cheaper in credits can cost more per minute, and the other way round.

Paying a year to try a tool

Colossyan bills a year upfront and doesn't refund unused months. Synthesia and Elai charge more month to month than yearly. Do one month at the monthly rate, then go annual once the tool proves itself.

Expecting to produce on a free plan

Synthesia's free plan can't download, HeyGen's caps you at 1-minute watermarked videos, Elai's at 1 minute total. They're trials. Budget for the first paid tier from day one.

Forgetting the live consent

On Synthesia, consent is filmed live with a code. If your avatar is a colleague or an exec, book the session with them. Pre-recorded consent gets rejected.

Buying an avatar tool for an editing problem

If you mostly used HeyGen to edit and caption your own footage, an avatar generator may be the wrong category. Our Descript review and our guide to switching from CapCut cover editing. For every generator ranked, see our best AI video generators.

FAQ · 8 questions

HeyGen alternatives: frequently asked questions

  • What is better than HeyGen?

It depends on the job. Synthesia is the better pick for training and multi-language company video, with plans priced in minutes. Colossyan beats it for LMS publishing thanks to SCORM. HeyGen still leads on lip-sync realism, so for expressive marketing clips it's often the one to keep.

  • Is there a free alternative to HeyGen?

Yes. Colossyan's free plan gives 20 minutes a month with a watermark, personal avatars and voices included. Synthesia gives 10 minutes but no downloads. Tavus offers 20 minutes for interactive video. HeyGen's own free plan stops at 3 one-minute videos a month.

  • How much does a minute of HeyGen Avatar IV really cost?

About $1.24. On Creator ($24 a month billed yearly for 600 credits), one credit is worth $0.04, and a minute of Avatar IV from video costs 31 credits. A minute of Avatar III costs 4 credits, or about $0.16. Avatar V costs 48 credits a minute.

  • Do I keep my HeyGen credits if I cancel?

No, not once your account drops to Free. While subscribed, monthly credits roll over one cycle (60 days max) and annual credits stack until renewal. Spend them before your period ends.

  • Can I take my HeyGen avatar or voice clone with me?

No. You can download your videos and audio-only tracks, but there's no export of the avatar model or the voice clone. You rebuild both on the new tool, then delete the originals on HeyGen.

  • What is the cheapest AI avatar generator?

For a predictable bill, Synthesia Starter at $14 a month billed yearly (about 12 minutes) or Elai Creator at $23 billed yearly (15 minutes). On pure price per minute, HeyGen Creator on Avatar III is cheaper still, if that engine's quality is enough for you.

  • Which HeyGen alternative exports SCORM?

Colossyan, from the Professional plan at $59 a month billed yearly, with 5 SCORM exports a month. Synthesia lists SCORM on Enterprise. HeyGen doesn't offer it.

  • Does HeyGen give refunds?

Rarely. HeyGen calls payments "generally non-refundable" but reviews requests made within 15 days on the web or Google Play, 14 days on the App Store. Heavy credit use can get a request denied.
