Kahoot alternatives: which quiz tool to pick, and how to switch

Six tools sorted by audience, plus a seven-step migration plan.

The short answer: Wayground (formerly Quizizz) if you teach K-12 and want a free plan that lasts plus self-paced homework. Mentimeter for meetings, conferences and corporate training where a game-show vibe feels wrong. Socrative for checking understanding without a leaderboard, ClassPoint if your lessons already live in PowerPoint, AhaSlides if you train small groups and want monthly billing, and Wooclap for higher ed and large live events. We compared all six on their free plans, their 2026 list prices and the way you get existing questions into each one.

The ranking is editorial: a sponsored spot is always labeled on its card, and no affiliate link changes a score.

The real reasons

Why teachers and trainers start looking elsewhere

Credit where it's due: nothing gets a room shouting like a Kahoot! countdown and podium. People don't leave over the energy. They leave because the free plan can't seat a whole class, the pricing page is hard to decode, and the game-show format lands badly with adult learners. Here are six reasons, each one checked against Kahoot's own pages or user reviews.

The free plan can't fit a full class

Kahoot's free school tier caps players per game tightly enough that a class of 25 to 35 kids won't fit. It trims the content too: 4 answer options per question (6 on paid plans), 3 teams, one image, and PDF-to-kahoot stops at 3 pages. Teachers mention the player cap more than anything else in reviews, and several university teaching guides suggest playing in teams just to squeeze everyone in.

Too many plans with too many names

Schools get Kahoot!+ Bronze, Silver, Gold and Kahoot! One, plus EDU, school and district deals by quote. Businesses get Kahoot! 360, with five Pro tiers, team plans and Enterprise. It's a lot to compare, and reviewers regularly say they weren't sure which plan they'd actually bought.

Business plans are annual-only, per presenter

Kahoot! 360 Pro is billed yearly only, one license per host. Pro Start works out to $108 a year for 50 participants; for 200 you need Pro Standard at $300 a year. Team plans start at 25 licenses, and Pro can't be paid by invoice, which is a real snag for L&D teams that run everything through purchase orders.

The free business tier lasts 15 minutes

Kahoot! 360 Express, the free option for companies, stops at 15 participants and 15 minutes per session. Fine for a demo, useless for an all-hands. The Pro trial runs 7 days, so book your test session inside that window.

The game-show tone doesn't fit every room

Sound effects, a live leaderboard and points for speed are the whole point of Kahoot! for kids. In a compliance briefing or a room of senior managers, they can make serious material feel trivial, and speed scoring punishes people who think before they tap. Corporate trainers bring this up again and again when they explain why they switched.

Billing is hard to manage on your own

Kahoot's review scores are split. Occasional users rate it well, but a big share of one-star reviews are about money: being charged for a team workspace instead of a single account, not being able to downgrade without contacting support, and a pricing grid people call confusing. Before you pay, double-check the exact plan name in your cart.

The 6 alternatives

Kahoot alternatives, tool by tool

For each tool: why pick it over Kahoot!, who it suits, where it falls short, how to get your questions in, and what it costs. Prices are the 2026 list prices in US dollars, before tax. When a vendor doesn't publish its paid prices, we say so instead of guessing.

01

Wayground (formerly Quizizz): keep the fun, add self-paced practice

Best free for K-12

Why switch to Wayground. Quizizz rebranded as Wayground in 2025. It keeps the playful feel students like about Kahoot!, but each student moves through questions on their own screen, at their own speed, and you can assign a quiz as homework. The Basic plan is free for every teacher, with no end date.

Who it's for. K-12 teachers who want to mix live review games with independent practice and don't have a budget line for software.

Who it's not for. Corporate trainers and event hosts. Everything from the dashboard to the wording assumes a classroom.

The catch. Free covers 100 students and stores 20 activities, so you'll be archiving old quizzes to make room. Some question types are paid-only. The individual paid plan (Super) has been retired, and School and District plans are quote-only, so a single teacher who outgrows free has to go through their school.

How to migrate. Wayground imports questions from a spreadsheet built on its template. Copy your Kahoot! questions into that file (question, answer options, correct answer, time limit) and upload it. Tip: with only 20 activity slots, merge short quizzes from the same unit into one longer set before importing.

Mentimeter: interaction without the game-show noise

Best for business

Why switch to Mentimeter. If Kahoot! feels too loud for adults, Mentimeter is the opposite: clean slides where quiz questions sit next to polls, scales, word clouds and open Q&A. People join from their phone with a code, no account needed.

Who it's for. L&D teams, HR, internal comms, conference speakers and university lecturers running large groups.

Who it's not for. A middle school class that wants competition. Quizzes exist, but they're not what the product is built around.

The catch. The free plan allows 50 participants per month in total, not per session: two 30-person meetings use it up. Basic is $11.99 per presenter per month and Pro is $24.99, both billed yearly; Enterprise is by quote. Education pricing is lower: Basic at $8.99, Pro at $14.99 (Pro is annual only).

How to migrate. We didn't find a quiz import in Mentimeter, so plan on retyping. Tip: Mentimeter refunds within 14 days as long as you haven't used the plan in a live presentation. Build and rehearse your first session before you present it, and you keep that exit open.

Socrative: check what students know, minus the leaderboard

Assessment

Why switch to Socrative. Kahoot! rewards the fastest thumb. Socrative shows you who actually understood: launch a quiz, students answer at their own pace, and you watch results fill in by student and by question. There's a team race mode if you want a bit of play, but it's optional.

Who it's for. Teachers who rely on formative assessment, like quick checks mid-unit and exit tickets, and want per-student data they can act on.

Who it's not for. Conferences and corporate sessions. The product thinks in rooms and students.

The catch. Free keeps 5 quizzes, one room and 50 students per activity. Essentials is $10 a month ($120 a year) for 5 rooms; Pro is $16.67 a month ($200.04 a year, two-seat minimum) for 30 rooms and 300 students. A school-wide plan is available by quote. Prices are per teacher.

How to migrate. Expect to retype your questions. Tip: on the free plan, spend your 5 quiz slots on assessment quizzes and keep warm-up games somewhere else. Once you want a separate room per class period, Essentials starts paying for itself.

ClassPoint: quiz questions built into your slides

Inside PowerPoint

Why switch to ClassPoint. With Kahoot!, you leave your deck, run the game, then find your place again. ClassPoint is a PowerPoint add-in that turns slides into questions: multiple choice, short answer, drawing on the slide. The lesson stays in one file.

Who it's for. Teachers and trainers on Windows who build everything in PowerPoint and don't want another tool to learn.

Who it's not for. Google Slides or Keynote users, and anyone who wants to assign quizzes as homework.

The catch. Free allows 25 students per class and 3 classes. Pro is $8 a month or $96 a year for up to 200 students; Premium is by quote. A big class blows past the free tier quickly.

How to migrate. Nothing to import, strictly speaking: you add a question slide wherever you used to launch a Kahoot!. Tip: move your best Kahoot! questions, the ones that started arguments, to right before the concept they test. That's where they do the most work.

AhaSlides: for trainers who don't want a yearly contract

Monthly billing

Why switch to AhaSlides. AhaSlides puts slides, quizzes, polls and Q&A in one deck. Its free plan takes 50 live participants with unlimited presentations, enough for most small-group sessions. And unlike Kahoot! 360, which is annual-only, AhaSlides offers both monthly and yearly billing, handy if your training runs in seasons.

Who it's for. Freelance trainers, small teams and workshop facilitators who want one tool for the talk and the interaction.

Who it's not for. Classrooms that need self-paced homework, or enterprises that expect procurement-style contracts.

The catch. Above 50 live participants you need a paid plan, and the pricing page leans on team examples rather than a simple grid, so we don't quote a number here. Price it against your real headcount before you commit. There's a 14-day refund window.

How to migrate. We didn't find a documented Kahoot! import, so count on retyping. Tip: don't copy everything. Rebuild one standard session (icebreaker quiz, poll, Q&A) and duplicate it for each new cohort.

Wooclap: big live audiences and university lectures

Higher ed and events

Why switch to Wooclap. Wooclap, a Belgian company, is built for lecture halls and events: quizzes, word clouds, open questions and image-based questions, all running live. Its free Starter plan accepts up to 1,000 participants per event, far more than any Kahoot! free tier.

Who it's for. University instructors, event organizers and training teams that need large live audiences.

Who it's not for. Anyone who wants to run many quizzes for free: Starter caps you at 5 questions per month.

The catch. Basic and Pro are billed yearly per presenter, before tax, and the amounts aren't printed on the pricing page we read, so you'll need the configurator or sales. Corporate and Campus plans start at 6 presenters, by quote. Wooclap gives its full product free to secondary school teachers, but only in France and Belgium.

How to migrate. Wooclap imports quizzes from its Excel template and offers help to teams moving over from Kahoot!. Ask for it before you start retyping.

Migration plan

Leaving Kahoot! in seven steps

Swapping quiz tools looks trivial until an annual plan auto-renews or a first session flops in front of 30 people. This order protects your budget, your question bank and your first live run.

01

Audit your kahoots before you move anything

Day 1

Sort your library into three piles: quizzes you run every year, one-offs, and drafts. Only the first pile is worth moving.

This matters more than it sounds, because free plans cap storage: Wayground keeps 20 activities, Socrative 5 quizzes.

Time
about an hour
Payoff
less retyping
02

Copy your questions into a spreadsheet

Longest step

For each quiz you keep, make one row per question: the question, the options, the correct answer, the time limit. Save images in a separate folder, named by question number.

Download your destination's import template first (Wooclap and Wayground both have one) and fill its columns directly, so you only convert once.

Format

Risk if rushed
answer keys out of line
03

Save the results you'll need later

If you used games for grades, progress tracking or proof that a training happened, pull those results before you cancel. Once the subscription ends, you're no longer in control of what stays available.

File them by date and group, outside the tool.

Who needs this
grades, training records
04

Import, then proofread every quiz

Critical

Upload your file, then check every question from the participant's phone view, not just your own screen. The usual mistakes: the correct answer on the wrong row, a long option cut off on mobile, a missing image.

In Mentimeter, AhaSlides, Socrative or ClassPoint you'll type questions by hand. Use that pass to rewrite questions that only made sense with a Kahoot! timer.

Check
participant view on a phone
05

Do a dry run

Run the quiz with two or three phones or a colleague. Check the join code, load time on your room's network, and how it looks on the projector.

With Mentimeter, keep the rehearsal out of live mode if you want to keep the 14-day refund.

Time
15 minutes

06

Tell your audience about the change

Your students or attendees are used to going to Kahoot's join page. Share the new link or code a session ahead and put it on screen at the start.

Keep the first game on the new tool short and easy. The only goal is that everyone gets in.

one session before the switch
07

Cancel at the right time

Budget

Kahoot! 360 Pro plans are annual: note the renewal date and cancel before it, or you're in for another twelve months. Check the exact plan name on your invoice too, so you don't cancel a personal account while a team workspace keeps billing.

If a renewal has already gone through, contact support right away. The earlier you ask, the easier the conversation.

Pitfalls

What makes a quiz tool switch go wrong

Teachers and trainers who switch tend to trip over the same things. None of them is technical. They're oversights, and you pay for each one either in front of a group or on an invoice.

Ignoring how the limit is counted

Kahoot! caps players per game, Mentimeter caps participants per month, Wayground caps students and stored activities, Socrative caps quizzes and rooms. 50 people a month is not the same as 50 people a session. Compare against your real rhythm: sessions per month times group size.

Missing the annual renewal

It's the most common complaint in reviews: a plan renewed for a full year by accident. Set a reminder a month before the date, and know who on your team controls billing.

Using an education plan for business, or the reverse

Education pricing usually asks for proof you're an educator, and Wooclap's free full access applies only to secondary school teachers in France and Belgium. A company, a training provider or a university goes through paid plans.

Reusing a game quiz in a quiet assessment

A quiz designed around a timer and a podium works poorly as a silent check for understanding, and vice versa. Use the move to adapt: more open questions in Mentimeter, tighter assessment items in Socrative.

Not testing on the room's network

A tool that works at home can stall on a filtered school or office network. Run your dry run from the actual room, with a phone on the guest Wi-Fi.

Forgetting student data

For minors, check where the vendor hosts data and what your district allows; at least one university didn't approve Kahoot! in its own security review. To go further, see our guide to switching from Google Forms, our reviews of Typeform and FlexiQuiz, and our ranking of quiz tools for education.

  • Quizzes sorted: only the ones you reuse are moving
  • Destination's import template downloaded
  • Questions, options and answer keys copied, images saved separately
  • Results you need saved outside Kahoot!
  • Every quiz checked on a phone screen
  • Dry run done from the real room
  • New link or code shared with your audience
  • Kahoot! renewal date noted and plan canceled before it
FAQ · 6 questions

Kahoot alternatives: frequently asked questions

  • What's a free Kahoot alternative that allows more players?

Wayground's free plan covers 100 students, and Wooclap's free Starter plan takes up to 1,000 participants per event, though only 5 questions a month. ClassPoint allows 25 students per class for free, AhaSlides 50 live participants. Mentimeter's 50 is per month in total, so it fills up fastest.

  • What's the best Kahoot alternative for corporate training?

Mentimeter for large groups and a professional tone, AhaSlides for small cohorts if you'd rather pay monthly. For comparison, Kahoot! 360 Pro Start is $108 a year for 50 participants, billed yearly only, with one license per host and no invoice payment on Pro.

  • Can I export my kahoots to another tool?

The dependable route is to copy your questions into your new tool's import template: Wooclap and Wayground both accept spreadsheets, and Wooclap offers help to teams coming from Kahoot!. Images don't travel in a spreadsheet, so keep them in a folder. For Mentimeter, AhaSlides, Socrative and ClassPoint, plan on retyping.

  • Which Kahoot alternative works for self-paced quizzes?

Wayground. Students work through questions on their own device at their own speed, and you can assign quizzes as homework, all on the free plan. Socrative also lets students answer at their own pace in class, with results by student.

  • What's the cheapest paid option?

Among published prices, Kahoot!+ Bronze at $36 a year is the cheapest entry, but it covers only 50 participants. ClassPoint Pro is $96 a year for 200 students, Socrative Essentials $120 a year. For business presenting, Mentimeter Basic is $8.99 a month on education pricing, and $11.99 a month billed yearly for everyone else.

  • How many players does free Kahoot! allow?

Not many: not enough for a full class, and Kahoot's own pricing page gives one number in its plan table and a different one in its FAQ. Check the limit in your account before class. The usual workaround is team mode, capped at 3 teams on free. The free business tier, Express, allows 15 participants for 15 minutes.
