Placeit alternatives: where to go and how to cancel without surprises

Seven destinations, one for each reason to leave, and a seven-step exit plan.

The short answer: Canva if you already design there, since its built-in mockups (the old Smartmockups) work without a paid plan. Mediamodifier for the closest like-for-like swap, with unlimited downloads at $19 a month. Dynamic Mockups if you sell on Etsy or Shopify and want scenes nobody else uses. Kittl if you design your own shirts. And if you sell print-on-demand, start with your print provider's free mockup generator. One rule before you cancel: at Placeit, a single download during your current billing period rules out any refund. We compared these seven destinations and how to move to each from Placeit in 2026.

The ranking is editorial: a sponsored spot is always labeled on its card, and no affiliate link changes a score.

The real reasons

Why so many subscribers are shopping around

Placeit, owned by Envato, still has real strengths. Its mockups with human models are among the deepest for apparel. One subscription covers mockups, logos and videos, commercial use is included, and your downloads stay yours after you cancel. So people don't leave because it's bad. They leave for one of these six reasons.

Charges after canceling

It's the most common complaint in public reviews, where Placeit averages around 2 out of 5 across more than 1,300 reviews. Subscribers describe being charged $90 to $106 after canceling, or hit by an annual renewal with no warning. The company rarely replies to negative reviews. Always keep proof that you canceled.

No refund after your first download

Placeit's help center is explicit: if you downloaded anything during the paid period, there's no refund, full or partial. A download also locks you into a one-month minimum. If you only wanted to try one mockup, you still pay for the month.

Confusing pricing

The annual plan costs $89.69 a year ($7.47 a month); the monthly price only shows up at checkout. Yet the same pricing page also shows "$8.33 a month, save 58%," and its FAQ mentions "33% off." Three numbers for one plan. Annual billing comes as one lump sum, so mark the date.

A thin editor and dated templates

Placeit fills a template: you swap text, colors and the image. Unhappy users say there are "virtually no editing tools" and that many templates feel dated. If you want to build a scene yourself or bring your own Photoshop file (PSD), you need another tool.

Mockups everyone on Etsy has seen

A Placeit scene that converts gets picked up by thousands of sellers. Search Etsy and the same bedroom, the same model and the same folded tee repeat from shop to shop. Your listing loses what made it stand out. To fix that, you need scenes of your own.

A non-exclusive license

Placeit's license allows commercial use and selling customized products. But templates aren't exclusive: to trademark a logo, the license asks you to add your own elements, and Placeit doesn't warrant that registration will go through. The license is also revocable and tied to each payment. For a growing brand, that's a weak spot.

The 7 alternatives

Placeit alternatives, tool by tool

For each tool: why move to it, who it's for, its limit, how to switch from Placeit, and what it costs. Prices are what each vendor shows in 2026, in US dollars, before sales tax. When a tool already has a score on our site, we reuse it as is, for example from our logo maker rankings.

01

Canva: mockups inside the app you already use

Default pick

Why move to Canva. Canva bought Smartmockups, shut it down and folded its mockups into the editor. You drop your design onto a tee, a mug, a phone or a poster without leaving your project. Mockups work without a subscription, and Canva Pro opens a larger library. If your social posts and flyers already live in Canva, you cut one subscription instead of swapping it.

Who it's for. Creators, freelancers and small shops who want graphics, mockups and social content in one place.

Who it's not for. Apparel sellers who depend on on-model shots. Even a Placeit competitor concedes that Placeit's human-model mockups run deeper than Canva's for merch.

Its limit. Paid elements show a watermark on the free plan. A logo SVG needs Pro, and a logo built on a Canva template can't be trademarked, same as Placeit. Our guide to leaving Canva covers the rest.

How to switch. Nothing to export: Placeit doesn't keep projects you can reuse elsewhere. Upload your designs as transparent PNGs, rebuild your three or four best-selling mockups, and compare them side by side before canceling Placeit.

Price. Free to start; Canva Pro billed monthly or yearly, price shown at checkout.

Mediamodifier: the most direct replacement

Closest to Placeit

Why move to Mediamodifier. Same idea as Placeit: a big library of ready-to-fill mockups, over 10,000 of them, plus design templates. Downloads are unlimited on Professional. Your workflow barely changes, and fewer sellers know the catalog.

Who it's for. Sellers and small studios who mostly made mockups on Placeit, and teams that want to automate: the Team plan adds a mockup API, so your store or scripts can generate images on their own.

Who it's not for. Anyone who relied on Placeit's videos and animated intros. Mediamodifier is about still images.

Its limit. Its pricing page shows two annual figures side by side: $190 a year ($15.83 a month) and a card at $8.25 a month. Check the exact amount at checkout.

How to switch. Bring your designs as PNGs, find catalog scenes close to your best sellers, and redo your main listing photos first. Tip: pay monthly for one month, rebuild your whole catalog, then stop.

Price. Professional $19 a month or $190 a year; Team $45 a month or $450 a year for 5 members, plus $90 a year per extra member.

Dynamic Mockups: your own scenes, wired to Etsy and Shopify

Best for Etsy

Why move to Dynamic Mockups. It solves the seen-it-everywhere problem. You upload your own Photoshop files (PSDs) or AI-generated scenes, and the tool places your designs on them in bulk. Pro connects to Etsy and Shopify and unlocks the API without a watermark.

Who it's for. Etsy and Shopify sellers who list a lot of designs and want a look of their own. Our roundup of Etsy seller tools pairs well with it.

Who it's not for. Anyone who wants a huge ready-made library with zero prep. The value here comes from your scenes.

Its limit. Everything runs on credits, not unlimited use: 3,600 credits a year on Pro, then $0.051 per credit for top-ups. Run the math on your real listing volume.

How to switch. Buy or build three or four PSDs that fit your brand, upload your designs, then connect your shop. Keep your old Placeit images live until the main photos are replaced.

Price. Free with 50 starter credits, then 3 AI images and 1 video a day, personal PSDs and a watermarked API; Pro from $15 a month billed yearly.

Kittl: design and present your merch in one place

Best for designers

Why move to Kittl. Placeit has you fill a template; Kittl has you design. It's an editor built for apparel and print-on-demand, with over 10,000 templates and mockups. Every paid plan includes a commercial license for up to 500,000 copies.

Who it's for. Shirt, sticker and poster creators who want to design and mock up without switching apps.

Who it's not for. Anyone who wants a two-click mockup and never touches the design. Kittl takes a bit of learning.

Its limit. The free plan is personal use only, with no commercial rights. Don't sell anything made on it. Pricing is per editor, so a team of three pays three times.

How to switch. Import your source files (PNG or SVG) and rebuild your mockups from Kittl templates. If your designs came from Placeit templates, recreate them: you end up owning a file you can keep editing.

Price. Free (personal use); Pro $12, Expert $26, Max $48 per editor per month, billed yearly.

Mockuuups Studio: pay per mockup, not per month

Best for occasional use

Why move to Mockuuups Studio. Plenty of people keep Placeit for three images a quarter. Mockuuups fixes that: 5 free exports with no card, then $5 per export, or $39 for a pack of 10. You pay for what you use.

Who it's for. Freelancers, app makers and small brands who need a few device, screen or product mockups now and then.

Who it's not for. Apparel sellers: the library of 5,300+ mockups leans toward screens and desk scenes.

Its limit. Less choice than Placeit, and no video or logo maker.

How to switch. Nothing to move. Use your 5 free exports to check the quality, then buy as you go.

Price. 5 free exports; $5 per export or $39 for 10; Professional $20 a month or $144 a year; Team $18 per person per month.

Freepik: stock, mockup files and AI in one subscription

Broadest

Why move to Freepik. Freepik, a Spanish company, combines a stock library of photos and vectors, downloadable mockup files and AI image tools. If you paid for Placeit plus a stock site, one plan can cover both.

Who it's for. Designers and marketers who make lots of different visuals, not just mockups.

Who it's not for. Anyone who wants to drop a design on a shirt in the browser with no other software. Many Freepik mockups are PSD files you open in Photoshop or an equivalent.

Its limit. The offer is broad and changes often: in 2026 its AI platform took the name Magnific. AI credits burn fast once you touch video, and the free tier has no commercial license. Our Freepik Spaces review scores it 3.7/5.

How to switch. Nothing to move. Find PSD mockups close to your Placeit scenes and set up one template per product type.

Price. Premium $20 a month, or $14.50 a month billed yearly, before tax.

Placeit and its 7 alternatives side by side

Our default pick: Canva if you already design there, Mediamodifier if you want the same kind of mockup library, better organized. For a sense of scale over a year: Placeit costs $89.69 billed yearly, Mediamodifier $190, Kittl Pro $144, Mockuuups Professional $144, and your print provider's generator nothing at all. Leaving Placeit in seven steps

With Placeit, the order matters more than where you land. Each step protects something: your money, your files, and your rights to what you already sell.

01

Check your renewal date

First

In your Placeit account, check whether you're on monthly or yearly billing and note the next charge date. On the yearly plan that's $89.69 in one go, and many subscribers say no reminder came. Put an alert in your calendar a week ahead.

Time
5 minutes
Risk if skipped
a full year charged
02

Download everything you need

Files you already downloaded stay yours after canceling, but you can't make new ones. List your live products and brand visuals, and grab the final versions in every size you use (listing, social, banner).

If you haven't downloaded anything this period and want a refund, do the opposite: download nothing and go straight to canceling.

Time
1 to 2 hours

03

Get your source files out of Placeit

Your logo and designs should live somewhere other than Placeit. Keep a high-resolution transparent PNG of each design in a folder you own. For a logo you'll print large or trademark, get it redrawn as a vector (SVG or PDF).

04

Reread the license for what you already sell

Trap

Placeit's license lets you sell customized products when their value comes from your design, not the raw template. It's tied to each payment and revocable. For products already on sale, keep your Placeit invoices: they show you held the license when you made the image.

For a brand logo, don't rely on a Placeit template: the license asks you to add your own elements and doesn't guarantee registration.

05

Redo your best sellers first

Don't rebuild the whole catalog at once. Start with the main photos of your top ten listings in the new tool. Watch sales or clicks for two to three weeks. If the new image holds up, move on to the rest.

Cancel from My Account and keep proof

Trap

Cancel from your account, under My Account, at least 24 hours before renewal. Screenshot the confirmation and keep the email. You keep template access until the end of the paid cycle.

If you downloaded nothing, canceling can take effect right away. Otherwise the one-month minimum applies.

Watch your statement the next month

Look at your card statement on the renewal date. If you're charged after canceling, email support with your screenshot. If nobody answers, your card issuer can help you dispute the charge. Also disconnect Placeit from any linked tool, such as Printify's product creator.

Exit pitfalls

What trips people up when leaving Placeit

The same mistakes show up again and again in former subscribers' reviews. None of them is technical. They're oversights, and each one costs dollars or files.

Downloading "just one more file"

One download in the current period and the refund is gone. If you want your money back, cancel first and touch nothing.

Forgetting the yearly plan

For many subscribers, the annual renewal lands with no reminder. A calendar alert takes thirty seconds; a year of Placeit costs $89.69.

Canceling with no proof

Several former subscribers say they were charged after canceling. Without a screenshot or confirmation email, your dispute gets much harder.

Leaving your logo in a template

A logo made from a Placeit template isn't yours alone. Get it redrawn before you trademark it or print it big. Our logo maker rankings show which tools deliver a real vector file.

Swapping the whole catalog at once

Main photos drive sales. Replace them in small batches and measure: a new mockup can do worse than the old one.

Landing on the same scenes elsewhere

Leaving Placeit for free mockups everyone else uses fixes nothing. Use scenes of your own, or rework catalog ones: background, props, colors.

  • Renewal date noted
  • Final images downloaded (or nothing, if you want a refund)
  • Designs saved as transparent PNGs outside Placeit
  • Placeit invoices kept
  • Ten listings redone and measured

  • Statement checked the next month
FAQ · 8 questions

Placeit alternatives: FAQ

  • How much does Placeit cost in 2026?

$89.69 a year, which works out to $7.47 a month, per its pricing page. A monthly plan exists too, but its price only appears at checkout. There's one paid plan, Unlimited, with unlimited downloads and commercial use. Ignore the "$8.33" and "58%" figures also shown on the page: the yearly charge is $89.69.

  • Is there a free alternative to Placeit?

Yes. Canva's mockups work without a paid plan, Printful's and Printify's generators are free with your account, and Mockuuups Studio gives 5 exports with no card. Skip Kittl's free plan for anything you sell: it excludes commercial use.

  • How do I cancel my Placeit subscription?

From your account, under My Account, at least 24 hours before renewal. Screenshot the confirmation. You keep template access until the end of the paid period, and your downloads stay yours.

  • Does Placeit give refunds?

Not if you downloaded anything during the period: no full or partial refund. With no downloads, you can cancel right away. If you're hoping for a refund, download nothing before you cancel.

  • Can I keep selling shirts made with Placeit after canceling?

The license allows selling customized products when the value comes from your design. It's tied to each payment, so keep your invoices to show you held the license when you made the design. Reselling the raw template is never allowed.

  • Is Placeit included in Envato Elements?

Placeit belongs to Envato, but it's a separate subscription with its own billing. Don't count on your Envato plan to cover it: check your account to see what your plan includes.

  • What about Renderforest or Mockey?

Both show up in every roundup. Renderforest is strong on video and animated intros, Mockey on free AI-generated mockups. Neither pricing page shows a clear, stable amount, so check the price at checkout before you commit.

  • What should I use for a logo instead of Placeit?

For a logo you plan to trademark, skip template tools: pick a maker that delivers a real vector file, or hire a designer. Our logo maker rankings compare the options, Canva included.
