ShipStation alternatives: where to go and how to switch cleanly

Five destinations, one per reason to leave, and a seven-step migration plan.

Short answer: Pirate Ship if you ship USPS and UPS and never want a monthly fee again, Veeqo if you sell on Amazon and want free shipping software, Shippo if you want a ShipStation-style tool at a lower price, Ordoro if you want a free plan with up to 100 labels and room to grow, Sendcloud if you ship mostly in Europe. One thing first: ShipStation keeps your shipment history and won't hand it to anyone else. Export it before you cancel. We compared these five tools and checked their pricing pages in 2026.

The real reasons

Why sellers are leaving ShipStation

ShipStation still has fans: it sits around 4.6 out of 5 on the big review sites, and its automation rules get a lot of praise. People leave for other reasons: the bill, the support queue, sync gaps, and the exit itself. Six reasons, all checked in 2026.

Your bill follows your volume

ShipStation prices by shipments per month. Starter runs from $14.99 for 50 shipments to $174.99 for 5,000, and stops there. Standard runs from $29.99 to $3,599.99 at 100,000 shipments, Premium from $349.99 to $7,499.99. A strong holiday month can push you into the next tier. In 2025 the old grid of eight tiers, from $9.99 to $159.99, became three plans, and many reviews describe a bill that jumped with short notice.

API and branded tracking cost a plan upgrade

Starter has no API, no branded tracking page, and no international shipping on your own carrier account. Those sit on Standard, which costs $29.99 for 50 shipments instead of $14.99. If a custom script or connector uses the API, the cheap plan no longer works for you. Threads on the ShipStation subreddit ask the obvious question: what am I even paying $29.99 for now?

Support that goes quiet

The Shopify App Store listing still holds 4.2 out of 5 across 710 reviews, but the one and two star reviews say the same thing: tickets left unanswered for close to a month, and an outsourced team. When a label won't print on a Monday morning, that matters more than any feature.

Orders that only import once

ShipStation imports an order a single time. If the customer changes the address or you edit the order in your store afterward, the change never comes back down. Several sellers also describe store connections that drop and need a manual reconnect. The result is a package that ships to the old address.

Billing surprises

Low star reviews mention charges close to three times the usual plan rate, after a volume spike they did not see coming. Check your shipment count on the billing page every month, not just at renewal. Since the plan is set by volume, a single promotion that doubles your orders can move you up a tier, and the higher price applies whether or not the spike lasts.

A painful exit

Only the admin user can cancel. If an agency or a former employee opened the account, you need that access back first. Trustpilot reviewers, who give ShipStation 3.4 out of 5, call the process tedious. And your shipment history stays inside ShipStation: no other tool imports it.

The 5 alternatives

ShipStation alternatives, tool by tool

For each tool: why move there, who it fits, its limit, how to move from ShipStation, and what it costs. Prices are the ones shown in 2026, before postage.

01

Pirate Ship: when you're done paying a subscription

No monthly fee

Why move. Pirate Ship charges no monthly fees, no payment fees, and no hidden costs. You open a free account, compare USPS and UPS rates on one screen, and pay only for postage. For a small store, that alone can wipe out the ShipStation line on the card statement. Compare that with ShipStation Starter: $14.99 a month for just 50 shipments, and $29.99 for 100.

Who it fits. US sellers who ship with USPS and UPS, from a handful of orders a week up to a steady small business.

Who it doesn't fit. Anyone who needs FedEx, DHL Express, or many carriers at once: Pirate Ship sticks to USPS and UPS. Heavy automation users will also miss ShipStation's rules.

Its limit. The carrier list. If your rate shopping depends on a third carrier, look at Shippo instead.

How to move. Connect your store, ship a day of orders from Pirate Ship while ShipStation finishes what it already imported, and recreate your package presets with real weights. Before you disconnect ShipStation, export your shipments: Pirate Ship starts with an empty history, and your old tracking numbers only live in that CSV. If you used ShipStation automation rules to pick a carrier by weight, write them down as a short cheat sheet for whoever packs orders, since Pirate Ship will not replay them.

Veeqo: free shipping software for Amazon sellers

Free for Amazon

Why move. Veeqo, owned by Amazon, lists its Shipping plan as free with unlimited orders a month. In its own words, the shipping features are free to use for everyone. If ShipStation's per-shipment grid is the problem, Veeqo removes the variable completely.

Who it fits. Sellers whose volume comes mostly from Amazon, with Shopify or eBay on the side, in the US or the UK.

Who it doesn't fit. Sellers outside the US and UK: Veeqo's pricing pages only cover those two markets.

Its limit. The free part is shipping. Inventory management starts at $19 a month and the High Volume plan at $350, both priced by order volume. So the real question is not whether Veeqo is free, but whether you will want its inventory side. If you only print labels, you may never pay a cent. If you also want stock sync across channels, budget for it from the start and compare it with what ShipStation Standard costs you today.

How to move. Connect your channels, map your carriers, and run a week in parallel with ShipStation before you disconnect it. Start with your Amazon channel, since that is where Veeqo is strongest, then add Shopify or eBay once labels and tracking sync cleanly. Keep inventory in your current system at first: the shipping plan is free, but inventory features are billed by order volume, so only move them once you know the monthly cost at your real order count.

Shippo: the lighter ShipStation

Closest swap

Why move. Shippo does the same job as ShipStation with less to manage day to day, which is what several users say when they compare the two. It covers USPS, UPS, FedEx and DHL Express on one screen, and imports Etsy, eBay and Shopify orders.

Who it fits. Stores that ship a few dozen to a few thousand labels a month and want rate shopping across carriers.

Who it doesn't fit. Warehouses that need heavy inventory and pick lists: Shippo stays focused on the label.

Its limit. Starter is free up to 30 labels a month. Pro costs $19 a month billed monthly, or $17 a month if you pay $205 for the year, and climbs to $199 for 10,000 labels. Watch post-delivery adjustments when declared weights are off: several sellers say they found these charges without a clear explanation, so weigh every package template before you create it. If you pay yearly, the $205 locks you in for twelve months, so run a month on the monthly plan first. Our score: 3.8 out of 5. Full details in our Shippo review and Shippo pricing.

How to move. Connect your store, rebuild your package templates, and add your own carrier accounts if you have them. Shippo also plugs into your other tools through Make.

Ordoro: a free plan with room to grow

Free tier

Why move. Ordoro's free Shipping plan covers 100 labels a month with barcode scanning, your logo on labels, Quick Ship and return labels. When you outgrow it, Advanced costs $59 a month for 3,000 labels, five sales channels and unlimited users, and Premium $149 for unlimited labels.

Who it fits. Stores that ship under 100 labels today but expect to grow, and teams that want unlimited users without paying per seat.

Who it doesn't fit. A store near the 100-label line in a busy month.

Its limit. Going over 100 labels a month on the free plan triggers a temporary account lock. The free plan also has no automation rules, no batch processing and no phone support.

How to move. Use the 15-day trial, no card required, to run Ordoro next to ShipStation on your real orders. Count your labels over your busiest month from the ShipStation export first. If you shipped more than 100, start directly on Advanced: a temporary lock in the middle of a busy week costs more than the $59. The free plan also allows one sales channel and one ship-from location, so a store selling on Shopify and Amazon needs Advanced from day one.

Sendcloud: when you ship mostly in Europe

European

Why move. If your customers are in Europe, Sendcloud covers more than 160 carriers with negotiated rates or your own contracts, checkout delivery options, branded tracking and a returns portal, with more than 100 integrations.

Who it fits. Stores shipping from the EU, and US brands with a European warehouse.

Who it doesn't fit. A US-only store: the carriers that matter to you are elsewhere, and Sendcloud bills in euros, not dollars.

Its limit. You pay twice: Free at €0, Lite €35, Growth €109, Premium €219, Pro €799 a month, then €0.12 to €0.08 per label, plus €0.15 for each label past your included volume. Automated returns start on Premium. Our score: 3.7 out of 5. See our Sendcloud review, Sendcloud pricing, Sendcloud with Make and Shippo vs Sendcloud.

How to move. Connect your store, then bring in other systems by CSV or API. Guided onboarding only comes with Pro and Enterprise.

ShipStation and its alternatives side by side

Our default pick: Pirate Ship for a small US store, Shippo if you want the closest swap. At 500 shipments a month, ShipStation Starter costs $39.99 and Standard $89.99, while Pirate Ship and Veeqo's shipping plan charge no subscription.

Switch from ShipStation in seven steps

Order matters. A shipping switch comes down to two things: no order left behind, and proof of every shipment kept.

01

List everything running in ShipStation

Day 1

Write down every connected store, carrier account, package preset, automation rule and user. Screenshot your rules: you will rebuild them by hand in the new tool. Check who the admin user is, because only that person can cancel.

Time
one hour to half a day
Risk if rushed
a forgotten rule
02

Export your shipment history

Before anything

Your history stays in ShipStation. Filter the shipments view to the period you need and pick Export Shipments, not Line Items, which exports products rather than packages. Keep your cost reports by carrier too: you will need them to compare your next bill.

Format

03

Open the new account and connect carriers

Setup

Create your account and connect your own carrier accounts if you have them. Otherwise, compare the rates the tool offers on your three most common package sizes. Ship one trial label per carrier before going further.

04

Rebuild package presets with real weights

Savings

Weigh every empty box and your best sellers, then rebuild presets. An underdeclared weight becomes a billed adjustment after delivery with every carrier. Fix the guesses you carried over from ShipStation now.

05

Run both tools in parallel

One to two weeks

Connect the store to the new tool but keep ShipStation live. Pick a cutoff time: orders before it ship from ShipStation, orders after it from the new tool. ShipStation imports an order once, so never delete and recreate an order to resend it.

Rule

06

Cut over and disconnect the store

Go live

Once every ShipStation order has shipped, disconnect the store from ShipStation. Check that tracking numbers sync back to your store from the new tool and that shipping emails go out.

07

Cancel from the admin account

Done

Wait until the last packages are delivered and claims are closed. Run one final export, then cancel from the admin user. On an annual plan, check the renewal date before you pick your cutover week.

Migration pitfalls

What makes a ShipStation switch go wrong

The same mistakes come up over and over. None of them are technical. They are things people forget, and each one costs more than the time it would have taken to avoid it.

Canceling before exporting

No export means no tracking numbers and no costs. The day a customer disputes a delivery, your proof is gone.

Finding out too late who the admin is

Only the admin can cancel. An account opened by an agency or a former employee can stall the whole switch. Sort it out on day one.

Comparing subscriptions, not cost per package

A free tool can cost more per label, and a cheap plan can add per-label fees. Divide your full bill (plan, fees, postage) by your package count over a real month.

Letting two tools print the same label

During the parallel run, an order can show up in both tools. Without a clear cutoff, you pay twice and ship twice.

Ignoring the free plan ceiling

Free plans cap volume: 30 labels at Shippo, 100 at Ordoro, with a lock above that. Size your plan for your busiest month, not your average one.

Switching in peak season

A switch takes one to two weeks of tuning. Do it away from Black Friday and December, when mistakes are cheap.

FAQ · 8 questions

ShipStation alternatives: frequently asked questions

  • What is the best free alternative to ShipStation?

Pirate Ship if you ship USPS and UPS: no monthly fee at all. Veeqo if you sell on Amazon: its shipping plan is free with unlimited orders. Ordoro gives 100 free labels a month. Our shipping software ranking covers the rest.

  • Is there anything cheaper than ShipStation?

Yes. Pirate Ship and Veeqo's shipping plan cost nothing. Shippo Pro costs $19 a month billed monthly, where ShipStation Standard starts at $29.99 for 50 shipments.

  • Why did ShipStation raise its prices?

In 2025 ShipStation replaced eight tiers, from $9.99 to $159.99, with three plans priced by monthly shipments. For many stores, the API and branded tracking moved to a pricier plan.

  • Does my ShipStation history transfer to a new tool?

No. Export it yourself with Export Shipments and keep the CSV as an archive. No other tool imports it for you.

  • What is the best ShipStation alternative for Amazon sellers?

Veeqo. Amazon owns it, and the shipping features are free for everyone. It covers the US and the UK.

  • How long does switching shipping software take?

Plan one to two weeks in parallel for a simple store. Rebuilding automation rules and package presets takes longer than opening the account.

  • Does ShipStation have a free trial?

Yes, 30 days without a credit card. Use the same habit in reverse: start the new tool's trial and ship real orders with it before you cancel.

  • Can I keep my automations during the switch?

Partly. ShipStation and Shippo both connect to Make, so you can keep workflows running while you move. See ShipStation with Make.
