Twilio alternatives: where to go and how to switch without downtime
Five destinations, one per reason to leave, and a seven-step migration plan.
The short answer: go with Telnyx if most of your traffic is in the US and you want the lowest per-message price with voice that still reads TwiML. Pick Plivo if you want the smallest code change. Choose Brevo if you mostly send marketing and transactional messages and want SMS, email and WhatsApp in one account. Salesmsg fits a team that wants to text customers from an inbox, with no code. Aircall fits a team that only ever needed a phone system. We compared these five in 2026 against each vendor's official pricing and against what developers who left Twilio actually report.
Some links are affiliate links. The ranking is editorial: a sponsored spot is always labeled on its card, and no affiliate link changes a score.
Why teams end up leaving Twilio
Twilio still has the best docs in the business, and most projects start there. The trouble starts at volume. The invoice gets hard to read, guaranteed support costs real money, and a frozen account can stop every text you send. Here are six reasons, each checked against Twilio's own pages or first-hand reports.
The base price is only the start
Twilio's US base rate went from $0.0079 to $0.0083 per segment. On top of that come carrier fees on every outbound long-code text: $0.0035 at AT&T, $0.0045 at T-Mobile and $0.005 at Verizon. So a text to a Verizon number really costs $0.0133 before registration fees. Twilio also charges $0.001 for every message that fails.
Carrier fees keep moving
T-Mobile raised its 10DLC outbound fee from $0.0030 to $0.0045 in early 2026. The Campaign Registry raised its brand and vetting fees in 2025 (brand $4.00 to $4.50, standard vetting $40.00 to $41.50). None of this is Twilio's choice, but it all lands on your Twilio invoice, and your budget from last year no longer holds.
10DLC approval can drag for weeks
To text US customers from a local number, carriers have to approve your brand and campaign. Rejections are common: a privacy policy that never mentions SMS, a legal name that doesn't match your EIN, a vague opt-in flow. Carriers return one reason per review cycle, and every fix restarts the clock. The $15 campaign vetting fee isn't refunded when you're rejected. Twilio doesn't make the call, which is why support answers often feel vague.
Free support has no guaranteed response time
The free Developer plan gives an estimated three business days, with no guarantee. A guaranteed response starts with Production, at $250 a month or 4% of your monthly spend, whichever is higher. Business costs $1,500 or 6%. When your login codes stop arriving, three days is a long wait.
A suspension stops everything
A zero balance suspends the project. A fraud flag can block calls and texts while Twilio reviews the account. On voice AI forums, teams describe accounts frozen for "suspicious activity" with no clear cause, and one team waited weeks for a ticket reply while its numbers sat dead. Auto-recharge and a backup provider are cheap insurance.
SMS pumping fraud lands on your bill
Fraudsters hit your signup or OTP form to trigger thousands of texts to premium numbers. One uptime monitoring service saw about 8,000 texts to Morocco in 12 hours, close to $1,800, before its account was suspended. Twilio refunded it in credit, but its pumping protection costs $0.025 per message and its Verify guarantee only credits Verify fees. Country permissions remain your best defense, on any provider.
You're leaving because… go to…

Twilio alternatives, one by one
For each one: why move there, who it fits, its catch, how to migrate from Twilio, and what it costs. Prices come from official pricing pages in 2026, before tax.
The tools
Telnyx: the closest API to Twilio, at about half the US price
Cheapest US SMSWhy switch to Telnyx. Telnyx sells the same building blocks as Twilio (SMS, voice, numbers). In the US it charges $0.004 per message part, outbound and inbound, plus carrier fees. Twilio charges $0.0083. Numbers cost $1.00 a month instead of $1.15. For voice, its TeXML API reads TwiML, so your existing call flows mostly move over as they are.
Who it's for. Product teams and voice AI builders with most of their traffic in the US, and a developer who can own the cutover.
Who it's not for. A small business that just wants to text customers from a screen. Telnyx is an API first, and you'll need code.
The catch. Automatic volume discounts only start above 100 million message parts a month. Telnyx will cover your 10DLC re-registration ($15 per campaign, $4 per brand), but only with a two-year commitment and a $5,000 monthly minimum. Its Growth plan, with a $2,000 monthly minimum, takes 15% off voice, messaging and numbers.
How to migrate. Your 10DLC campaigns don't follow your numbers. Register brand and campaign at Telnyx first, keep Twilio live while carriers review it, and only then port numbers. For voice, point one number at TeXML and compare call logs for a week before moving the rest.
- US SMS
- $0.004 + carrier fees
- Number
- $1.00/month
- Best for
- US traffic, voice apps
- Catch
- discounts only at huge volume
Plivo: the lightest code change
Closest APIWhy switch to Plivo. Plivo's API maps closely to Twilio's: numbers, messages, status callbacks, the same SDK languages. US long-code texts cost $0.0077 plus the same carrier fees, and a local number rents for $0.50 a month, less than half of Twilio's $1.15. For international senders, France starts at $0.0664 per text against $0.0798 at Twilio.
Who it's for. SaaS teams sending notifications and login codes in several countries who want a lower bill without re-architecting.
Who it's not for. Teams that live inside Twilio's wider product line (Studio, Flex, Segment): Plivo covers the messaging and voice core, not the rest.
The catch. The per-text saving in the US is small (about 7% on the base rate), so most of the gain comes from number rental. Volume discounts aren't published, so you'll need to negotiate them.
How to migrate. Put every send behind one function in your code and swap the Twilio client for Plivo's there. Move one country or one flow at a time, and keep Twilio as a fallback for a month: if Plivo returns an error, your function retries through Twilio.

- $0.0077 + carrier fees
- Number
- $0.50/month
- France SMS
- from $0.0664

Brevo: SMS, email and WhatsApp in one account
MultichannelWhy switch to Brevo. Plenty of teams use Twilio for promotional texts and appointment reminders, then pay a second tool for email. Brevo puts SMS, email and WhatsApp in one place. SMS runs on credits that never expire, and the transactional API is open on every plan. Our Brevo review gives it 4.1 out of 5.
Who it's for. Ecommerce brands and service businesses that send campaigns and order or booking messages, and want a single sender and a single bill.
Who it's not for. Any product that makes phone calls. Brevo has no voice.
The catch. Credits are priced per destination country, and Brevo's calculator gives the US rate. As a reference outside the US, a text to France uses 4.5 credits, about €45 per 1,000. Run your own country mix before you commit. WhatsApp is only on the Pro and Enterprise plans. For high-volume OTP traffic, a dedicated API like Telnyx or Plivo stays more flexible.
How to migrate. Buy a small credit pack, register your sender, and replace the Twilio call with Brevo's transactional SMS call. Before any marketing send, import everyone who replied STOP on Twilio, so they stay opted out.
- SMS to France
- about €45 per 1,000
- API
- transactional, every plan
- Best for
- SMS + email + WhatsApp
- Catch
- no voice
Salesmsg: texting customers from a shared inbox
No codeWhy switch to Salesmsg. Some teams built a two-way texting inbox on Twilio for sales or support, then spent months maintaining it. Salesmsg gives you that inbox out of the box: shared conversations, templates, CRM sync. Plans start at $25 a month with 500 credits. Our Salesmsg review scores it 3.7 out of 5.
Who it's for. US sales and support teams who text customers one to one and in small batches.
Who it's not for. A product that sends automated codes or high-volume alerts. An API provider is cheaper and more flexible there.
The catch. Credits run out fast once you send in bulk, and you still go through 10DLC registration like everywhere else.
How to migrate. Start the 10DLC registration on day one, then port your texting numbers once it's approved. Our list of the best business SMS tools covers other no-code options.

Aircall: if you only needed a phone system
Team phoneWhy switch to Aircall. Some companies wired a call center on Twilio: a number, a queue, a transfer to sales. It works, but every change needs a developer. Aircall gives you numbers, queues, business hours, recording and CRM integrations from a dashboard. Our Aircall review rates it 3.2 out of 5.
Who it's for. Sales and support teams that want to make calls, not write code.
Who it's not for. Any product sending automated texts or verification codes. That isn't its job.
The catch. Pricing is per user, from $30 a month, with a three-seat minimum, so $90 a month to start. Our 3.2 also reflects mixed reports on call quality and billing.
How to migrate. Port your numbers into Aircall, and never release a number at Twilio before the port completes. For more options, see our ranking of VoIP business phone systems.

The 5 alternatives next to Twilio
To see the real gap, take 100,000 outbound US texts a month to Verizon customers. At Twilio, $0.0083 plus $0.005 in carrier fees comes to about $1,330. At Plivo, $0.0077 plus the same fee comes to about $1,270. At Telnyx, $0.004 plus the same fee comes to about $900. Carrier fees are identical everywhere, so the base rate and number rental are where you save. The table gives one row per tool: on the left what it covers, on the right its entry price and how you migrate.
| What it covers | Entry price and migration | |
|---|---|---|
| TwilioWhere you start | SMS, voice, WhatsApp, verification, almost every country | US SMS $0.0083 + carrier fees, 10DLC fees; numbers $1.15/month |
| TelnyxCheapest US | SMS, TwiML-compatible voice, numbers | $0.004 + carrier fees; numbers $1.00; redo 10DLC |
| PlivoClosest API | SMS, voice, numbers | $0.0077 + carrier fees; numbers $0.50; swap the client library |
| BrevoMultichannel | SMS, email, WhatsApp, no voice | Credits per country (reference: about €45 per 1,000 texts to France); import STOP list |
| SalesmsgNo-code texting | Shared two-way texting inbox | From $25/month with 500 credits; redo 10DLC, port numbers |
| AircallTeam phone | Team calling, no code | From $30 per user per month, 3-seat minimum; port numbers |
Entry prices before tax and subject to change. Long messages and emoji split into several segments at most providers.
Switching from Twilio in seven steps
Order matters. Each step protects something: your numbers, your login codes, your opt-outs, your bill.
The steps
Map everything that runs through Twilio
Day 1List every use: OTP codes, reminders, campaigns, inbound calls, numbers and their type, messaging services, status callbacks, subaccounts. Pull three months of logs to see which countries you really send to.
A provider that's cheap in the US can be expensive in a country you forgot.
- Time
- half a day
- If rushed
- a flow breaks silently
Start 10DLC at the new provider on day one
US traffic10DLC campaigns don't transfer between providers. Register your brand and campaign at the destination right away: approval can take a few days or several weeks.
Get ready for what carriers check: a privacy policy that mentions SMS, a visible opt-in, and a legal name that matches your EIN exactly.
- Delay
- 1 to 4 weeks
- Cost
- $15 campaign vetting
Put every send behind one function
Week 1If your code calls Twilio in ten places, route all of it through one send function that picks the provider by country or message type. That's what makes the switch reversible.
Rewrite webhook signature checks too, since each provider signs requests its own way. For voice, Telnyx reads TwiML; others need adapting.
- Payoff
- one-line rollback
Carry your opt-outs over
Before the first sendExport everyone who replied STOP on Twilio and import them at the new provider before any marketing message goes out.
Check your opt-in language and quiet hours at the new provider as well. Carriers review them during 10DLC vetting.
- Rule
- no send to a past STOP
Lock down SMS pumping
Before cutoverBefore you send a single OTP, restrict sending to the countries where you have real customers, and set a daily spend cap. That's the lesson from a monitoring service that lost 8,000 texts to Morocco overnight.
Add a captcha or a per-IP rate limit in front of your code request form.
- Settings
- allowed countries + daily cap
Cut over one flow at a time
Weeks 2 to 4Start with a forgiving flow, such as reminders. Compare delivery rate and latency between Twilio and the new provider for a week. Then move campaigns, and login codes last.
Keep Twilio as a fallback in your send function for at least a month.
- Order
- reminders, campaigns, codes
Port numbers, then close
At the endStart the port from the new carrier and don't release anything at Twilio until it completes. A number released too early can be gone for good.
Keep a small balance and auto-recharge on Twilio until the last port is done, since a zero balance suspends the account.
- Rule
- never release before the port completes

What makes a Twilio migration go wrong
The same mistakes show up again and again in reports from developers who left Twilio. None of them is hard to avoid, but each one hurts when it hits on a Friday night.
Closing Twilio too early
A zero balance suspends the account and your numbers with it. Keep a balance and auto-recharge until every port and 10DLC approval is done.
Assuming 10DLC follows your numbers
It doesn't. Without new registration, your US texts get filtered or blocked at the new provider. Start registration on day one, not on cutover day.
Comparing base rates only
Carrier fees are the same everywhere, but number rental, failed-message fees and support plans aren't. Price your real monthly volume, segments included, before you decide.
Forgetting opt-outs
A customer who replied STOP must stay opted out after the move. Texting them again is a fast way to get flagged by carriers.
Moving login codes first
If a code doesn't arrive, your user can't log in. Codes go last, after a week of measurement on a less sensitive flow.
Leaving the new account open to every country
Fraudsters target new, loosely configured accounts. Set allowed countries, a daily cap and a spend alert before the first send.
- Every flow, number and webhook listed
- Real destination countries pulled from three months of logs
- 10DLC registration started at the new provider on day one
- All sends behind one function, with a Twilio fallback
- Webhook signature checks rewritten and verified
- STOP list imported before the first marketing send
- Allowed countries and daily spend cap set
- Cutover done flow by flow, OTP last
- Number ports completed before cancelling
- Twilio kept as backup for at least a month
Twilio alternatives: common questions
What is the cheapest alternative to Twilio for US SMS?
Among the providers we compared, Telnyx, at $0.004 per message part plus carrier fees, against $0.0083 at Twilio. Carrier fees ($0.0035 to $0.005 per text) are the same at every provider, so the saving is on the base rate and on numbers ($1.00 a month at Telnyx, $0.50 at Plivo).
Does Twilio have hidden fees?
Not hidden, but easy to miss. Every failed message costs $0.001. SMS pumping protection adds $0.025 per message. US carrier fees ($0.0035 at AT&T, $0.0045 at T-Mobile, $0.005 at Verizon) sit on top of the $0.0083 base rate, and 10DLC adds brand, vetting and monthly campaign fees. Guaranteed support starts at $250 a month or 4% of your spend. Add all of it to your own volume before you compare providers.
Is Telnyx better than Twilio?
It's cheaper in the US and its voice API reads TwiML, which makes it the easiest swap for voice apps. Twilio still has wider product coverage and better-known docs. If you mostly send US traffic and have a developer for the move, Telnyx usually comes out ahead on cost.
Do I need to re-register 10DLC when I switch providers?
Yes. Brand and campaign must be registered again at the new provider, with new fees, including the $15 campaign vetting. Telnyx offers to cover them, but only on a two-year deal with a $5,000 monthly minimum.
Can I keep my phone numbers when I leave Twilio?
Yes, by porting them, started from the new carrier. Never release a number at Twilio before the port completes, or you may lose it. Keep auto-recharge on until then, since a suspended account can complicate the port.
Why did Twilio suspend my account?
The two usual causes are a zero balance and a fraud flag, such as a spike in texts to unusual countries. Turn on auto-recharge, make sure your card accepts the recharge amount, and keep a second provider wired in as a backup.
How much does WhatsApp cost through Twilio?
Twilio adds $0.005 per message, inbound or outbound, on top of Meta's per-template fees. If you want to automate WhatsApp conversations rather than build them yourself, see our ranking of WhatsApp chatbots.
How do I stop SMS pumping on my OTP form?
Restrict allowed countries, cap daily spend, and put a captcha or a per-IP limit in front of the form. Twilio's dedicated protection costs $0.025 per message. Free or trial accounts in your app should never be able to trigger a text.
Is there a Twilio alternative that needs no developer?
Yes. For two-way texting, Salesmsg starts at $25 a month. For a team phone system, Aircall starts at $30 per user per month. Our business SMS ranking compares more no-code tools.
