Claude Asana connectorWhat Claude can do in your Asana account.
The Claude Asana connector exposes 15 tools. 11 read your workspace, 2 draft a task or a project that you review before it exists, and 2 are documented nowhere. Below: what Claude finds, what it proposes, who can block it, and where the list stops.

What the Claude Asana connector changes in a week of work
Instead of opening Asana, filtering a project and scanning a board, you ask Claude what is late, what is blocked or who owns what, and it looks it up itself. It reads tasks, projects and portfolios in the workspace your access is tied to, and brings back a short answer. When you want new work set up, it drafts it and shows you the draft first.
A status report without the digging. Before a steering meeting, get_status_overview gathers the current status updates, task summaries and flagged blockers of a project or portfolio from a keyword, and Claude turns them into a few lines you can paste.
Plans that start as drafts. Describe a launch in a paragraph and create_project_preview lays out sections, tasks, assignees and due dates for you to review before anything lands in Asana. create_task_preview does the same for a single task.
Find anything by name. search_objects looks across tasks, projects, portfolios, goals, teams, users and tags when you do not know where something lives.
What it will not do is just as useful to know. The sheet lists no tool for comments, attachments or status posts, and no dedicated goals tool: goals are only found through search. Two listed tools have no official description at all. Claude sees only what your own Asana account can see, one workspace per session. And nothing runs on its own: no tool fires when a task is completed or a due date slips. That kind of background routine is the job of an automation tool, covered by the Asana n8n integration and the Asana Make integration.
Five words to know before connecting Asana
The Claude vocabulary this page uses, in one minute.
- Connector
- A link you set up once between Claude and an account you already have, so Claude can work in that account while it answers you.
- Tool
- One named action the connector lets Claude take in Asana. Claude chooses the ones it needs on its own; the directory sheet lists every name.
- Authorization
- The Asana sign-in screen where you grant Claude the access it will use. Given once per person, and it can be withdrawn the same way.
- Approval
- The confirmation Claude waits for in the conversation before it goes ahead with something that alters your account.
- MCP
- The shared standard connectors are built on: what lets an assistant like Claude talk to an outside service such as Asana.
Connect Asana to Claude in three steps
- 01
Find Asana in the list
Open Claude's settings, go to Customize, then Connectors, and look for Asana. On a Team or Enterprise workspace, an Owner or Primary Owner has to enable it for the organization before members can each sign in.
- 02
Sign in to Asana
Click Connect on the Asana row and log in through the window Asana opens. You pick one workspace there. If the link breaks later, Disconnect and connect again; access can also be withdrawn from Asana.
- 03
Read the Asana screen
Check the authorization screen before accepting. It belongs to Asana, not to Claude, and it sets what the access covers. It may announce wider rights than Claude uses day to day; the per-action approval remains the default rule.
The 15 Asana tools, split by what they do
Asana gives Claude 15 tools: 11 that read your account, 2 that change something in it, and 2 no official source describes.
Three groups: what Claude reads, what it drafts for you to confirm, and what no official source describes. Tool names stay as Claude shows them.

What Claude reads (11)
11 toolsSearching and reading your workspace. Nothing in Asana moves.
search_tasks_preview
Looks for tasks and shows the results in an interactive view inside the conversation, filtered by assignee, due date range, start date, completion or text.
get_status_overview
Gathers an aggregated status report for one or more projects or portfolios found by keyword: project details, the latest status posts, task summaries and flagged blockers, all in one call.
get_items_for_portfolio
Lists what sits inside a portfolio, projects and goals alike, with their names and identifiers, so Claude can go one level deeper when you ask a follow-up question.
get_portfolio
Returns the full record of a single portfolio: its name, its owner and the projects attached to it. A good starting point before any question about how that group of projects is doing.
get_portfolios
Brings back the list of portfolios that belong to you in the current workspace, so you can pick the one to explore next.
get_project
Reads one project in full: description, owner, members, task counts and, if asked, its sections. Claude can then summarize where the project stands in a few plain sentences.
get_projects
Returns the projects of the workspace, optionally narrowed to one team or widened to archived ones, which gives Claude the map of your work before it digs into any single project.
get_task
Opens a single task with everything around it: description, assignee, due dates, custom fields, projects, dependencies, subtasks and comments. Claude reads the whole picture at once instead of you scrolling through it.
get_tasks
Fetches tasks for a given context, which must include at least one filter: a project, a section, a tag, a personal task list or an assignee. Without one of those, Asana does not return a list, so Claude picks the filter that matches your question.
get_user
Looks up a person by identifier or email, or you with "me", and returns their name, email and workspace memberships.
search_objects
One search across Asana's object types: tasks, projects, portfolios, goals, teams, users, tags, custom fields and AI Teammates. It is also the only way the listed tools reach goals at all.
What Claude drafts for you (2)
2 toolsTwo tools that show you a draft to review before Asana gets anything.
create_project_preview
Asks you firstTurns your description into a structured project plan with sections, tasks, assignees, due dates and priorities, and shows it to you before it becomes a real project.
create_task_preview
Asks you firstPrepares a single task as a draft and puts it in front of you rather than adding it straight away. Asana points to it when you want to confirm the details of one task first.
Undocumented (2)
2 toolsThe directory publishes these two names and nothing else. No official text says what they do, and we will not guess it from a name.
get_workspace_users
This name appears on the directory sheet and nowhere else we could read. Asana's tool reference does not carry this exact name, and no Claude page describes it, so this page says nothing about what it does.
update_task
Same silence here: the sheet lists the name, Asana's reference documents no tool spelled this way, and no other official text describes it. We would rather flag the gap than fill it from how the name sounds.
What Claude checks with you before touching Asana
By default, Claude stops and asks before each action it takes on an account for you. The prompt appears in the conversation when it matters.
On Team and Enterprise workspaces, owners decide whether members may let some actions through without being asked every time. They can also narrow what a connector may do across the organization, for instance keeping reading on and changes off, and nobody overrides that from a personal account. Claude works with the rights of the person who connected: a private project you cannot open in Asana stays out of its reach. Asana adds its own safeguard on the two drafting tools, which show their result before committing it.
Which plans the Claude Asana connector is on
None of the 819 sheets in the official directory shows plan availability. The answer connector by connector is published nowhere, and that is a real gap in the catalog.
The general rule is published. Remote connectors are open to all users on Claude, Cowork, Claude Desktop and mobile; desktop extensions install on Claude Desktop. On Team and Enterprise, an Owner or Primary Owner opens a connector for the organization before members can each sign in. For the live state of Asana, the connector's sheet in the official directory is the place to look.
Where the Asana connector stops
A connector is not an automation. Claude calls these tools while it answers you, so nothing starts when a task is completed, reassigned or overdue.
Only Asana documents this connector: no Claude help article covers it. The tool list is an observed floor, not a promise, and an administrator can open actions that no public sheet shows. Asana also warns that its tool set changes over time. The partner badge is not a security audit, and Anthropic states on every sheet that it neither picks a publisher's tools nor guarantees how they behave. For a connector whose official sources contradict each other, see the Claude gmail connector page.
