Overview

Why it helps when you pick a cause to back

Vetting a charity usually means juggling registry lookups, annual reports and a dozen browser tabs. With this connector you describe the cause and the place you care about, and Claude queries Benevity's database of verified organizations itself, then sums up the shortlist right in the chat.

A shortlist instead of an afternoon of searching. Looking for food banks in Denver or groups restoring wetlands in Oregon? Benevity Nonprofit Search narrows the database by cause, location or keyword and hands Claude the matches.

Due diligence before you write the check. Given one name, Benevity Get Nonprofit Details returns its mission, program descriptions, geographic focus and a direct link to its website.

Workplace giving that starts from vetted names. An HR lead building a matching-gift program around STEM education begins with organizations Benevity has already verified, then reads each profile.

What Claude does not do here: move money. Anthropic's tutorial says the connector supports research only, so donations happen on the nonprofit's own site. It won't sign you up for a volunteer shift either, and nothing runs on its own. Benevity has no n8n, Make or Zapier page on our site yet; the Integrations page lists the ones that exist.

Vocabulary

The vocabulary in one minute

Five terms you'll meet when you add Benevity.

Connector
The bridge you set up once between Claude and a service, so Claude can use that service while it answers you.
Tool
One named capability a connector hands to Claude. Claude decides which ones to call; the directory listing names each of them.
Authorization
The service's own sign-in screen, where you grant Claude access once per person. Anthropic's tutorial says Benevity needs no account.
Approval
The go-ahead Claude waits for in the conversation before it carries out something that would change an account for you.
MCP
The open standard every connector is built on; it is what lets an assistant talk to a service outside itself.
Connect

Add Benevity to Claude in three steps

  1. 01

    Open your connector list

In Claude's settings, go to Customize, then Connectors, and look for Benevity. On a Team or Enterprise workspace, an Owner or Primary Owner has to add it for the organization before members can use it.

  2. 02

    Start the connection

Click Connect on Benevity's row and follow the prompts on screen. If the link ever breaks, use Disconnect and add it again; that is the documented fix.

  3. 03

    Read before you accept

When a service shows an authorization screen, that screen, not Claude, sets what the access covers. Read it before you agree; access granted there can also be revoked from the service side later.

Tools

The 2 tools of the Claude Benevity connector

Benevity gives Claude 2 tools: 2 that read your account, 0 that change something in it.

Two tools, both read-only by what the sources describe. Names stay exactly as Claude shows them.

Two tools that look things up in Benevity's database and change nothing.

Benevity Get Nonprofit Details

Pulls the full profile of one organization: its mission statement, what its programs do, where it operates and the link straight to its website.

When it helps
a coworker suggests a foundation you've never heard of and you want to know what it funds before the committee meets.
Watch out
the profile covers mission, programs, focus and website; none of the sources mention financial figures in it.

Approvals

What Claude asks before it acts

By default, Claude pauses and asks for your OK before each action it takes on an account for you. With Benevity, both tools only look things up.

On Team and Enterprise workspaces, owners decide whether members may let certain actions through without being asked every time. They can also limit what a connector may do across the whole organization, keeping reads open and closing writes, and nobody overrides that from a personal account. Claude never holds more rights than the person who connected it: what that person can't reach in a service stays out of Claude's reach too.

Plans

Which plans it's available on

None of the 819 directory listings shows plan availability: the answer, connector by connector, is not published anywhere.

Anthropic's general rule: remote connectors are open to all users on Claude, Cowork, Claude Desktop and mobile, and on Team or Enterprise an Owner turns them on first. Anthropic's tutorial on Benevity says something narrower, laid out in the limits below. For the real status, open Benevity's listing in the official directory, the only place that shows it up to date.

Limits

Where this connector stops

A connector isn't an automation: Claude calls these tools while it answers you, and nothing fires on its own when a charity updates its profile.

By default its listing exposes reads only, but that is an observed floor, not a guarantee: an admin can open actions that appear on no public listing. The partner badge isn't a security audit either, whatever it suggests, and Anthropic notes on every listing that it doesn't vouch for how a publisher's tools behave. For a connector that does write into an account, compare the Claude activecampaign connector.

Two official sources disagree

Which plans can use this connector?

What this page followsBoth texts come from Anthropic but cover different ground: one sets the rule for every connector, the other talks about Benevity and carries no date. Neither is marked outdated, and neither settles it for your account: check the directory listing on your own account.

FAQ

FAQ about the Claude Benevity connector

01What can Claude do with the Benevity connector?
Claude can search verified nonprofits and read their profiles. One tool queries Benevity's database by cause, location or keyword; the other opens a single organization's profile with its mission, programs, geographic focus and a link to its website. That covers prepping a personal donation, a team fundraiser or a workplace giving program without bouncing between registries and search results for an afternoon. Each answer comes back inside the same chat.
02Can Claude donate or change anything at Benevity?
No, not with what the listing exposes today. Both tools are read tools, and Anthropic's tutorial states the connector supports research only, so donations happen on the nonprofit's own website. A read-only list is still an observed floor rather than a promise, since an admin can open actions that never show up on a public listing. If you decide to give after your research, Claude can only point you to the charity's website link.
03Does Claude ask before it uses Benevity?
Claude's default is to ask for your OK before each action it takes on an account for you. No source describes a confirmation specific to the two Benevity tools, which only look things up. On Team and Enterprise workspaces, owners decide whether members can let certain actions through without a prompt, and they can restrict the connector for the whole organization. In practice, a plain search touches no account of yours.
04Which plans is the Benevity connector available on?
No source publishes plan availability for an individual connector. Anthropic's general rule opens remote connectors to all users of Claude, Cowork, Claude Desktop and mobile, with an Owner enabling them on Team and Enterprise. Anthropic's undated tutorial for this connector says something narrower; both texts are set side by side, with their dates, in the limits section. Neither text settles it for you, so check the directory listing on your own account, which is the one that shows the current status.
05Does Claude see my personal data at Benevity?
No, nothing is tied to a personal account. Anthropic's tutorial says no Benevity account and no authentication are required, so Claude queries the shared database of verified nonprofits and sees no giving history, employee profile or company program. More broadly, Claude never has more rights than the person who added the connector. Your search itself does go through your conversation with Claude, though. If your company runs its own giving program, that stays outside what this connector reaches.
06How many nonprofits are in Benevity's database?
The official sources disagree. The Claude directory listing mentions more than 2.3 million verified nonprofits, while Anthropic's tutorial describes a database of 2.5M+ organizations. Neither says when it counted, so we don't pick one. The tutorial also states the database is worldwide and that Claude reads it in real time, with profiles updated regularly. Treat the scale as the useful part, not the exact figure. Both figures come from official pages, read on the same day.
07Claude or an automation tool for Benevity?
They serve different jobs. The Claude connector is for asking a question and getting an answer in the moment, such as a shortlist of charities to review before a meeting. An automation tool runs something without you, on an event or a schedule. The connector never starts on its own, and Benevity has no automation page on our site for now. Pick the one that matches how you work. Nothing stops you from using both.
