Overview

What changes for a sales team doing account research

Account research usually means jumping between a list, Clay's tables and a dozen tabs. With the connector, you describe the people or the company you are after, and Claude runs the lookup through Clay and brings the results back into the conversation, where you can refine them in plain words.

Map a buying committee. Before a first call with a software vendor, find-and-enrich-contacts-at-company searches that company's people by role, title or department, so you see who sits in finance or IT.

Complete a named shortlist. A partner hands you five names from an event. find-and-enrich-list-of-contacts looks up those exact people at their companies and enriches what it finds.

Deepen a search you already ran. Once a search exists, add-contact-data-points or add-company-data-points appends extra data points to every row in it, and get-existing-search brings that search back later by its ID.

Now what the connector does not do. Clay's documentation gives one sentence per tool and no more: it does not say what a lookup costs in credits, which data points exist, or how results are stored. get-credits-available shows the balance, not the price of the next call. Nothing runs on its own either. For list building that fires on a schedule or an event, an automation tool is the right job, and the Clay Make integration page covers that side.

Vocabulary

The vocabulary in one minute

Five words you will meet while plugging Clay into Claude.

Connector
The link you set up once between Claude and an account you already own, so Claude can work in it while answering you.
Tool
One named action a connector opens to Claude. Claude picks the ones it needs by itself; the directory lists each by name.
Authorization
The sign-in screen of the service itself, where you hand Claude its access. Granted once per person, and you can take it back.
Approval
The confirmation Claude waits for before it goes through with something that changes your account, shown right in the chat.
MCP
The shared standard connectors are built on: it is what lets an assistant such as Claude talk to an outside service.
Connect

Plug Clay into Claude in three steps

  1. 01

    Find Clay in Claude

In Claude's settings, open Customize, then Connectors, and look for Clay in the list. On a Team or Enterprise workspace, an Owner or Primary Owner has to switch the connector on first so each member can sign in.

  2. 02

    Start the connection

Click Connect on its row, then sign in to Clay in the window that Clay opens itself. If the link ever breaks later on, use Disconnect and then plug it back in.

  3. 03

    Read the authorization screen

Read the authorization screen before you accept. It belongs to Clay, not to Claude, and it is what decides what the access covers. You can also withdraw that access later from your Clay account.

Tools

The 7 tools, sorted by what they do

Clay gives Claude 7 tools: 5 that read your account, 2 that change something in it.

Two groups: what Claude looks up and what it adds to a Clay search. Tool names stay exactly as Claude shows them.

What Claude reads (5)

5 tools

Five tools that search, enrich and report without altering an existing search.

find-and-enrich-contacts-at-company

Searches the people working at one company, filtered by role, title or department, and enriches the contacts it returns so you get more than a name.

When it helps
you want every finance leader at a target account before an outbound sequence.
Watch out
Clay's documentation does not say how many credits one of these lookups uses.

Sourcenotion.so · September 30, 2026 ↗

find-and-enrich-list-of-contacts

Looks up specific people you already know by name, each at their own company, and enriches those records one by one rather than scanning a whole organization.

When it helps
a partner passes on a handful of names met at a trade fair and you want their details side by side.
Watch out
the source gives a single sentence here; accepted inputs beyond name and company are not described.

Sourcenotion.so · September 30, 2026 ↗

find-and-enrich-company

Finds a single company from its domain or its LinkedIn URL and enriches that account, which gives Claude a factual base before it drafts anything.

When it helps
a prospect books a demo and you want a quick profile of the account first.
Watch out
it handles one company per call according to Clay, not a batch of domains.

Sourcenotion.so · September 30, 2026 ↗

get-credits-available

Reports how many credits remain in your Clay workspace, so you know where you stand before launching a heavy round of research.

When it helps
at the start of the month, you check the balance before asking for a large account map.
Watch out
it shows the balance only; no source publishes the credit cost of each tool.

What Claude changes (2)

2 tools

Two tools that add data to a search in your workspace. No source spells out their confirmation, so the general rule below applies.

add-contact-data-points

Approval: see the rule

Adds data points to every contact inside a search that already exists, so the whole list gets the same extra fields in one go.

What Claude asks for
no source describes a confirmation specific to this tool, so the general approvals rule applies.
When it helps
a list of forty prospects needs one more attribute before you segment it.

Sourcenotion.so · September 30, 2026 ↗

add-company-data-points

Approval: see the rule

Extends every company held in an existing search with extra data points, covering the whole list at once rather than one by one.

What Claude asks for
nothing official describes a confirmation step for it, so the general approvals rule covers it.
When it helps
a territory plan needs the same firmographic detail on every account.

Approvals

What Claude asks before it acts

By default, Claude stops and asks you before any action it takes on an account on your behalf. The request shows up in the conversation, at the moment it matters.

On a Team or Enterprise workspace, owners decide whether a member may let some actions through without being asked every time. They can also limit what a connector may do for the whole organization, for instance keeping reading open and closing writing. That setting applies to everyone and nobody gets around it from their own account. Finally, Claude works with your rights and nothing beyond: a Clay workspace you cannot reach yourself stays out of its reach too.

Plans

Which plans include it

None of the 819 sheets in the official directory shows plan availability. The answer per connector is published nowhere, and that is a real hole in the catalog rather than a gap in our reading.

The general rule is public: remote connectors are open to all users on Claude, Cowork, Claude Desktop and mobile. On Team and Enterprise, an Owner or Primary Owner opens a connector for the organization before members can each sign in. For the live state of this one, go to Clay's sheet in the official directory, the only place that shows it.

Limits

Where the Claude Clay connector stops

A connector is not an automation. Claude calls these tools while it answers you: nothing starts when a new lead lands or a search finishes.

This connector is documented only by its publisher: neither Claude's help center nor Anthropic's developer docs cover it, so every fact here comes from the directory sheet and Clay's own documentation page. The tool list is an observed floor, not a promise, since an administrator can open actions no public sheet shows. The partner badge is not a security audit, and Anthropic states on every sheet that it does not control which tools a publisher exposes. The Integrations hub gathers the other families if you need automation instead.

FAQ

Claude Clay connector: frequent questions

01What can Claude do with the Clay connector?
Claude can research people and companies through Clay without you leaving the conversation. Its seven tools search contacts at a company by role, title or department, look up and enrich named contacts, find and enrich a single company from its domain or LinkedIn URL, report your credit balance, reopen an earlier search by ID, and add data points to all contacts or all companies in an existing search. All seven are described, briefly, in Clay's own documentation.
02Can Claude change data in my Clay workspace?
Yes, two of the seven tools add something. One appends data points to every contact of an existing search, the other does the same for every company in it. They work on the whole list at once and need a search that already exists. The other five tools search, enrich lookups, report credits or reopen a search, and none of them is described as altering what you already have in Clay.
03Does Claude ask before it acts in Clay?
By default, yes: Claude asks for a confirmation before any action it takes on an account on your behalf. No source describes a confirmation specific to a Clay tool, so that default rule is what covers the two tools that add data points. On a Team or Enterprise workspace, owners decide whether members can let some actions pass without a prompt, and they can close writing for the whole organization.
04Which plans is it available on?
No official source publishes plan availability connector by connector, and no directory sheet shows it. The general rule says remote connectors are open to all users on Claude, Cowork, Claude Desktop and mobile, with an Owner or Primary Owner enabling them first on Team and Enterprise. Clay's documentation names no plan for this connector. The directory sheet is still the only place that shows the current state for your own account.
05Does Claude see my whole Clay workspace?
No, Claude works with the rights of the person who connected and nothing more. What it reaches is also shaped by its seven tools: lookups on people and companies, the credit balance, and searches you can point it to by ID. The authorization screen shown when you connect belongs to Clay, and it is that screen, not Claude, that decides what the access covers. A search owned by someone else only reaches Claude if you can open it yourself.
06How many Clay credits does a request use?
No official source says. Clay's documentation includes a tool that reports how many credits your workspace has left, but it publishes no cost per search, per enrichment or per data point added. The practical approach is to ask Claude for the balance before a large research request and again afterwards, so you can see what a given kind of request actually consumed in your own workspace, and plan the next ones accordingly.
07Should I use Claude or an automation tool with Clay?
They do different jobs, so choose by use. Claude works inside a conversation: you describe the people or accounts you want, it researches and enriches, and nothing happens once you stop asking. It does not react on its own when a new lead appears in your CRM or when a search completes. For list building that runs on a schedule or on an event, an automation tool fits. For on-demand research, the connector does.
