Overview

What changes when Claude can read your research

Your interviews, survey answers and tagged highlights live in Dovetail. With the connector, you no longer dig through projects to back up a decision. You ask Claude a question, it searches the workspace, opens the project data or highlights that matter, and answers with what your customers actually said.

Find where a topic came up. Before a pricing workshop, search_workspace looks across all the content of your workspace, and get_dovetail_projects lists the projects so Claude knows which study to open.

Go back to the raw material. list_project_data shows the entries of one project, such as interview notes or transcripts; get_project_data fetches one entry by its ID and get_data_content returns its full content as text Claude can read and quote.

Reuse what your team already tagged. get_project_highlights brings back the highlights of a project, the passages researchers already marked as important.

What it will not do: create a project, add a tag or post a comment. Dovetail's developer reference lists such tools, but the directory sheet does not expose them, so by default this connector only reads. Three insight tools on the sheet are not described anywhere. And nothing runs on its own; Claude calls these tools while it answers. For a connector that writes to a team tool, see the Claude asana connector page.

Vocabulary

The vocabulary in one minute

Five words you will meet while connecting Dovetail.

Connector
The link you set up once between Claude and an account you already own, so Claude can work in it while it answers you.
Tool
One named thing a connector lets Claude do. Claude picks the ones it needs on its own; the directory sheet lists them by name.
Authorization
Dovetail's own sign-in screen, where you hand Claude the access it will use. Granted once per person, and it can be taken back.
Directory
The official catalogue where each connector has a sheet showing its publisher, its purpose and the tools it exposes.
MCP
The shared standard connectors are built on, which is what lets an assistant like Claude talk to an outside service such as Dovetail.
Connect

Connect Dovetail to Claude in three steps

  1. 01

Find Dovetail in the connector list

Open Claude's settings, then Customize and Connectors, and look for Dovetail. On a Team or Enterprise workspace, an Owner or Primary Owner enables the connector first, after which each member can sign in.

  2. 02

    Start the connection

Click Connect on its row, then sign in to Dovetail in the browser window the service opens. If the link stops working later, Disconnect and connect again.

  3. 03

    Approve the access screen

Read Dovetail's screen before you authorize. It is the service's screen, not Claude's, and it sets what the access covers. You can withdraw that access later from the Dovetail side as well.

What Claude reads (6)

6 tools

Six tools that search and open your research without changing it.

get_project_highlights

Brings back the highlights of one project, the passages your researchers marked while analysing interviews or feedback.

When it helps
you need the five strongest moments from last month's onboarding study for a slide.
Watch out
it only returns what someone already highlighted; untagged material stays in the raw data.

Sourcedevelopers.dovetail.com · September 24, 2026 ↗

get_data_content

Returns the complete content of one data entry as text, so Claude reads the whole interview or note rather than a title.

When it helps
you want Claude to summarize a single customer call and quote the part about billing.
Watch out
long entries mean long answers; ask for the part you need.

Sourcedevelopers.dovetail.com · September 24, 2026 ↗

get_project_data

Fetches a specific entry of a project by its ID, the step before opening its content.

When it helps
Claude found a promising interview in a list and needs its details before going further.
Watch out
it works from an ID, so it usually follows a list or a search.

Sourcedevelopers.dovetail.com · September 24, 2026 ↗

list_project_data

Lists every data entry in one project, giving Claude the inventory of interviews, notes or files it can dig into.

When it helps
you want to know how many interviews the churn study holds before asking for patterns.
Watch out
a list gives names, not content; opening an entry is a separate step.

Sourcedevelopers.dovetail.com · September 24, 2026 ↗

get_dovetail_projects

Lists all the projects in your Dovetail workspace, so Claude can point you to the right study.

When it helps
a new team member asks what research exists on the checkout flow.
Watch out
Claude only sees the projects your own account can open.

Sourcedevelopers.dovetail.com · September 24, 2026 ↗

search_workspace

Searches across all the content of your workspace in one go, the usual starting point when you do not know which project holds the answer.

When it helps
you remember a customer mentioning "offline mode" but not where.
Watch out
results depend on your access; content you cannot see stays out of the results.

Undocumented (3)

3 tools

The directory publishes these names and nothing else. Dovetail's tool reference does not list them, and we will not guess from a name.

get_project_insight

No official source describes this tool. The directory publishes its name, and Dovetail's developer reference, updated in September 2026, does not list it.

Watch out
if Claude calls it, the general approval rule in the section below applies, and this page makes no claim about its result.

get_insight_content

Its name appears on the directory sheet and nowhere in the publisher's tool reference. Nothing official says what it covers, and this page will not guess from the name.

Watch out
treat it like any undescribed tool; the default approval rule is what covers it.

list_project_insights

Listed by the directory, absent from Dovetail's own table of tools: no source documents its effect, and the publisher has not explained why it is on the sheet.

Watch out
the general approval rule below is the only thing that applies to it with certainty.
Approvals

What Claude asks before it acts

By default, Claude stops and asks before any action it takes on your behalf. The six documented tools only read, so there is no change to confirm.

On a Team or Enterprise workspace, owners decide whether members can let some actions through without being asked each time, and they can limit what a connector may do for the whole organization. That setting applies to everyone; nobody overrides it from their own account. Claude also works with your Dovetail access and nothing more: a project you cannot open stays closed to it. Each person signs in with their own Dovetail account.

Plans

Which plans include it

None of the 819 sheets in the official directory shows availability by plan. That answer, connector by connector, is not published anywhere; it is a real gap in the catalogue.

The general rule is published: remote connectors are open to all users on Claude, Cowork, Claude Desktop and mobile. On Team and Enterprise, an Owner or Primary Owner enables a connector for the organization before members connect. The Dovetail sheet in the official directory shows the current status. What is specific to this connector comes from Dovetail alone.

Limits

Where this connector stops

A connector is not an automation. Claude calls these tools while it answers you; nothing happens on its own when new interviews land in a project.

By default, the sheet only exposes reading. That is an observed floor, not a guarantee: an administrator can open actions that no public sheet shows. The partner badge is not a security audit, and Anthropic writes on every sheet that it does not choose a publisher's tools or guarantee how they behave. Everything specific here comes from Dovetail, since Anthropic has no page on this connector. Other connector pages sit in the Integrations hub.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about the Claude Dovetail connector

01What can Claude do with the Dovetail connector?
Claude can search your Dovetail research and answer from it. Six of its nine tools are documented: they search the whole workspace, list your projects, list and open the data entries of a project, return an entry's full content as text, and bring back a project's highlights. Three more tools about insights are on the directory sheet with no description. In practice, you ask a question about your customers and Claude looks for the evidence your team already collected.
02Can Claude create or change anything in Dovetail?
Not with the tools the directory exposes. All six described tools read, and none of them creates a project, adds a tag or posts a comment. Dovetail's developer reference does list tools of that kind, but they are not on the Claude directory sheet. That read-only picture is a floor observed on the public sheet, not a promise, since an administrator can open more on a workspace. If you need those actions, they still happen in Dovetail itself.
03Does Claude ask before it opens my research?
By default, Claude asks for confirmation before any action it takes on your behalf, but the documented tools only read, so there is no change to confirm. The three undescribed insight tools fall under the same general rule. On a Team or Enterprise workspace, owners decide whether members may let some actions through without a prompt, and they can restrict the connector for everyone in the organization. Each person also signs in with their own account, so access follows the individual.
04Which Claude plans include the Dovetail connector?
No official source publishes plan availability connector by connector, and none of the 819 directory sheets shows it. The published rule says remote connectors are open to all users on Claude, Cowork, Claude Desktop and mobile. On Team and Enterprise, an Owner or Primary Owner enables a connector first, then members sign in one by one. The Dovetail sheet in the official directory is where to check your status. That status can change from one update of the catalogue to the next.
05Does Claude see every project in our Dovetail workspace?
Claude sees what your own Dovetail account can see, nothing more. It can search the workspace, list projects and open their data and highlights within your access. A project restricted to another team stays out of reach, even if you mention it by name. Colleagues with wider access may therefore get fuller answers to the same question, because Claude works through each person's own sign-in. Nothing leaves those limits because you asked through Claude.
06What are the insight tools in the Dovetail connector?
Nobody official says. The directory sheet lists get_project_insight, get_insight_content and list_project_insights, but Dovetail's developer reference, updated in September 2026, does not include them, and no other source describes them. This page therefore does not say what they return or whether they change anything. If Claude uses one, the general approval rule applies, as for any tool. Should Dovetail document them later, the answer here will change with the source. Until then, rely on the six documented tools.
07Should I use Claude or an automation tool with Dovetail?
They do different jobs, so it depends on the use. Claude with this connector suits questions you ask in the moment: what did customers say about onboarding, show me the strongest highlights, which study covers pricing. An automation tool runs a fixed sequence on its own when something happens, such as a new interview arriving. This connector never starts anything by itself, so scheduled reports belong elsewhere. The two can sit side by side without overlapping.
