Overview

Why plug Goodnotes into Claude

You work an idea through with Claude, then copy the result by hand into a notebook. With this connector, the answer goes straight to Goodnotes as a file you keep editing there: formatted text, a structured diagram or a simple drawing. It is a one-way bridge, from the conversation to the page, and nothing travels back.

Meeting notes you can annotate. Ask Claude to tidy a messy summary, then create_markdown_text_document turns it into a formatted text document you open in Goodnotes and write over with your pen.

A process drawn, not described. An onboarding checklist becomes a flowchart, a research topic becomes a mind map, a project becomes a timeline. generate_mermaid_diagram builds the diagram and Goodnotes holds it as an editable file.

A quick visual for study or planning. draw_svg_image sketches simple vector art (an icon, a labeled schema, a rough layout) that you can then refine by hand.

Now the part the directory listing leaves out. Goodnotes says the connector is built for creation, not retrieval: Claude cannot read, search, edit or delete the notes already in your library. Diagrams stop at three formats, and the drawings are plain vector art, not generated pictures. Nothing runs on its own either: a file only appears when you ask for it in a conversation. No n8n, Make or Zapier page for Goodnotes exists on the site yet; the Integrations hub lists the apps that have one.

Vocabulary

Four words to know before you start

The vocabulary you will meet once Goodnotes sits next to Claude.

Connector
The link you set up once between Claude and a service you use, so Claude can work with it while it answers you.
Tool
One named job a connector hands to Claude. Claude picks the ones it needs on its own, and the directory lists them by name.
Approval
The confirmation Claude waits for before it goes ahead with an action on your behalf, shown right in the conversation.
MCP
The shared standard connectors are built on: it is what lets an assistant like Claude talk to an outside service.
Connect

Connect Goodnotes to Claude in three steps

  1. 01

    Find Goodnotes in the list

Open Claude's settings, go to Customize, then Connectors, and look for Goodnotes. On a Team or Enterprise workspace, an Owner or Primary Owner has to enable it first before members can add it.

  2. 02

    Start the connection

Click Connect on its row. Most services open their own sign-in window at this point; Goodnotes states that no authentication is required to connect for now, so you may not see one.

  3. 03

    Check the screen, then test

If an authorization screen does show up, read it before you accept: it belongs to the service, not to Claude. Then ask for a short document in a new chat. If the link breaks later, use Disconnect and connect again.

Tools

The 3 Goodnotes tools, and what each one produces

Goodnotes gives Claude 3 tools: 0 that read your account, 3 that change something in it.

All three create new content. None of them opens what you already have in Goodnotes. Tool names stay in English, exactly as Claude shows them.

What Claude creates (3)

3 tools

Three tools that add a new file. No source describes a confirmation specific to any of them, so the general approval rule below applies.

draw_svg_image

Approval: see the rule

Produces a simple vector drawing from the conversation: an icon, a logo idea or a labeled schema. You get a clean line illustration that you keep sketching on in Goodnotes.

What Claude asks for
no source documents a confirmation for this tool; the general approval rule further down covers it.
When it helps
a teacher wants a labeled solar system on a dotted page for tomorrow's class handout.
Watch out
Goodnotes describes the output as simple vector art, so do not expect a photo-like image.

generate_mermaid_diagram

Approval: see the rule

Turns a process, a set of themes or a sequence of dates into a structured diagram that opens in Goodnotes as an editable file. Three shapes are on offer: flowchart, mind map, timeline.

What Claude asks for
nothing tool-specific is documented here, so rely on the default rule in the approvals section.
When it helps
an ops lead needs the new-hire process as a flowchart to mark up during a review.

create_markdown_text_document

Approval: see the rule

Takes text written in the chat and lays it out as a formatted rich text document, ready to open and annotate in Goodnotes.

What Claude asks for
the sources stay silent on a confirmation step for this one; the general approval rule is what applies.
When it helps
you just summarised a supplier call with Claude and want the recap in the same notebook as your handwritten notes.

Approvals

What Claude asks before it creates a file

By default, Claude stops and asks you before each action it carries out on a service in your place. The request shows up in the chat at the moment it matters.

On Team and Enterprise, workspace owners decide whether a member can let some actions through without being asked every time. They can also limit what a connector may do for the whole organization, and that setting binds everyone. Claude only works with the access of the person who connected it, nothing more. With Goodnotes that access is narrow by design: the publisher says the connector only creates files and never opens your existing notes, so the approval question bears on what gets added, not on what gets read.

Plans

Which plans include it

None of the 819 sheets in the official directory shows availability by plan. That answer, connector by connector, is published nowhere.

The general rule is public: remote connectors are open to every user on Claude, Cowork, Claude Desktop and mobile, while desktop extensions install on Claude Desktop. On Team and Enterprise, an Owner or Primary Owner enables a connector before members can use it. For the current status, open the Goodnotes sheet in the official directory: it is the only place that shows it.

Limits

Where the Goodnotes connector stops

A connector is not an automation. Claude calls these tools while it answers you, and nothing fires by itself when a notebook changes.

Everything known about this connector comes from Goodnotes itself: neither Claude's help center nor Anthropic's developer docs have a page on it. The verification badge in the directory is not a security audit, and Anthropic writes on every sheet that it does not control which tools a publisher exposes. Connect what comes from a publisher you trust. Goodnotes also notes that no authentication is required to connect at this stage, and that a managed workspace needs its admin to have enabled connectors first.

FAQ

Claude Goodnotes connector: common questions

01What can Claude do with the Goodnotes connector?
Claude can turn something from your conversation into a new Goodnotes file. Its three tools cover a formatted text document built from Markdown, a diagram in one of three shapes (flowchart, mind map or timeline) and a simple vector drawing. You then open that file in Goodnotes to annotate and refine it. The connector is a one-way route: it sends content from the chat to the page and does not pull anything back from your notebooks.
02Can Claude edit or delete my existing Goodnotes notes?
No. Goodnotes describes the connector as designed for creation, not retrieval: it does not read, search, edit or delete the notes already in your library. All three tools create new content from the current conversation. If you want to change a page you made last week, you still do it by hand in the Goodnotes app, not through Claude. Each new file Claude produces is yours to edit once it lands there.
03Does Claude ask before creating a Goodnotes file?
By default, Claude asks for confirmation before each action it takes on a service on your behalf, and the request appears in the conversation. No source documents a confirmation step specific to any of the three Goodnotes tools, so this default rule is what covers them. On Team and Enterprise workspaces, owners decide whether members can let some actions through without a prompt, and they can restrict what a connector is allowed to do for everyone.
04Which Claude plans is the Goodnotes connector available on?
No official source publishes plan availability connector by connector, and none of the 819 directory sheets shows it. The published general rule says remote connectors are open to all users on Claude, Cowork, Claude Desktop and mobile. On Team and Enterprise, an Owner or Primary Owner must enable the connector for the organization first. For the up-to-date status, open the Goodnotes sheet in the official directory from your own account.
05Can Claude see my Goodnotes notes?
No. According to Goodnotes, the connector does not read or search your existing notes at all, so your library stays out of the conversation. Goodnotes also states that no authentication is required to connect at this time. What Claude handles is the content of the current chat, which the three tools turn into new files. Your notebooks, folders and their pages never pass through this connector, neither to be read nor to be changed.
06Why does the Edit in Goodnotes button not open the app?
Goodnotes says the handoff that opens a generated file in the app works best on iOS and macOS today, while Android and Windows support is still rolling out. If previews do not load, Goodnotes suggests temporarily turning off a VPN, proxy, firewall or content blocker before trying again. In a managed workspace, also check that your admin has enabled connectors, which is the very first point in Goodnotes' own troubleshooting.
07Claude or an automation tool for Goodnotes?
They do different jobs. The Claude connector works inside a conversation: you ask, and Claude creates a document, diagram or drawing at that moment. It never runs in the background or reacts to an event. An automation tool runs scenarios on its own once you set them up. The site has no n8n, Make or Zapier page for Goodnotes yet, so for that kind of unattended flow you would have to check what each platform offers for this app.
