Overview

What changes for your investment research

Instead of opening Morningstar, hunting for the right fund and copying figures into a note, you ask Claude. It works out which securities you mean, fetches the relevant data, research or articles, and answers inside the conversation, within whatever your Morningstar license covers.

Read the analyst view. morningstar-analyst-research-tool returns the relevant parts of Morningstar's analyst and quantitative reports, which look forward on a stock or fund.

Put numbers on it. morningstar-data-tool retrieves fund, ETF and stock data, while morningstar-screener-tool lists investments that match criteria you can combine with logical operators.

Look inside a fund. morningstar-fund-holdings-tool returns the top positions of one or more funds with their weights, and morningstar-articles-tool adds editorial context. Behind the scenes, morningstar-id-lookup-tool maps names and tickers to Morningstar identifiers.

What Claude won't do here: all six tools on the sheet consult, none places an order or edits a portfolio. It doesn't watch anything continuously either, every lookup starts with your question. An alert that runs by itself is a job for an automation tool, a different line of work, collected on the Integrations hub.

Vocabulary

Read these once and the rest of the page is easy going.

Connector
The link you set up one time between Claude and an account you already hold, so Claude can work with it while it replies.
Tool
A single named capability the connector gives Claude. Claude decides which to call, and the directory sheet lists each by name.
Authorization
Morningstar's own sign-in screen, where you hand Claude the access it will use. Granted once per person, and you can pull it back.
Approval
The confirmation Claude waits for before completing an action that changes your account, shown in the chat when it matters.
MCP
The common standard connectors run on. It's what lets an assistant like Claude talk to an outside service such as Morningstar.
Connect

Set up the Claude Morningstar connector in three steps

  1. 01

    Find Morningstar

In Claude's settings, open Customize then Connectors and locate Morningstar in the list. On a Team or Enterprise workspace, an Owner or Primary Owner needs to enable it before each member can connect.

  2. 02

    Start the connection

Click Connect on its row, then sign in with your Morningstar credentials in the window Morningstar opens itself. If the link breaks later, use Disconnect and reconnect.

  3. 03

    Review the authorization

Read Morningstar's screen before you accept: the service, not Claude, sets what the access covers. You can take that access back the same way you gave it, from the service's own account settings.

morningstar-id-lookup-tool

Acts as the detection layer: it spots the investments and data points mentioned in your request and maps them to Morningstar's internal IDs, which the other tools then reuse.

When it helps
you type a half-remembered ticker and Claude has to work out which fund you mean.
Watch out
the data tool only works with the IDs this step hands it.

morningstar-data-tool

Fetches Morningstar's AI-ready data on mutual funds, ETFs and stocks worldwide, one data point at a time.

When it helps
you want a data point's history for a fund, within the timeframes Morningstar covers for it.
Watch out
history depends on the data point, and the tool needs IDs from the lookup step.

morningstar-analyst-research-tool

Returns the relevant passages from Morningstar's analyst and quantitative reports, with their forward-looking take on a stock or a fund.

When it helps

only the latest published reports are available, with no research history.

morningstar-articles-tool

Draws on articles, news and commentary published on Morningstar.com and other Morningstar products to explain a market trend.

When it helps

Watch out
the editorial content it reaches starts in 2022.

Sourcedeveloper.morningstar.com · July 14, 2026 ↗

morningstar-screener-tool

Builds a list of investments that match the criteria you give, which can be combined with AND, OR and NOT logic.

When it helps
you want to cut a long fund list down to those that meet several criteria at once.

Sourcedeveloper.morningstar.com · July 14, 2026 ↗

morningstar-fund-holdings-tool

Returns the largest positions for a list of mutual funds or ETFs, each with the security name and its weight in the portfolio.

When it helps
you check whether two ETFs you hold together hold the same securities.
Watch out
you pick between 10 and 100 holdings per fund, and only some fund types are covered.

Approvals

What Claude checks with you first

By default, Claude stops and asks before every action it takes on an account for you. All six Morningstar tools consult data.

No source describes a Morningstar-specific confirmation, so the default rule applies. On Team and Enterprise, workspace owners decide whether members may let some actions through without being asked again. They can also restrict a connector for the whole organization. And Claude never goes past your rights: whatever your Morningstar license doesn't open stays invisible to it, however the question is phrased.

Plans

Which plans include it

None of the 819 sheets in the official directory shows plan availability. For a given connector, that information simply isn't published.

The general rule is published: remote connectors are open to all users on Claude, Cowork, Claude Desktop and mobile. On Team and Enterprise, an Owner or Primary Owner enables the connector for the organization. For Morningstar's current status, its sheet in the official directory is the reference to check from your own account.

Limits

Where the Morningstar connector stops

A connector isn't an automation. Claude calls these tools while it answers you, and nothing fires when an analyst publishes a new note.

Only the publisher documents this connector: neither Claude's help center nor Anthropic's docs cover it. Its six tools consult, but a read-only sheet is an observed floor, not a guarantee. The directory badge isn't a security audit, and Anthropic doesn't vouch for how a publisher's tools behave. Morningstar's documentation also mentions tools that aren't on the directory sheet: this page leaves them out. Don't mix it up with Morningstar Credit Analytics, a separate connector in the directory.

FAQ

Claude Morningstar connector: common questions

01What can Claude do with the Morningstar connector?
Claude can consult Morningstar research and investment data without leaving the chat. Its six tools identify the securities you mention, retrieve fund, ETF and stock data, read analyst reports, draw on editorial articles, screen investments against your criteria, and list a fund's top holdings with their weights. Everything stays within what your Morningstar license covers, and the publisher requires a licensed account before you can connect at all. Tickers and names are first mapped to Morningstar IDs.
02Can Claude place trades or change a portfolio through Morningstar?
Not with the tools on today's sheet. All six consult data, research or articles, and Morningstar's documentation describes none of them as a write. So Claude places no orders and edits no portfolio through this connector. Treat that as an observation about the published list rather than a guarantee: a read-only sheet is an observed floor, and an admin can enable actions that never show up on any public page.
03Does Claude ask before it queries Morningstar?
No source describes a confirmation specific to Morningstar's tools, so Claude's general rule applies. By default, Claude stops and asks before each action it takes on an account on your behalf. On a Team or Enterprise workspace, owners decide whether members can let certain actions through without being asked each time, and they can restrict the connector for the whole organization if they prefer. No Morningstar-specific exception is documented anywhere.
04Which Claude plans support the Morningstar connector?
No official source publishes plan availability connector by connector, and none of the 819 directory sheets shows it. The general rule: remote connectors are open to all users on Claude, Cowork, Claude Desktop and mobile, with an Owner or Primary Owner enabling them on Team and Enterprise. Check Morningstar's directory sheet for the current status. On the publisher's side, a Morningstar license is still required, and that requirement comes from Morningstar, not from Claude.
05Does Claude see all of Morningstar's data?
No, Claude works with your rights and nothing more. It goes through your Morningstar connection, and the publisher states that the securities and data points you target must be part of your license. Data outside that license stays out of reach, even if you ask for it by name. On a Team or Enterprise workspace, an owner can also restrict what the connector is allowed to do for every member.
06Why can't Claude find an older Morningstar report?
Because the research tool only keeps the latest published reports and notes for an investment, with no history. New reports usually arrive within 24 hours of publication. Articles follow similar logic: the editorial content starts in 2022, nothing earlier, per Morningstar's own documentation. If you need to trace an analyst's view across several years or reread older market commentary, you'll have to go through a channel other than this connector.
07Claude or an automation tool for Morningstar?
They do different jobs. Claude answers in a conversation: you ask about a fund or a stock, it fetches data and research, and nothing runs outside the conversation. An automation tool runs a task in the background, for instance on a schedule. One answers a question asked in the moment, the other runs a planned task: they are not two versions of the same service, and neither replaces the other.
