Overview

What changes for your data work

MotherDuck is a cloud data warehouse built on DuckDB. With this connector you ask a question in plain English and Claude finds the tables, writes the SQL (the query language databases speak) and can save the result as a Dive, an interactive visualization it hands back as a link.

Find your way around the catalog. When you don't know the exact table names, search_catalog runs a fuzzy search across databases, schemas, tables and columns, then list_columns spells out the structure of the one that matters.

Answer a numbers question. query runs read-only SQL: any operation that would modify data or schema gets rejected. When a table really needs reshaping, query_rw handles the statements that change things.

Ship a visualization. Claude loads the rules with get_dive_guide, saves a Dive with save_dive and hands back a clickable link. share_dive_data then opens the underlying data to your organization.

What Claude won't do: it never starts anything on its own, every query begins in your conversation. Query results get truncated past a cap MotherDuck sets. And the directory sheet doesn't include the other tool families the publisher documents. A scheduled data load is a job for an automation tool, a different line of work, listed on the Integrations hub.

Vocabulary

Five words before you start

Quick definitions so the tool list makes sense.

Connector
The link you set up one time between Claude and an account you already have, so Claude can use it while it answers you.
Tool
A single named capability a connector gives Claude. Claude picks which ones to call, and the directory sheet lists each by name.
Authorization
MotherDuck's own sign-in screen, where you give Claude the access it will use afterwards. Granted once per person, and revocable.
Approval
The confirmation Claude waits for before it completes an action that changes your account, shown in the chat right when it matters.
MCP
The open standard connectors are built on. It's what lets an assistant like Claude talk to an outside service such as MotherDuck.
Connect

Set up the Claude MotherDuck connector in three steps

  1. 01

    Find MotherDuck

In Claude's settings, open Customize then Connectors and locate MotherDuck. On a Team or Enterprise workspace, an Owner or Primary Owner first has to enable the connector so members can sign in individually.

  2. 02

    Start the connection

Click Connect on its row, then log in to MotherDuck in the window the service opens itself. If the link breaks one day, use Disconnect and connect again.

  3. 03

    Review the authorization

Read MotherDuck's screen before you accept. The service, not Claude, decides what the access covers. You can also take that access back later from your MotherDuck account itself.

Tools

All 15 MotherDuck tools, sorted by what they do

MotherDuck gives Claude 15 tools: 10 that read your account, 5 that change something in it.

Two groups: what Claude reads and what it changes. Names stay exactly as Claude shows them.

What Claude reads (10)

10 tools

Ten tools that explore your catalog, run read-only queries or open your Dives.

list_databases

Shows every database your MotherDuck account can reach, both the ones you own and attached shares, with name and type.

When it helps
you just joined a team account and want to know what data exists before your first question.

Sourcemotherduck.com · October 1, 2026 ↗

list_shares

Displays the database shares other users have sent you, each with a name and a URL. That URL is what lets Claude attach the share as a database through the query tool.

When it helps
someone shared a database with you and you want to start querying it from the conversation.

Sourcemotherduck.com · October 1, 2026 ↗

list_tables

Enumerates the tables and views in one MotherDuck database, along with any comments people left on them. Nothing is changed: it only shows what the database holds.

When it helps
you've found the right database and now want to see which tables and views it contains before asking anything.

Sourcemotherduck.com · October 1, 2026 ↗

list_columns

Details each column of a table or view, with its type and any comment. Claude grasps the structure before it drafts a query.

When it helps
you need to know whether order dates are stored as dates or as text strings.

Sourcemotherduck.com · October 1, 2026 ↗

search_catalog

Searches the whole catalog (databases, schemas, tables, columns and shares) using fuzzy matching. MotherDuck presents it as the way to discover available data when you don't know the exact names.

When it helps
you vaguely remember a "churn" column but not which table holds it.

Sourcemotherduck.com · October 1, 2026 ↗

query

Executes SQL against your databases without changing anything: MotherDuck rejects any operation that would alter data, schema or account settings.

When it helps
you want a total by region with no risk of touching the data.
Watch out
past 2048 rows or 50000 characters, the result gets truncated.

Sourcemotherduck.com · October 1, 2026 ↗

ask_docs_question

Asks a question about DuckDB or MotherDuck and gets an answer drawn from their official documentation. The answer comes from those docs, not from your databases, which this tool doesn't touch.

When it helps
you want to check a DuckDB-specific syntax before running a query.

Sourcemotherduck.com · October 1, 2026 ↗

get_dive_guide

Loads MotherDuck's instructions for building a Dive. The publisher says to call it before any Dive is saved, so the code that follows matches what MotherDuck expects. It returns guidance only and leaves your account unchanged.

When it helps
you ask for a visualization and Claude first needs MotherDuck's expected format.

Sourcemotherduck.com · October 1, 2026 ↗

read_dive

Reads one Dive by its ID, including its full JSX/React component code. An optional version number lets it pull a specific earlier version. The Dive itself is left untouched.

When it helps
a chart has changed and you want to compare it with a previous version.

Sourcemotherduck.com · October 1, 2026 ↗

list_dives

Lists the Dives you own, from most to least trusted status (Endorsed, Ready, Draft, then Archived), with the most recent first. Archived Dives are excluded unless you ask for them.

When it helps
you want to review the Dives you've already saved before building a new one.

What Claude changes (5)

5 tools

Five tools that modify data, Dives or their sharing. No source details their confirmation, so the general rule below applies.

query_rw

Approval: see the rule

Runs SQL statements that can modify data or schema in your databases, the very operations the read-only tool turns away.

What Claude asks for
no source documents a confirmation for this write query, so the general approval rule is what applies.
When it helps
you want a summary table built from three raw tables.
Watch out
the same cap of 2048 rows and 50000 characters applies to returned results.

Sourcemotherduck.com · October 1, 2026 ↗

save_dive

Approval: see the rule

Creates a new Dive in your workspace and returns a link to open it. Before saving, the tool validates the code for common issues such as invalid SQL or missing exports.

What Claude asks for
nothing specific is documented for saving a Dive; the default rule below covers it.
When it helps
you want to keep a chart built during the conversation.
Watch out
a saved Dive is visible to the whole organization by default.

Sourcemotherduck.com · October 1, 2026 ↗

update_dive

Approval: see the rule

Changes the title, description or code of an existing Dive, then returns a link to the updated Dive.

What Claude asks for
MotherDuck's docs describe no dedicated check for updates, which leaves the general rule in charge.
When it helps
you want to fix the title or description of a Dive already saved.

Sourcemotherduck.com · October 1, 2026 ↗

delete_dive

Approval: see the rule

Removes a Dive from your workspace using its ID. MotherDuck states the action is permanent and the Dive can't be recovered afterwards.

What Claude asks for
the publisher's example shows a confirmation before deletion, but it isn't a guarantee; the general rule governs.
When it helps
you're clearing out draft visualizations nobody uses anymore.

Sourcemotherduck.com · October 1, 2026 ↗

share_dive_data

Approval: see the rule

Creates organization-wide shares for databases you own that a Dive uses, so others in the organization can view it.

What Claude asks for
no source describes a sharing-specific confirmation, so the default approval rule covers this one.
When it helps
coworkers see an empty Dive because it reads from a database that's still private.
Watch out
everyone in the organization then gets access to the shared data.

Approvals

What Claude checks with you first

By default, Claude stops and asks before every action it takes on an account for you. Here it covers five write tools.

No source says whether Claude asks before query_rw, save_dive, update_dive, delete_dive or share_dive_data, so the default rule covers them. On Team and Enterprise, workspace owners decide whether members may let some actions through without being asked again, and can keep reads open while closing writes. MotherDuck also documents a way to limit the assistant to read-only access. And Claude works with your MotherDuck rights, nothing more.

Plans

Which plans include it

None of the 819 sheets in the official directory shows plan availability. Connector by connector, that information isn't published anywhere.

The general rule is public: remote connectors are open to all users on Claude, Cowork, Claude Desktop and mobile. On Team and Enterprise, an Owner or Primary Owner enables the connector for the organization. For MotherDuck's current status, its sheet in the official directory is the reference to check.

Limits

Where the MotherDuck connector stops

A connector isn't an automation. Claude calls these tools while it answers you, and nothing fires when a table fills up with new rows.

Only the publisher documents this connector: neither Claude's help center nor Anthropic's docs have a page for it. The directory badge isn't a security audit, and Anthropic doesn't guarantee a publisher's tools behave as described, so connect only publishers you know. By default its sheet exposes five write tools, and the publisher documents a way to restrict the assistant to read-only access. MotherDuck's docs also describe other tools that aren't on the sheet: this page leaves them out.

FAQ

Claude MotherDuck connector: common questions

01What can Claude do with the MotherDuck connector?
Claude can explore your MotherDuck warehouse and answer numbers questions asked in plain language. Its fifteen tools list databases, shares, tables and columns, search the catalog, run read-only or read-write SQL, query the DuckDB and MotherDuck documentation, and manage Dives, the interactive visualizations you can save, reopen, edit, delete or share with your organization. Each saved Dive comes back as a link you can click to open it in MotherDuck.
02Can Claude change or delete data in MotherDuck?
Yes, five tools change something in your account. One runs SQL that can modify data or schema, three create, update or delete Dives, and the last creates organization-wide database shares so a Dive becomes readable by your coworkers. Deleting a Dive is permanent according to the publisher. The standard query tool, on the other hand, rejects any operation that would modify data. Writes go through the dedicated tool, not the standard one.
03Does Claude ask before changing my MotherDuck data?
By default, yes: Claude asks for confirmation before each action it takes on an account on your behalf. No source describes a confirmation specific to any MotherDuck tool, so that default rule covers write queries and Dive operations. The docs show an example where the assistant confirms before a deletion, without presenting it as a guarantee. On Team and Enterprise, owners can also close writes for the whole organization, and members can't reopen them alone.
04Which Claude plans support the MotherDuck connector?
No official source publishes plan availability connector by connector, and none of the 819 directory sheets shows it. The general rule: remote connectors are open to all users on Claude, Cowork, Claude Desktop and mobile, with an Owner or Primary Owner enabling them on Team and Enterprise. For the current status, check MotherDuck's sheet in the official directory from your own account, the only place that shows its current status.
05Does Claude see every database in our MotherDuck organization?
No, Claude works with your rights and nothing more. It sees the databases on your account, the ones you own plus shares sent to you that you attached. A database you couldn't open yourself stays closed to it. Watch the other direction, though: a Dive you save becomes visible to the whole organization by default, and sharing its data opens the underlying databases to your coworkers. Shares sent to you show up through a dedicated tool, with the URL needed to attach them.
06Why does Claude only return part of my MotherDuck query result?
Because MotherDuck caps every result at 2048 rows and 50000 characters, for reads and writes alike. Past that, the result is truncated and a message flags it. Your data is processed in your MotherDuck organization's region, but query results transit through the publisher's remote server on their way to Claude. The same cap applies to the standard query tool and to the write tool. These figures come from the query tool reference MotherDuck publishes, and a truncation message tells you when it kicks in.
07Claude or an automation tool for MotherDuck?
They do different jobs. Claude works in a conversation: you ask, it explores, queries, builds a Dive, and nothing runs outside the conversation. Nothing fires when a table receives new rows. An automation tool exists precisely to run a load or a calculation in the background, on an event or a schedule. One answers a question asked in the moment, the other runs a planned task: they are not two versions of the same service.
