Overview

What changes once Claude can reach your store

Running a small shop means dozens of short admin trips: add a product, check stock, set up a code for the weekend. With the connector, you tell Claude what you want in plain words and it does the lookup or the change in your Shopify store, within the data access you approved. Shopify's help center describes all but one of the 25 tools one by one, which is rare in this directory.

Build the catalog by talking. create-product sets up a product with its variants, options and stock tracking. update-product fixes titles, prices or images later, and bulk-update-product-status moves up to 50 products to active, draft or archived.

Know what is selling. run-analytics-query runs a query on your store's analytics data. list-orders and list-customers show who bought what.

Prepare a promotion. create-discount makes a percentage-off code, create-collection groups the products, and set-inventory corrects the count at one location.

What it does not do is spelled out by Shopify too. No refunds, no cancellations, no payment captures, no gift cards, even with write access. Orders and customer records are read, never edited. Your live theme, taxes, payments and domains stay in the admin. And nothing runs on its own: no tool fires when an order comes in. For that, the Shopify n8n integration and the Shopify Make integration do a different job, on a trigger.

Vocabulary

Five words before you connect

The vocabulary around this connector, in one minute.

Connector
The link you set up once between Claude and a Shopify store you own, so Claude can work in it while it answers you.
Tool
One named action the connector gives Claude. Shopify shows each action's name in your chat while it runs, so you can check it.
Authorization
The step in your Shopify admin where you approve the data access the connector requests. You can revoke it from Shopify later.
Approval
The confirmation Claude waits for before a change to your store. Shopify adds its own for changes made outside the named actions.
MCP
The shared standard behind connectors: it is what lets an assistant like Claude talk to an outside service such as Shopify.
Connect

Connect Shopify to Claude in three steps

  1. 01

    Find Shopify in Claude

Open Claude's settings, go to Customize then Connectors, and look for Shopify. Shopify says to use a desktop browser for this. On a Team or Enterprise workspace, an Owner or Primary Owner enables the connector before members connect.

  2. 02

    Start the connection

Click Connect. Shopify redirects you to your Shopify admin, where you sign in and review the access the connector requests. If the link breaks later, Disconnect and connect again.

  3. 03

    Choose the access level

Approve the access level in your Shopify admin. That screen belongs to Shopify, not to Claude, and it decides what the connector may do. Read access only lets Claude look; changes need write access.

Tools

The 25 tools, split by what they do

Shopify gives Claude 25 tools: 15 that read your account, 9 that change something in it, and 1 no official source describes.

Three groups: what Claude reads, what it changes in your store, and what no official source describes. Tool names stay exactly as Shopify and Claude show them.

What Claude reads (15)

15 tools

Fifteen tools that look at your store, its data or Shopify's docs and leave everything as it is.

search_products

Searches your catalog by keyword or by a filter such as price, tag or status, and lists the matching products.

When it helps
you want every candle tagged vanilla that is still in draft before the holiday launch.
Watch out
it finds products; for full details on one, Claude opens it with the next tool.

get-shop-info

Returns the connected store's name, domain, contact email, subscription, currency, time zone and country.

When it helps
you run two stores and want to be sure which one Claude is working on before you touch anything.
Watch out
it reports settings; store settings themselves stay in your admin.

Sourcehelp.shopify.com · September 30, 2026 ↗

get-product

Opens one product with its title, status, vendor, variants, images, tags and stock tracking, all in the conversation.

When it helps
a customer asks whether the large size of a hoodie exists in green, and you want the variant list at a glance.

Sourcehelp.shopify.com · September 30, 2026 ↗

list-orders

Lists your recent orders with the customer, totals, and payment and fulfillment status.

When it helps
Monday morning, you ask for the latest unfulfilled orders to plan the day's packing.
Watch out
the connector reads orders only; refunds and cancellations happen in your Shopify admin.

Sourcehelp.shopify.com · September 30, 2026 ↗

get-order

Shows one order in detail: line items, fulfillment status, shipping address and tracking.

When it helps
a buyer emails asking where their parcel is, and you want the carrier and tracking number without opening the admin or searching your inbox.

Sourcehelp.shopify.com · September 30, 2026 ↗

list-customers

Returns your customers with name, email, phone, order count and total spend.

When it helps
you want your top spenders to invite them to an early sale.
Watch out
customer records are read only here; any correction goes through your admin.

Sourcehelp.shopify.com · September 30, 2026 ↗

get-inventory-levels

Returns the stock for every variant of a product across all your locations, so Claude can answer before anyone counts shelves.

When it helps
a wholesale buyer wants forty units of one mug and you need to know which warehouse holds them.

Sourcehelp.shopify.com · September 30, 2026 ↗

run-analytics-query

Runs a ShopifyQL query, Shopify's own query language for reports, against your store's analytics data.

When it helps
total sales for the last 30 days, broken down by product, before you reorder stock.
Watch out
it only reports on the data and leaves the store as it is.

Sourcehelp.shopify.com · September 30, 2026 ↗

search_collections

Looks through your collections by keyword or by a filter such as title or collection type, and shows which ones already exist.

When it helps
you are not sure whether a gift collection already exists from last year before making a new one.

Sourcehelp.shopify.com · September 30, 2026 ↗

get-collection

Opens one collection with its title, description, image, products and rules, so you see exactly what it contains.

When it helps
checking which products a smart collection pulls in automatically before you feature it on the homepage for the spring sale.

Sourcehelp.shopify.com · September 30, 2026 ↗

switch-shop

Points the connector at another store you own, and has you authorize that store before Claude works in it.

When it helps
you run a retail shop and a wholesale shop and want to go from one to the other in a single session.
Watch out
check the shop info first so you know which store Claude is working on.

Sourcehelp.shopify.com · September 30, 2026 ↗

graphql_schema

Returns the parts of Shopify's Admin API a request can use, which lets Claude prepare work on areas with no dedicated action.

When it helps
you ask about an area no named tool covers, and Claude first checks how the Admin API structures it.
Watch out
you rarely call it yourself; it is groundwork.

Sourcehelp.shopify.com · September 30, 2026 ↗

graphql_query

Reads data through the Admin API from a part of your store that has no dedicated action, once the schema tool has shown where it lives.

When it helps
you ask about something none of the named tools covers, and Claude looks it up directly.
Watch out
it only reads; the next tool takes over for anything more, with its own confirmation.

Sourcehelp.shopify.com · September 30, 2026 ↗

validate_graphql_codeblocks

Checks an Admin API request for errors before it runs, a safety net for the tools that work outside named actions.

When it helps
before a request outside the named actions runs, Claude makes sure it is well formed.
Watch out
it checks the syntax, not whether the result is what you wanted.

Sourcehelp.shopify.com · September 30, 2026 ↗

search_docs_chunks

Searches Shopify's documentation when your question is about how the platform works, not about your store's data.

When it helps
you want to know how Shopify handles taxes for customers in another country before you open a new market, without leaving the conversation.

no fixed-amount codes, and existing codes stay untouched.

Watch out
it goes live on the storefront.

graphql_mutation

Asks you first

Makes a change through Shopify's Admin API to a part of your store that has no dedicated action.

What Claude asks for
Shopify says the connector asks you to confirm before it makes a change of this kind.
When it helps
an edit to an area of the store that none of the named tools reaches.
Watch out
read the confirmation carefully and review the result in your admin.

Undocumented (1)

1 tool

This name is on the directory sheet but not in Shopify's action table. No official text says what it does, and we will not guess from a name.

upload-image

Listed on the directory sheet but absent from Shopify's table of actions and from every other source we read. The page makes no claim about its effect, since a name is not documentation.

Watch out
whatever it turns out to be, the general approval rule below covers it.
Approvals

What Claude checks with you first

By default, Claude stops and asks before each action it takes on an account for someone. Shopify adds a documented confirmation for changes outside its named actions.

On Team and Enterprise workspaces, owners decide whether a member may let some actions through without being asked every time, and they can limit a connector across the organization, for instance reading only. Nobody overrides that from a personal account. Shopify says Claude's own controls can also restrict a connection to specific conversations. Claude works with your rights and nothing beyond: the access level you approved in Shopify and the permissions of your staff account set what it can do.

Plans

Which plans include it

None of the 819 sheets in the official directory shows plan availability. The answer per connector is published nowhere, which is a real hole in the catalog.

Anthropic publishes a general rule: remote connectors are open to all users on Claude, Cowork, Claude Desktop and mobile. On Team and Enterprise, an Owner or Primary Owner enables a connector before members can each connect. For the current state on your Claude account, the connector's sheet in the official directory is the place to look.

Limits

Where this connector stops

A connector is not an automation. Claude calls these tools while it answers you, so nothing happens when an order lands, stock runs low or a customer signs up.

Shopify spells out what stays in the admin, and the cards below list it. Claude acts through the staff account you connected and the access level you approved, nothing more. The tool list is an observed floor, not a promise. The partner badge in the directory is not a security audit, and Anthropic says on every sheet that it neither picks a publisher's tools nor guarantees their behavior. For a connector where two official sources disagree, see the Claude gmail connector.

FAQ

Questions about the Claude Shopify connector

01What can Claude do with the Shopify connector?
Claude can look after much of your store's day-to-day work from a conversation. Its 25 listed tools cover searching and editing products, reading orders and customers, checking and setting stock, creating percentage discounts, building and editing collections, running analytics queries, and reaching parts of the store without a dedicated action through Shopify's Admin API. Shopify's help center describes all but one of them. The 25th, upload-image, appears on the directory sheet with no description.
02Can Claude change products, stock or orders in my store?
Products, stock, collections and discounts, yes; orders, no. Nine tools write, covering new and edited products, bulk status changes, stock corrections at one location, percentage discount codes and collections, plus Admin API changes to parts of the store with no dedicated action. Shopify blocks refunds, cancellations, payment captures, returns and gift cards even with write access, and the connector only reads orders and customer records. Nothing changes unless you approved write access in your Shopify admin.
03Does Claude ask before it changes my Shopify store?
By default, yes: Claude asks for confirmation before each action it takes on an account for someone. Shopify documents one specific confirmation, for changes made through the Admin API to parts of the store with no dedicated action. For discount codes, the connector also asks you to confirm the start date and who can use the code. For the other writes, no source describes a dedicated step, so the default rule covers them. Owners on Team and Enterprise can loosen or tighten this.
04Which plans is the Shopify connector available on?
No official source publishes Claude plan availability connector by connector, and none of the 819 directory sheets shows it. Anthropic's general rule opens remote connectors to all users on Claude, Cowork, Claude Desktop and mobile, with an Owner or Primary Owner enabling them first on Team and Enterprise. On Shopify's side, you install the connector from Claude and approve its data access in your Shopify admin. The connector's sheet in the official directory is the only place that shows its current state.
05Can Claude see everything in my Shopify store?
No. Claude works within the access level you approved in your Shopify admin and within the permissions of the staff account it acts through. Read access lets it look; changes need write access. Shopify adds that some actions are read only by design. On Claude's side, a connection can be limited to specific conversations, and an owner of a Team or Enterprise workspace can restrict the connector for the whole organization.
06Why does Claude give me admin instructions instead of doing it?
Usually because it lacks the access to do it. Shopify says a connected tool reads your data but changes nothing until you approve write access, and the staff account it acts through sets what it may touch. Some actions stay blocked even then: refunds, cancellations, captures, returns, gift cards, store settings and the live theme. In those cases Claude can only point you to the admin. On Claude's side, a connection can also be limited to specific conversations.
07Should I use Claude or an automation tool with Shopify?
They do different jobs. Claude works in a conversation: you ask, it looks up, creates or updates, and nothing happens once you stop. It does not react when an order comes in or stock hits zero. When you need something to run on every store event, like sending each new order to your accounting tool, that belongs to an automation tool working on a trigger. For catalog work and quick answers on demand, the connector fits.
