Overview

What changes when Claude can search Shutterstock

Instead of typing keywords into the stock site and scrolling, you describe the visual or the sound you need while you work on a project in Claude. Claude runs the search and comes back with preview links and details about each asset, so you can shortlist options without leaving the conversation.

Images and video. With search set to images or video, Claude queries the library with a descriptive phrase and returns preview URLs plus metadata to help you choose.

Music. For music, the same tool works best with a few short keywords rather than a sentence, and the results again arrive as previews.

Sound effects. Setting the asset type to sound effects narrows the results to that category, and as with music, Shutterstock asks for short keyword queries rather than full sentences.

What Claude does not do here: the only tool says itself that it neither generates nor edits media, and that it handles no licensing and no downloads. Once you have picked an asset, you license and download it on Shutterstock. The directory description mentions downloading, which this page sets against the tool's own wording in the limits. Nothing runs on its own either; for scheduled jobs, look at automation tools, a separate trade, gathered on the Integrations hub.

Vocabulary

Five terms before you start

The words you will meet while plugging Shutterstock into Claude.

Connector
The link you set up once between Claude and an account you already have, so Claude can work in it while it answers you.
Tool
One named action a connector opens to Claude. Claude picks the ones it needs by itself; the directory sheet lists them by name.
Authorization
Shutterstock's own sign-in screen, where you hand Claude the access it will use. Given once per person, and it can be taken back.
Approval
The confirmation Claude waits for before going through with something that changes your account, shown in the chat when it matters.
MCP
The shared standard connectors are built on: it is what lets an assistant such as Claude talk to an outside service like Shutterstock.
Connect

Plug Shutterstock into Claude in three steps

  1. 01

    Find Shutterstock among your connectors

In Claude's settings, open Customize, then Connectors, and look for Shutterstock. On a Team or Enterprise workspace, an Owner or Primary Owner has to enable the connector first before each member can sign in.

  2. 02

    Start the connection

Click Connect on Shutterstock's row and sign in through the window Shutterstock opens itself. If the link ever breaks, the fix is to use Disconnect, then plug Shutterstock back in from that same row.

  3. 03

    Read the authorization screen

Check Shutterstock's authorization screen before you accept. It belongs to Shutterstock, not to Claude, and it sets what the access covers. You can also withdraw that access later from your Shutterstock account.

Tools

The single Shutterstock tool and what it does

Shutterstock gives Claude 1 tool: 1 that read your account, 0 that change something in it.

One tool, used for every kind of asset. Its name stays in English, exactly as Claude shows it.

1 tool

Approvals

What Claude asks before it acts

By default, Claude stops and asks for your go-ahead before each action it takes on an account on your behalf. The request shows up in the conversation, at the moment it counts.

With this connector there is little to approve: its only tool describes itself as read-only. On Team and Enterprise workspaces, owners still decide whether members may let some actions pass without a prompt, and they can restrict what any connector may do for the whole organization; nobody overrides that from a personal account. Claude works with the access you grant and nothing beyond it, whatever you ask in the chat.

Plans

Which plans include it

None of the 819 sheets in the official directory shows availability by plan. That answer is published nowhere, connector by connector: a real gap in the catalogue, not in our research.

The general rule is public: remote connectors are open to all users on Claude, Cowork, Claude Desktop and mobile. On Team and Enterprise, an Owner or Primary Owner enables the connector for the organization before members can connect one by one. For Shutterstock's current status on your account, check its sheet in the official directory.

Limits

Where this connector stops

A connector is not an automation. Claude calls this tool while it answers you: nothing searches by itself.

The tool list is an observed floor, not a promise: an administrator can open actions that appear on no public sheet. The directory's verification badge is not a security audit; Anthropic states on every sheet that it neither chooses a publisher's tools nor guarantees how they behave. This connector is documented only by Shutterstock, through the tool description its own server publishes; no Claude help article covers it.

Two official sources disagree

Can Claude download Shutterstock files through this connector?

What this page followsBoth were read the same day. The tool description is the more precise about what Claude can actually do: Claude returns previews, and licensing and downloading happen on Shutterstock. Check the directory sheet on your account in case the tool list changes.

FAQ

Claude Shutterstock connector: common questions

01What can Claude do with the Shutterstock connector?
Claude can search Shutterstock's stock library for you from the conversation. The directory sheet lists a single tool that looks for images, video, music or sound effects depending on the asset type, and returns preview links with metadata so you can choose. You describe what you need, Claude runs the search and shows the candidates. Licensing and downloading the asset you pick then happen on Shutterstock, not inside Claude, once you have made your choice.
02Can Claude buy, license or download Shutterstock assets?
No, not through this tool. Shutterstock's own description says the search tool is read-only and handles neither licensing nor downloads, and it does not generate or edit media either. The directory sheet's description does mention downloading, which is why the limits section lays out both texts. In practice, Claude finds and previews; the purchase or licence and the file itself stay on the Shutterstock side, where your account handles them.
03Does Claude ask before searching Shutterstock?
Claude asks by default before an action it carries out on an account for you. Shutterstock describes its only tool as read-only, and no source says whether a confirmation appears before a search, so the general rule is what applies. On Team and Enterprise workspaces, owners decide how prompts work for members and can restrict or block the connector for the whole organization, so what you see may depend on those settings.
04Which Claude plans include the Shutterstock connector?
No official source publishes plan availability connector by connector, and none of the 819 directory sheets shows it. The general rule is that remote connectors are open to all users on Claude, Cowork, Claude Desktop and mobile, with an Owner or Primary Owner enabling them first on Team and Enterprise. The connector's sheet in the official directory is the only place with its current status for your account, so check it while signed in.
05Does Claude see my whole Shutterstock account?
No. Claude works with the access you grant on Shutterstock's authorization screen and nothing beyond your rights. The single listed tool searches the public stock catalogue and returns previews; no source describes it reading your licence history, your saved collections or your billing. By default, the sheet exposes only that search, which is an observed floor: an administrator could open more, but nothing public says so today for this connector.
06Why does the directory mention downloads if the tool cannot download?
Because the two official texts do not say the same thing. The directory's description talks about searching and downloading assets, while the tool description published by Shutterstock's server says it returns previews and does not handle licensing or downloads. Both were read on the same day. The tool's own wording is the more precise about Claude's behaviour, so expect previews in the chat and finish the licence and download on Shutterstock.
07Claude or an automation tool for Shutterstock?
They do different jobs, so it depends on the use. Claude with the connector suits searching while you think through a project: refining a query, comparing previews, narrowing down a shortlist in conversation. An automation tool suits steps that must run without you, on a schedule or when something happens elsewhere. The connector only acts when you write to Claude and never searches on its own. What it returns is a set of previews to choose from, not licensed files.
