Overview

What changes when Claude can reach Smarter Drafter

You describe the matter in a sentence, for instance an NDA for a named client, and Claude looks for the matching form among the automations your firm has published. It then gathers the answers that form needs and hands them to Smarter Drafter, whose engine assembles the document. Claude collects and selects; the wording comes from your firm's approved precedents.

The right template without browsing. search_forms looks through published forms in your account by name or description, so a request in plain words lands on the automation that fits.

A draft filled through conversation. create_submission opens a submission against that form with the answers gathered so far, and update_submission_answer corrects a single field afterwards, which Tensis, the publisher, calls essential for file uploads.

Generation on the firm's engine. submit_submission turns the draft into a completed submission and starts document generation. The directory sheet says the finished file comes back in the conversation as PDF, DOCX or EML.

What it will not do: unpublished or draft automations stay invisible, and branching logic is not applied yet, so Claude may ask about fields your form would normally hide. Nothing starts by itself either: no document is assembled until someone asks in a chat. For hands-off flows, the Integrations hub covers automation tools, which do a different job, and the Claude connectors page lists the others.

Vocabulary

Five words before you connect

The vocabulary around this connector, in one minute.

Connector
A link you set up once between Claude and an account you already have, so Claude can work in that account while it answers you.
Tool
One named action the connector gives Claude. Claude picks the tools it needs as it answers, and the directory sheet lists them by name.
Authorization
The sign-in screen of the service itself, where you grant the access Claude uses afterwards. Given once per person, and revocable.
Approval
The confirmation Claude waits for before it goes ahead with something that changes your account, shown in the conversation.
MCP
The shared standard connectors are built on: it is what lets an assistant like Claude talk to an outside service such as Smarter Drafter.
Connect

Connect the Claude Smarter Drafter connector in three steps

  1. 01

    Find Smarter Drafter in Claude

Open Claude's settings, go to Customize then Connectors, and look Smarter Drafter up in the list. On a Team or Enterprise workspace, an Owner or Primary Owner enables the connector before members can each sign in.

  2. 02

    Start the connection

Click Connect on its row, then sign in to Smarter Drafter in the window the service opens. If the link breaks, use Disconnect and connect again. Access can also be withdrawn from your Smarter Drafter account itself.

  3. 03

    Approve the consent screen

On first connection, Smarter Drafter shows a consent screen listing the permissions requested. It belongs to the service, not to Claude, and it sets what the access covers. Read it, then accept.

Tools

The 6 tools, split by what they do

Smarter Drafter gives Claude 6 tools: 1 that read your account, 3 that change something in it, and 2 no official source describes.

Three groups: what Claude reads, what it changes, and what no official source describes. Tool names stay exactly as Claude shows them.

  • 1 read
  • 3 write
  • 2 not documented

What Claude reads (1)

1 tool

One tool that looks through your forms and changes nothing.

search_forms

Looks for published forms in your Smarter Drafter account, matching on name or description, and returns the candidates.

When it helps
you know the kind of document you need but not the exact name of the form in your account.
Watch out
drafts and unpublished automations never show up, even if you can see them in the app.

What Claude changes (3)

3 tools

Three tools that create, edit or finalize a submission in your account. No source spells out their confirmation, so the general rule below applies.

create_submission

Approval: see the rule

Opens a new submission against a chosen form and fills it with the answers Claude has collected so far in the chat.

What Claude asks for
no source describes a confirmation for this tool; the general approval rule further down covers it.
When it helps
a client's details are already in the conversation and you want the first pass of the document started.

submit_submission

Approval: see the rule

Finalizes a draft submission so it becomes a completed one, and starts the document generation on Smarter Drafter's side.

What Claude asks for
Tensis documents no confirmation step before finalizing; the default rule below is what applies.
When it helps
every required field is answered and the draft is ready to become a generated document.

update_submission_answer

Approval: see the rule

Changes one field answer in a submission that already exists. Tensis singles it out for file uploads and for correcting draft submissions.

What Claude asks for
no official source spells out a confirmation for edits; the general approval rule below covers them.
When it helps
a date was wrong in the draft and you want only that field fixed, not the whole submission redone.

Undocumented (2)

2 tools

These two names appear on the directory sheet only. The publisher's tool reference uses other names, and this page will not match them by guesswork.

get_fields_by_form

This exact name is on the directory sheet but in no official text. Smarter Drafter's reference table lists its tools under other names, so this page describes nothing about what it does here and leaves it to the general approval rule below.

get_submission_generated_documents_url

No official source mentions this name: the publisher's tool table and the directory's description both leave it out, and nothing on either page ties it to a listed feature. Claude's default approval rule is all that can be said about it.

Approvals

What Claude checks with you first

By default, Claude stops and asks before each action it takes on an account for someone. The prompt shows up in the conversation when it matters.

On Team and Enterprise workspaces, owners decide whether a member may let some actions through without a prompt each time. They can also limit what a connector may do for the whole organization, such as keeping search open and closing writing. That setting binds everyone. Claude works with your rights and nothing more: Tensis says each user sees only the forms they may access, and every action is attributed to that user.

Plans

Which plans include it

None of the 819 sheets in the official directory shows plan availability, so the answer for this connector is published nowhere.

The published rule is general: remote connectors are open to all users on Claude, Cowork, Claude Desktop and mobile. On Team and Enterprise, an Owner or Primary Owner opens a connector for the organization before members can connect. You also need an active Smarter Drafter account, since the connector works inside it. For the live state, the connector's sheet in the official directory is the reference.

Limits

Where this connector stops

A connector is not an automation. Claude calls these tools while it answers you, so no document is assembled when a matter opens or a form changes.

Everything specific here comes from Tensis, through its developer reference and the directory sheet: no Claude help article covers Smarter Drafter. The verified badge is not a security audit, and Anthropic states on every sheet that it neither picks the tools a publisher exposes nor guarantees how they behave. Two of the six listed names do not match the publisher's own reference, a gap worth knowing before relying on them.

FAQ

Questions about the Claude Smarter Drafter connector

01What can Claude do with the Smarter Drafter connector?
Claude can find the right published form in your Smarter Drafter account, collect the answers it needs in conversation, and send them to Smarter Drafter's engine to produce the document. The other two listed tools have no official description. Four of the six listed tools are documented by the publisher: search_forms, create_submission, update_submission_answer and submit_submission. The directory says the finished document comes back in the chat as PDF, DOCX or EML, generated from your firm's approved precedents rather than written by Claude.
02Can Claude create or change submissions in Smarter Drafter?
Yes, three documented tools write. create_submission starts a submission against a form with the answers gathered so far, update_submission_answer changes a single field in an existing submission, and submit_submission finalizes a draft and starts document generation. No listed tool is described as deleting a submission or editing a template. The document itself is assembled by Smarter Drafter from your firm's precedents, so Claude never rewrites the legal wording. The output stays identical to completing the form by hand.
03Does Claude ask before it submits a document for generation?
By default, yes: Claude asks for confirmation before each action it takes on an account for someone. No source describes a specific confirmation for create_submission, update_submission_answer or submit_submission, so that general rule covers them. Tensis adds one documented check: when several forms match your request, the assistant lists them and asks which one to use. On Team and Enterprise, owners can also restrict the connector for the whole organization, for instance by closing every writing tool.
04Which Claude plans is the Smarter Drafter connector on?
No official source publishes plan availability connector by connector, and none of the 819 directory sheets shows it. The general rule is that remote connectors are open to all users on Claude, Cowork, Claude Desktop and mobile, with an Owner or Primary Owner enabling them first on Team and Enterprise. The connector's sheet in the official directory shows the current state for your account. Even on the best-documented connectors, official sources do not always agree from one plan to the next.
05Can Claude see every form and matter in our firm's account?
No. Tensis says every user sees only the forms and automations they are allowed to access, and actions are attributed to that individual for the audit trail. Claude works with those rights and nothing beyond. Draft or unpublished automations do not appear at all. On Team and Enterprise, an owner can also limit what the connector may do for the whole organization, for example keeping search open and closing writing, and nobody can get around that setting from their own account.
06Why does Claude ask questions that seem irrelevant to my form?
Because conditional logic is not applied yet. In the current release, Smarter Drafter returns a form's fields as a flat list without branching, so Claude may ask about a field that your form would normally hide based on an earlier answer. The publisher presents this as the state of the current release. Whatever you answer, the document itself is still generated by Smarter Drafter from the firm's approved precedents, and the directory says every word of the output comes from them.
07Claude or an automation tool for document assembly?
They do different jobs. With this connector, a lawyer describes the matter in a conversation, answers the questions Claude raises and gets the document back in the chat, which suits one-off drafting. An automation tool runs steps on its own when something happens, like a new matter in a practice system, and nothing here starts without a request. Per the directory sheet, the finished document comes back in the conversation as PDF, DOCX or EML.
