Why use it when you're picking a firm
The L Suite is a community of more than 5000 in-house lawyers, and TopCounsel turns its members' experience into outside counsel recommendations for specific matters. The connector lets you tap that pool from a chat: describe the matter, and Claude brings back firms to weigh up without breaking your workflow.
Build a first shortlist. find_outside_counsel is the connector's only tool. The publisher says it lets you search, shortlist and compare outside counsel recommendations from Claude.ai, Claude Desktop, Claude Code or Cowork.
Start from first-hand feedback. The publisher stresses that every recommendation rests on direct feedback from in-house lawyers rather than a generic legal directory, so you get the pooled judgment of CLOs, GCs, in-house counsel and legal ops leaders.
Know how firms get ranked. Per the official description, the ranking draws on aggregated member sentiment, each lawyer's speaking engagements and content, evidence of expertise they supply, interviews and other internal datasets.
Now the limits. By default the sheet exposes reading only: no tool contacts a firm, sends a request or opens a matter. Nothing runs on its own either; Claude only calls the tool while it's answering. Anything triggered automatically is an automation tool's job, a different trade; the Integrations hub covers that side.
The jargon, in one minute
Five terms you'll see while connecting TopCounsel.
- Connector
- The link you set up once between Claude and an account you already have, so Claude can work in it while it answers you.
- Tool
- One named thing a connector lets Claude do. Claude decides on its own when to use it, and the directory lists tools by name.
- Authorization
- The service's own sign-in screen, where you hand Claude the access it will use. Granted once per person and withdrawn the same way.
- Approval
- The confirmation Claude waits for before finishing something that changes your account, shown in the chat when it matters.
- MCP
- The shared standard connectors are built on, which is what lets an assistant like Claude talk to an outside service.
Connect TopCounsel to Claude in three steps
- 01
Find TopCounsel in Claude
In Claude's settings, open Customize, then Connectors, and look for TopCounsel by The L Suite. On a Team or Enterprise workspace, an Owner or Primary Owner switches the connector on first so each member can sign in.
- 02
Start the connection
Hit Connect on its row and sign in through the window The L Suite opens itself. If the link breaks down the line, Disconnect and connect again. The L Suite lists a support address for the connector on its directory sheet.
- 03
Read the authorization screen
Go through the authorization screen before you accept. It belongs to the service, not to Claude, and it sets what the access covers. Whatever you grant there can be pulled back later from the service account.
The connector's single tool
TopCounsel by The L Suite gives Claude 1 tool: 1 that read your account, 0 that change something in it.
One tool, and it reads. Its name stays exactly as Claude shows it.
- 1 read
What Claude reads (1)
1 toolOne tool that looks up The L Suite's recommendations without changing anything.
find_outside_counsel
Queries The L Suite's outside counsel recommendations and surfaces firms that fit your matter, which you can then shortlist and compare inside the chat. Each suggestion is grounded in feedback from in-house lawyers.
What Claude checks with you first
By default, Claude stops and asks before every action it takes on an account for you. On this connector, the sheet doesn't expose any action like that.
The only tool reads recommendations: no source credits it with writing, and none describes a confirmation specific to it. On Team and Enterprise workspaces, owners can still restrict what a connector may do across the whole org, and decide whether a member can let some actions through without being asked again. Claude works with your rights on the service and nothing beyond them. The official read-versus-write label for each tool only shows in a connected account's settings, not on a public page.
Which plans include it
None of the 819 sheets in the official directory shows plan availability; nobody publishes it connector by connector.
Anthropic's general rule is public, though: remote connectors are open to all users on Claude, Cowork, Claude Desktop and mobile. On Team and Enterprise, an Owner or Primary Owner first switches them on for the org. For TopCounsel's current status, check its sheet in the official directory from your own account.
Where this connector stops
A connector isn't an automation. Claude calls the tool while it answers you, so nothing fires when a new matter opens.
Only The L Suite documents this connector, in a short document linked from the sheet; neither Claude's help center nor Anthropic's docs cover it. A sheet showing only reading is an observed floor, not a guarantee, since an admin can open more than a public sheet lists. The directory's partner badge isn't a security audit, and Anthropic notes on every sheet that it doesn't pick a publisher's tools or vouch for how they behave.
