Overview

What the Clearbit Zapier integration is for

Clearbit adds social, demographic and company data to your records on people and businesses. Inside Zapier it plays one specific role: a search step that sits between another app's event and the action that follows, turning a lone email into a profile your sales team can actually use.

Three outcomes come up again and again. A CRM record filled in the moment a prospect submits a form, with Find Person And/Or Company placed just before the contact update. A target-account list where every company name gets its website back, through Find a Company's Domain by Name. A sales alert that names the business behind a new signup, by passing the email domain to Find a Company by Domain.

What Zapier does not do with Clearbit is worth knowing up front. No triggers: Clearbit never starts a Zap, so another app always has to go first. No actions either: nothing gets written into Clearbit. And because a search adds a step, every Zap that uses one turns multi-step, which means a paid plan from day one, even though Clearbit itself is not a paid-only app.

Clearbit is also available on n8n and Make. The Clearbit n8n integration and Clearbit Make integration pages show what each tool exposes.

Vocabulary

Zapier vocabulary in one minute

Seven terms, then the rest of the page reads cleanly.

Zap
The automation you build on Zapier: one trigger, then one or more actions that run each time the trigger event happens.
Trigger
The event in an app that starts the Zap. With Clearbit it always comes from somewhere else: a form, a CRM, a signup page.
Action
What the Zap does once it has started: the step that writes, sends or moves something on your behalf.
Task
The unit Zapier bills: one action that completes successfully. Your plan quota is a count of those.
Search step
A step that looks up something already stored in an app and passes it to the steps after it. That is all Clearbit does here.
Multi-step Zap
Any Zap beyond one trigger and one action. A single search or filter is enough to make one, and it then needs a paid plan.
Filter
A step that lets the Zap continue only when the incoming data meets your condition, and stops it otherwise.
Cost

What it really costs

Clearbit is not a paid-only app. The Zap around it is another story.

  • Free plan100 tasks a month, 2-step Zaps
  • Zap with a searchMulti-step, paid plan
  • Trigger cost0 tasks
  • Paid-only appNo

The trigger never costs a task, and only a successful action is counted; a failed one costs nothing. The free plan gives you 100 tasks a month, but it only builds two-step Zaps: one trigger, one action. A Clearbit search always comes on top of those two, wedged in the middle. That makes the Zap multi-step, and multi-step Zaps need a paid plan. Budget for that plan before you design the enrichment flow.

Connect

Connect your Clearbit account

  1. 01

    Open Apps

In Zapier, go to the Apps page of your account and click + Add connection. A dialog opens so you can search for the app you want to link by name and add.

  2. 02

    Choose Clearbit

Type Clearbit, pick it from the results and confirm with Add connection. A new tab opens on the Clearbit sign-in screen, which is where the actual linking happens.

  3. 03

    Allow access

Sign in to Clearbit in that tab and let Zapier use the account. You need an active Clearbit account, and it is the one every search in your Zap will run against.

First Zap

Your first Clearbit Zap

GoalWhen someone submits the site form, look up the person and their company, then update the matching CRM record.

  1. 01

    Set the trigger

Create a Zap and pick your form app as the starting point. Test it: Zapier fetches the three most recent submissions, so choose one with a real work email.

  2. 02

    Add the search

Add a step, choose Clearbit, then Find Person And/Or Company, listed under the SEARCH heading at the bottom of Action event. Map the email field.

  3. 03

    Handle the empty case

Decide what happens when Clearbit finds nobody, through Successful if no search results are found?. Switched on, the Zap carries on empty-handed; left alone, it stops.

  4. 04

    Add the action

Finish with the CRM update. Map what Clearbit returned, such as the company name, into the matching fields of the record you are updating.

  5. 05

    Test and publish

Run each step once, read what comes back, then click Publish. Our Zapier training covers this kind of build in depth, step by step.

Searches

The four Clearbit searches

4 search steps look for data that already exists in Clearbit, so a later step can use it.

A search slots in after a trigger and before an action. Three settings decide how it behaves when the result is not the one you expected.

1

Find a Company by Domain

Search

In Zapier“Finds a company by domain.”

Give it a domain name and it identifies the business behind it, then passes that company profile to the rest of your Zap.

When to use it
a new user signs up with a work address, you strip out the domain and want to know which company they belong to before pinging an account executive.
Watch out
the domain field is required and expects a plain site name, not a full email or URL.
2

Find a Company's Domain by Name

Search

In Zapier“Finds a company's domain by name.”

This one runs the other way: you supply a company name and get its web domain back, ready to reuse further down the Zap.

When to use it
your target-account sheet only holds business names and you want each row completed with the website address.
Watch out
the company name is the only input and it is required, so the starting app has to carry it.
3

Find Person And/Or Company

Search

In Zapier“Finds a person and their company by their email address. If the person is not found, company information only will be returned (if found).”

From a single email address you get both the person and their employer. When the person cannot be found, Clearbit still returns the company details if it has them.

When to use it
to enrich every inbound lead from a form before it reaches your CRM.
Watch out
a partial answer is normal, so plan for blank person fields in the destination record.
4

Find Person

Search

In Zapier“Finds a person by email address.”

Focused on the individual only, this search takes an email and returns what Clearbit knows about that person, without looking up their company.

When to use it
to tailor a welcome email to a new subscriber's profile when the employer does not matter much.
Watch out
the email address is required; if the starting app leaves it blank, the step finds nothing.

The three settings every search exposes

  1. Successful if no search results are found?
Left on its default, a search that finds nothing stops the Zap and skips the steps that relied on it. Switched on, the Zap continues empty-handed.
  2. Create X if it doesn't exist yet?
This box turns a search into a find-or-create. Clearbit offers no such variant: nothing can be created in Clearbit from a Zap.
  3. If multiple search results are found?
Three ways out when several items match: keep the first one (the default), stop the Zap, or pass all of them on at once.
When it breaks

When it breaks

Zapier documents no Clearbit-specific limit. Failures follow Zapier's general rules.

Four cases cover most of it. For a deeper diagnosis, the Zapier troubleshooting guide walks through the usual suspects.

  • Existing contacts stay bare

A Zap only handles what arrives after you publish it. Leads already sitting in your CRM will not be enriched; that backfill is a separate project.
  • The Zap that loops

If the action updates the very place the trigger watches, each update sets the Zap off again and your task count drains fast.
  • A bulk import gets held

A trigger that suddenly returns a huge batch, after an import or a migration, can be held back by Zapier's flood protection.
  • Nothing found, Zap stopped

On the default setting, a Clearbit search with no match stops the Zap. Switch on success with no results if the next steps must run anyway.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

01Is the Clearbit Zapier integration free?
Clearbit is not a paid-only app, but in practice you will need a paid Zapier plan. The free plan comes with 100 tasks a month and only builds two-step Zaps: one trigger and one action. Clearbit offers nothing but searches, and a search always slots in between those two. That pushes the Zap to three steps, which makes it multi-step, and Zapier reserves multi-step Zaps for its paid plans. Plan for that before you build.
02How many tasks does a Clearbit Zap use?
Only successful actions count, one task each. The trigger never costs anything, and a failed action is not billed either. If you chain several actions after the search, each one counts on its own: three successful actions means three tasks every time the Zap runs. Checking for new data on the trigger side costs nothing, however often Zapier looks. On the free plan the quota is 100 tasks a month, but a Clearbit Zap needs a paid plan anyway.
03Does Clearbit work in real time in Zapier?
Clearbit has no trigger, so the answer depends on the app that starts the Zap. If that trigger is instant, the Zap runs the moment the event happens, whatever your plan. If it is a polling trigger, Zapier checks on a timer: 15 minutes on Free, 2 minutes on Professional, 1 minute on Team and Enterprise. The Clearbit search then runs straight after, as the Zap reaches it. A Zap built on an instant trigger shows a lightning bolt in the editor.
04What do you need to connect Clearbit to Zapier?
An active Clearbit account and a Zapier account. You add the connection from the Apps page in Zapier with + Add connection, sign in to Clearbit in the tab that opens, then grant access. On the data side, you need a starting app that supplies an email address, a domain or a company name, because every Clearbit search requires one of the three. Without that input there is nothing to enrich.
05Why does the Zap stop when Clearbit finds nobody?
Because that is how a search step behaves by default in Zapier. When nothing matches, the Zap stops and any step that depended on the result is skipped. To keep going anyway, switch on Successful if no search results are found? in the Clearbit step, and the Zap carries on empty-handed. Also consider Find Person And/Or Company, which can still return the company when the person is unknown. Plan the CRM fields accordingly.
06What if the operation you need is not there?
Clearbit exposes four searches in Zapier and nothing else: no trigger to start a Zap, no action to write into Clearbit. If your goal is to kick off an automation from Clearbit or store data in it, Zapier will not cover that. Check what the Clearbit integrations on n8n and Make offer, since they do not necessarily expose the same operations. Otherwise keep Clearbit mid-Zap and let other apps handle the writing.
07Zapier, Make or n8n for Clearbit?
No tool wins by default; it comes down to your criteria. First, the Clearbit operations each one exposes, compared side by side. Second, how each tool counts what you consume, keeping in mind that on Zapier a search makes the Zap multi-step. Third, where the automation runs and who maintains it. Answer those three questions against your actual use case before you pick one. The answer differs from one team to the next.
