Overview

What the Clerk Zapier integration actually does for you

Clerk handles sign-in, user profiles and organizations for the apps developers build. Through Zapier, a new user or a new organization in Clerk can start an automation, and that automation can create, update, find or delete users and organizations in Clerk without anyone writing code.

Three outcomes come up again and again. A workspace waiting for every signup: New User fires and Create Organization sets up the matching organization. Accounts opened from outside: a form or a sales tool feeds Create User, so people get a Clerk account without visiting a sign-up page. Records that stay tidy: Update Organization and Update User correct details once they change elsewhere.

Now the limits. Both triggers are polling, so on the free plan a new user can wait up to 15 minutes before the Zap notices. There is no trigger for a user or an organization being updated or deleted, only for new ones. Every update, delete and search needs the Clerk ID (or the organization slug), so a Zap that starts in another tool has to carry that ID or find it first. And nothing that existed before the Zap went live gets picked up.

If you want a second opinion on the platform itself, our Zapier review goes through it, and n8n vs Zapier is the comparison to read before picking a platform.

Vocabulary

Zapier words, in one minute

Eight terms keep coming back below. Here they are once, in plain English, so nothing needs a second look.

Zap
The automation you build on Zapier: one starting event, then one or more steps that run every time that event happens.
Trigger
The event that starts the Zap, such as a new user in Clerk. Once the Zap is on, Zapier waits for it to show up.
Action
What the Zap does after it starts: the step that creates, updates or removes something in an app for you.
Task
The unit Zapier bills. Each action that completes successfully is one task, and your plan caps how many you get.
Polling vs instant
Polling means Zapier checks the app on a timer for new items. Instant means the app calls Zapier itself. Both Clerk triggers poll.
Filter
A step that lets the Zap carry on only when what arrived meets the condition you set, and stops it otherwise.
Search step
A step that looks up something that already exists, like a Clerk user by ID, so later steps can use what it found.
Connection
Your Clerk account linked to Zapier once, then reused by every Clerk step in every Zap you build.
Cost

What a Clerk Zap really costs

Polling is free. Zapier can check Clerk for new users as often as your plan allows, and none of those checks is billed.

  • Free plan100 tasks a month
  • Steps on the free plan1 trigger + 1 action
  • Clerk triggersPolling, interval set by plan
  • Premium appNo

You pay in tasks: one per action that succeeds, nothing for the trigger, nothing for a failed action. A Zap that creates an organization for each new user costs one task per signup. The free plan gives 100 tasks a month and unlimited Zaps, limited to one trigger plus one action, with a check every 15 minutes. A second action, a filter or a search makes the Zap multi-step, which needs a paid plan. Clerk is not a premium app.

Connect

Connect Clerk to Zapier in three steps

  1. 01

    Start from the Apps page

In Zapier, open Apps and click + Add connection. In the dialog that opens next, type Clerk in the search box and pick it from the list of results that comes back.

  2. 02

    Sign in on Clerk's side

Click Add connection. A tab opens where you sign in to the Clerk account behind the application you want to automate. You need an account on the app, plus access to anything you do not own yourself.

  3. 03

    Grant access

Allow Zapier to use the account. The connection is then saved once, and every Clerk step in every Zap reuses it, so the next automation starts with Clerk already linked.

First Zap

Your first Clerk Zap: an organization for every new signup

GoalEach person who signs up to your product gets their own organization in Clerk, ready for teammates.

  1. 01

    Build: pick the trigger

Create a Zap, choose Clerk as the app and New User as the event that starts it, then select the Clerk connection you made earlier.

  2. 02

    Test the trigger

Run the test. Zapier pulls back the three most recent users on the account, so you map fields on a real signup rather than an empty sample.

  3. 03

    Add Create Organization

Add a Clerk action with Create Organization. Its only required field is Name: build it from what the trigger's test actually returned.

  4. 04

    Test the action

Test the step once and check the new organization in Clerk. One trigger plus one action keeps this Zap within the free plan's two-step limit.

  5. 05

    Publish

Click Publish to switch the Zap on. From then on, every new user that Zapier's next check finds gets an organization; earlier users do not.

Triggers

Clerk triggers: what can start a Zap

2 events start a Zap when something happens in Clerk. Zapier checks for them at the interval your plan allows.

1

New Organization

Polling trigger

In Zapier“Triggers when a new organization is created in Clerk.”

Starts a Zap whenever a new organization is created in your Clerk instance. It is the hook for anything that should happen once per new client account.

How it fires
Zapier goes and looks at regular intervals, and how often depends on your plan: every 15 minutes on the free one
When to use it
a B2B tool that wants each new customer organization tidied up or mirrored into an internal record as soon as it exists.
Watch out
it only reports new organizations; a renamed or deleted one never starts this Zap.
2

New User

Polling trigger

In Zapier“Triggers when a new user is created in Clerk.”

Picks up each new user created in Clerk and hands that person to the next steps. Zapier remembers who it has already seen, so the same signup does not run the Zap twice.

How it fires
Zapier goes and looks at regular intervals, and how often depends on your plan: every 15 minutes on the free one
When to use it
giving every fresh signup a workspace of their own before they log in a second time.
Watch out
a Zap that answers this trigger with Create User feeds itself and keeps creating accounts.
Actions

Clerk actions: what your Zap can do

Clerk gives you 6 actions. For each one: what it does for you, when to reach for it, and what to watch out for.

1

Create Organization

Action

In Zapier“Creates a new organization in Clerk.”

Sets up a new organization in Clerk with just a name, which is all the step requires.

When to use it
every signed contract should come with a dedicated organization for the client's team.
Watch out
if a New Organization Zap also writes back here, you risk a loop.
2

Create User

Action

In Zapier“Creates a new user in Clerk.”

Opens a Clerk account from another tool. The email address is the only required field, and an option lets the step skip sign-in validation checks such as length or complexity.

When to use it
a deal marked won in your sales tool gives the customer access straight away.
Watch out
skipping validation also skips the safeguards your sign-in rules normally apply.
3

Delete Organization

Action

In Zapier“Deletes an organization from Clerk.”

Removes an organization from Clerk, which you point to by ID or slug. It suits clean-up at the end of a client relationship.

When to use it
a cancelled account in your billing tool should not leave an empty organization behind.
Watch out
double-check the field mapping before you publish, because the step does exactly what the ID says.
4

Delete User

Action

In Zapier“Deletes a user from Clerk.”

Removes a user from Clerk, given their user ID. It closes the loop on offboarding without opening the dashboard.

When to use it
a contract ends and the person should lose access the same day.
Watch out
test it on a dummy account first; a wrong ID mapped here removes the wrong person.
5

Update Organization

Action

In Zapier“Updates an existing organization in Clerk.”

Edits an organization you point to by its Clerk ID or its slug. That reference is the one required field.

When to use it
a client renames their company in your billing tool and the organization should follow.
Watch out
the step only knows the organization you point to, so check that the ID or slug you map really points to it.
6

Update User

Action

In Zapier“Updates an existing user in Clerk.”

Changes an existing Clerk user, identified by their user ID. Two switches matter: one skips validation when updating the sign-in secret, the other makes a sign-in secret optional for that user.

When to use it
correcting a user's record after support edits it in your helpdesk.
Watch out
without the user ID mapped from an earlier step, nothing can be updated.
Searches

Clerk searches: fetching a user or an organization

2 search steps look for data that already exists in Clerk, so a later step can use it.

Both Clerk searches look things up by ID, and the organization one also accepts a slug. They sit at the bottom of the Action event list, under SEARCH, and some fields offer + Add search step to insert one just before the current step.

1

Find Organization

Search

In Zapier“Finds an organization by ID or slug in Clerk.”

Looks up an organization from its Clerk ID or its slug and hands the result to the next steps, which is handy to confirm it still exists before touching it.

When to use it
an invoice arrives with the client's slug and you need the organization before updating it.
Watch out
with no match and the default setting, the Zap stops at this step.
2

Find User

Search

In Zapier“Finds a user by ID in Clerk.”

Fetches a Clerk user from their user ID, so the following steps can read that person's current record instead of an old copy.

When to use it
your support tool stores the Clerk user ID and you want the live profile before replying.
Watch out
it searches by ID only, so an email address alone will not find anyone here.

The three settings every search exposes

  1. Successful if no search results are found?
On its default, a search that finds nothing stops the Zap and skips the steps that depended on it. Switched on, the Zap carries on empty-handed.
  2. Create X if it doesn't exist yet?
This box turns a search into find-or-create. Clerk offers no such variant, so neither of these two searches shows it.
  3. If multiple search results are found?
Three ways out when several items match: keep the first one (the default), stop the Zap, or pass all of them on at once.
When it breaks

When a Clerk Zap breaks

Zapier links one getting-started article to Clerk; everything else below comes from how Zapier itself behaves with polling triggers and actions that write back.

Go through these before you publish. When a Zap still misbehaves, the Zapier troubleshooting page picks up from there.

  • Users created before the Zap are skipped

A Zap only reacts to what happens after it is switched on. Existing users and organizations never pass through it; moving that backlog is a separate job.
  • New User feeding Create User

A Zap that writes into the very place its trigger watches sets itself off again and again, creating accounts and burning through tasks fast.
  • A bulk import holds the Zap back

If a migration drops a huge batch of users into Clerk at once, Zapier's flood protection can pause the trigger rather than run on all of them.
  • A delay on the free plan

Both triggers poll, so on Free a new user can wait up to 15 minutes before the Zap starts. Professional checks every 2 minutes, Team and Enterprise every minute.
  • No ID, no update

Update, delete and search steps all need a Clerk ID or slug. A Zap that starts elsewhere without one fails at that step until the ID is mapped.
  • Duplicates are filtered for you

Zapier remembers which users and organizations it has already seen on a polling trigger, so the same item does not start the Zap twice.

FAQ

Clerk Zapier integration: common questions

01Is the Clerk Zapier integration free?
Yes, it runs on Zapier's free plan, because Clerk is not a premium app. The free plan includes 100 tasks a month and unlimited Zaps, with polling every 15 minutes. The real limit is the shape of the Zap: one trigger and one action. Creating an organization for each new user fits that. Adding a search step to find a user first, or a second action, turns the Zap into a multi-step one that needs a paid plan.
02How many tasks does a Clerk Zap use?
One task per action that completes, and none for the trigger. A New User Zap that runs Create Organization uses one task per signup. Chain Update User after it and each run costs two. Zapier checking Clerk for new users is free however often it happens, and a failed action does not count against your plan. A few apps and actions on Zapier take more than one task when they complete.
03Does Clerk work in real time with Zapier?
No. Both Clerk triggers, New User and New Organization, are polling triggers: Zapier checks Clerk at a fixed interval and keeps only what it has not seen yet. The interval depends on your plan: 15 minutes on Free, 2 on Professional, 1 on Team and Enterprise. On paid plans the interval can be changed, and a check can be run by hand from the editor when you are testing. This type is set by the app and cannot be switched to instant.
04What does it take to connect Clerk to Zapier?
A Clerk account, plus access to anything you do not own yourself and want the Zap to touch. In Zapier, open Apps, click + Add connection, search for Clerk, then sign in on Clerk's side and grant access. The connection is saved once and reused by every Clerk step. Before building, check where your Clerk IDs live: updates, deletes and searches all need a user ID or an organization ID or slug.
05Why does a Clerk update or delete step fail?
Usually because the step has no Clerk ID to work with. Update User, Delete User and Find User need a user ID, and the organization steps need an ID or a slug. A Zap that starts in a CRM or a form tool rarely carries that value. Either store the Clerk ID in that tool when the account is created, or add a search step before the action and map what it returns. A search makes the Zap multi-step, which needs a paid plan.
06What if the Clerk operation you need is not in Zapier?
Then this integration does not offer it today. Zapier exposes 2 triggers, 6 actions and 2 searches for Clerk: new users and organizations as triggers, create, update and delete for both, and finding either by ID. There is no trigger for an updated or deleted record, and no search by email. You can sometimes get close by combining steps, for instance storing the Clerk ID in your other tool so a search by ID becomes possible.
07Zapier, Make or n8n for Clerk?
It comes down to your criteria rather than a single winner. On Zapier, Clerk runs on the free plan for two-step Zaps, with 2 polling triggers, 6 actions and 2 searches, and the trigger delay depends on your plan. The questions to put to each platform are the same: does it expose the exact Clerk operation your scenario needs, how does it bill a run with several steps, how quickly does it see a new user, and who will maintain it.
