Overview

What the CodeREADr Zapier integration actually does for you

CodeREADr turns phones and tablets into barcode scanners for event entry, attendance and asset tracking. Connecting it to Zapier means two things: every scan made on a chosen service can start an automation elsewhere, and other apps can add or refresh the barcodes CodeREADr checks against.

Three results people build with it. First, a live scan log: New Postback Receiver Scan fires on each scan, and a spreadsheet or database in another app gets one line per badge, ticket or asset. Second, an always-current list of valid codes: Add/Update Barcode Value creates a code in a CodeREADr database, or refreshes it if it is already there, so a registration made in another tool is scannable at the door. Third, a heads-up for the team: the same scan trigger, followed by a message action in a chat app, tells someone a specific badge or item just went through.

Now the limits, because the catalog is short. There is no search step here, so a Zap cannot look up an existing barcode before acting. There is one trigger only, tied to one service at a time. And there is a single action: anything beyond adding or updating a value (a report, an export, a change to a service) is out of reach from Zapier with this app.

If you weigh other tools, the CodeREADr Make integration page exists for the same app, and the n8n vs Zapier comparison sets the two side by side. Judge them on your own criteria, not on ours.

Vocabulary

Zapier words in one minute

Eight terms come back on this page. Here is each one in plain words, once.

Zap
The automation you build on Zapier: one trigger, then one or more actions that run every time that trigger event happens.
Trigger
The event in an app that starts the Zap. With CodeREADr, that event is a scan sent from a service you pick.
Action
What the Zap does once it has started: the step that writes, sends or updates something in an app for you.
Task
The unit Zapier bills. One task is one action your Zap completes successfully, and your plan counts those.
Polling vs instant
A polling trigger gets checked on a timer. An instant trigger is reported by the app itself the moment it happens. CodeREADr's is instant.
Filter
A step that lets the Zap carry on only when what arrived meets a condition you set, and stops it otherwise.
Connection
Your CodeREADr account linked to Zapier once, then reused by every step that talks to CodeREADr.
Multi-step Zap
Any Zap beyond one trigger and one action. A second action or a filter makes it one, and it then needs a paid plan.
Cost

What a CodeREADr Zap really costs

CodeREADr is not a premium app, so it works on the free plan. The scan trigger itself never costs a task.

  • Premium appNo, free plan works
  • Free plan100 tasks a month, two-step Zaps
  • Trigger cost0 tasks
  • FilterMakes the Zap multi-step (paid)

You pay in tasks, and only for actions that succeed. A scan logged to a spreadsheet: one task. Logged and posted in chat: two. A failed action is not counted at all, so a broken step costs nothing. The free plan gives 100 tasks a month and Zaps of two steps only, so add a filter and you are on a paid plan. The interval grid below concerns polling triggers; this one is instant, so it starts straight away on any plan.

Connect

Connect CodeREADr to Zapier in 3 steps

  1. 01

    Open your connections

In Zapier, go to the Apps page of your account and click + Add connection. You need a CodeREADr account first, plus access to any service or database you did not create yourself.

  2. 02

    Pick CodeREADr

Type CodeREADr in the search box of the dialog, select it, then confirm with Add connection. Zapier then opens a new tab so you can sign in to CodeREADr and finish the link.

  3. 03

    Sign in and allow access

Log in to CodeREADr in that tab and grant Zapier access to the account. The connection is saved once, and every CodeREADr step of every Zap you build reuses it.

First Zap

Your first Zap: log VIP check-ins to a sheet

GoalA conference organizer wants every VIP badge scanned at the entrance logged in Google Sheets, and nothing else.

  1. 01

    Build: start with the scan

Create a Zap, pick CodeREADr and the New Postback Receiver Scan event. Choose your connection, then the Service ID of the entrance service.

  2. 02

    Test the trigger

Scan a real badge, then run the test. Zapier shows what came back. Read it carefully: you will reuse one of those values in the filter and the sheet.

  3. 03

    Add the filter

From the plus icon, add Filter. Pick the value that marks VIP badges in the test, a text rule, and the value to match. Wrong rule type, and the filter never passes.

  4. 04

    Map the sheet

Add Google Sheets with Create Spreadsheet Row, choose the file and tab, then drop each scan value into its column. Test this step once too.

  5. 05

    Publish

Click Publish to switch the Zap on. With three steps it is multi-step, so it runs on a paid plan. Badges scanned before that moment are not picked up.

Triggers

The CodeREADr trigger

1 event starts a Zap when something happens in CodeREADr, and one of them is instant: the app calls Zapier straight away, whatever your plan.

1

New Postback Receiver Scan

Instant trigger

In Zapier“codeREADr will send the scan to Zapier when you set the hook URL as your codeREADr's Postback URL. Triggers when a scan to the url is made.”

Each time someone scans a code on the CodeREADr service you selected, the scan travels to Zapier and starts your Zap. You get the scan itself to work with, so the next steps can write it down, forward it or sort it.

How it fires
the app tells Zapier the moment it happens, so the Zap starts right away, whatever your plan
When to use it
you want a door check, an attendance tick or an asset count to show up in another tool while the line is still moving.
Watch out
the Service ID field is mandatory, and that service must keep the Zapier webhook as its one and only postback URL, or scans will not arrive where you expect.
Actions

The CodeREADr action

CodeREADr gives you 1 action. For each one: what it does for you, when to reach for it, and what to watch out for.

1

Add/Update Barcode Value

Action

In Zapier“Adds a new barcode value or updates one if it already exists.”

Writes a code into one of your CodeREADr databases: new if it is missing, refreshed if it already exists. No duplicate to clean up afterwards.

When to use it
a ticket sold or an asset registered in another app should be valid at the scanner without retyping it.
Watch out
Database and Barcode are required, and Validity only accepts 0 or 1.
When it breaks

When a CodeREADr Zap breaks

Zapier links no help article to this app, so what follows comes from its general rules plus the required fields of the two operations.

Most failures here are setup issues, not outages. Check these four before anything else, and keep the Zapier troubleshooting page handy for the rest.

  • Old scans never show up

A Zap only reacts to scans made after you publish it. Everything scanned before stays in CodeREADr, and moving that backlog is a separate job.
  • No scan arrives at all

The selected service needs the Zapier webhook as its only postback receiver. Check the Service ID you picked and the postback setting of that exact service.
  • A burst of scans is held back

After a bulk import or a migration, a trigger that suddenly returns a huge batch can be held back by Zapier's flood protection.
  • The barcode update is refused

Add/Update Barcode Value needs both a Database and a Barcode. Validity takes 0 or 1 only, so any other value mapped in there will not go through.

FAQ

CodeREADr Zapier integration: questions people ask

01Is the CodeREADr Zapier integration free?
Yes, you can start on the free plan, because Zapier does not class CodeREADr as a premium app. The free plan comes with 100 tasks a month and Zaps limited to two steps, one trigger and one action. That covers a scan sent straight to a sheet. The moment you add a filter or a second action, the Zap becomes multi-step and you need a paid plan. No price is quoted here on purpose: plan grids move too often to publish safely.
02How many tasks does a CodeREADr Zap use?
One task per action that succeeds, and nothing for the trigger. A scan that only creates a spreadsheet row costs one task. If the same scan also posts a chat message, that is two. A filter that stops the Zap means the actions after it never run, so nothing is billed for them. An action that fails is not counted either. Some apps and actions take more than one task on completion, so read your task history after the first real runs.
03Does CodeREADr send scans to Zapier in real time?
Yes. New Postback Receiver Scan is an instant trigger: CodeREADr reports each scan to Zapier as it happens, and the Zap starts at once. Because of that, the polling interval grid (15 minutes on Free, 2 on Professional, 1 on Team and Enterprise) does not apply here. Even on the free plan, the scan does not wait for a timer. In the editor, a Zap built on an instant trigger shows a lightning bolt, which is a quick way to confirm it.
04What do you need to connect CodeREADr to Zapier?
A CodeREADr account, plus access to every service or database you did not create yourself but want the Zap to touch. The connection itself happens from the Apps page in Zapier: add a connection, pick CodeREADr, sign in and grant access. Then, for the trigger, the CodeREADr service you select by Service ID must use the Zapier webhook as its only postback URL. For the action, you need a database to write into.
05Why does a CodeREADr barcode update fail?
Usually because a required field is empty or a value is out of range. Add/Update Barcode Value needs a Database and a Barcode every time. The optional Validity field only takes 0 or 1. If an earlier step maps text such as yes or no into Validity, the action will not go through. Run the action test with a real value and read what comes back before you publish. A failed action costs no task, but it also does nothing.
06What if the CodeREADr operation you need is not there?
Then Zapier alone will not do it, since the editor offers exactly one trigger and one action for CodeREADr. There is no search step, no polling trigger, and no action besides adding or updating a barcode value. Check whether the job can be split: the scan trigger can feed any other app with Zapier steps, and any app can feed the barcode action. If neither side fits, compare what the other automation platforms list for CodeREADr before building a workaround.
07Zapier, Make or n8n for CodeREADr?
Decide on criteria, not on a ranking. On Zapier, the facts are clear: the scan trigger is instant on every plan, the app is not premium, and the catalog holds one trigger and one action with no search. If those two operations cover the job and a free start matters, Zapier fits. If you need more operations than that, check each other platform's own CodeREADr list against the same criteria: which events, which actions, and what each run costs you.
