Overview

What the Cutt.ly Zapier integration is good for

Cutt.ly is a URL shortener with click tracking and link management. Connected to Zapier, it can start an automation each time someone shortens a link, and it lets your other apps create, edit and analyze Cutt.ly links on their own, so the marketing team stops doing it by hand.

Campaign tracking that never gets skipped. Get Last Urls picks up each new short link and Change UTM sets its campaign source, so your analytics show where every click came from.

Links that end on time. URL Expiration makes a link stop after a date or a number of clicks and sends late visitors to a URL you choose, which suits a flash sale or a limited signup.

Short links made where the content lives. Shorten Url turns any address into a Cutt.ly link the moment another tool needs one, for a newsletter or a social post.

What Zapier does not do here: the only trigger, Get Last Urls, is a polling trigger, checked every 15 minutes on the free plan, and it reacts to new links, not to clicks. Click numbers come from the Analytics action, which you run as a step. There is no search either. Several actions also depend on your Cutt.ly plan, starting with the user domain option, available from the Single plan.

Vocabulary

The Zapier words behind this page

Seven terms come up again and again below. One line each, in plain English.

Zap
The automation you build on Zapier: one trigger, then one or more actions that run each time the trigger event happens.
Trigger
The event in an app that starts the Zap, here a newly shortened link in Cutt.ly. Once the Zap is on, Zapier waits for it.
Action
What the Zap does once started: the step that writes, changes or sends something for you, like setting a UTM tag.
Task
The unit Zapier bills: one action the Zap completes successfully. Your plan's allowance is a count of those.
Polling vs instant
A polling trigger is checked by Zapier on a timer; an instant one is reported by the app as it happens. Cutt.ly's trigger polls.
Filter
A step that lets the Zap continue only when the data that arrived meets your condition, and stops it otherwise.
Multi-step Zap
Any Zap beyond one trigger and one action. A filter or a second action makes one, and it then needs a paid plan.
Cost

What Cutt.ly costs you in Zapier tasks

Cutt.ly is not a premium app, so it runs on the free plan. Your bill depends on the actions; your delay depends on the plan's check interval.

  • Premium appNo, available on the free plan
  • Cutt.ly trigger1, polling
  • Free plan100 tasks per month, two-step Zaps
  • Each successful action1 task

The trigger never costs a task, and Zapier checking Cutt.ly for new links is free too. Each action that succeeds, one UTM changed or one link shortened, counts as one task; one that fails is not counted. The free plan gives 100 tasks a month and two-step Zaps only, with a check every 15 minutes. Add a filter, or chain Change Tag and Change UTM, and the Zap becomes multi-step, which needs a paid plan. Some Cutt.ly options, such as the user domain, also depend on your Cutt.ly plan.

    Sign in and grant access

Sign in to Cutt.ly in the tab that opens and allow Zapier to use the account. From then on, the trigger and every Cutt.ly action can pick this connection.

First Zap

Your first Zap: tag every shop link for your campaigns

GoalWhen someone shortens a link to your online shop in Cutt.ly, the Zap sets its campaign source so the clicks show up in your analytics.

  1. 01

Build: start on Get Last Urls

Click Build, pick Cutt.ly and Get Last Urls as the trigger, then your connection. Zapier checks it on a timer, every 15 minutes on Free.

  2. 02

    Test on real links

Run Test: Zapier brings back the three most recent short links of the account. Choose one that points to your shop for the next steps.

  3. 03

    Keep the shop links only

Add a Filter from the plus icon: the field to check, a text rule, and your shop's address as the value. Then click Configure & test.

  4. 04

    Set the UTM

Add Change UTM, map the short link into URL and type the Campaign Source, both required. Use the same source name your analytics already expect.

  5. 05

    Test, then Publish

Test the steps and read what came back. With a filter, this Zap is multi-step and needs a paid plan. Click Publish to switch it on.

Triggers

The Cutt.ly trigger

1 event starts a Zap when something happens in Cutt.ly. Zapier checks for them at the interval your plan allows.

1

Get Last Urls

Polling trigger

In Zapier“Get last shortened URLs”

Watches the links shortened in your Cutt.ly account and starts the Zap for each new one. It is the only way for something happening in Cutt.ly to set off a Zap, so every Cutt.ly automation that starts in Cutt.ly starts here.

How it fires
Zapier goes and looks at regular intervals, and how often depends on your plan: every 15 minutes on the free one
When to use it
a content team that wants each new short link logged, tagged and given a UTM source without a checklist.
Watch out
it reacts to new links, not to clicks, and the links shortened before the Zap was switched on are never picked up.
Actions

The 8 Cutt.ly actions

Cutt.ly gives you 8 actions. For each one: what it does for you, when to reach for it, and what to watch out for.

1

Delete

Action

In Zapier“Delete your short URL”

Removes a short link from your Cutt.ly account. It needs the short URL and the user domain value.

When to use it
a promotion is cancelled in your project tool and its link should disappear with it.
Watch out
run it on a test link first, to check the Zap targets the right one.
2

URL Expiration

Action

In Zapier“Toggle URL expiration for your short URL”

Makes a short link expire after a date or a number of clicks, then sends visitors to a fallback URL. It can count only unique clicks if you prefer.

When to use it
a webinar replay link should stop working once the replay window closes.
Watch out
all six of its fields are required.
3

Shorten Url

Action

In Zapier“Put an url in this parameter to shorten it”

Turns a long address into a Cutt.ly short link. The URL is the only required field; skipping the page title lookup needs a Team Enterprise plan, public stats a Single plan.

When to use it
each new blog post needs a short link for social media.
Watch out
inside a Zap started by Get Last Urls, it creates a new link that starts the Zap again.
4

Change Source URL

Action

In Zapier“Change source URL of your short URL”

Points an existing short link to a new destination, so printed or shared links keep working when the page moves. What you can change depends on your Cutt.ly plan.

When to use it
a product page is replaced in your shop and the old short link must follow.
5

Analytics

Action

In Zapier“Get statistic information about your shortened URL”

Fetches the click statistics of a shortened link, the only required field, and hands them to the next steps of the Zap.

When to use it
a marketing manager who wants a link's numbers copied into a report row when a campaign is marked as finished in another tool.
6

Change Tag

Action

In Zapier“Set tag for your short URL”

Sets a tag on one of your short links, which keeps a crowded Cutt.ly account sorted by client, campaign or channel.

When to use it
an agency labels each new link with the client it belongs to.
Watch out
short URL and user domain are both required.
7

Unique Clicks

Action

In Zapier“Toggle unique clicks for your short URL”

Switches unique click counting on or off for a link. On the Single plan the uniqueness window is 15 minutes; Team plans can set it from 15 to 1440 minutes.

When to use it
a contest link where one person clicking again and again within the window should count once.
8

Change UTM

Action

In Zapier“Change your shortened URL's UTM”

Edits the UTM settings of a short link, with the link and the Campaign Source as required fields. Your analytics then know which campaign brought each visit.

When to use it
every link the sales team shortens should carry the same source name.
When it breaks

When the Cutt.ly Zap breaks

Zapier links no help article to Cutt.ly, so the known failure points are the general ones, and the first one bites hard on a link shortener.

One polling trigger and eight actions that write into the same account it watches: the risks are loops, gaps and batches. Go through these four cases before you publish, and if a Zap fails for another reason, the Zapier troubleshooting page is where to go next.

  • The Zap that shortens itself

A Zap started by Get Last Urls that runs Shorten Url creates a new short link, which the trigger picks up on the next check, and so on until the tasks run out.
  • Old links stay untouched

A Zap only reacts to links shortened after it is switched on. The links already in Cutt.ly never get their UTM or tag; updating them is a separate job.
  • A bulk batch gets held back

Shorten a large batch of links at once and the next check returns a huge pile. Zapier's flood protection can hold that batch back.
  • A link never runs twice

Zapier remembers the links it has already seen on a polling trigger, so the same short link does not start the Zap a second time.

FAQ

Cutt.ly Zapier integration: questions people ask

01Is the Cutt.ly Zapier integration free?
Yes on the Zapier side: Cutt.ly is not a premium app, so it works on the free plan. That plan gives you 100 tasks a month, two-step Zaps only, and a check every 15 minutes. Get Last Urls then Change UTM fits. Add a filter or a second action and the Zap becomes multi-step, which needs a paid plan. Some options inside the actions, like the user domain, depend on your Cutt.ly plan rather than on Zapier.
02How many tasks does a Cutt.ly Zap use?
One task per action that succeeds, nothing for the trigger, and nothing for Zapier checking Cutt.ly for new links. A Zap that sets a UTM on each new link uses one task per link. Add Change Tag and it is two tasks per link. An action that fails is not counted. The real risk is a loop: Shorten Url inside a Zap started by Get Last Urls makes new links that restart the Zap and drain the allowance.
03Does Cutt.ly work in real time with Zapier?
No. Get Last Urls is a polling trigger: Zapier asks Cutt.ly for its latest links at a fixed interval and keeps only the ones it has not seen. That is every 15 minutes on Free, every 2 minutes on Professional and every minute on Team and Enterprise. Paid plans can also change how often it checks, and a check can be run by hand from the editor. Once the Zap starts, the actions run straight away.
04What does it take to connect Cutt.ly to Zapier?
An existing Cutt.ly account, plus access to the links the Zap will edit. In Zapier, open Apps, click + Add connection, search for Cutt.ly and click Add connection, then sign in to Cutt.ly in the tab that opens and grant access. Before building, look at the user domain field required by most actions: set to 1, it uses your account's own domain, which Cutt.ly offers from its Single plan. Check that your plan includes it before you map the field.
05Can a Cutt.ly Zap react to clicks?
Not directly. The only trigger, Get Last Urls, fires on newly shortened links, not on clicks. Click data comes from the Analytics action, which reads the statistics of one shortened link when the Zap runs it. So a Zap can fetch the numbers at a moment you choose, for instance when a campaign closes in another tool, but it cannot start because a link reached a click count. URL Expiration is the closest thing: it stops a link after a number of clicks.
06What if the Cutt.ly action you need is not in Zapier?
The Zapier list is closed: 1 trigger and 8 actions, all about short links, their settings and their stats. If what you have in mind is missing, no editor setting will reveal it. First check whether an existing action covers the need, such as Change Source URL instead of deleting and recreating a link. Otherwise compare with the same app on another automation platform, where the list of operations differs.
07Zapier, Make or n8n for Cutt.ly?
It depends on your criteria, not on a ranking. On Zapier the facts are known: Cutt.ly works on the free plan, its single trigger polls every 15 minutes on Free, each successful action costs one task, and a filter or a second action needs a paid plan. For the two other platforms, ask the same questions: which Cutt.ly operations they offer, how fast they see new links, and how they count usage. Choose on that comparison.
