Giphy Zapier integrationAutomate Giphy with Zapier.
The Giphy Zapier integration is a single search step, not a full toolkit. Zapier lists 0 triggers, 0 actions and 1 search for Giphy: Find GIF. Another app starts the Zap, Giphy picks a random GIF for a keyword, and a third app posts it.

What the Giphy Zapier integration actually does
Connecting Giphy to Zapier gives you exactly one thing: a step that fetches a random GIF matching the keyword you hand it. Giphy cannot start a Zap and cannot write anything anywhere. It sits in the middle, after some other app has started the run and before some other app uses the result.
That narrow scope still covers a few useful jobs. Each one is the same Find GIF search with a different keyword source.
A celebration post in a team channel. A new row lands in a sales tracker, the Zap reads the product name or the rep's word of choice, Find GIF looks it up, and the chat message goes out with a GIF attached instead of plain text.
A lighter welcome message. A new signup in your form tool or CRM sends a greeting, and the keyword field is a fixed word like "welcome". Since the result is random, two newcomers rarely see the same image.
A themed GIF per event type. Map the event name or a status into the Search box, so a "shipped" status pulls a different picture from a "bug fixed" status, all in one Zap.
Now the limits, because they decide whether this is worth setting up. Giphy on Zapier has no trigger: nothing in your Giphy account can start a Zap. It has no action either, so no upload, no favorite, no collection. The only control you have is the keyword, and the GIF that comes back is random, so you cannot approve a specific one in advance. And because a search step makes the Zap multi-step, every working Giphy Zap needs a paid Zapier plan.
If you are weighing tools, the Giphy Make integration page covers the same app on Make, and the Make vs Zapier comparison puts the two side by side.
Zapier vocabulary in one minute
Seven words come back on every Zapier page. Here is what each one means in plain terms.
- Zap
- The automation you build on Zapier: one trigger, then one or more steps that run each time that trigger event happens.
- Trigger
- The event in an app that kicks off the Zap. Once the Zap is switched on, Zapier keeps waiting for that event to show up.
- Action
- What the Zap does after it starts: the step that writes, sends or moves something for you, in Slack, Gmail or any other app.
- Task
- The unit Zapier bills. One task is one action your Zap completes successfully, and the number on your plan counts those.
- Polling vs instant
- A polling trigger is checked by Zapier on a timer. An instant trigger is reported by the app itself the moment the event happens.
- Filter
- A step that lets the Zap carry on only when the incoming data meets the condition you set. Otherwise the run stops right there.
- Search step
- A step that looks up something that already exists in an app, so later steps can use it. Find GIF is one of these.
What a Giphy Zap really costs
The trigger costs nothing, and neither do Zapier's checks for new data. Only an action that completes successfully is counted as a task. An action that fails is not counted.
- Premium appNo
- Free plan100 tasks a month, two-step Zaps only
- Find GIF on the free planNot usable: a search makes the Zap multi-step
The catch sits elsewhere. The free plan gives you 100 tasks a month and unlimited Zaps, but each Zap is capped at two steps: one trigger, one action. A search counts as an extra step and turns the Zap into a multi-step Zap, which needs a paid plan. Giphy itself is not a premium app, yet a Zap that only finds a GIF and does nothing with it is pointless, so in practice Giphy means a paid plan. Budget one task per run for the final step.
Connect your Giphy account to Zapier
- 01
Open the Apps page
In your Zapier account, go to Apps and click + Add connection. All you need beforehand is a Giphy account; Zapier stores the link once and reuses it in every Zap that calls Giphy.
- 02
Pick Giphy in the dialog
Type Giphy into the search box of the dialog, select it, then click Add connection. A new tab opens on the Giphy side, which is where the actual sign-in happens.
- 03
Sign in and grant access
Log in to Giphy in that tab and allow Zapier to use the account. Back in Zapier, the connection now appears in the list, ready to be chosen when you add the Find GIF step.
Your first Giphy Zap, step by step
GoalPost a Slack message with a matching GIF every time a new deal row is added to a Google Sheets tracker.
- 01
Build: start on the sheet
Create a Zap and pick Google Sheets with New Spreadsheet Row as the event that starts it. Giphy cannot be the first step, since it has no trigger of its own.
- 02
Test the trigger
Run the trigger test. Zapier brings back the three most recent rows of the connected sheet, so you pick a real one and map fields from actual data, not from guesses.
- 03
Add Find GIF
Add a step, choose Giphy, then Find GIF under the SEARCH heading of the Action event list. In Search, type a fixed word or map a column such as the product name.
- 04
Test the search, then add Slack
Test Find GIF and read what comes back. Then add Slack's Send Channel Message and drop the GIF value you spotted in the test result into the message text.
- 05
Publish
Test the Slack step once, check the message in the channel, then click Publish to switch the Zap on. From then on, each new row produces one post.
The Giphy search on Zapier
1 search step looks for data that already exists in Giphy, so a later step can use it.
A search step does not change anything in Giphy. It looks something up and passes the result to the steps that follow, which is how a Zap gets a value no earlier step carried. Three settings decide what happens when the search comes back empty or crowded.
Find GIF
SearchIn Zapier“Finds a random GIF that matches your specified keyword(s).”
Give it one or more keywords and Giphy returns a random GIF that fits them, ready to drop into a message or an email in the next step.
The three settings every search exposes
- Successful if no search results are found?Left on its default, a search that finds nothing stops the Zap there and skips the steps that depended on it. Switched on, the Zap carries on without a GIF.
- Create X if it doesn't exist yet? This box turns a search into find-or-create on some apps. Giphy offers no such variant, so you will not see it on Find GIF.
- If multiple search results are found?Three ways out when several items match: keep the first, which is the default, stop the Zap, or pass all of them on at once.
When a Giphy Zap breaks
Zapier attaches no help article to Giphy, so there is no documented app-specific error to list. What breaks is the general behavior of Zaps, and a few traps hit a search-only app harder than most.
Read these four before you publish. Most of them show up only once the Zap is live and running on real data, which is why it pays to know them up front.
No backlog, ever
A Zap reacts only to what happens after you switch it on. Rows, signups or events that already existed are ignored, so past deals never get their GIF.The Zap that feeds itself
If the last step writes back into the place the trigger watches, each run starts a new one. The loop burns through your task count fast.A sudden flood is held back
When the trigger app returns a huge batch at once, after a bulk import for instance, Zapier's flood protection can hold those items back instead of firing them all.Same item, one run
On a polling trigger, Zapier remembers what it has already seen, so the same row does not start the Zap twice.
