Overview

What the HTML/CSS to Image Zapier integration is for

HTML/CSS to Image renders code or a web page as a picture (jpg, png or webp), with the same look Chrome would give it. Plugged into Zapier, it becomes a middle step: some other app hands it content, it hands back an image, and the next step ships that image wherever it needs to go.

Three things people actually build with it. A shareable card: a form answer or a new deal fills an HTML template, and Create Image turns it into a visual ready for a chat channel or a newsletter. A page capture: Create Image From a URL takes the address of a public page and returns a screenshot, handy to archive a landing page or a price list as it looked that day. A full-length snapshot: both actions have a Full Screen option that grabs the whole height of the page, not just the top of it.

Now the limits, because they shape every Zap you'll build. The app has no trigger, so nothing in HTML/CSS to Image can start the automation; the first step always belongs to another tool. It has no search either, so a Zap can't look up an image made last week. And with one trigger plus two steps, you're past the free plan's two-step ceiling quickly (more on that in the cost block).

If you're still weighing tools, the Zapier review and the Make vs Zapier comparison are the next two reads.

Vocabulary

Zapier vocabulary in one minute

Eight words you'll meet on every screen. Each one is explained once here, then used as is.

Zap
A finished automation on Zapier. Something happens in one app, and the steps you lined up behind it run, every single time.
Trigger
The event that starts a Zap. Once the Zap is on, Zapier waits for it. HTML/CSS to Image has none, so another app supplies it.
Action
Any step after the start that produces a result for you. Both HTML/CSS to Image operations are actions: each one hands back a picture.
Task
The unit Zapier bills. One task equals one action that finished successfully; your plan's monthly allowance counts those.
Polling vs instant
A polling trigger is checked on a timer set by your plan. An instant trigger is pushed by the app the moment the event happens.
Filter
A step that lets the Zap continue only when the incoming data meets your condition, and quietly stops it otherwise.
Connection
Your account on an app, linked to Zapier once and then reused by every step that talks to that app.
Multi-step Zap
Any Zap with more than one trigger and one action. A second action, a filter or a search makes it one, and it needs a paid plan.
Cost

What a rendered image really costs

Short version: you pay per image produced, never per check.

  • Trigger checksFree, whatever the frequency
  • One rendered image1 task when it succeeds
  • Free plan100 tasks a month, two-step Zaps
  • Premium appNo, available on Free

The trigger in the other app never costs a task, however often Zapier looks for new items. Each successful run of Create Image or Create Image From a URL counts as one task, and a failed render isn't billed. The free plan gives 100 tasks a month, unlimited Zaps and a check every 15 minutes on polling triggers. The catch: free Zaps stop at two steps. Add a third step to send the image somewhere, or a filter, and you need a paid plan. HTML/CSS to Image isn't a premium app, so the free plan accepts it.

Connect

Connect your HTML/CSS to Image account

  1. 01

    Open the Apps page

In your Zapier account, go to Apps and click + Add connection. You need an existing HTML/CSS to Image account before you start; Zapier doesn't create one for you.

  2. 02

Find the app and launch the link

Type HTML/CSS to Image in the search box of the dialog, select it, then click Add connection. Zapier then opens a new tab where you sign in to the app.

  3. 03

    Grant access

Approve the access request. The connection now shows up in your list, and every future step using HTML/CSS to Image picks it from a menu instead of asking you to log in again.

First Zap

Your first Zap: a Slack-ready card from each Typeform answer

GoalEach new Typeform entry fills an HTML template, gets rendered as an image, and lands in a Slack channel.

  1. 01

    Build: pick the starting event

Create a Zap and choose Typeform with New Entry as the trigger. Connect the form account, then pick the form that collects the answers you want on the card.

  2. 02

    Test the trigger

Run the test. Zapier brings back the three most recent entries, so you map fields against a real answer instead of an empty placeholder.

  3. 03

    Add Create Image

Add HTML/CSS to Image as the next step and choose Create Image. Paste your template in the HTML field, then drop the Typeform answers into it where the text should appear.

  4. 04

    Test the render

Run the step once and open what comes back. Check the layout before going further; a broken tag shows up here, not after publishing. Long template? Switch on Full Screen.

  5. 05

Send it to Slack, then publish

Add Slack and pick the channel, using what the render step returned in the message. Three steps make this a multi-step Zap, so it needs a paid plan. Test, then click Publish.

Actions

The 2 HTML/CSS to Image actions

HTML/CSS to Image gives you 2 actions. For each one: what it does for you, when to reach for it, and what to watch out for.

1

Create Image

Action

In Zapier“Generates an image from HTML/CSS”

Feed it HTML and CSS, and it returns that markup drawn as a picture. Your template stays the same; only the values mapped from earlier steps change on each run.

When to use it
you want a branded quote, badge or certificate generated from data another app just sent.
Watch out
the HTML field is mandatory, and only Full Screen guarantees the full height of a long template.
2

Create Image From a URL

Action

In Zapier“Generates an image from a URL”

Give it the address of a web page and it hands back a screenshot of that page. No template to write: the page itself is the design.

When to use it
you need a visual record of a public page, such as a competitor's pricing table, every time a row lands in your tracking sheet.
Watch out
the URL must be complete and public, and it overrides any HTML you might also pass.
When it breaks

When an HTML/CSS to Image Zap breaks

Zapier attaches no help article to this app and lists no limit of its own. The failures below come from how Zaps behave everywhere.

Since HTML/CSS to Image always sits after another app's trigger, most surprises start upstream. Read these before you switch the Zap on; the Zapier troubleshooting page goes further when a run fails anyway.

  • Old records never get rendered

A Zap only reacts to events after it's published. Form answers already sitting in Typeform won't become images; rendering them means a one-off run of its own.
  • The Zap that feeds itself

If your last step adds a row to the same sheet your trigger watches, every new row starts the Zap again. Each loop renders another image and eats a task.
  • A bulk import gets held back

When the trigger suddenly returns a huge batch, after an import or a migration, Zapier's flood protection can pause it instead of firing hundreds of renders at once.
  • Duplicates are filtered for you

On a polling trigger, Zapier remembers what it has already seen, so the same entry won't start the Zap twice and you won't pay for the same image again.

FAQ

HTML/CSS to Image Zapier integration: FAQ

01Is the HTML/CSS to Image Zapier integration free?
Yes, on the Zapier side it works from the free plan, because HTML/CSS to Image is not a premium app. The free plan allows 100 tasks a month and unlimited Zaps. The real limit is shape: a free Zap holds one trigger and one action. Since this app always needs a trigger from another tool, a Zap that also sends the image somewhere has three steps and requires a paid plan.
02How many tasks does one image use?
One task per image that renders successfully. The trigger in the other app costs nothing, and neither do Zapier's checks for new items. A render that fails isn't billed. Every extra action counts on its own, though: a Zap that creates an image and then posts it in a chat app uses two tasks per run, so plan your monthly allowance around that number. Such a Zap is multi-step, so it already sits on a paid plan.
03Does HTML/CSS to Image work in real time?
It depends entirely on the app that starts the Zap, because HTML/CSS to Image has no trigger of its own. If that first app offers an instant trigger, the render runs as soon as the event happens, whatever your plan. If its trigger is polled, Zapier checks on a timer: every 15 minutes on Free, every 2 on Professional, every minute on Team and Enterprise. An instant trigger shows a lightning bolt in the editor, so you can tell at a glance.
04What does it take to connect HTML/CSS to Image to Zapier?
An existing HTML/CSS to Image account, plus a Zapier account. Zapier won't create the app account for you, so sign up first. From the Apps page you click Add connection, search the app, sign in in the tab that opens and grant access. After that, the connection is reused by every step that calls the app. If the Zap screenshots pages you don't own, they still need to be reachable publicly.
05Why is the bottom of the rendered image cut off?
Because Full Screen wasn't switched on. Without it, the render stops at the visible area of the page, so long content gets cropped. Both actions, Create Image and Create Image From a URL, offer the Full Screen option, which captures the entire height instead. Turn it on, rerun the test step, and check the result before you publish the Zap. It matters most for long templates and for screenshots of article pages.
06What if the operation you need doesn't exist?
Then the Zapier app can't do it, since it only offers two actions: an image from HTML, or an image from a URL. There is no trigger and no search, so a Zap can't start when an image is made or look one up later. Starting from another app's trigger covers most cases; anything beyond that means working outside this integration. Check the two available actions before designing the Zap, not after.
07Zapier, Make or n8n for HTML/CSS to Image?
Judge on criteria, not on reputation. On Zapier the app is not premium, offers two actions, and needs a trigger from another tool, which makes most useful Zaps multi-step and therefore paid. Check the same points on any other platform before choosing: which operations exist, how a render is billed, and whether a three-step flow fits the plan you're on. Those plain answers should weigh more in the decision than any brand name.
