Overview

What the AWeber Zapier integration actually does

It links your AWeber account to Zapier so that a new subscriber, list or custom field can start an automation, and so that Zapier can add, update or unsubscribe people for you. You set the rule once; Zapier runs it every time the event shows up in your account.

Three outcomes cover most of what people build. A contact copied to the right list: New Subscriber watches one list and Create Subscriber drops the person into another, say from a webinar list into a customer onboarding sequence. A clean unsubscribe: Unsubscribe Email removes an address from a chosen list when something elsewhere says they should stop getting those emails. A contact record that stays current: Find Subscriber locates the person, then Update Subscriber writes the new details onto that same record.

What Zapier does not do here matters just as much. None of the four AWeber triggers is instant: Zapier checks your account on a timer, so a new subscriber shows up in your Zap after the next check, not the second they sign up. There is also no trigger for opens, clicks or unsubscribes, and no action that sends a broadcast. If your plan relies on one of those, this integration will not cover it.

If you are weighing tools, the same app has an AWeber Make integration page, and the Make vs Zapier comparison is there if you want to weigh the two.

Vocabulary

Zapier vocabulary in one minute

Eight words come back on every line of this page. Here is what each one means in plain terms.

Zap
The automation you build: one trigger, then one or more actions that run each time that trigger event happens.
Trigger
The event in an app that starts the Zap. Once the Zap is on, Zapier sits and waits for that event.
Action
What the Zap does after it starts: the step that writes, sends or moves something on your behalf.
Task
The unit Zapier bills. One task is one action your Zap completes successfully, and your plan counts those.
Polling trigger
A trigger Zapier checks on a timer. It asks the app for new items at a set interval and keeps only what it has not seen.
Instant trigger
A trigger the app reports by itself: it calls Zapier the moment the event happens, so nothing waits for a check.
Filter
A step that lets the Zap continue only when what arrived meets your condition, and stops it otherwise.
Search step
A step that looks up something already in an app, so the steps after it can use what it found.
Cost

What an AWeber Zap really costs

Zapier counts tasks, and only successful actions are tasks. The trigger is free, and so is every check Zapier runs on your AWeber account while it waits.

  • Free plan100 tasks a month, unlimited Zaps
  • Zap size on freeTwo steps: one trigger, one action
  • Trigger checksNever billed
  • Failed actionNot counted
  • AWeber on ZapierNot a premium app

A Zap that copies each new subscriber to a second list costs one task per person. Add a filter or a search step and it becomes a multi-step Zap, which needs a paid plan: the free plan stops at two steps, one trigger and one action. An action that fails is not counted. AWeber is not a premium app, so it works on the free plan. Every action that succeeds counts on its own: a Zap with three actions spends three times what a one-action Zap spends.

Connect

Connect AWeber to Zapier in three steps

  1. 01

    Open the Apps page

In your Zapier account, go to Apps and click + Add connection. A connection is your AWeber account linked to Zapier once, then reused by every step that touches AWeber.

  2. 02

Pick AWeber and start the link

Search for AWeber by name in the dialog, select it, then click Add connection. You need an AWeber account of your own, plus access to any list you do not own but want the Zap to use.

  3. 03

    Sign in and grant access

Sign in to AWeber in the tab that opens and allow Zapier to use the account. From then on, every AWeber step you add in any Zap reuses this same connection.

First Zap

Your first AWeber Zap: from webinar list to customer list

GoalEach outside person who joins your webinar list lands on your onboarding list, while your colleagues' test sign-ups stay out, without you exporting anything.

  1. 01

    Build: choose the trigger

Start a new Zap, pick AWeber and the New Subscriber event. Choose the account, then the webinar list the Zap should watch.

  2. 02

    Test the trigger

Run the test. Zapier brings back the three most recent subscribers of that list, so you can map fields using a real person rather than an empty template.

  3. 03

    Add the filter

Click the plus icon, add Filter and set the email field, a text rule that excludes your company domain, and that domain as the value. Use a text rule here: a number rule on an email never passes. The filter makes this a multi-step Zap, so it needs a paid plan.

  4. 04

    Add Create Subscriber

Add AWeber again with Create Subscriber, pick the account and the onboarding list, then map the email from the trigger. Keep the target list different from the one the trigger watches.

  5. 05

    Test, then Publish

Test the action once and check the person appears on the onboarding list in AWeber. Then click Publish to switch the Zap on. It only reacts to people who join after that moment.

Triggers

AWeber triggers in Zapier

4 events start a Zap when something happens in AWeber. Zapier checks for them at the interval your plan allows.

1

New Account

Polling trigger

In Zapier“Triggers when a new account is added.”

Starts the Zap when a new account is added on the AWeber side. It suits agencies or teams that handle several AWeber accounts and want to log each new one somewhere, or kick off a setup routine for it.

How it fires
Zapier goes and looks at regular intervals, and how often depends on your plan: every 15 minutes on the free one.
When to use it
a consultant who manages newsletters for several clients wants each newly added account recorded in their project tracker.
Watch out
an account added before the Zap was published is never picked up.
2

New Field

Polling trigger

In Zapier“Triggers when a new custom field is added to a list.”

Fires when someone adds a custom field to one of your lists. Custom fields are the extra columns on a subscriber, like a company name or a plan, so this trigger tells the rest of your setup that the shape of your data just changed.

How it fires
Zapier goes and looks at regular intervals, and how often depends on your plan: every 15 minutes on the free one.
When to use it
a marketing ops lead wants a heads-up whenever a teammate creates a field, so forms and other Zaps get updated to fill it.
Watch out
a field added before the Zap was published is never picked up.
3

New List

Polling trigger

In Zapier“Triggers when a new list is added to an account.”

Reacts each time a list is created in the chosen AWeber account. Useful when every new list should come with its own paperwork elsewhere: a row in a planning sheet, a task for whoever writes the welcome email, a note to the sales team.

How it fires
Zapier goes and looks at regular intervals, and how often depends on your plan: every 15 minutes on the free one.
When to use it
a course creator opens a new list for each cohort and wants the matching checklist created automatically.
Watch out
the Account field is required, so the trigger only watches the one account you select.
4

New Subscriber

Polling trigger

In Zapier“Triggers when a new subscriber is added to a list.”

Picks up each person added to a given list. This is the starting point for most AWeber Zaps: copying a contact to a CRM, tagging them elsewhere, or moving them into a second list.

How it fires
Zapier goes and looks at regular intervals, and how often depends on your plan: every 15 minutes on the free one.
When to use it
a SaaS founder wants every trial sign-up on the product list pushed to the sales pipeline.
Watch out
both Account and List are required, and the list menu only shows up after you choose the account.
Actions

AWeber actions in Zapier

AWeber gives you 3 actions. For each one: what it does for you, when to reach for it, and what to watch out for.

1

Unsubscribe Email

Action

In Zapier“Unsubscribes an email address from a list of your choosing.”

Takes an email address off one list you choose. The person stays on any other list, which lets you stop a prospect sequence the moment they become a customer without cutting them off entirely.

When to use it
a deal is marked as won in your CRM and the prospect follow-up list should stop mailing them.
Watch out
Account, List and Subscriber are all required.
2

Create Subscriber

Action

In Zapier“Creates a new subscriber.”

Adds a person to the AWeber list of your choice, using details carried over from an earlier step. It is the action behind every "new lead elsewhere, new contact in AWeber" Zap.

When to use it
a checkout or form tool records a buyer and you want them on your customer newsletter.
Watch out
pick the account first; the List field stays empty until you do.
3

Update Subscriber

Action

In Zapier“Update a subscriber.”

Writes new details onto someone who is already in AWeber, instead of creating a second record for them. Pair it with Find Subscriber so the Zap knows exactly which person to change.

When to use it
a customer changes plan in your billing tool and the matching custom field in AWeber should follow.
Searches

AWeber searches in Zapier

2 search steps look for data that already exists in AWeber, so a later step can use it.

AWeber searches sit at the bottom of the Action event list, under SEARCH. They fetch an existing subscriber or list so the next step can use it. Some action fields also offer + Add search step, which inserts the search right before them and wires the result in. Three settings decide what happens when the result is not a single clean match.

1

Find Subscriber

SearchFind or create

In Zapier“Find a subscriber by email or name.”

Looks up a person by email or name inside one list, so a later step can update or remove the right record. In the editor you will also see Find or Create Subscriber: it is this same search with the create box ticked, not a separate operation.

When to use it
before Update Subscriber, to target an existing contact.
Watch out
Account and List are required, so it only searches the list you name.
2

Find a List

Search

In Zapier“Find a list by name.”

Returns an AWeber list from its name. Handy when the list to use changes from one run to the next, for example when the name arrives from a form or a spreadsheet instead of being fixed in the Zap.

When to use it
each event has its own list and the event name comes from the trigger.
Watch out
Account and List Name are both required.

The three settings every search exposes

  1. Successful if no search results are found?
Left at its default, a search that finds nothing stops the Zap and skips the steps that depend on it. Switch it on and the Zap carries on empty-handed.
  2. Create X if it doesn't exist yet?
Ticking this box turns the search into a find-or-create: the setting above disappears and Zapier asks for the fields needed to create the missing item.
  3. If multiple search results are found?
Three ways out when several items match: keep the first one, which is the default, stop the Zap, or pass all of them on at once.
When it breaks

When an AWeber Zap breaks

Zapier attaches no AWeber-specific help article and no documented rate limit to this app. What goes wrong comes from how Zaps work in general.

Four situations account for the surprises. Each one has a simple fix once you know it exists; if yours is none of them, see Zapier troubleshooting.

  • Your existing subscribers are ignored

A Zap only reacts to what happens after you publish it. People already on the list stay where they are; moving that backlog is a separate job.
  • The Zap keeps setting itself off

If Create Subscriber writes into the very list New Subscriber watches, each new contact starts the Zap again and the task count climbs fast. Keep two different lists.
  • A big import gets held back

After a bulk import into a watched list, the trigger suddenly returns a huge batch. Zapier's flood protection can hold it back instead of running every item.
  • Nobody comes through twice

Zapier remembers what a polling trigger has already seen, so the same subscriber does not start the Zap twice.

FAQ

AWeber Zapier integration: common questions

01Is the AWeber Zapier integration free?
Yes, as long as your Zap stays at two steps. AWeber is not a premium app, so the free plan accepts it, with 100 tasks a month and unlimited Zaps. The catch is the shape of the Zap: the free plan allows one trigger and one action, nothing more. Adding a filter, a search such as Find Subscriber, or a second action turns it into a multi-step Zap, and that needs a paid plan.
02How many tasks does an AWeber Zap use?
One task per action that succeeds, and nothing for the trigger. Zapier can check your lists as often as your plan allows without billing a single task for it. A Zap that runs Create Subscriber for each new contact costs one task per person. A Zap that runs Find Subscriber and then Update Subscriber has two steps after the trigger, and each one that completes is counted. An action that fails is not counted against your plan.
03Does AWeber trigger Zapier in real time?
No. All four AWeber triggers are polling triggers: Zapier asks your account for new items at a fixed interval. On the free plan that interval is 15 minutes, on Professional it is 2 minutes, and on Team and Enterprise it is 1 minute. On paid plans you can also change the interval and run a check by hand from the editor. The type is set by AWeber's own API, so no setting in Zapier makes these triggers instant.
04What does it take to connect AWeber to Zapier?
An AWeber account you can sign in to, plus access to any list you do not own but want the Zap to use. The connection goes through the Apps page of Zapier: click + Add connection, pick AWeber, sign in in the tab that opens and grant access. Once it is done, every AWeber step reuses that connection. Remember that most AWeber steps ask for the account before they show your lists.
05Why is the List field empty in an AWeber step?
Because no account is selected yet. New Subscriber, Create Subscriber, Unsubscribe Email and Find Subscriber all require both an Account and a List, and the list menu only loads once the account is chosen. Pick the account in the step first, then open the List field again. If your list still does not show, check that your AWeber login has access to it: the connection only sees what that account can see.
06What if the AWeber operation that fits the need does not exist in Zapier?
Then the Zap cannot do it directly, and it is worth checking before you build. Zapier lists 4 triggers, 3 actions and 2 searches for AWeber, with no trigger on opens or clicks and no action that sends a broadcast. You can sometimes get close by chaining what exists, for example Find Subscriber then Update Subscriber. If the gap is central to the project, another automation tool or a direct API approach may fit better, and that choice depends on the team that will maintain it.
07Zapier, Make or n8n for AWeber?
It depends on your criteria rather than on a winner. On Zapier, AWeber is not a premium app, so it works on the free plan, but its 4 triggers are all polled and any filter, search or second action needs a paid plan. The catalogue is 4 triggers, 3 actions and 2 searches, with nothing on opens, clicks or broadcasts, so check first that what you need is there. Then compare how quickly you need new subscribers to arrive, how many steps the flow has, and which tool your team already runs and maintains.
