Overview

What the Lunatask Zapier integration actually does

The Lunatask Zapier integration is a one-way door into your to-do list. Lunatask is an encrypted app that mixes tasks, habits, a journal and notes. On Zapier it exposes a single action, Create Task, so another app has to start the Zap and Lunatask sits at the end of it.

Three outcomes cover most uses. First, a form answer becomes a task: someone fills in your form, and Create Task files it in the area of life you picked, named after the answer. Second, a row added to a shared sheet becomes a task in a goal, so the list stays the place you actually check. Third, an email you mark turns into a task, which keeps your inbox from doubling as a second to-do list.

Now what Zapier does not do here, and it matters more than the list above. There is no trigger, so nothing that happens inside Lunatask can start a Zap: finishing a task, logging a habit or writing a journal entry stays invisible to Zapier. There is no search step either, so a Zap cannot look up a task that already exists. And there is no action to edit, complete or delete a task, nor anything for habits, notes or the journal.

If that one-way flow is not enough, the comparisons n8n vs Zapier and Make vs Zapier are the next read before choosing a tool for this flow.

Vocabulary

Zapier words, in plain English

Seven terms come back on this page. Each one is explained once, here.

Zap
The automation you build on Zapier: one trigger, then one or more actions that run each time the trigger event happens.
Trigger
The event in an app that starts the Zap. Lunatask has none, so the trigger always comes from another app.
Action
What the Zap does once it has started. Here, the only one is Create Task, which writes a new task in Lunatask.
Task
The unit Zapier bills: one action that completes successfully. Your plan counts those, not the Zaps or the checks.
Polling vs instant
A polling trigger is checked on a timer for new items. An instant trigger is reported by the app the moment the event happens.
Filter
A step that lets the Zap continue only when what arrived meets your condition, and stops it quietly otherwise.
Connection
Your Lunatask account linked to Zapier once, then reused by every Zap step that writes into Lunatask.
Cost

What a Lunatask Zap costs

Lunatask is not a premium app, so it works on the free plan. The bill comes from one place: each task created in Lunatask counts as one Zapier task.

  • Premium appNo, available on the free plan
  • Free plan100 tasks a month, two-step Zaps only
  • BilledOne task per Create Task that succeeds
  • Not billedThe trigger, the checks, a failed action

The trigger from the other app costs nothing, however often Zapier checks it, and a Create Task that fails is not counted. The free plan gives 100 tasks a month, but only two-step Zaps: one trigger, one action. Add a filter and the Zap becomes a multi-step Zap, which needs a paid plan. The interval grid below applies to the trigger of the other app when it is a polling one; it never applies to an instant trigger.

Connect

Connect Lunatask to Zapier in three steps

  1. 01

    Open the Apps page

In your Zapier account, go to Apps and click + Add connection. A dialog opens with a search box. You need an existing Lunatask account before you start.

  2. 02

    Pick Lunatask and confirm

Type Lunatask in the search box, select it, then click Add connection. A new tab opens on the Lunatask side, where you sign in with the account whose areas of life and goals should receive the tasks.

  3. 03

    Grant access

Allow Zapier to reach the account. The connection then shows up in your Apps list, and every Create Task step reuses it, so you do this once rather than in each Zap.

First Zap

Your first Lunatask Zap

GoalEvery new form response becomes a task in one Lunatask area of life, named after the answer.

  1. 01

    Create the Zap

Start a new Zap and pick your form tool as the trigger app, with its new-response event. Lunatask cannot start a Zap, so the first step always belongs to another app.

  2. 02

    Test the trigger

Run the test. Zapier brings back the three most recent responses from the connected account, so you map the next step on a real one rather than on placeholders.

  3. 03

    Add Create Task

Add an action, choose Lunatask, then Create Task. Map the answer you want into Task Name and paste the Area ID copied from the Area Settings of the target list.

  4. 04

    Add the confirmation

A third step that sends you an email turns this into a multi-step Zap, which needs a paid plan. On the free plan, stop at Create Task and the Zap still works.

  5. 05

    Test, then publish

Test each step once and open Lunatask to see the task where you expect it. Then click Publish to switch the Zap on; only responses that arrive afterwards create tasks.

Actions

The Lunatask action

Lunatask gives you 1 action. For each one: what it does for you, when to reach for it, and what to watch out for.

1

Create Task

Action

In Zapier“Creates a task in the specified area of life or goal”

This writes a new task into the area of life or goal you point it to, with a name taken from an earlier step. It is the only way Zapier can put anything into Lunatask.

When to use it
a request lands in another app and you want it on your Lunatask list without retyping it.
Watch out
Task Name and Area ID are both required, and the Area ID lives in the Area Settings of each list.
When it breaks

When a Lunatask Zap breaks

Zapier attaches no help article to Lunatask, and the app page lists no limit of its own. What breaks is therefore the general Zapier behavior, plus one required field.

Most surprises come from the trigger side, since the Zap always starts in another app. Four cases are worth knowing before you publish. When something still goes wrong, see Zapier troubleshooting.

  • Old items are never picked up

A Zap only reacts to what happens after it is switched on. Responses or rows that existed before publishing will not become Lunatask tasks; moving that backlog is a separate job.
  • A missing Area ID stops the action

Create Task requires an Area ID. If the field is empty or points nowhere, the action has no list to write into and the task is not created.
  • A sudden batch can be held back

If the trigger app suddenly returns a huge batch, after a bulk import or a migration, Zapier's flood protection can hold the run back instead of creating every task.
  • The same item does not fire twice

On a polling trigger, Zapier remembers what it has already seen, so the same row or response never starts the Zap twice and never creates a second task in Lunatask.

FAQ

Lunatask and Zapier: common questions

01Is the Lunatask Zapier integration free?
Yes, on the free plan. Lunatask is not a premium app, so a Zap that ends with Create Task runs without paying. The free plan caps you at 100 tasks a month and at two-step Zaps, meaning one trigger from another app and one action. That is exactly the shape of a basic Lunatask Zap, so the free plan is enough to test the idea. The moment you add a filter or a second action, the Zap becomes multi-step and needs a paid plan.
02How many Zapier tasks does a Lunatask Zap use?
One per task created. Each Create Task that succeeds counts as one Zapier task. The trigger in the other app costs nothing, and neither do the checks Zapier runs to look for new items. A Create Task that fails, for example because the Area ID is wrong, is not counted. If you add another action after Lunatask, that action counts too, so a Zap with two actions uses twice as much as a Zap with one.
03Does Lunatask react in real time?
It depends on the trigger app, not on Lunatask. Lunatask has no trigger, so the speed of the Zap is set by the app that starts it. If that app offers an instant trigger, it reports the event to Zapier right away, whatever your plan. If it uses a polling trigger, Zapier checks it on a timer: every 15 minutes on Free, every 2 on Professional, every minute on Team and Enterprise. The task then lands in Lunatask once the action runs.
04What does it take to connect Lunatask?
A Lunatask account you can sign in to, and access to the areas of life or goals the Zap will write into. In Zapier, go to Apps, click + Add connection, pick Lunatask, then Add connection again, and sign in on the tab that opens. Once access is granted, the connection is reused by every Zap. Keep the Area ID of your target list at hand too: Create Task requires it, and it sits in the Area Settings of each list.
05Can Zapier mark a Lunatask task as done?
No. Zapier only offers Create Task for Lunatask. There is no action to update, complete or delete a task, and no trigger that fires when you tick one off. Habits, journal entries and notes are not reachable either. So the flow runs one way: other apps feed tasks into Lunatask, and nothing comes back out through Zapier. If you rely on completed tasks updating another tool, that part has to happen by hand or elsewhere.
06What if the Lunatask operation you need is missing?
Then Zapier cannot do it today, and no setting will unlock it. The catalog for Lunatask holds a single action, Create Task, with no trigger and no search step. The options are to rebuild the need around creating a task, to handle that step by hand, or to check whether another automation tool offers more for Lunatask. The list on the Zapier app page is the reference, since it is what the editor shows.
07Zapier, Make or n8n for Lunatask?
Decide on what each tool can reach in Lunatask, not on a general ranking. On Zapier the answer is clear: one action, Create Task, available on the free plan, with no way to read anything back. If that covers the need, Zapier is the shortest path. If you need to react to finished tasks or touch habits and notes, check first whether Make or n8n list those operations for Lunatask, then compare how each one counts what it bills.
