Overview

What the Mobivate BulkSMS Zapier integration does for you

It connects your Mobivate BulkSMS account to Zapier, the tool that chains automations between apps. Text messages you receive can start a sequence of steps in other tools, and those tools can have Mobivate BulkSMS send an SMS or add a number to your opt-out list.

Every incoming text, logged where your team reads it. On SMS... picks up the messages you receive, and an action in your spreadsheet adds each one as a row. No more scrolling through an inbox to find who wrote what.

An opt-out list that stays in step with your other tools. When someone unsubscribes elsewhere, Add Number to Opt-Out List puts their number on the Mobivate BulkSMS opt-out list. One entry, two tools in step.

A text that leaves when something happens in another app. Send SMS writes to the destination number you map, under the sender name or number you set in Originator Name/Number.

What Zapier does not do here: there is no search step, so a Zap cannot check whether a number is already on the opt-out list before adding it. The trigger is not instant either: Zapier checks for new SMS on a timer, and the gap depends on your plan. If you want a second opinion on the tool itself, see our Zapier review and our Make vs Zapier comparison.

Vocabulary

Zapier words in one minute

Eight words come back on every Zapier screen. Here they are in plain terms, before you build anything with your SMS account.

Zap
The automation you build: one trigger, then one or more actions that run each time the trigger event happens.
Trigger
The event in an app that starts the Zap. Once the Zap is on, Zapier waits for that event and nothing else.
Action
What the Zap does after it starts: the step that writes, sends or moves something in an app on your behalf.
Task
The unit Zapier bills: one action that your Zap completes successfully. The number on your plan counts these.
Polling trigger
A trigger Zapier checks on a timer, asking the app for new items at a fixed interval and keeping only unseen ones.
Instant trigger
A trigger the app reports itself: it calls Zapier the moment the event happens, so nothing waits for a check.
Filter
A step that lets the Zap continue only when what arrived meets the condition you set, and stops it otherwise.
Multi-step Zap
Any Zap beyond one trigger and one action. A second action or a filter makes one, and it needs a paid plan.
Cost

What a Mobivate BulkSMS Zap really costs

Mobivate BulkSMS is not a premium app on Zapier, so you can use it on the free plan. You spend tasks, and only actions spend them.

  • Premium appNo, works on the free plan
  • Tasks on the free plan100 per month
  • Steps per Zap on the free plan2 (one trigger, one action)
  • Cost of a trigger check0 tasks

On SMS... never costs a task, however often Zapier checks for new messages. Each Send SMS or Add Number to Opt-Out List that goes through counts as one task; one that fails is not counted. The free plan gives 100 tasks a month and unlimited Zaps, each limited to two steps: one trigger, one action. A filter or a second action makes the Zap multi-step, which needs a paid plan. The plan also sets how often Zapier checks the polling trigger, as the grid below shows.

Connect

Connect Mobivate BulkSMS to Zapier

  1. 01

    Open your connections

In Zapier, open the Apps page of your account and click + Add connection. A connection is your Mobivate BulkSMS account linked once, then reused by every step that works with it.

  2. 02

    Pick Mobivate BulkSMS

Search Mobivate BulkSMS by name in the dialog, select it and click Add connection. You need an account on the app, plus read or write access on anything you do not own yourself and want the Zap to touch.

  3. 03

    Sign in and grant access

Mobivate BulkSMS opens in a new tab. Sign in, then grant Zapier access to the account. The connection is then offered in the account menu of each Zap step that uses the app.

First Zap

Your first Zap: put some senders of incoming SMS on the opt-out list

GoalWhen an SMS arrives in Mobivate BulkSMS and meets a condition you set, add the sender's number to the opt-out list.

  1. 01

    Set the trigger

Create a Zap, pick Mobivate BulkSMS and the On SMS... event, then your connection. It is a polling trigger: Zapier checks for new messages at the interval of your plan.

  2. 02

    Test the trigger

Run the test. Zapier brings back the three most recent items of the connected account, so you build the next steps on a real message. Check at test which details come back.

  3. 03

    Add the filter

From the plus icon, add Filter and fill its three boxes: the field to look at, the rule, the value to compare with. A filter makes the Zap multi-step, so it needs a paid plan.

  4. 04

    Add the opt-out action

Add Mobivate BulkSMS again, event Add Number to Opt-Out List. Map the sender's number into Mobile Phone (intl. Format), checking at test that the trigger returns it, then test the step and read the result.

  5. 05

    Publish

Click Publish to switch the Zap on. Each message that passes the filter then costs one task, and only the messages received after publishing are picked up.

Triggers

Mobivate BulkSMS triggers

1 event starts a Zap when something happens in Mobivate BulkSMS. Zapier checks for them at the interval your plan allows.

1

On SMS...

Polling trigger

In Zapier“Triggers when you receive a new SMS.”

Starts your Zap when a new text message reaches your Mobivate BulkSMS account, and hands that message to the steps that follow so they can store it, forward it or answer it.

How it fires
Zapier goes and looks at regular intervals, and how often depends on your plan: every 15 minutes on the free one
When to use it
replies to your campaigns should land in another tool where someone can read and act on them.
Watch out
Zapier remembers the messages it has already seen, so the same SMS does not start the Zap twice, but messages received before you publish are never fetched.
Actions

Mobivate BulkSMS actions

Mobivate BulkSMS gives you 2 actions. For each one: what it does for you, when to reach for it, and what to watch out for.

1

Add Number to Opt-Out List

Action

In Zapier“Add Mobile Number to Opt-Out list”

Puts a mobile number on the opt-out list of your Mobivate BulkSMS account, from a value an earlier step brought in.

When to use it
someone unsubscribes in another tool, and the SMS side has to know too.
Watch out
the only field, Mobile Phone (intl. Format), is required and must be in international format.
2

Send SMS

Action

In Zapier“Send SMS message to a fixed destination.”

Sends a text from your Mobivate BulkSMS account to one destination number, with the wording mapped from earlier steps.

When to use it
an event in another app should end with a text to a specific person.
Watch out
three fields are required: Mobile Phone in international format, Originator Name/Number for the sender, and the Message itself.
When it breaks

When a Mobivate BulkSMS Zap breaks

Zapier attaches no help article to Mobivate BulkSMS, and no rate limit is published for it. What breaks is what breaks on any Zap built on a polling trigger.

Four cases cover most of the surprises on this app. If a Zap still misbehaves after them, see our Zapier troubleshooting guide.

  • Messages from before publishing are skipped

A Zap only reacts to what happens after it is switched on. Texts received earlier are never picked up; moving that backlog is a separate job.
  • The same SMS never runs twice

Zapier keeps track of what it has already seen on a polling trigger, so the same item does not start the Zap twice.
  • The Zap keeps restarting itself

A Zap that writes into the very place its own trigger watches can set itself off again and again, and burns through the task count fast.
  • A sudden flood gets held back

When a trigger suddenly returns a huge batch, after a bulk import or a migration, Zapier's flood protection can hold those runs back.

FAQ

Mobivate BulkSMS Zapier integration: FAQ

01Is the Mobivate BulkSMS Zapier integration free?
Yes, it works on the free plan, since Zapier does not class Mobivate BulkSMS as a premium app. That plan gives 100 tasks a month and unlimited Zaps, each capped at two steps: one trigger and one action. On SMS... followed by a row in a spreadsheet fits. A filter that keeps only certain messages, or a second action after the first, turns the Zap into a multi-step one, and that needs a paid plan.
02How many tasks does a Mobivate BulkSMS Zap use?
One per action that succeeds. The trigger costs nothing, even though Zapier checks your account for new SMS again and again. So a Zap that logs each incoming text in a spreadsheet costs one task per message, and one that also sends an SMS back costs two. A Send SMS that fails is not counted. On the free plan, all of that runs against 100 tasks a month. Checking for new messages is free, however often it happens.
03Does Mobivate BulkSMS trigger Zaps in real time?
No. On SMS... is a polling trigger: Zapier asks Mobivate BulkSMS for new messages at a fixed interval, and that interval depends on your plan. On the free plan it is every 15 minutes, on Professional every 2 minutes, and every minute on Team and Enterprise. On the paid plans you can also change how often it checks, or run a check by hand from the editor when you are testing.
04What do you need to connect a Mobivate BulkSMS account?
An account on the app, plus read or write access on anything you do not own yourself and want the Zap to touch. The connection is made once, from the Apps page of your Zapier account with + Add connection: you search Mobivate BulkSMS, sign in in the tab that opens, then grant Zapier access. Every later step that uses the app reuses that same connection, so you do not repeat this for each Zap.
05What should go in Originator Name/Number for Send SMS?
The name or number your message will come from, as the recipient sees it. The field is required, alongside Mobile Phone and Message. Use a sender your Mobivate BulkSMS account actually sends from; the field asks for a name or a number, either works. Remember too that Mobile Phone expects an international format, which matters when the numbers come from a tool that stores them differently. Fill all three at test and read what came back before publishing.
06What if the Mobivate BulkSMS operation you want is not there?
Check the Mobivate BulkSMS page on Zapier: it shows the current list of triggers and actions, and the editor offers nothing beyond it. Today that list holds one trigger, On SMS..., and two actions, Send SMS and Add Number to Opt-Out List, with no search step. If what you have in mind is missing from that page, no Zap setting will add it, so build around these three or look at another automation tool.
07Zapier, Make or n8n for Mobivate BulkSMS?
Pick on criteria, not on a ranking. Start by checking that the other tool connects to Mobivate BulkSMS at all, because that ends the comparison if it does not. On Zapier, the only trigger is a polling one, so the plan you choose sets how quickly a received SMS starts your Zap: every 15 minutes on Free, faster on paid plans. Then weigh the number of steps per run and the volume of messages you expect each month.
