Overview

What the Mural Zapier integration does for you

It connects Mural, the digital whiteboard where teams think things through visually, to your other tools through Zapier. A Zap is the automation you build there: one event that starts it, then one or more steps that run each time that event happens. With Mural, the event is a new board element, and the steps can add a mural or a sticky note.

A running log of every idea posted on a board. New Sticky picks up the sticky notes added to a chosen mural. Send each one to a spreadsheet and the ideas from a session end up in rows you can sort, without anyone copying them off the board.

Input from outside, straight onto the board. Put Create Sticky after the event of another app, a form entry for example, and each answer appears as a sticky note on the mural you picked. People who never open Mural still feed the board.

A heads-up when the workspace grows. New Mural and New Room can each post a message to your team chat, so new boards and rooms do not go unnoticed. New Area does the same for areas drawn inside a mural.

What Zapier does not do for Mural: no search, no way to edit, move or delete a sticky note or a mural, and no instant trigger, so every run waits for the next check. Six operations make up the catalog. To compare routes, see our Mural Make integration page.

Vocabulary

Zapier words you will meet on this page

Seven terms, in plain words. Each one comes back further down without a second explanation.

Zap
The automation you set up on Zapier: one event that starts it, followed by the steps that run every time it happens.
Trigger
The event in an app that starts the Zap. Once the Zap is on, Zapier waits for it, here a new mural, room, area or sticky.
Action
What the Zap does after it starts: the step that writes, sends or moves something, such as creating a sticky note.
Task
The unit Zapier bills: one action your Zap completes successfully. Your plan's count is a count of those.
Polling vs instant trigger
Polling: Zapier checks the app on a timer. Instant: the app calls Zapier the moment the event happens. All four Mural triggers poll.
Filter
A step that lets the Zap carry on only when what arrived meets the condition you set, and stops it otherwise.
Multi-step Zap
Any Zap beyond one trigger and one action. A second action or a filter makes one, and it then needs a paid plan.
Cost

What a Mural Zap really costs

Mural is not reserved for paid plans: it works from the free plan. The trigger never costs a task, and Zapier checking Mural for new items costs nothing either, however often it looks.

  • Trigger and checksNever billed
  • Successful action1 task
  • Free plan100 tasks a month, two-step Zaps
  • MuralAvailable on the free plan

Each action that goes through counts as one task, whether it is Create Sticky, Create Mural or a step in another app; one that fails is not counted. The free plan gives 100 tasks a month and unlimited Zaps, but each stops at two steps; a filter or a second action makes the Zap multi-step, which needs a paid plan. All four Mural triggers are polling ones, so the grid below sets how often Zapier checks them on your plan.

Connect

Connect your Mural account to Zapier

  1. 01

    Open the Apps page

In your Zapier account, go to Apps. A connection is your Mural account linked to Zapier once, then reused by every step that uses Mural. You need a Mural account, plus read or write access on anything you do not own yourself and want the Zap to touch.

  2. 02

    Add the connection

Click + Add connection, type Mural in the search box of the dialog that appears and pick it from the results. Then click Add connection to start the link.

  3. 03

    Sign in and grant access

A tab opens on Mural. Sign in with the account the Zap should work on, then grant Zapier access to it. From then on, all six operations can use this connection.

First Zap

Your first Zap: a starter note on each new mural

GoalEach new mural in a chosen room whose details pass a filter gets a first sticky note, written once in the editor.

  1. 01

    Build: pick the trigger

Create a Zap, choose Mural as the app and New Mural as the event, then select your connection. Fill in Workspace and Room, both required, to name the room to follow.

  2. 02

    Test the trigger

Run the test: Zapier brings back the three most recent murals of the connected account, so you map the next steps on a real one. Check at test which details come back.

  3. 03

    Add the filter

From the plus icon, add Filter and fill its three boxes: the field to look at, the rule, the value. This step makes the Zap multi-step, so it needs a paid plan.

  4. 04

    Add the starter note

Add Mural with Create Sticky. Keep the same Workspace and Room, map the new mural from the trigger into Mural, and type the note in the required Text field.

  5. 05

    Test, then publish

Run each step once and read what came back. When the note shows up on the new board as expected, click Publish to switch the Zap on.

Triggers

The four Mural triggers

4 events start a Zap when something happens in Mural. Zapier checks for them at the interval your plan allows.

1

New Area

Polling trigger

In Zapier“Triggers when new areas are created in your mural.”

Starts your Zap when someone draws a new area inside the mural you selected, and passes that area to the next steps so the structure of the board can be echoed elsewhere.

How it fires
Zapier goes and looks at regular intervals, and how often depends on your plan: every 15 minutes on the free one.
When to use it
when each new section of a board should open a matching item in your project tool or a line in a sheet.
Watch out
Workspace, Room and Mural are all required; check at test which areas come back.
2

New Mural

Polling trigger

In Zapier“Triggers when new murals are created.”

Fires on each mural created in the room you chose, so whatever has to happen around a fresh board can start without anyone checking the room.

How it fires
Zapier goes and looks at regular intervals, and how often depends on your plan: every 15 minutes on the free one.
When to use it
to post the new board in your team chat, or to log it in a sheet that lists every board in use.
Watch out
Workspace and Room are required; check at test which murals come back before you publish.
3

New Sticky

Polling trigger

In Zapier“Triggers when new stickies are created in your mural.”

Picks up each sticky note added to a chosen mural and hands its content to the following steps, so ideas posted on the board can travel to other tools.

How it fires
Zapier goes and looks at regular intervals, and how often depends on your plan: every 15 minutes on the free one.
When to use it
when the notes from a board should end up in rows you can sort or in tasks someone follows up.
Watch out
Workspace, Room and Mural are required; check at test which details of the sticky come back.
4

New Room

Polling trigger

In Zapier“Triggers when a new room is created.”

Reacts to each room created in the workspace you picked, so a new room never slips by unnoticed and whatever should follow it can start on its own.

How it fires
Zapier goes and looks at regular intervals, and how often depends on your plan: every 15 minutes on the free one.
When to use it
to tell the team a room exists, or to create a first mural in it with Create Mural.
Watch out
Workspace is the only required field; rooms created before the Zap was switched on are not picked up.
Actions

The two Mural actions

Mural gives you 2 actions. For each one: what it does for you, when to reach for it, and what to watch out for.

1

Create Mural

Action

In Zapier“Create a Mural”

Opens a new mural in the room you choose, with a title taken from an earlier step of the Zap or typed once in the editor.

When to use it
when a new project in another tool should come with its own board ready to use.
Watch out
Workspace, Room and Title are required, so decide where boards should live before you set up the step.
2

Create Sticky

Action

In Zapier“Create a Sticky note”

Adds a sticky note to a mural, with text built from what earlier steps of the Zap brought in.

When to use it
when answers, requests or comments gathered elsewhere should appear on a board without anyone retyping them.
Watch out
Workspace, Room, Mural and Text are all required; check the note on the board at test before you publish.
When it breaks

When a Mural Zap breaks

Zapier links no help article to Mural, so the cases below are the general pitfalls of any Zap built on it.

Read these cases before you publish. If something still goes wrong after that, see our Zapier troubleshooting guide.

  • No catch-up on old boards

A Zap only reacts to what happens after you switch it on. Murals, rooms and stickies that already existed are not picked up; moving them is a separate job.
  • A Zap that sets itself off

As a general precaution: a Zap that writes into the very place its own trigger watches can start itself again and again, and burn through your tasks.
  • Bulk imports held back

When a trigger suddenly returns a huge batch, after a bulk import or a migration, Zapier's flood protection can hold the runs back.
  • The same sticky never runs twice

On a polling trigger, Zapier keeps track of what it has already seen, so the same sticky note does not start the Zap a second time.

FAQ

Mural Zapier integration: common questions

01Is the Mural Zapier integration free?
Yes. Mural is not one of the apps Zapier reserves for paid plans, so it works from the free plan. That plan gives 100 tasks a month and an unlimited number of Zaps, each limited to two steps: one trigger and one action. A Zap that copies each new sticky note to a spreadsheet fits inside it. The starter-note Zap on this page, with its filter, becomes multi-step and needs a paid plan.
02How many tasks does a Mural Zap use?
One task per action that completes. The trigger never costs anything, and neither do the checks Zapier runs on Mural, however frequent they are. So a Zap that logs each new sticky in a sheet uses one task per note, and the starter-note Zap uses one per mural that passes the filter. If an action does not go through, it is not counted. With several actions, each successful one counts on its own.
03Does Mural trigger Zaps in real time?
No. All four Mural triggers, New Area, New Mural, New Sticky and New Room, are polling triggers: Zapier goes and looks at regular intervals, and how often depends on your plan: every 15 minutes on the free one, 2 on Professional, 1 on Team and Enterprise. The type comes from the app and cannot be changed in the editor. On a paid plan you can also run a check by hand from the editor.
04What do you need to connect Mural to Zapier?
A Mural account, plus read or write access on anything you do not own yourself and want the Zap to touch. The steps: open Apps in your Zapier account, click + Add connection, search for Mural and pick it, click Add connection, sign in on the tab that opens and grant Zapier access. The connection is then reused by all six operations. Make sure the account can reach the workspace and rooms your Zaps will use.
05Why does Mural ask for a workspace, a room and a mural?
Because those fields are required, and the step cannot run with one of them empty. New Room only needs the Workspace; New Mural and Create Mural add the Room; New Area, New Sticky and Create Sticky need Workspace, Room and Mural. Fill them in the order the editor shows, then run the test and check that what comes back, or what gets created, is what you expected. If a list you expect is empty, check in Mural what the connected account can open.
06What if the Mural operation you want is not there?
Then the Zapier route cannot do it today. For Mural the editor shows four triggers and two actions: no search, nothing that edits, moves or deletes a sticky or a mural. The Mural page on Zapier shows the current list, so check it before you plan a Zap. Meanwhile, two options remain: shape the workflow around the six existing operations, or look at whether Make or n8n covers the missing step.
07Zapier, Make or n8n for Mural?
Compare them on criteria rather than on a ranking. First, the operations each tool offers for Mural: on Zapier, four polling triggers and two actions. Second, how each one counts usage: Zapier bills every successful action as a task, and its free plan stops at two steps. Third, how long you can wait between checks, since every Mural trigger waits for the next one, every 15 minutes on the free plan.
