Overview

What the NerdyData.com Zapier integration is for

NerdyData.com looks up a domain and tells you which technologies the site runs, what the company spends on them and other company data. On Zapier it works as a lookup inside a Zap (the automation you build on Zapier): another app starts the Zap, NerdyData.com answers, and the following steps use the answer.

Three things people build with it. A lead sheet with company context: Get Domain Details turns the domain of a new lead into tech spend, company details and social links, written into a row next to the lead. A technology profile per account: Lookup Domain Technologies lists what a website runs and the spend attached, ready to sit next to the domain in your sheet. A list of sites that use a technology: Get Search Results searches for code or a technology and returns the matching websites as a list your next steps can use.

Know the limits before you start. NerdyData.com has no trigger, so it can never start a Zap by itself: something else has to. It has no action either, so a Zap never writes into NerdyData.com. And because every useful Zap here holds at least a trigger, a search and an action, it is always a multi-step Zap.

For a broader view of the tool, see our Zapier review, and our Make vs Zapier comparison if the plan question decides it for you.

Vocabulary

Zapier vocabulary in one minute

The words you will meet while building. Each is used on this page as defined here.

Zap
The automation you build: one trigger, then one or more actions that run every time the trigger event happens.
Trigger
The event in an app that starts the Zap. NerdyData.com has none, so the trigger always comes from another app.
Action
What the Zap does once started: the step that writes, sends or moves something for you, like adding a row.
Task
The unit Zapier bills. One task is one action your Zap completes successfully, and your plan counts those.
Instant vs polling trigger
An instant trigger is reported by its app the moment the event happens. A polling trigger is checked by Zapier on a timer.
Search step
A step that looks up something that already exists, such as a domain's data, so the steps after it can use the result.
Filter
A step that lets the Zap continue only when what arrived meets the condition you set, and stops it otherwise.
Multi-step Zap
Any Zap beyond one trigger and one action. A search, a filter or a second action makes it one, and it needs a paid plan.
Cost

What a NerdyData.com Zap really costs

NerdyData.com is not a premium app on Zapier. That does not make it free to use: every Zap that calls one of its searches is multi-step.

  • Premium appNo
  • Free plan tasks100 per month
  • Free plan ZapsUnlimited, two steps each
  • Plan needed with a searchPaid (multi-step Zap)

The free plan gives 100 tasks a month and unlimited Zaps, but each Zap stops at one trigger and one action. A NerdyData.com search adds a step, so the Zap needs a paid plan from day one. On tasks, the trigger never costs one and each action that succeeds counts once; an action that fails is not counted. The interval grid below concerns polling triggers. NerdyData.com has no trigger at all, so it only matters if the app that starts your Zap uses a polling one.

Connect

Connect your NerdyData.com account to Zapier

  1. 01

    Open the Apps page

In your Zapier account, open Apps and click + Add connection. You need a NerdyData.com account, plus read or write access on anything you do not own yourself and want the Zap to touch.

  2. 02

    Find NerdyData.com

Type NerdyData.com in the dialog's search box, select it and click Add connection. You connect once, and every search step of your Zaps reuses that connection.

  3. 03

    Sign in and grant access

A tab opens on NerdyData.com. Sign in with the account you want the lookups to run under, then grant Zapier access to it. Back in Zapier, your searches can use the connection.

First Zap

Your first Zap: company data for every new form lead

GoalEach new form answer gets the company data behind its domain, written into a spreadsheet row next to the lead.

  1. 01

    Start with another app

NerdyData.com has no trigger, so create a Zap and pick your form tool and its new-answer event as the start. Testing it brings back the three most recent answers to work on.

  2. 02

    Add Get Domain Details

Add a step, choose NerdyData.com, and pick Get Domain Details under SEARCH. Map into Domain Name the field of the answer that carries the domain. This makes the Zap multi-step: paid plan.

  3. 03

    Choose the empty case

Decide with Successful if no search results are found? whether the Zap stops when nothing comes back, the default, or carries on and writes the row without company data.

  4. 04

    Write the row

Add your spreadsheet's new-row action and map the lead's details, then the fields the search returned. Check at the test which fields NerdyData.com actually sends back.

  5. 05

    Test and publish

Test each step once and read the results, then click Publish. Only answers that arrive after that moment go through the Zap.

Searches

NerdyData.com searches

3 search steps look for data that already exists in NerdyData.com, so a later step can use it.

A search step looks something up and hands the result to the next steps. In the editor, searches sit at the bottom of the Action event list, under SEARCH. Three settings decide what happens when the answer is not one clean match.

1

Get Domain Details

Search

In Zapier“Lookup a domain and return its tech spend, company details, social media links, and more”

Takes a domain, its only required field, and returns what NerdyData.com knows about the company: tech spend, company details, social media links and more.

When to use it
an earlier step hands you a company website and you want the company details next to it.
Watch out
enter the bare domain, such as braze.com, without quotes or spaces, and check at the test what actually reaches the field.
2

Lookup Domain Technologies

Search

In Zapier“Lookup the technologies used on a website, and their tech spend”

Lists the technologies a website runs, with the spend attached to them, from the domain you hand it in the required Domain field.

When to use it
you want to know which technologies a given site runs, not the company data around it.
Watch out
the field expects a domain, not a full web address, so check at the test what your earlier step really passes in.
3

Get Search Results

Search

In Zapier“Search for code or technology and get a list of matching websites”

Works the other way round: you search for a piece of code or a technology, and it returns the websites that match.

When to use it
you start from a technology or a piece of code, not from a domain, and want the sites that match.
Watch out
the answer is a list, so set what happens with several results, and check at the test what each item holds before mapping it.

The three settings every search exposes

  1. Successful if no search results are found?
On its default, a search that finds nothing stops the Zap and the steps that depend on it are skipped. Switched on, the Zap goes on empty-handed.
  2. Create X if it doesn't exist yet?
This box turns a search into a find-or-create. NerdyData.com exposes no find-or-create variant, so this setting has no role on its three searches.
  3. If multiple search results are found?
Three ways out when several items match: keep the first one, the default, stop the Zap, or pass all of them on at once.
When it breaks

When a NerdyData.com Zap breaks

Zapier attaches no help article to NerdyData.com. The cases below come from how every Zap behaves, applied to a Zap built around lookups.

Each case has a fix you can apply in the editor. For the general method, see our Zapier troubleshooting guide.

  • The lookup comes back empty

On the default setting, a search that finds nothing stops the Zap there, and the row or message after it is never written.
  • Rows already there are skipped

A Zap only reacts to what happens after it is switched on. Domains already in your sheet are not looked up; handling them is a separate job.
  • A Zap that sets itself off

If the Zap writes its results into the very sheet its trigger watches, it can start itself again and again and burn through tasks.
  • A bulk import held back

When the trigger app suddenly returns a huge batch, after a bulk import or a migration, Zapier's flood protection can hold those runs back.

FAQ

NerdyData.com Zapier integration: common questions

01Is the NerdyData.com Zapier integration free?
Not in practice. NerdyData.com is not a premium app, but its three operations are all searches, and a search turns a Zap into a multi-step Zap. The free plan, with its 100 tasks a month and unlimited Zaps, only builds two-step Zaps: one trigger and one action. Since NerdyData.com has no trigger and no action of its own, every Zap that calls one of its searches goes beyond those two steps, so you need a paid plan before your first lookup runs.
02How many tasks does a NerdyData.com Zap use?
Count the actions that succeed: each one is one task, and the trigger costs nothing. In the first Zap on this page, the spreadsheet row is the action, so every new lead that goes all the way through costs one task. Add a message on top and it becomes two per lead. An action that fails is not counted against your plan. Checking for new data in the trigger app costs nothing either, however often it happens.
03Does NerdyData.com work in real time with Zapier?
NerdyData.com has no trigger, so the question moves to the app that starts your Zap. If that app's trigger is instant, the Zap starts the moment the event happens, whatever your plan. If it is a polling trigger, Zapier checks on a timer that depends on your plan, from 15 minutes on Free to 1 minute on Team and Enterprise. The NerdyData.com search then runs when the Zap reaches its step, never on its own.
04What does it take to connect NerdyData.com to Zapier?
A NerdyData.com account, plus read or write access on anything you do not own yourself and want the Zap to touch. You connect once from the Apps page of your Zapier account: add a connection, choose NerdyData.com, sign in in the tab that opens and grant access. Every search step then reuses that connection. Remember the plan side too: a Zap that uses one of its searches is multi-step, so it needs a paid plan.
05Why does Get Domain Details find nothing for a domain?
Check the format first. The required Domain Name field expects the bare domain, such as braze.com, without quotes or spaces. If the earlier step passes a full web address or an email instead, the field does not hold what it expects. Look at the test to see exactly what reaches the field. Then decide with Successful if no search results are found? whether an empty answer should stop the Zap, the default, or let it carry on.
06What if a NerdyData.com operation is missing from Zapier?
Open the NerdyData.com page on Zapier: it shows the current list, and the editor offers nothing outside it. Right now that list holds three searches and nothing else, so there is no way to start a Zap from NerdyData.com or to write into it. If your need sits outside those three lookups, the usual answer is to run it in NerdyData.com directly, or to check whether Make or n8n expose that operation.
07Zapier, Make or n8n for NerdyData.com?
Choose on criteria, not on a ranking. On Zapier, every NerdyData.com Zap is multi-step, so the real question is the cost of a paid plan for your volume of lookups. On Make and n8n, check first whether NerdyData.com is listed at all, then which lookups you get, then how each tool counts a run compared with Zapier's task per successful action. Put your own monthly number of leads through those three checks.
