Overview

What the Newtral.io Zapier integration actually does

Newtral.io is a carbon-emissions tool: an organization tracks its emissions there, reports on them and works to bring them down. Linking it to Zapier lets a Zap (an automation you build once: one trigger, then one or more actions) push data into Newtral.io whenever something happens in another tool. The data only flows one way: into Newtral.io.

Three concrete results, one per action. First, an activity line in Newtral.io each time a row lands in your spreadsheet, through Add Activity, so the figures you already type somewhere else stop being typed twice. Second, a new employee record built from a form answer, through Add Employee. Third, a document stored in Newtral.io when your other tool hands one over, through Upload a File.

Now what Zapier does not do here. Newtral.io has no trigger on Zapier, so nothing that happens inside Newtral.io can start a Zap. It has no search either, so a Zap cannot look up an existing activity or employee before writing. And there is no action to edit or delete what was sent: each run creates, it never corrects.

That shape matters when you compare tools. If you are weighing Zapier against other platforms for this kind of one-way feed, open our Make vs Zapier comparison or our n8n vs Zapier comparison, then check on each side whether Newtral.io is offered at all.

Vocabulary

Zapier words in one minute

Eight words come back all over this page. Here is what each one means in plain terms.

Zap
The automation itself: one trigger, then one or more actions that run each time the trigger event happens.
Trigger
The event in an app that starts the Zap. Newtral.io has none, so the trigger always comes from another app.
Action
What the Zap does once started: the step that writes, sends or moves something for you, here inside Newtral.io.
Task
The unit Zapier bills. One action completed successfully is one task, and your plan counts those.
Polling vs instant
A polling trigger is checked on a timer for new items. An instant trigger is reported by its app the moment the event happens.
Filter
A step that lets the Zap continue only when the incoming data meets your condition, and stops it otherwise.
Multi-step Zap
Any Zap beyond one trigger and one action. A second action or a filter turns a Zap into one, and it then needs a paid plan.
Connection
Your Newtral.io account linked to Zapier once, then reused by every step that writes to Newtral.io.
Cost

What a Newtral.io Zap really costs

Newtral.io is not one of the apps Zapier keeps for paid plans, so it works from the free plan.

  • Free plan100 tasks a month, unlimited Zaps of two steps
  • BilledEach successful action, never the trigger
  • Paid plan needed forA filter or a second action

The trigger never costs a task, and neither does checking for new data. Each Newtral.io action that succeeds counts as one task; an action that fails is not counted. The free plan only builds two-step Zaps: one trigger, one action. Add a filter or a second Newtral.io action and the Zap becomes multi-step, which needs a paid plan. The interval grid below applies to the polling trigger of the app that starts your Zap, since Newtral.io has no trigger of its own.

Connect

Connect Newtral.io to Zapier in three steps

  1. 01

    Open the Apps page

In your Zapier account, open Apps and click + Add connection. You need a Newtral.io account, plus read or write access on anything you do not own yourself and want the Zap to touch.

  2. 02

    Pick Newtral.io

Type Newtral.io in the search box of the dialog, select it in the results, then click Add connection. A new browser tab opens so you can reach your Newtral.io account.

  3. 03

    Sign in and grant access

Sign in to Newtral.io in that tab and grant Zapier access to the account. From then on, every Newtral.io step in every Zap you build reuses this one connection.

First Zap

Your first Zap: a spreadsheet row becomes a Newtral.io activity

GoalEach new row of your spreadsheet becomes an activity in Newtral.io, in a two-step Zap that fits the free plan.

  1. 01

    Pick the trigger

Create a Zap and choose your spreadsheet app with its new-row event. Testing it brings back the three most recent rows, so you map fields on a real one.

  2. 02

    Keep it at two steps

Leave the Zap at one trigger and one action and it runs on the free plan. If you later want only some rows to go through, a Filter step does that, but it makes the Zap multi-step, which needs a paid plan.

  3. 03

    Add the Newtral.io action

Choose Newtral.io and Add Activity, select your connection, then fill Facility ID, Emission Source Id and Amount from the row or by hand.

  4. 04

    Test the action

Run the step once and read what came back. If a value is missing or in the wrong column, fix the mapping now rather than after publishing.

  5. 05

    Publish

Click Publish to switch the Zap on. Only rows added after this point are picked up; the rows already in the sheet stay where they are.

Actions

The 3 Newtral.io actions

Newtral.io gives you 3 actions. For each one: what it does for you, when to reach for it, and what to watch out for.

1

Add Activity

Action

In Zapier“Create an Activity in the Newtral.io”

Creates an activity in your Newtral.io account from three values: Facility ID, Emission Source Id and Amount. Optional fields such as Unit, Start Date and End Date can be filled too when your source has them.

When to use it
a row, a form answer or a record elsewhere already holds the values Add Activity needs, and you are tired of typing them a second time.
Watch out
Facility ID, Emission Source Id and Amount are all required, so check at the test that each one gets a value.
2

Add Employee

Action

In Zapier“Add an employee in the Newtral.io”

Adds an employee to Newtral.io. Only Employee ID is required. Every other field is optional, including a long series whose names start with Is, so fill only those your source can actually feed.

When to use it
your onboarding form or staff list lives in another tool and Newtral.io should follow it.
Watch out
Zapier offers no Newtral.io action to edit an employee once sent, so plan the mapping before the first real run.
3

Upload a File

Action

In Zapier“Upload a File”

Sends a file into your Newtral.io account. The single required field is File, which you fill from an earlier step that carries one.

When to use it
supporting documents arrive in another app and you want a copy in Newtral.io without downloading and re-uploading by hand.
Watch out
File must be mapped from an earlier step; check at the test what that step hands over before you publish.
When it breaks

When a Newtral.io Zap breaks

Zapier attaches no help article to Newtral.io and lists no limit of its own, so the cases below are the general ones that apply to any Zap feeding it.

Each case is short. If a run fails and the reason is not here, our Zapier troubleshooting guide is the next stop.

  • Nothing from before publishing

A Zap only reacts to events after it is switched on. Rows, answers or files that existed before are not sent to Newtral.io; moving that backlog is a separate job.
  • Writing where the trigger watches

As a general precaution: a Zap that writes into the very place its own trigger watches can set itself off again and again, and use up tasks quickly.
  • A sudden batch can be held back

After a bulk import or a migration in the source app, the trigger may return a huge batch at once, and Zapier's flood protection can hold it back.
  • The same item does not fire twice

On a polling trigger, Zapier keeps track of what it has already seen, so the same item does not launch the Zap twice.

FAQ

Newtral.io and Zapier: common questions

01Is the Newtral.io Zapier integration free?
Yes, it works on the free plan. Newtral.io is not among the apps Zapier keeps for paid plans and trials. The free plan gives 100 tasks a month and an unlimited number of Zaps, each limited to two steps: one trigger from another app and one Newtral.io action. All three Newtral.io actions fit that shape. The moment you add a filter or a second action, the Zap becomes multi-step and you need a paid plan. Since Newtral.io has no search, no lookup step will push you over that line by accident.
02How many tasks does a Newtral.io Zap use?
One task per Newtral.io action that completes successfully. The trigger costs nothing, and Zapier checking for new data costs nothing either, however often it checks. An action that does not go through is not counted against your plan. If your Zap chains Add Employee and then Upload a File, a single run that succeeds on both steps uses two tasks. A few apps and actions on Zapier take more than one task when they complete, so check your task count after your first real runs rather than estimating it in advance.
03Does Newtral.io sync with Zapier in real time?
It depends entirely on the app that starts the Zap, because Newtral.io has no trigger. If that app offers an instant trigger, it reports the event to Zapier straight away, whatever your plan, and the Newtral.io action follows. If it uses a polling trigger, Zapier checks for new items at a fixed interval that depends on your plan: 15 minutes on Free, 2 on Professional, 1 on Team and Enterprise. The app page of the trigger app on Zapier shows the free-plan interval on each of its polling triggers.
04What is required to connect Newtral.io to Zapier?
A Newtral.io account, plus read or write access on anything you do not own yourself and want the Zap to touch. The connection itself is made once from the Apps page of your Zapier account: click + Add connection, search for Newtral.io, click Add connection, sign in to Newtral.io in the tab that opens and grant Zapier access. Every Newtral.io step in every Zap then reuses that same connection, so you do not repeat the process for each new automation you build.
05Why does Add Activity ask for three values before it runs?
Because Facility ID, Emission Source Id and Amount are all required fields of that action. Add Employee is lighter, with Employee ID as its only required field; Add Activity cannot run until all three of its own have a value. Before testing, decide for each field whether the value comes from the trigger or is typed once into the step. Then run the test and read what came back: that is where a missing or misplaced value shows up, before the Zap is published.
06What if the Newtral.io action you want is not available?
Open the Newtral.io app page on Zapier: it shows the current list of operations. Today that means three actions (Add Activity, Add Employee and Upload a File), no trigger and no search. If the step you are after is not on that list, a Zap cannot perform it as a Newtral.io operation. When what is missing is the starting point, remember that every Newtral.io Zap already begins in another app, so the question becomes which app holds the event you want to react to.
07Zapier, Make or n8n for Newtral.io?
Decide on criteria rather than on a ranking. First, coverage: on Zapier, Newtral.io offers three actions and nothing to start a Zap, so check whether the other platforms offer Newtral.io at all and with which operations. Second, shape: a Zap of one trigger and one Newtral.io action runs on the free plan, while anything longer needs a paid plan. Third, billing: Zapier counts each successful action as a task, so estimate how many rows, answers or files you expect to send.
