Overview

What the Ning Zapier integration does for your community

Ning is a platform for building community websites with social features built in: members, blogs, comments. Connected to Zapier, your Ning site can tell your other tools when a post, a comment or a member arrives, and other apps can publish posts on it for you.

Every new post announced. New Blog Post picks up each post on the blog you choose, so your chat tool, your newsletter tool or a spreadsheet hears about it without anyone copying links.

Comments that get answered. New Blog Post Comment brings each new comment on a blog into Zapier. With a filter behind it, the ones that need a reply can land where your moderators already work.

Posts that come from elsewhere. Create Blog Post writes a post on a Ning blog from content an earlier step carried, and a Save as a draft? option you can set in the step.

A fourth result, if your community grows through sign-ups: New User starts a Zap for each new member.

What Zapier does not do here: every trigger is a polling one, so nothing is instant, and the editor offers no search and no way to edit or delete a post, a comment or a member. Those stay in Ning.

Vocabulary

Zapier words in one minute

Seven terms cover everything below, even if you have never opened Zapier.

Zap
The automation you build on Zapier: one trigger, then one or more actions that run each time the trigger event happens.
Trigger
The event in an app that starts the Zap. Once the Zap is on, Zapier waits for it, here a new post, comment or member.
Action
What the Zap does once it has started: the step that writes, sends or moves something for you, like publishing a post.
Task
The unit Zapier bills: one action your Zap completes successfully. Your plan's allowance is a count of those.
Polling trigger
A trigger Zapier checks on a timer: it asks the app for new items at a fixed interval and keeps what it has not seen yet.
Instant trigger
A trigger the app reports itself, the moment the event happens. Ning has none: all three of its triggers are polling ones.
Filter
A step that lets the Zap carry on only when what arrived meets the condition you set, and stops it otherwise.
Cost

What a Ning Zap costs you

Ning is not a premium app, so it works on Zapier's free plan. The trigger never costs a task, and the checks Zapier makes for new posts, comments or members are free too.

  • Trigger and checksFree, never counted
  • Each successful action1 task
  • Free plan100 tasks a month, two-step Zaps
  • Filter or second actionMulti-step Zap, paid plan

Each action that succeeds is one task; an action that fails is not counted. The free plan gives you 100 tasks a month and Zaps of two steps, one trigger and one action. A filter or a second action makes the Zap multi-step, which needs a paid plan. The grid below shows how often Zapier checks the three Ning triggers on each plan. On paid plans you can change it, or run a check by hand from the editor.

Connect

Connect your Ning account to Zapier

  1. 01

    Open the connection dialog

In Zapier, open the Apps page of your account and click + Add connection. A connection is your Ning account linked once, then reused by every step that uses Ning.

  2. 02

    Pick Ning

Search for Ning in the dialog, select it and click Add connection. You need an account on Ning, plus read or write access on anything you do not own yourself and want the Zap to touch.

  3. 03

    Sign in and grant access

A tab opens on Ning. Sign in there and grant Zapier access to the account. The connection then serves the three triggers and the action, in any Zap you build.

First Zap

Your first Ning Zap: send the comments that need a reply

GoalWhen a new comment lands on a Ning blog and meets your condition, a message goes to the chat channel your moderators watch.

  1. 01

Create the Zap and set the trigger

Start a new Zap, pick Ning and New Blog Post Comment, choose your connection, then the Blog to watch. Zapier will check it at your plan's interval.

  2. 02

    Test the trigger

Run the test. Zapier brings back the three most recent comments of that blog, so you build on a real one. Read which details come back before going further.

  3. 03

    Add a filter

Add a Filter step and set its three boxes: the field to look at, the rule, the value, picked from what the test returned. A filter needs a paid plan.

  4. 04

    Add the message

Choose your chat tool and its send-message action. Put the comment details you saw at test into the text, then test the step once and read the result.

  5. 05

    Publish

Click Publish to switch the Zap on. From then on, matching comments reach the channel. Comments posted before you published are not sent.

Triggers

Ning triggers in Zapier

3 events start a Zap when something happens in Ning. Zapier checks for them at the interval your plan allows.

1

New Blog Post

Polling trigger

In Zapier“Triggers when a new blog post is created.”

Starts your Zap each time a new post appears on the Ning blog you picked. Zapier puts it forward as one of the app's main triggers.

How it fires
Zapier goes and looks at regular intervals, and how often depends on your plan: every 15 minutes on the free one.
When to use it
each post should be shared beyond the site, in a chat channel, a newsletter draft or a content calendar.
Watch out
the Blog field is required, so the trigger watches one blog at a time; a post on another blog will not start this Zap.
2

New Blog Post Comment

Polling trigger

In Zapier“Triggers when a new comment is made on a blog post.”

Fires when someone leaves a new comment on a post of the chosen blog. It is the way to keep an eye on discussions without opening the site.

How it fires
Zapier goes and looks at regular intervals, and how often depends on your plan: every 15 minutes on the free one.
When to use it
comments should reach the people who answer them, or be logged for later review.
Watch out
this trigger also requires a Blog; comments on posts of other blogs stay outside the Zap.
3

New User

Polling trigger

In Zapier“Triggers when a new user is created.”

Goes off when a new user is created on your Ning site. Unlike the two blog triggers, it asks for no blog: it covers the whole site.

How it fires
Zapier goes and looks at regular intervals, and how often depends on your plan: every 15 minutes on the free one.
When to use it
each new member should be added to a spreadsheet, a mailing list or a welcome sequence in another tool.
Watch out
check at test which details about the user come back before you map them to another app.
Actions

The Ning action in Zapier

Ning gives you 1 action. For each one: what it does for you, when to reach for it, and what to watch out for.

1

Create Blog Post

Action

In Zapier“Creates a new blog post.”

Creates a new post on a Ning blog from content an earlier step brought in. Zapier highlights it as the app's main action.

When to use it
an article written in a document tool, a form or a feed should appear on your community site without copy and paste.
Watch out
the Blog field is required. A Save as a draft? option exists; check at test how the post shows up in Ning before you publish the Zap.
When it breaks

When a Ning Zap breaks

Zapier attaches no help article to Ning, so the cases below are the general limits of any Zap, applied to this app.

  • Older posts and members are not sent

A Zap only reacts to what happens after you switch it on. Posts, comments and members that already existed are not picked up; moving them is a separate job.
  • A Zap that keeps setting itself off

A Zap that writes into the place its own trigger watches can start itself again and again and burn tasks. Keep the blog a trigger watches apart from the one an action writes to.
  • A big batch after an import

When a trigger suddenly returns a huge batch, after a bulk import or a migration, Zapier's flood protection can hold it back.
  • The same post, only once

Zapier keeps track of what it has already seen on a polling trigger, so the same post, comment or member does not start the Zap twice.

FAQ

Ning Zapier integration: frequent questions

01Is the Ning Zapier integration free?
Yes. Ning is not a premium app, so it works on Zapier's free plan, which gives you 100 tasks a month and an unlimited number of Zaps, each with one trigger and one action. A new blog post that sends a chat message fits, and so does a trigger from another app followed by Create Blog Post. Add a filter or a second action and the Zap becomes multi-step, which needs a paid plan. On the free plan, Zapier also checks the Ning triggers at the slowest interval of the grid.
02How many tasks does a Ning Zap use?
One per successful action, each time the Zap runs. The trigger is free, and so are Zapier's checks for new posts, comments or members, whether they find something or not. A Zap that announces each new comment costs one task per comment; if it also logs the comment in a sheet, two. An action that fails is not counted. So your count follows the number of new posts, comments or members, times the number of actions in the Zap.
03Does Ning trigger Zaps in real time?
No. All three Ning triggers are polling triggers: Zapier goes and looks at regular intervals, and how often depends on your plan, every 15 minutes on the free one. Professional checks every 2 minutes, Team and Enterprise every minute. On paid plans you can change that interval, and you can run a check by hand from the editor. The Ning app page on Zapier shows the free-plan interval on each of these triggers, so you can check it there.
04What does it take to connect Ning to Zapier?
An account on Ning, plus read or write access on anything you do not own yourself and want the Zap to touch. The steps: open the Apps page of your Zapier account, click + Add connection, search for Ning and click Add connection, then sign in to Ning in the tab that opens and grant Zapier access. The same connection then serves the three triggers and Create Blog Post in every Zap you build.
05What does Create Blog Post ask for?
A Blog, which is required, and an optional setting labelled Save as a draft?. Zapier puts Create Blog Post forward as the main Ning action, and it is the only one: everything a Zap writes on Ning goes through it. The Blog field ties each step to one blog of your site. What the draft setting changes for your post is not spelled out beyond its label, so run the step once at test and look at how the post shows up in Ning before you publish the Zap.
06What if the Ning operation you want is not there?
Then Zapier cannot do it with Ning for now. The editor offers only the three triggers and the action shown on the Ning app page on Zapier, which is where the current list lives. There is no search, and nothing to edit or delete a post, a comment or a member. Those stay manual in Ning. A Zap can still cover the rest of the flow: announcing new content and members, or publishing posts that come from elsewhere.
07Zapier, Make or n8n for Ning?
Choose by what you need. On Zapier, Ning gives you three triggers on posts, comments and members plus one action to publish, ready to connect to any app Zapier supports. All three triggers are polling ones, so timing follows your plan. If you need more of Ning than these four operations, or long multi-step flows billed per task, look at what Make and n8n offer for Ning before you decide.
