SEMrush Zapier integrationAutomate SEMrush with Zapier.

The SEMrush Zapier integration gives you 2 triggers and 6 actions. Both triggers watch Site Audit; the actions start, re-run and report on audits, and send review invitations by email or SMS. Both triggers are polled, so timing depends on your plan.

Overview

What the SEMrush Zapier integration actually does

It connects the SEMrush marketing toolkit to Zapier around two features: Site Audit, which crawls a website and lists what to fix, and review invitations for local businesses. Audit events can start a Zap, and a Zap can launch audits or ask customers for a review.

Three results people set up first. A report that arrives without asking: Completed Site Audit starts the Zap and Get Overview Report pulls the summary of that campaign, ready for the next step. A new client site audited from day one: Create a New Site Audit Campaign sets up the project with its domain and page limit as soon as the deal is signed. Reviews requested on time: Review Invitation Email and Review Invitation SMS ask a customer of a given location for feedback.

What Zapier does not do here matters as much. Nothing outside Site Audit and review invitations is exposed: no rank tracking, no keyword data, no backlink step. There is no search step either. And both triggers are polling triggers, so on the free plan a finished audit can wait up to fifteen minutes before the Zap notices it.

If you are comparing platforms, the SEMrush Make integration page covers the same app, and our Make vs Zapier comparison puts the two tools side by side.

Vocabulary

Zapier vocabulary in one minute

The words you will see in the editor, in plain English.

Zap
The automation you build on Zapier: one trigger, then one or more actions that run each time the trigger event happens.
Trigger
The event that starts the Zap. Once the Zap is on, Zapier waits for it: here, a finished audit or a new audit task.
Action
What the Zap does once started: the step that writes, sends or moves something for you, like re-running an audit.
Task
The unit Zapier bills: one action your Zap completes successfully. Your plan's allowance counts those.
Polling trigger
A trigger Zapier checks on a timer, keeping only what it has not seen. Both SEMrush triggers work this way.
Instant trigger
A trigger the app reports itself the moment the event happens, so nothing waits for a check. SEMrush has none on Zapier.
Filter
A step that lets the Zap go on only when what arrived meets your condition, and stops it otherwise.
Multi-step Zap
Any Zap beyond one trigger and one action. A filter or a second action makes it one, and it then needs a paid plan.
Cost

What a SEMrush Zap really costs

Zapier bills completed actions. Checking SEMrush for finished audits is free, however often it happens.

  • Trigger and polling0 tasks
  • Each successful action1 task
  • Free plan100 tasks a month, two-step Zaps, check every 15 min
  • SEMrush on the free planYes, it is not a premium app

The trigger never costs a task, and neither does Zapier polling SEMrush for news. Each action that succeeds counts once: fetching a report and then re-crawling costs two tasks per audit. A failed action is not counted. The free plan gives 100 tasks a month, unlimited Zaps and a check every fifteen minutes, but only two-step Zaps. A filter or a second action means a paid plan. SEMrush is not a premium app, so it is available on the free plan.

Connect

Connect SEMrush to Zapier in three steps

  1. 01

    Open your connections

In Zapier, open the Apps page of your account and click + Add connection. A connection is your SEMrush account linked once, then reused by every SEMrush step in your Zaps.

  2. 02

    Pick SEMrush

Search for SEMrush in the dialog, select it and click Add connection. A tab opens on the SEMrush side: sign in with the account that owns the projects and locations you plan to automate.

  3. 03

    Grant access

Allow Zapier to use the account and the connection shows up in every SEMrush step. If a project belongs to a colleague, check first that your account can read and change it.

First Zap

Your first Zap: an overview report after every audit

GoalWhen a Site Audit finishes and passes your rule, the Zap fetches its overview report so you can hand it on.

  1. 01

    Create the Zap

Start a new Zap, choose SEMrush as the app that starts it and Completed Site Audit as the event. Pick the connection you added earlier.

  2. 02

    Choose the campaign

Select the Site Audit campaign to watch, a required field. Test the trigger: Zapier brings back the three most recent items, so you map the next steps on real data.

  3. 03

    Add the filter

From the plus icon, add a Filter and set the field, the rule and the value. Text rules only work on text and number rules on numbers, so match the type or nothing passes.

  4. 04

    Add the report

Add SEMrush with Get Overview Report and choose the same Site Audit campaign. Run the step and read what came back before going further.

  5. 05

    Publish

Click Publish to switch the Zap on. Because of the filter it is a multi-step Zap, so it needs a paid plan, which also shortens the time between checks.

Triggers

SEMrush triggers

2 events start a Zap when something happens in SEMrush. Zapier checks for them at the interval your plan allows.

1

Completed Site Audit

Polling trigger

In Zapier“Triggers when next Site Audit has been completed.”

Starts your Zap when the next run of a Site Audit campaign has finished, so whatever depends on fresh audit results can follow without someone refreshing the dashboard. It is the natural hook for reporting.

How it fires
Zapier goes and looks at regular intervals, and how often depends on your plan: every 15 minutes on the free one.
When to use it
an in-house SEO lead who wants the summary of each finished crawl pulled as soon as it lands.
Watch out
you choose one campaign per Zap, a required field, so other sites need their own Zap.
2

New Task for Site Audit Campaign

Polling trigger

In Zapier“Triggers when new task for the Site Audit campaign has been created in Semrush.”

Fires when a new task is created for a Site Audit campaign in SEMrush. That turns an audit's to-do list into events your team can act on, instead of a page someone has to remember to open.

How it fires
Zapier goes and looks at regular intervals, and how often depends on your plan: every 15 minutes on the free one.
When to use it
a content team that wants each new audit task to reach the people who fix pages.
Watch out
the campaign is required here too, and tasks created before the Zap was on are never picked up.
Actions

SEMrush actions

SEMrush gives you 6 actions. For each one: what it does for you, when to reach for it, and what to watch out for.

1

Create a New Site Audit Campaign

Action

In Zapier“Creates a new project and sets up Site Audit campaign”

Creates a SEMrush project and sets up its Site Audit in one go, from a project name, a domain and a cap on the number of pages to check. The domain is also where the crawl starts.

When to use it
a freelancer who signs a new website client and wants the first audit set up at once.
Watch out
all three fields are required, including the page limit.
2

Get Overview Report

Action

In Zapier“Overview report for the Site Audit campaign”

Brings back the overview report of a Site Audit campaign, so later steps can pass it on or store it. It reads; it changes nothing in SEMrush.

When to use it
a marketing manager wants the latest audit summary in the next team update.
Watch out
choosing the campaign is required, and the report is only as fresh as the last audit.
3

Re-Crawl a Site Audit Campaign

Action

In Zapier“Starts a new audit for an existing campaign”

Launches a new audit on a campaign that already exists. Handy after a release, when you want to know quickly whether the fixes held.

When to use it
a developer ships a batch of SEO fixes and wants a fresh crawl to confirm them.
Watch out
pointed at the campaign Completed Site Audit watches, it restarts itself in a loop.
4

Review Invitation Email

Action

In Zapier“Send invitation email for a customer”

Sends a customer an email inviting them to review one of your business locations. It suits a business that collects feedback after each visit or purchase.

When to use it
a dental practice that wants every completed appointment followed by a review request.
Watch out
the location is required and must already be set up in SEMrush.
5

Review Invitation SMS

Action

In Zapier“Send invitation SMS for a customer”

Does the same job by text message, for customers who read SMS faster than email. One location per step, chosen from those in your account.

When to use it
a car repair shop that texts a review link when the car is picked up.
Watch out
sending both an email and an SMS invitation is two actions, so two tasks per customer.
6

API Request (Beta)

Action

In Zapier“This is an advanced action which makes a raw HTTP request that includes this integration's authentication.”

An advanced step that calls SEMrush directly with your existing connection, for needs the ready actions do not cover. It asks for a method and an address, and only reaches SEMrush's own domains.

When to use it
someone technical on the team needs a SEMrush feature with no ready action.
Watch out
Stop on error is required: Yes halts the Zap when SEMrush returns an error.
When it breaks

When a SEMrush Zap breaks

Most surprises come from how Zapier watches and repeats things, not from SEMrush itself.

Zapier attaches no help article and no recorded limit to SEMrush, so the cases below are the general limits every app shares, applied to audits and review requests. Read them before publishing. If a run fails anyway, the Zapier troubleshooting page is the place to start.

  • A re-crawl that triggers itself

Completed Site Audit followed by Re-Crawl on the same campaign starts a new audit, which completes, which starts the Zap again. Target another campaign or add a filter.
  • Past audits and tasks are ignored

A Zap only reacts to what happens after it is switched on. Audits finished and tasks created before that stay where they are.
  • A large batch of new tasks gets held

When a trigger suddenly returns a huge batch, Zapier's flood protection can hold it back rather than run the Zap for every item.
  • Duplicates are filtered for you

On a polling trigger, Zapier remembers what it has already seen, so the same audit or task does not start the Zap twice.

FAQ

SEMrush Zapier integration: frequent questions

01Is the SEMrush Zapier integration free?
Yes, within the free plan's limits. SEMrush is not a premium app, so the free Zapier plan can use it, with 100 tasks a month and unlimited Zaps. The catch is the shape of the Zap: free means two steps, one trigger and one action. A finished audit that fetches its overview report fits. Add a filter, or a second action such as a re-crawl after the report, and the Zap becomes multi-step and needs a paid plan.
02How many tasks does a SEMrush Zap use?
One task per action that succeeds, and nothing for the trigger. Zapier checking SEMrush for finished audits or new tasks is free, however often it looks. A Zap that fetches the overview report after each audit costs one task per audit. Sending both a review email and a review SMS to the same customer costs two. Failed actions are not counted. So the figure to estimate is the number of audits or customers going through the Zap multiplied by its actions.
03Are SEMrush triggers real time on Zapier?
No. Both SEMrush triggers are polling triggers: Zapier asks SEMrush for new items on a timer and starts the Zap when it finds one. On the free plan that check runs every fifteen minutes, on Professional every two minutes, and every minute on Team and Enterprise. On paid plans the timing can be adjusted, and a check can be run by hand from the editor. Your plan, not SEMrush, decides that delay.
04What does it take to connect SEMrush?
A SEMrush account with access to the projects you want to automate, and a Zapier account. From the Apps page in Zapier you add a connection, pick SEMrush, sign in on the tab that opens and grant access. The connection is reused by every SEMrush step. Before building, make sure the Site Audit campaign exists, since both triggers and three actions require you to choose one, and that your business locations are set up if you plan to send review invitations.
05Why does a SEMrush re-crawl Zap keep running?
Because it feeds its own trigger. If Completed Site Audit watches a campaign and Re-Crawl a Site Audit Campaign restarts that same campaign, every finished audit launches another one, which finishes and starts the Zap again. Each loop costs a task. The fix is to re-crawl a different campaign, or to put a filter between the two steps so only the runs you want go through. Testing each step before publishing makes this visible early.
06What if the SEMrush operation you need is not available?
Then the ready-made steps cannot do it. On Zapier, SEMrush covers Site Audit and review invitations only, with no keyword, ranking or backlink step and no search. API Request (Beta) is the route for other SEMrush features, using your existing connection, but it asks for a method and an address, so it suits someone comfortable with the SEMrush documentation. Writing down the exact gap helps you compare platforms on the operation that matters to you.
07Zapier, Make or n8n for SEMrush?
Decide by criteria, not by ranking. Operations first: on Zapier, SEMrush offers two polling triggers and six actions centred on Site Audit and review invitations. Timing next: the polling delay depends on your Zapier plan. Then cost: each successful action is a task. Finally, the gaps: no search step and nothing outside Site Audit and review invitations. This site also documents SEMrush on Make, so list the steps your scenario needs and check which platform covers every one of them.
