Which social media manager course should you take? The short answer, by profile:
- You will report on social to leadership: the eCornell certificate, $3,750 over 3 months, with a full course on social listening and community management.
- You learn best live, with a portfolio at the end: Noble Desktop, 72 live hours for $2,495.
- You are starting from zero: Meta's certificate on Coursera, 6 beginner courses, with the Meta exam's first attempt free.
- You want an examined credential: DMI's specialist course, about 27 hours and a two-hour exam.
- You want freelance clients fast: ilovecreatives, $899, self-paced.
We compared the syllabi, prices, exams and credentials of 20 programs. Here is what stood out: none of the top Google results for this question compares paid courses with verified prices, and most are written by schools selling their own degree. This ranking is built for working professionals (marketers, managers, team leads) who want to grow into the role.

Becoming a social media manager: one step, one course
The job in brief. A social media manager owns a brand's presence on social platforms: the strategy, the content calendar, the community conversation, paid posts and the reporting to leadership. In smaller companies the role also covers community management, meaning replying, moderating and handling complaints in public.
The guides that rank for this question mostly tell you to get a degree, land a junior role and collect certificates, and then recommend their own programs. None of the ones we read compares paid courses with verified prices and durations. So we split the job into the order in which the skills stack up, and picked the best course for each step, favoring what you can do while keeping your job. Each card gives the price, the time, the credential, its real limit, an alternative and a tip. Our scores out of 5 use the same five criteria across the page.
The 6 steps
The basics: Coursera · Meta Social Media Marketing Professional Certificate
Step 1The skill. A social media manager plans, publishes and measures a brand's presence across platforms, and talks to its community every day. Before strategy, you need the mechanics: how each platform works, how to build a content calendar, how to read basic metrics, and how paid posts fit in.
The main course. Meta's Social Media Marketing Professional Certificate on Coursera is a 6-course series at beginner level. The page estimates about 5 months at 5 hours a week (another part of the page says 10 hours, so plan for somewhere in between). It is built by Meta, the company behind Facebook and Instagram, and leads to the Meta Digital Marketing Associate exam, a proctored test of 105 minutes. Your first attempt is free, and so is one retake.
Who it's for. The marketing coordinator who inherited the company accounts, or the manager who wants to understand the job before hiring for it. It is included in a Coursera Plus subscription, with a 7-day free trial, so it is the cheapest way into the path. An independent review we read calls it worth it for beginners.
Its limit. It is introductory and centered on Meta's own platforms. The same review warns that employers still want proof of results, not just a certificate. The exact price is shown at checkout, not on the course page.
The alternative. Northwestern University's Social Media Marketing Specialization, also on Coursera, runs about 6 months and ends with a shareable certificate, with financial aid available. It suits you if a university name matters more than the Meta exam.
The tip. Run every module on a real account the same week: one post, one reply, one metrics screenshot. By the capstone you will have a small case study, which is exactly what the certificate alone does not give you.

An exam-backed credential: Digital Marketing Institute · Certified Social Media Marketing Specialist
Step 2The skill. Showing a hiring manager that you know the job, not just that you watched videos. That means a credential with a real exam, covering strategy, content, social customer service and measurement.
The main course. The Digital Marketing Institute (DMI) course holds about 27 hours of content across 10 modules, including Social Customer Service and AI-Powered Social Strategy. You get up to 24 weeks to finish, and the average completion time is 8 to 10 weeks. It is assessed by one two-hour exam with a 60% pass mark, included in the course, and a failed exam can be retaken for about €75. DMI's FAQ places its Professional Diploma at level 5 in the UK grading system; ask whether that applies to this specialist course.
Who it's for. The professional who already posts for a brand and wants a structured, examined credential to put on a resume or in an internal review. The social customer service module matters for community work: answering complaints in public is half the job.
Its limit. The price is shown by region at checkout and changes with promotions, so check the figure shown to you at enrollment. DMI is rated 4.3 out of 5 across 371 independent reviews: students praise the support, but several complain that the login portal crashes or that nobody answered them. One reviewer with a few years of experience found it too basic for the price.
The alternative. MSI's Certified Social Media Manager is far shorter: an average of 4 to 6 hours, one year of access, an open-note timed exam and a lifetime certification. It is a quick badge, not a training.
The tip. Ask for the final price in writing before you enroll, with any discount and the retake fee spelled out. If your employer pays, the written quote is what your finance team will want anyway.

Client-ready practice: ilovecreatives · Social Media Manager Course
Step 3The skill. Running accounts for clients: pitching, onboarding, producing content on a schedule and reporting back. This is the step for freelancers, and for in-house people who serve several teams like an internal agency.
The main course. The ilovecreatives Social Media Manager Course costs $899, with a payment plan available. It is self-paced: at about 20 hours a week, the FAQ says you can finish in around two weeks, or a little over a month if you only work on weekends. You get graded assignments, office hours and a Discord community, and a 10% discount if you buy two courses.
Who it's for. The creative who wants to turn social media skills into paid client work quickly, with a community to ask questions. It is the most practical and the cheapest paid course in this path.
Its limit. The course page and FAQ do not mention a certificate, so plan on your portfolio doing the talking. We found almost no independent reviews (one review on a third-party site), only testimonials on the company's own pages. It is built for freelancers, so it fits a corporate team less well.
The alternative. If you want live instruction and a capstone project, Noble Desktop (step 4) costs more but gives you 72 live hours.
The tip. Treat the graded assignments as portfolio pieces from day one. Use a real local business as your practice client if you can: a before-and-after set of metrics is worth more than any certificate.

Live training and a portfolio: Noble Desktop · Social Media Marketing Certificate
Step 4The skill. Working across every major platform and leaving with a portfolio. Hiring managers look at what you made; a live course with a capstone gets you there faster than self-study.
The main course. Noble Desktop's Social Media Marketing Certificate is 72 hours of live, project-based training, in New York City or live online. The program includes eight 1-on-1 mentoring sessions; a self-paced option with video lessons and instructor support for questions is also offered. The 9 modules cover LinkedIn, YouTube, TikTok, Instagram and Facebook, live streaming, then a portfolio and a capstone. Full tuition is $2,495 (the page lists $5,095 before discounts), payable in installments with no interest or fees after a 10% deposit. You leave with a verified digital certificate of completion, and you can retake the course for free within one year.
Who it's for. The employee who learns better with an instructor and fixed hours, or the manager who wants several people trained on the same live program. Noble is licensed by the New York State Education Department.
Its limit. The certificate is a certificate of completion, not an exam. We found no independent reviews of this specific certificate yet. Graduate School USA sells what looks like the same program, with identical text and the same $2,495 price, under its own brand (accredited by ACCET): compare both before you buy, but do not pay twice for one curriculum.
The alternative. If you need a university name on the certificate, eCornell (step 5) costs more and runs 3 months.
The tip. Use the free retake: take the course once, apply it at work for a few months, then sit in again with real questions.

Strategy and community management: eCornell · Social Media Marketing Certificate
Step 5The skill. Moving from posting to managing: listening to what people say about the brand, running community management as a process, and proving the value of social media to leadership with numbers.
The main course. eCornell's Social Media Marketing Certificate costs $3,750 and takes 3 months at 5 to 7 hours of study per week, all online. Its 6 courses include Social Listening and Community Management, and Measuring Social Media Marketing Success. You earn a certificate from the Cornell SC Johnson College of Business and 84 professional development hours (8.4 CEUs, continuing education units that some employers and associations track).
Who it's for. The social media manager who will report to a CMO, or the marketing manager who now supervises a community team. It is the only course in this path with a full module on community management and social listening.
Its limit. At $3,750 it is the second most expensive option here, and it is strategic rather than hands-on: you will not build a portfolio of creative work. The page shows promotions that come and go, so check the current price when you apply.
The alternative. Georgetown (step 6) is shorter, at 6 weeks, and costs a little more.
The tip. Ask your manager to sponsor it as a leadership investment, not a skills course. The CEUs and the Cornell name make it easier to file under professional development budgets.

A fast university credential: Georgetown SCS · Certificate in Social Media Marketing
Step 6The skill. Owning the social media function: a credential that signals seniority when you step into a lead role or move to a larger company.
The main course. Georgetown University's School of Continuing Studies offers a Certificate in Social Media Marketing. Total tuition is $3,995, the program runs 6 weeks online with a required weekly Zoom session, and you must successfully complete all six modules to earn the certificate and 4.8 CEUs (48 contact hours).
Who it's for. The experienced practitioner who wants a recognized university name quickly, without committing to 3 months.
Its limit. It is the most expensive course in this path, for the shortest duration: you pay for the brand as much as for the content. Six weeks is intense if you work full time. It does not replace the hands-on steps; it validates them.
The alternative. eCornell (step 5) costs a little less, runs longer and covers community management explicitly.
The tip. Bring a real company project into the six weeks. A strategy you can present to your own leadership afterwards turns an expensive certificate into a promotion case.

Social media manager courses compared
The table ranks the six courses that have a card, by score. Our score is the average of five criteria: curriculum depth, teaching and format, certification and recognition, value for money, and team fit. Prices are the ones published by each provider in 2026.
Two things stand out. Price does not track quality: the $899 course is the most practical, while the most expensive one is the shortest. And the credential type matters more than the logo: an exam or CEUs prove more than a certificate of completion.

Getting your employer to fund and back the path
The full path costs anywhere from a Coursera subscription to almost $4,000 for a university certificate. For an employee, the real question is who pays and what your team gets out of it. Here is how to pitch it to your manager or your L&D team.
Pitch a business problem, not a course
Use installment plans
Public workforce funding has conditions
Choose the right kind of credential
Train a team on one program
Show the return after each step
- The price is published on the provider's own page, or you have a written quote
- You know whether the credential is an exam, a university certificate or a completion certificate
- Exam and retake fees are included in the budget
- The program covers the platforms your company actually uses
- Installment or employer payment options are confirmed before you enroll
- Each step ends with a deliverable your team can use
Questions about how to become a social media manager
How do I become a social media manager?
Learn the platform basics, get a credential that shows you know the job, then build a portfolio of real accounts with numbers. A cheap start is Meta's certificate on Coursera; an examined credential is DMI's specialist course; live training with a capstone is Noble Desktop at $2,495. Tip: the guides that rank for this question are mostly written by schools selling their own degree, so compare at least two independent options before you pay.
Do I need a degree to be a social media manager?
No. Many guides recommend a degree in marketing or communications, but the courses in this path have no degree requirement, and Meta's certificate starts at beginner level. What hiring managers look at is your portfolio: accounts you ran, content you made and results you can show. A degree helps more for corporate roles with strict HR filters.
Which social media manager certification is worth it?
It depends on what you need to prove. Meta's certificate leads to a proctored Meta exam, DMI's is assessed by a two-hour exam with a 60% pass mark, and eCornell's comes from a university with 8.4 CEUs. A certificate of completion, like Noble Desktop's, proves attendance, not a passed exam. Free vendor courses, such as HubSpot's social media certification or Hootsuite Academy's self-paced courses (its certification itself is paid), are enough to learn a tool, but they do not replace a full course. Tip: pick the credential your target employers mention in job posts, then let your portfolio do the rest.
How long does it take to become a social media manager?
Plan on 3 to 6 months of training while you work. Meta's certificate takes about 5 months at 5 hours a week, DMI averages 8 to 10 weeks, eCornell takes 3 months, Georgetown 6 weeks, and ilovecreatives can be done in about two weeks at 20 hours a week. Building a portfolio with real results takes longer than any course, so start it during step 1.
How much does a social media manager course cost?
From a Coursera subscription to almost $4,000. In this path: ilovecreatives costs $899, Noble Desktop $2,495, eCornell $3,750 and Georgetown $3,995. DMI shows its price by region at checkout. Watch for crossed-out prices and limited-time promotions: Noble lists $5,095 before discounts, for example.
Can my employer pay for a social media course?
Often, yes. Present it as a business need (a community left unanswered, no reporting to leadership) and ask for a written quote. Noble Desktop and eCornell both offer installment plans, which makes approval easier. If you are eligible for public workforce funding, check that the program is approved for it before you apply, since approval and amounts vary by state.
What's the difference between a community manager and a social media manager?
A community manager runs the daily conversation: replying, moderating, handling complaints. A social media manager owns the strategy: platforms, content plan, budget and reporting. In small companies it is the same person. eCornell's Social Listening and Community Management course and DMI's Social Customer Service module cover the community side best in this path.
How much does a social media manager earn?
There is no official salary category for social media managers, so the figures you find online mix different jobs and vary widely. Be careful with the highest ones: some sites quote advertising and promotions managers, a different and more senior role. A portfolio with real results moves your offer more than any certificate.
