What is the best customer data platform (CDP) for SaaS in 2026?

In B2B SaaS, the data that matters is product usage tied to the right customer account. Pick the tool that makes that link at a price your traffic can afford.

For most SaaS companies, the best CDP in 2026 is still Twilio Segment: a free plan, Team from $120 a month, and a group call that ties every user to their account all the way into your CRM. If your product team already lives in PostHog, its built-in CDP saves you a tool. If anonymous traffic is inflating a visitor count, RudderStack bills per event and often costs less. And if your account data already sits in a warehouse, Hightouch or Census push it to Salesforce, HubSpot or Attio.

We compared seven platforms on what actually moves the bill and the risk for SaaS: the billing unit (visitors, events, rows, profiles), account-level support, CRM sync and EU hosting. How we scored

How we compared and scored

A SaaS company doesn't buy a CDP to decorate an architecture diagram. It buys one for three reasons: to know which accounts actually use the product, to get that signal to sales or customer success, and to trigger the right messages during a trial. So we read each vendor's official pricing, their docs on billing, accounts and hosting, and practitioner feedback from developer forums and review sites.

Value for money weighs most, because that's where projects go sideways: a counter that includes anonymous visitors, collected events billed on top of delivered ones, a free plan that stops processing after two overages. Then come features (account level, identity, CRM sync), integrations, ease of use for a team without a data engineer, and support. Scores for Segment, RudderStack, Hightouch, Census, PostHog and Customer.io match the ones on our other pages, so a tool carries the same score across the Labs.

1
Best CDP for most SaaS teams

Twilio Segment

4.2/5

Segment is still the safest place to start. You add one tracking library to your app, and every event (a signup, a teammate invite, an export) flows to your analytics, email and CRM. For B2B SaaS, the deciding feature is the group call: it ties a user to their company. Your sales team sees which accounts use the product.

The catch is the billing unit: monthly tracked visitors. Team starts at $120 a month with 10,000 visitors included. Anonymous visitors, logged-in users and devices each count until you merge them. Send your marketing site and your app into the same workspace and the bill climbs without a single new customer. Above the included volume, Twilio's pricing grid and FAQ quote different overage rates, so get the number in writing.

Two limits most roundups skip. Unified profiles and identity resolution aren't in the Connections plans: they need the CDP plans, on custom pricing. And the EU region (Dublin) is Business-only. If an enterprise customer requires EU data residency, Team won't cut it.

Standout features
  • group call for account-level data
  • Unlimited sources from Team
  • Near-zero setup toward Salesforce
+Pros
  • ✓Widest integration catalog
  • ✓Public pricing up to Team
  • ✓One install for every tool
−Cons
  • ✗Anonymous visitors count toward the bill
  • ✗EU region is Business-only
  • ✗Unified profiles only on custom plans
Verdict

The best pick to tie product usage to accounts and your CRM. Split your marketing site from your app on day one, or the visitor count eats your budget.

2
Best CDP built into product analytics

PostHog

4.2/5

PostHog is a product analytics tool first, but it also works as a CDP: it collects events, transforms them and sends them to other tools in real time or in batches. PostHog itself recommends starting with it as your CDP, using its SDKs, warehouse and destinations. For an early-stage SaaS, that's one less tool to pay for and wire up.

Billing is usage-based with no minimum. The first million analytics events are free every month, as are the first 10,000 destination events and the first million exported rows. Past that, the per-event destination price drops with volume: $0.0005 from 10,001 to 50,000, then $0.00015 from 100,001 to 1 million. Web analytics is included at no extra cost.

Two limits. PostHog admits it may not have every destination a dedicated CDP has, so check your CRM and email tool are there. And if PostHog sits downstream of another CDP, its autocaptured events don't reach the other destinations. For hosting, PostHog runs a separate EU instance in Frankfurt.

Standout features
  • Product analytics and CDP in one tool
  • EU instance in Frankfurt
  • Free tiers every month
+Pros
  • ✓No minimum spend
  • ✓Public, volume-based pricing
  • ✓One less tool to maintain
−Cons
  • ✗Fewer destinations than a dedicated CDP
  • ✗Built for product and engineering teams
  • ✗Three meters to watch
Verdict

The cheapest route for an early-stage SaaS or a team already on PostHog. Check your destinations before making it your only CDP.

3
Best CDP for high volume at a readable price

RudderStack

4.1/5

RudderStack does the same job as Segment (collect events, route them) with two real differences: the code is open source, and the bill follows events, not visitors. For a SaaS whose marketing site draws lots of anonymous traffic, that's often cheaper. For an app where each user fires hundreds of events, the math can flip.

Pricing is public: 250,000 free events a month, then $265 a month for 1 million, 15% off annually. Three details change the bill. Overages apply to total event volume, collected and delivered. The free plan stops processing after your second consecutive month over. And the Starter plan many roundups still quote is closed to new signups.

For B2B SaaS, RudderStack takes more prep than Segment toward Salesforce. Historically it needs the internal Salesforce account ID, which means syncing Salesforce into your warehouse first. Reviewers flag a steep setup and thin onboarding docs, and praise the support and pricing. Unified profiles are Enterprise-only.

Standout features
  • Per-event billing, public price list
  • Reverse ETL on the free plan
  • Open-source code
+Pros
  • ✓Cheaper than Segment on anonymous-heavy traffic
  • ✓15% off annual billing
  • ✓Your data stays in your warehouse
−Cons
  • ✗Collected events are billed too
  • ✗Salesforce sync needs more prep
  • ✗Profiles are Enterprise-only
Verdict

The best volume-to-price ratio if you have a warehouse and someone to run it. Set a volume alert from the free plan on.

4
Best composable CDP for B2B SaaS

Hightouch

4.0/5

Hightouch is the other school: the composable CDP. It doesn't copy your customers into yet another database. It reads your warehouse and pushes segments and fields to your tools. For B2B SaaS, Hightouch speaks your data model: accounts, users, subscriptions, transactions, usage logs and churn metrics. Think an account usage score landing in Salesforce, HubSpot or Attio.

The free plan gives you two active syncs with unlimited destinations and seats. That's enough to prove one use case, like pushing your most active trial accounts to the CRM every day. Everything else is sold via demo, usage-based, with no public price.

The limit is blunt: no warehouse and no one to run it, no value. And every query runs in your warehouse, so your Snowflake or BigQuery bill rises too. One B2B SaaS practitioner put the choice well: either your CRM plus marketing automation is enough, or you go all-in on composable.

Standout features
  • Built around accounts, subscriptions and usage
  • Attio, Salesforce and HubSpot destinations
  • Free plan for a first use case
+Pros
  • ✓Single source of truth in the warehouse
  • ✓No extra copy of your data
  • ✓Unlimited destinations and seats on free
−Cons
  • ✗Useless without a warehouse
  • ✗No public pricing beyond free
  • ✗Warehouse compute costs on top
Verdict

The best pick once your data team has modeled your accounts. Start with one CRM sync before you book a demo.

5
Best usage-based reverse ETL for SaaS

Census (Fivetran Activations)

4.0/5

Census is now part of Fivetran as Fivetran Activations. The job matches Hightouch: read your warehouse and send fields and audiences to your tools. The difference is the meter: you pay per monthly active row, Fivetran's unit.

The Fivetran Free plan includes 3,500 monthly active rows for Activations. For a B2B SaaS syncing a few hundred accounts and their usage scores to Salesforce, that often covers a first flow. Watch out for old comparisons: the legacy Census free plan (2 syncs, 5 seats) is gone, and legacy monthly Census plans end in 2026.

The limit: like any composable tool, Census assumes a clean warehouse. And a row that changes often counts as active, so syncing every user instead of every account pushes the meter up.

Standout features
  • Billed on monthly active rows
  • Part of the Fivetran offer
  • 3,500 free active rows
+Pros
  • ✓One less vendor if you use Fivetran
  • ✓Free start for a first flow
  • ✓Pay as you go
−Cons
  • ✗Warehouse required
  • ✗Legacy Census plans retired
  • ✗Active rows hard to forecast
Verdict

The right pick if Fivetran already loads your data. Sync accounts, not users, to keep the meter low.

6
Best CDP for account-level messaging

Customer.io

3.9/5

Customer.io is a messaging tool (email, push) with its own data layer, Data Pipelines. It takes in events through SDKs, APIs or reverse ETL from your warehouse and routes them to destinations. Its edge for B2B SaaS is objects. You create an Accounts object and message every user on an account, or trigger on the account's state (trial, past due, expanding).

Essentials starts at $100 a month for 5,000 profiles, objects included, with 1 million emails and 2 object types. Each extra profile is $0.009. Premium, from $1,000 a month billed yearly, goes up to 10 object types. There's no free plan, and Data Pipelines isn't priced separately on the page, so ask before you sign.

A real plus for EU customers: you pick a US or EU data center at signup, on every plan. The limit: Customer.io is still a messaging tool. It won't push usage into your CRM as well as Segment or Hightouch.

Standout features
  • Accounts objects for B2B
  • EU data center on every plan
  • Built-in pipelines with reverse ETL
+Pros
  • ✓Messages triggered by product usage
  • ✓Public prices by profile tier
  • ✓EU region from the first plan
−Cons
  • ✗No free plan
  • ✗Data Pipelines price not listed
  • ✗Objects count as profiles
Verdict

The right pick when usage-driven activation email is the priority. Count your accounts in your profiles before you pick a tier.

7
Best lightweight open-source CDP

Jitsu

3.6/5

Jitsu is a lightweight Segment alternative under the MIT license. Self-host it for free or use the hosted version. Its billing rule is the friendliest in this ranking: captured events are always free, and only events sent to a destination count.

The free plan gives you 200,000 events a month and one daily sync. Business is $99 a month for 2 million events, then $40 per million. Ignore roundups that promise 1 million free events: the official page says 200,000.

The limit: fewer connectors and no ready-made unified profile or account level. The pricing page doesn't mention EU hosting, so ask, or self-host the open-source version in your own EU cloud.

Standout features
  • Captured events never billed
  • MIT license, self-hostable
  • Business at $99/month
+Pros
  • ✓Cheapest in this ranking
  • ✓Full control when self-hosted
  • ✓Simple price list
−Cons
  • ✗No ready-made account level
  • ✗Few destinations
  • ✗EU hosting to confirm
Verdict

The right pick for a small technical SaaS that just needs its warehouse filled. Move to Segment or RudderStack when sales needs account usage in the CRM.

Choosing for SaaS

Four questions every SaaS team should ask first

Most CDP roundups are written for retailers and enterprises. B2B SaaS has different questions: accounts rather than lone customers, a trial to convert, a CRM to feed.

Do you actually need a CDP?

Not always. With one product, one CRM and one email tool, your CRM plus marketing automation often does the job. HubSpot already links contacts, companies and email (see our HubSpot review). A CDP earns its place when product usage has to feed three or more tools, or when sales needs to see which trial accounts are active.

Can a product analytics tool do the job?

For analysis, yes. Mixpanel and Amplitude measure usage well, but they aren't CDPs: they don't route events to your CRM and email tools with the same flexibility. PostHog is the exception, with its built-in CDP. To compare them, see our product analytics for SaaS ranking and our Mixpanel and Amplitude reviews.

What does your bill actually count?

Four units are in play. Segment counts tracked visitors (10,000 on Team for $120). RudderStack counts every event, collected and delivered (1 million for $265). Jitsu counts only delivered events (2 million for $99). Census counts active rows, Customer.io counts profiles, accounts included. Anonymous marketing-site traffic costs you at Segment if it lands in the same workspace, and nothing at Jitsu until it's sent somewhere. Convert every quote into your real unit before comparing.

Where does your data live?

Sooner or later an enterprise customer will ask. At Segment, the Dublin region requires Business. PostHog runs an EU instance in Frankfurt and Customer.io offers an EU data center on every plan. With composable tools (Hightouch, Census), data stays in your warehouse, so its region is what counts.

  • List the tools that need product usage: under three, your CRM may be enough.
  • Measure anonymous visitors and events per user before you ask for a quote.
  • Decide whether your core unit is the user or the account, and check the tool handles accounts.
  • Confirm your CRM (Salesforce, HubSpot, Attio) is a supported destination.
  • Get the hosting region in writing if you sell to EU enterprises.
Rollout

Rolling out a CDP in SaaS without blowing the budget

CDP projects that disappoint usually go wrong early: tracking with no plan, accounts badly linked, a meter that balloons. These six steps head off the mistakes practitioners report most.

01

Write your tracking plan before the code

Priority

List the 20 to 30 events that matter for SaaS: signup, teammate invite, first key action, upgrade, churn. Put their properties in a shared spreadsheet. Every useless event costs money at RudderStack and clutters audiences everywhere else.

Format
A shared spreadsheet
02

Tie every user to their account

B2B

Send a group call (or its equivalent) at login, with the account ID and a few traits (plan, seats). Use the same account ID as your CRM, and check the mapping before you start.

Key
Your CRM account ID
03

Split the marketing site from the app

Bill

At Segment, every anonymous marketing-site visitor counts until merged with a logged-in user. Create two sources, and ask whether the marketing site needs to feed the CDP at all or just your analytics tool.

Segment Team
10,000 visitors included
04

Push one signal to the CRM first

Value

Start with one simple CRM field: active users per account over the last week, or the date of the last key action. Sales then knows which trials to chase. The free plans of Hightouch (2 syncs) and Census (3,500 active rows) cover this first case.

Hightouch free
2 active syncs
05

Keep a raw copy of your events

Safety

As one practitioner pointed out at RudderStack's launch: without stored history, you can't replay it into a new tool. Send a raw copy to your own storage or warehouse. When you switch CDPs, it's work, not a rewrite.

Bill

Track the unit that costs you each month: visitors at Segment, events at RudderStack and Jitsu, profiles at Customer.io. On RudderStack's free plan, processing stops after your second consecutive month over: an alert saves you a gap in your data.

FAQ · 8 questions

CDP for SaaS · FAQ

  • CDP vs CRM: what does a SaaS need first?
A CRM, almost always. The CRM manages accounts, deals and conversations. A CDP comes next, to bring product usage into it. As one B2B SaaS practitioner put it: either your CRM plus marketing automation is enough, or you go composable with a warehouse.
  • How much does a CDP cost for SaaS?
From $0 to several thousand dollars a month, depending on the unit. Segment Team starts at $120 a month for 10,000 visitors, RudderStack Growth at $265 for 1 million events, Jitsu Business at $99 for 2 million delivered events, Customer.io at $100 for 5,000 profiles. PostHog, Hightouch and Census start free. Add engineering time and, for composable tools, warehouse compute.
  • How do you tie users to their company in a CDP?
With a group call. In Segment, the group call links a user to an account ID, which Segment maps to the Salesforce Account object. In Customer.io, you create an Accounts object. With composable tools, you join in the warehouse. Either way, use the same account ID as your CRM.
  • Do you need a data warehouse for a SaaS CDP?
Not to start. Segment, PostHog, RudderStack, Jitsu and Customer.io work without one. Hightouch and Census are useless without one. A sound path: start with an event collector that also fills a warehouse, then add composable once someone on the data side can own it.
  • Can a SaaS keep customer data in the EU?
Yes, but not at the same price everywhere. PostHog has a Frankfurt instance and Customer.io an EU data center on every plan. Segment's Dublin region requires Business. RudderStack processes and stores data in the region you choose. With composable tools, your warehouse region is what counts.
  • When does a SaaS need a CDP?
When product usage has to feed three or more tools, or when sales needs to see the most active trial accounts. Before that, product analytics plus your CRM is enough. The tell: you're copying lists of active users from one tool to another by hand.
  • Should you switch from Segment to RudderStack?
When your tracked visitors grow faster than your events. Switching is work but not a rewrite, since both use similar calls. Check your CRM sync first, account ID included. Our Segment alternatives page covers the migration.
  • How long does it take to roll out a CDP in SaaS?
Less for a first flow than for clean tracking. Installing the library and sending one signal to the CRM fits on a free plan. The real time goes into the tracking plan, the account level and data quality. A malformed timestamp, for instance, has historically failed an entire call at RudderStack.
