Segment alternatives: where to go and how to migrate without losing your history

Seven destinations, one for each reason to leave, and an eight-step migration plan.

The short answer: RudderStack if you want the closest drop-in replacement, with a compatible SDK and per-event pricing. Jitsu if you're on a tight budget or want to self-host. PostHog if you want product analytics and routing in one tool. Hightouch if your warehouse is already the source of truth. Freshpaint for healthcare, mParticle for enterprise, Snowplow for demanding data teams. One thing before you choose: Replay is a Segment Business feature. On Free or Team, start copying data to S3 or a warehouse before you cancel. We compared these seven destinations and checked their public pricing in 2026.

Rankings are editorial: a sponsored spot is always labeled on its card, and no affiliate link changes a score.

The real reasons

Why teams leave Segment, and why it's tricky

Segment is still the benchmark for collecting an event once and sending it everywhere. Reviewers mostly praise how easy it is to integrate, and the catalog runs to several hundred destinations. We score it 4.2 out of 5, the same as in our customer data platform ranking. But in reviews, "expensive" and "pricing issues" top the list of complaints. Here are the six reasons people leave.

You pay for traffic, not value

Segment bills per MTU, a monthly tracked user. Anonymous visitors who never log in count too. A one-time visitor from social costs the same as a loyal customer. The jump is steep: 1,000 MTUs free, then Team from $120/month for 10,000 MTUs, with every block above that added on. On a high-bounce site, this is the line that blows up.

Business pricing is a black box

Past Team, everything is a quote: MTU volume, multiple warehouses, add-ons. No public number tells you what next year will cost. For a finance lead, that's the hardest line to defend in budget review.

The features you need sit at the top

EU data residency, HIPAA eligibility, Replay and unlimited warehouses all require Business. Protocols, the data-quality layer, is a paid add-on on every plan. Identity resolution and audiences (Unify, Engage) are part of a separate CDP offer, also quote-only.

EU residency costs extra

Segment's EU region (Dublin) is Business-only. You pick it when you create the workspace and can't change it later, and destinations don't all guarantee EU residency. If GDPR is a hard line, RudderStack, Jitsu and Snowplow can run on your own EU servers.

The free plan locks fast

On Free, going over 1,000 MTUs locks your workspace: data still flows, but you can't change anything. A second overage within six months and data stops. A campaign that works too well can cut off your tracking.

Twilio's strategy shapes the roadmap

Twilio bought Segment in 2020. In 2023, layoffs hit Segment's sales teams; after a strategic review, Twilio decided not to sell it and said it wants to right-size Segment's cost base. There's no evidence of a customer exodus. But if you're signing a three-year deal, it belongs on the table.

The 7 alternatives

Segment alternatives, tool by tool

For each tool: why switch, who it's for, the catch, how to migrate from Segment, and what it costs. We compared each vendor's public pricing and feedback from teams that made the move. Units differ (users, events, rows), so read each card to the end before comparing two numbers.

01

RudderStack: the closest drop-in replacement

Closest match

Why switch to RudderStack. No other tool on this list is as close to Segment. Its JavaScript SDK speaks the same API: in practice analytics becomes rudderanalytics, and your track, identify and page calls stay as they are. The real difference is the bill. RudderStack charges per event, not per tracked user, so a media site or a store full of one-visit anonymous traffic pays for what visitors do, not for showing up. The core is open source, and it sits on top of your warehouse instead of keeping its own copy.

Who it's for. Engineering teams that want off Segment without rewriting their tracking, and teams already on Snowflake, BigQuery or Redshift.

Who it's not for. A marketing team with no developer. User reviews keep landing on the same complaint: setup and configuration take time, and the docs have gaps.

The catch. The free plan covers 250,000 events a month; after the second consecutive month over the limit, processing stops. Growth starts at $265/month for 1 million events ($225 billed annually, 15% off), with tiers at 3, 5, 7, 10 and 25 million. Profiles, HIPAA eligibility, SSO and historical replay all sit in Enterprise, on a quote. And RudderStack doesn't store your data: your backup is your warehouse or your S3 bucket.

How to migrate from Segment. There's a detailed official migration guide. Three settings matter: read Segment's anonymous ID from the ajs_anonymous_id cookie (anonymousIdOptions), run dual tracking on a slice of users, and connect Segment as a RudderStack source for old mobile app versions. Your tracking plan imports. Watch one trap several teams hit: identify traits land under context instead of the top level, as Segment does it. Your dbt models can break silently.

02

Jitsu: the open-source pick on a tight budget

Budget

Why switch to Jitsu. Jitsu ships under the MIT license, so you can self-host it for free with no volume cap. Its cloud version is also the cheapest on this list at modest volume. It bills active events, meaning events actually delivered to a destination. Captured-but-unsent events are free, and one event sent to three tools counts once. Jitsu also advertises Segment API compatibility.

Who it's for. Small engineering teams, early-stage startups, and anyone who wants event data on servers they control.

Who it's not for. A company that needs hundreds of prebuilt connectors, identity resolution or marketing audiences. Jitsu collects and routes, nothing more.

The catch. The destination catalog is shorter than Segment's, so check every one you use before you commit. Free cloud stops at 200,000 active events a month. Business is $99/month for 2 million events, then $40 per extra million, plus $20 for data syncs. Self-hosted, the software is free, but the server, database and monitoring are on you.

How to migrate from Segment. Swap the Segment SDK for Jitsu's and keep your calls, then rebuild destinations one by one. Run both pipelines in parallel for a few days and compare volumes in your warehouse before you cut Segment.

03

PostHog: product analytics and routing in one place

All-in-one

Why switch to PostHog. Plenty of teams run Segment for one job: piping events into Mixpanel or Amplitude. PostHog does the analytics and the routing in the same tool. Its data pipelines push events to other destinations in real time or in batches, and you pay for usage with no minimum plan.

Who it's for. Startups and product teams that want to understand app usage and feed two or three other tools without paying for two subscriptions.

Who it's not for. A company routing data to thirty marketing tools. The destination list is much shorter than Segment's, and the request for more destinations is still open on PostHog's side.

The catch. Pricing is granular and stacks up. Product analytics includes 1 million events a month. Data pipelines also include 1 million events, then $0.000062 per event between 1 and 2 million, getting cheaper after that. Realtime destinations include 10,000 triggers, then $0.0005 each; batch exports include 1 million rows, then $0.000015 per row. Run the math on your real volume before comparing to Segment.

How to migrate from Segment. No compatibility layer here: you replace the SDK and set destinations up again. Since every call gets touched anyway, it's the right moment to prune your tracking plan.

Hightouch: when your warehouse is already the source of truth

Warehouse-native

Why switch to Hightouch. Hightouch flips Segment's model. Your customer data already lives in your warehouse (Snowflake, BigQuery, Databricks), and Hightouch activates it from there into your marketing tools. That's what people call a composable CDP. Hightouch advertises no MTU limits on its CDP plans, so you're not paying per anonymous visitor. For collection it has its own module (Hightouch Events), or you keep a lightweight collector.

Who it's for. Teams with a well-kept warehouse and someone who writes SQL.

Who it's not for. A small business without a warehouse. Without one, there's nothing to activate, and building a warehouse just for this costs more than Segment.

The catch. The only free plan is Basic, with two active Reverse ETL syncs (data flowing from the warehouse back into your tools). The composable CDP and the marketing tier are sold after a demo, with no public price. Some reviewers call it expensive as volume grows.

How to migrate from Segment. Two routes. Collect with Hightouch Events, or keep a collector (RudderStack, Jitsu) writing to the warehouse and let Hightouch activate audiences from there. Segment Engage audiences don't export: rebuild them in SQL or in the visual builder.

Freshpaint: built for healthcare and sensitive data

Healthcare

Why switch to Freshpaint. Freshpaint specializes in privacy-first data collection for healthcare companies. At Segment, HIPAA eligibility (with a signed BAA) requires the Business plan. For Freshpaint it's the whole product, and it claims a JavaScript SDK that's 100% compatible with Segment's.

Who it's for. Hospitals, clinics, digital health apps, insurers, and any team handling PHI.

Who it's not for. A regular SaaS or ecommerce store. You'd pay for a specialization you don't need.

The catch. No public pricing: the Comply, Perform and Scale plans are all quote-based. Expect a sales cycle with a demo.

How to migrate from Segment. According to Freshpaint, the SDK swaps in without touching your calls. Run dual tracking anyway and check that each destination receives the same fields.

mParticle: the enterprise CDP for mobile-heavy brands

Enterprise

Why switch to mParticle. mParticle plays in the same league as Segment Business: big brands, high-volume mobile apps, strict data governance. Rokt acquired it in 2025 for around $300 million.

Who it's for. Large companies with a data team, several mobile apps and serious data-quality requirements.

Who it's not for. Small businesses and startups. Pricing and the sales process are built for large annual contracts.

The catch. No public pricing: mParticle's pricing page now redirects to Rokt's site. Plan for several weeks between the first demo and a signature.

How to migrate from Segment. Migration runs with vendor support. Ask for a written plan: ID mapping, dual tracking, destination QA.

Snowplow: for data teams that want full control

Data teams

Why switch to Snowplow. Snowplow collects highly detailed events, each validated against a schema you define. The payoff is clean data the moment it lands in your warehouse, where Segment makes you buy the Protocols add-on for data quality.

Who it's for. Data teams doing advanced analysis who want structured event data in their own warehouse.

Who it's not for. A team that wants to drop in a script and move on. You design schemas before you collect anything.

The catch. The license changed: from Apache 2.0 to a community license, then to a Limited Use license in 2024. Free self-hosting is no longer the default, and pricing is quote-based. If you host it, you need a real engineering team to run it.

How to migrate from Segment. Nothing carries over as is. You rewrite your tracking plan as schemas, event by event. Slow, but a good excuse to delete the events nobody reads.

The 7 alternatives side by side

Our default pick: RudderStack for an engineering team, PostHog for a startup that wants one tool. The rest depends on your warehouse and your industry. For reference, 10,000 tracked users on Segment cost at least $120/month, no matter how many events they send.

Migration plan

Migrate off Segment in eight steps

Order matters. Each step protects something: your history, your IDs, your dashboards, your ad audiences.

01

Inventory everything in your Segment workspace

Day 1

List your sources (web, app, server), destinations, Functions, tracking plan and Engage audiences. Pull your numbers from the Usage tab too: MTUs and API calls over the last three months.

You'll use this sheet twice: to get comparable quotes, and as your checklist on cutover day.

Time
half a day
If rushed
a forgotten destination
02

Secure your history before you cancel

Critical

This is the step everyone skips. Replay is Business-only. On Free or Team, turn on a warehouse or the S3 destination today: the copy only includes data that arrives after you enable it, so every day counts.

Data already written to your warehouse stays there after you disconnect. That archive is what your new tool will read from.

Replay
Business plan only
S3 copy
from activation onward
03

Rerun the numbers in the new pricing model

Savings

Divide monthly events by tracked users. If each user fires thousands of events (a heavily used app), Segment's per-MTU price can still win. If they fire a few dozen (media site, anonymous traffic), per-event pricing from RudderStack, Jitsu or PostHog almost always wins.

Do this before you sign, not after.

Rule
events ÷ users
04

Install the new SDK and keep the anonymous ID

Your new collector has to pick up the anonymous ID Segment already set in the browser (the ajs_anonymous_id cookie). Otherwise every visitor becomes two people, attribution breaks and your counts double.

Mind the format: with Analytics.js 2.0, Segment stopped wrapping the cookie value in quotes. Check what your new tool actually reads.

If rushed
users counted twice
05

Run both pipelines side by side

1 to 2 weeks

Turn the new tool on for part of your traffic (one country, one cohort) and compare warehouse tables day by day. Check volumes, but mostly shape: table names, column names, traits sitting under context instead of the top level.

dbt models and dashboards break first. Fix them during this window, not after cutover.

Time
one to two weeks
Compare
volumes and schemas
06

Rebuild destinations and transformations

Recreate every destination on your list and check transformations: event renames, email hashing for ad platforms, filters. Segment Functions get rewritten in the new tool's transformation language.

Send a test event to each tool and confirm it arrives with the right fields.

If rushed
empty ad audiences
07

Handle old mobile app versions

Some users won't update your app for months, and they keep sending events to Segment. Connect Segment as a source in your new tool to capture that traffic.

Shut the bridge down once the leftover traffic is negligible in your version stats.

Time
bridge may run for months
08

Cut over, clean up, then cancel

Last day

Move all traffic to the new tool, remove the Segment snippet from your site and clear its cookies and localStorage. Cancel last.

Two billing details: on annual plans, overages are billed at the end of each month and refunds are rare; if you downgrade from Team to Free, proration and final overages are still charged.

Migration pitfalls

What makes a Segment migration fail

The same mistakes show up in engineering threads and vendor guides. None of them are dramatic. They're oversights, and each one costs weeks of data.

Cutting Segment with no archive

Without a warehouse or S3 copy running before you cancel, your history stays with Segment, and only Business can replay it. A practitioner raised it the day RudderStack launched: without your own storage, you can't replay the past into a new tool. Archive first, switch second.

Losing the anonymous ID

If the new SDK mints its own IDs, every known visitor becomes a stranger. Funnels and attribution reset to zero. Carry over the ajs_anonymous_id cookie and test it in a browser that already has history.

Breaking the warehouse without noticing

Same events, different tables: column names, traits moved under context. Dashboards show zeros and nobody knows why. Compare schemas during dual tracking and fix dbt models before cutover.

Assuming everything has an equivalent

Unify, Engage and Protocols have no one-to-one replacement. RudderStack Profiles is Enterprise, Hightouch audiences need a warehouse. List what you actually use and price what's missing.

Underestimating self-hosting

The software is free; running it isn't. Server, Postgres, storage, monitoring, upgrades. Snowplow needs a real team. Count an engineer's time each month before you call it cheaper.

Comparing prices without comparing units

Segment bills users, RudderStack and Jitsu bill events, PostHog bills events and exported rows. A heavily used app can pay more per event. Run it on your real volume. If analytics is the main job, our Mixpanel alternatives and Amplitude alternatives pages fill in the rest, along with our guide to switching from Google Analytics.

FAQ · 8 questions

Questions we get about leaving Segment

  • Is there a free or open-source Segment alternative?

Yes. Jitsu is MIT-licensed and free to self-host with no volume cap; its cloud plan includes 200,000 active events a month. RudderStack has an open-source core and a free plan at 250,000 events. Snowplow is no longer really open source since its 2024 move to a Limited Use license.

  • How much does Segment cost per MTU?

Free covers 1,000 MTUs a month. Team starts at $120/month for 10,000 MTUs, with ten seats and a 14-day trial. Business is a quote. Overage blocks above Team follow a tiered schedule, and Segment's own pricing page gives two different figures, so get the exact rate in writing from your rep.

  • Is RudderStack cheaper than Segment?

With heavy anonymous traffic, almost always; at small scale, not necessarily. Segment Team starts at $120/month, RudderStack Growth at $265 ($225 billed annually). It comes down to events per user: a few dozen and RudderStack wins; thousands and you need to redo the math.

  • Does Segment offer EU data residency or HIPAA?

Both, but only on Business. The EU region is in Dublin, chosen at workspace creation and fixed after that; data sent to the wrong region has been rejected since 2025. HIPAA eligibility requires a signed BAA. Destinations keep their own hosting rules either way.

  • How do I migrate from Segment without losing data?

Turn on a warehouse or the S3 destination before you cancel; the copy starts at activation, not before. Full Replay is Business-only. Your new tool can then read from that archive, which is exactly what RudderStack's founder told worried engineers at launch.

  • Segment vs Hightouch: do I need a warehouse?

For Hightouch, yes: it activates data that already lives in Snowflake, BigQuery or Databricks. For RudderStack, Jitsu or PostHog, no, they collect and route on their own. Either way, a warehouse is your best insurance against losing history.

  • Is PostHog a real Segment replacement?

For a startup feeding one analytics tool and a couple of destinations, yes, and it removes a subscription. For a company routing to dozens of marketing tools, not yet: its destination catalog is much shorter. Our Mixpanel review and Amplitude review help if you're weighing analytics tools too.

  • Can I keep Segment and automate around it?

Yes, if the price still works for you. Our guides to Segment in Make and Segment in n8n show how to send events without code. RudderStack has a Make module too, handy during dual tracking.
