What's the best dedicated server for a hosting business in 2026?

The one that keeps your margin after licenses and IPs, and gives you time to deal with a bad customer. For most resellers, that's OVHcloud Rise, from $70 a month.

Reselling hosting means renting a whole physical machine (a dedicated server, or bare metal) and splitting it into accounts with a control panel such as WHM/cPanel or Plesk. The server price is only the first line of the bill. Setup fees, extra IPv4 addresses, the panel license and the hours you spend on security all come on top.

The short answer: OVHcloud is the best place to start, with DDoS protection on every dedicated server and IPs you can move between machines. Hetzner gives you the most hardware per euro and lets you cancel anytime, but it no longer sells new cPanel or Plesk licenses. Liquid Web is the pick if you want a US provider to run the server for you, with cPanel included. o2switch is a fully managed box in France with 100 cPanel accounts in the price, and Scaleway bills bare metal by the hour.

A lot of "best reseller server" lists rank VPS plans as dedicated servers. We left out any offer built on virtual cores.

Each provider keeps the currency it shows on its own site: OVHcloud US and Liquid Web in dollars, the European providers in euros, all before tax. The "Main catch" column is the one thing we'd want to know before signing. InMotion, often cited for WHM reselling, isn't here: its server price wasn't readable on its official page.

How we compared

How we compared and scored

The pages ranking for this search are mostly affiliate lists. They put managed cPanel hosts on top, quote one starting price, and skip the costs that decide a reseller's margin: the setup fee, extra IPv4 pricing, the cPanel license and what happens when a customer gets an abuse complaint.

We read each provider's official pricing, network options and contract terms, then went through hosting forums and public customer reviews. InMotion is not ranked: its server price wasn't readable on its official page. IONOS is out for the same reason.

The five criteria carry equal weight. It's the grid of our general dedicated server ranking, so a provider keeps the same score everywhere on the site. For a reseller, extra IP pricing and the panel license break ties between two close scores.

Best overall

OVHcloud

4.2/5

OVHcloud is a French provider that also sells in the US, and its dedicated range is built with resellers in mind: one of its use-case menus is literally "Resellers". On the US site, the Rise-1 starts at $70 a month with a matching $70 setup fee, waived on 12-month terms. The Rise line runs on an Intel Xeon-E 2386G (6 cores, 12 threads) with 32 to 128 GB of RAM and NVMe drives in software RAID.

The reseller value sits in what's included. OVHcloud's anti-DDoS system is included with all its dedicated servers; on its European ranges it also covers extra IPs at no charge. Traffic in and out is unlimited and free outside the Asia-Pacific data centers. Extra IPs ("Additional IPs") come in blocks up to a /24 and move between your servers from the control panel or the API, so a customer keeps the same address when you migrate hardware. Each IP can get a virtual MAC, handy if you run VMs.

Rise comes with a 99.90% uptime commitment. When your contracts need more, Advance (from $147 a month) moves to 99.95% network availability with service credits, on AMD EPYC 4244P hardware with DDR5 and 3 Gbps of public bandwidth. cPanel and Plesk licenses can be ordered with the server.

The downside is support on anything administrative. Billing and account issues can drag for weeks, and resellers on older budget lines reported periods where failover IP orders were blocked.

Standout features
  • Anti-DDoS included on every dedicated server
  • IPs that move between your servers
  • Uptime commitment with credits on Advance
+Pros
  • ✓Unmetered traffic
  • ✓Setup fee waived on 12-month terms
  • ✓cPanel or Plesk ordered with the server
−Cons
  • ✗Setup fee equal to one month
  • ✗Slow on billing and account issues
  • ✗Panel license prices only shown at checkout
Verdict

The safest first box for a hosting business. Included DDoS protection and movable IPs save you a bad night the first time a customer gets hit or outgrows a server. Move up to Advance once your contracts promise a specific uptime.

Most hardware per dollar

Hetzner

4.1/5

Hetzner is a German provider that sells more hardware per euro than anyone in this list. The AX42 costs €99 a month before VAT for an AMD Ryzen 7 PRO 8700GE (8 cores), 64 GB of DDR5 ECC and two 512 GB NVMe drives, with a guaranteed 1 Gbps port and unlimited traffic. It lives in Falkenstein, Germany, or Helsinki, Finland. Hetzner shows its prices in euros, before VAT.

Its IP pricing is the clearest we found. An extra IPv4 is €1.70 a month plus €4.90 setup; a failover IP you can switch between servers is €4.20. Subnets are published too: a /29 (6 usable IPs) is €13.60 a month, a /25 (126 IPs) €217.60. They follow RIPE rules, so you'll have to justify the need.

Two things to know first. Since 2025, Hetzner no longer sells new cPanel or Plesk licenses: you install a free panel or buy your license from the vendor. And abuse handling is strict. Resellers say Hetzner accepts that you host third parties, but expects a reply to each complaint fast, often within 24 hours, before it blocks an IP or the server. One customer lost access to 13 servers and the whole account over a late payment.

Standout features
  • 64 GB DDR5 ECC on the AX42
  • No minimum term
  • Published subnet pricing up to a /25
+Pros
  • ✓Clearest IP pricing in this list
  • ✓DDoS protection and firewall included
  • ✓Cheaper refurbished servers
−Cons
  • ✗No cPanel or Plesk at checkout
  • ✗Short deadline on abuse complaints
  • ✗Data centers in Germany and Finland only for this model
Verdict

The best hardware for the money if you can run a server yourself and answer complaints the same day. If your customers expect cPanel, or nobody on your side checks email on weekends, pick another provider.

Managed with cPanel, US

Liquid Web

3.9/5

Liquid Web is the name that tops most US reseller lists, and for once the ranking makes sense: its dedicated servers are managed. The entry server, an Intel Xeon E-2134, costs $205.70 a month and comes with cPanel, a dedicated IP, DDoS protection and 10 TB of bandwidth. Liquid Web advertises 99.99% uptime.

Its managed servers include cPanel, a dedicated IP, DDoS protection and 10 TB of bandwidth, with 99.99% uptime advertised. You create WHM accounts and deal with your customers. The cPanel license being in the price also takes the most volatile line off your bill.

The catch is cost. At $205.70 you pay roughly three times OVHcloud's Rise-1 for older hardware. The math works if the server replaces a few hours of admin work each month. It doesn't if you already know how to run Linux.

Standout features
  • cPanel included in the price
  • Server managed and patched for you
  • 99.99% uptime advertised
+Pros
  • ✓DDoS protection included
  • ✓10 TB of bandwidth
  • ✓Dedicated IP included
−Cons
  • ✗$205.70 a month to start
  • ✗Older CPU at that price
  • ✗Less control than a raw bare metal box
Verdict

The pick for a US agency that wants cPanel and doesn't want to own security. You pay for the hands-off part, so compare it with what a part-time sysadmin would cost you.

Managed with cPanel, EU

o2switch

3.8/5

o2switch is a French host based in Clermont-Ferrand, with its own network and data centers in France. Its dedicated server is fully managed by o2switch: you don't get root access. In exchange, the o2switch team runs the system, security and updates, and monitoring is included.

It costs €149 a month before VAT, while stock lasts, for a Xeon E5-2630L v4 (20 cores, 40 threads), 64 GB of DDR4 ECC, two 250 GB SSDs in RAID 1 and up to 100 cPanel accounts. That makes it the cheapest way in this list to get cPanel on your own hardware. You create the hosting accounts yourself.

The limits: an older CPU generation, only 250 GB of storage for your clients' sites, backups and mail, and the 30-day money-back guarantee doesn't apply to dedicated servers. One agency hosting client sites there reported several sites down for days, so keep an off-site backup.

Standout features
  • 100 cPanel accounts in the price
  • OS and security managed for you
  • Data centers in France
+Pros
  • ✓No panel license to buy
  • ✓Monitoring included
  • ✓Highly rated support
−Cons
  • ✗No root access
  • ✗250 GB of storage
  • ✗Offer limited to available stock
Verdict

A strong fit if your clients are in Europe and you want cPanel without the admin work. At €149 with the license included, it often costs less than bare metal plus cPanel. If you need root, look elsewhere.

Hourly billing

Scaleway

3.4/5

Scaleway is a French cloud provider with two dedicated lines. Elastic Metal is ordered like a cloud instance and billed by the hour from €0.091, or by the month from €32.99. On monthly billing there's a commitment fee equal to one month per server; hourly billing has none. Dedibox, the older line, starts at €4.99 a month.

For IPs, a Dedibox failover IP costs €1.99 a month and a /27 block (32 addresses) €59.99 a month, which requires the Business support level. Every server includes one IPv4. A private network between Elastic Metal servers costs €9.99 to €29.99 a month depending on speed.

Two reasons it sits last. Dedibox Pro and Core prices move with demand and stock, and they're hard to read. And public customer reviews are harsh: OS installs taking more than 12 hours, a disk in bad health causing constant crashes. If paying customers live on it, run a second server.

Standout features
  • Hourly billing on bare metal
  • Dedibox Start from €4.99
  • Data centers in France
+Pros
  • ✓No commitment on hourly billing
  • ✓Failover IP at €1.99
  • ✓Private network between servers
−Cons
  • ✗One-month commitment fee on monthly billing
  • ✗Hard-to-read Dedibox pricing
  • ✗Poor reviews on reliability
Verdict

Useful for one-off jobs: a migration, a staging box, a traffic spike. For day-to-day customer hosting, OVHcloud and Hetzner give you more peace of mind.

Real cost

What a reseller server really costs you

The "from" price is one line out of four. To know if reselling pays, add the server, its setup fee, your extra IPs and the panel license.

The cPanel license

Often the biggest line. On bare metal, cPanel is sold in account tiers and the price has risen sharply in recent years. One host on a hosting forum put it bluntly: on a 100-account license, a big chunk of the server budget goes straight to cPanel. Liquid Web and o2switch include it; Hetzner sells neither cPanel nor Plesk anymore. Price out a free panel and get a Plesk quote before you commit.

Extra IPs

An extra IPv4 is €1.70 a month at Hetzner plus €4.90 setup, and €1.99 for a Scaleway failover IP. With 30 customers who each want their own IP, that's around €51 to €60 a month on top of the server. At Hetzner, subnets need a justification under RIPE rules.

Setup and commitment

OVHcloud charges one month of rent as a setup fee ($70 on Rise-1). Hetzner charges €49. Scaleway Elastic Metal asks for a one-month commitment on monthly billing. Your first month often costs double the headline price.
  • Add server, setup, IPs and license before you set your resale price.
  • Check that DDoS protection covers extra IPs, not just the main one.
  • Ask how abuse complaints reach you and how long you have to answer.
  • Use movable IPs so you can change hardware without touching customer DNS.
Root or managed

Who handles security: you or the provider?

Root access gives you full freedom and full responsibility. A managed server takes both away. The right call depends on who on your team answers at 2 a.m. when a customer site gets hacked.

Root: OVHcloud, Hetzner, Scaleway

You install the OS, panel, firewall and backups, and you apply security updates. The provider only looks after hardware and network. It's cheaper, but someone has to know how.

Managed: Liquid Web, o2switch

The provider runs the OS, security and monitoring. You create cPanel accounts and handle your customers. You can't install whatever you like at the system level, but you don't have to either.

Abuse complaints

Either way, you answer when a customer's site sends spam or hosts a phishing page. At Hetzner, a complaint left unanswered can get your IP blocked. Set up a dedicated abuse inbox that someone reads every day.
  • Write into your terms what you do when a customer gets an abuse complaint.
  • Keep an off-site backup of every customer site with another provider.
  • Decide who covers alerts on weekends.
Reseller tips

Six habits that protect your margin and your customers

What long-time resellers keep repeating on hosting forums, whatever the provider.

01

Buy movable IPs from day one

Network

OVHcloud Additional IPs and Hetzner or Scaleway failover IPs can be moved to another server from the panel or the API. When you upgrade hardware, you move the IP and customers see nothing: no DNS change, no propagation wait.

Hetzner failover IP
€4.20 a month
Scaleway failover IP
€1.99 a month
02

Price cPanel per account, not per server

Margin

cPanel is sold in account tiers. Divide the license by the number of customers you actually host: under 30 accounts, the license can cost more per customer than the server. At that size, a free panel such as HestiaCP protects your margin better.

Included at o2switch
Up to 100 cPanel accounts
03

Run a dedicated abuse inbox

Trap

Providers send complaints about your customers to your account email. If it's checked once a week, you risk a block. Use a dedicated address, forward it to your phone, and reply even if it's only to say you're on it: resellers say providers give time to those who answer.

Target response
Under 24 hours
04

Look at the term before paying setup

Savings

At OVHcloud, setup equals one month of rent on Rise and Advance. If you know you'll keep the server, commit for 12 months or more: OVHcloud then waives the setup fee. At Hetzner, the €49 setup is fixed, but you can cancel whenever you like.

OVHcloud Rise-1 (US)
$70 setup
Hetzner AX42
€49 setup
05

Check refurbished servers for backups

Savings

Hetzner's Server Auction sells used servers from €72.70 a month. For a backup or standby box, it's the simplest way to get a second machine without doubling your bill.

Entry price
€72.70 a month
06

Keep a second server somewhere else

Safety

Any account can get suspended, any disk can fail, any data center can go down. Copy your customers' sites every night to a different provider. When you need to switch, you restore and repoint the IP or DNS instead of emailing thirty customers that they're offline.

Frequency
One backup a night
FAQ · 8 questions

Dedicated servers for resellers · FAQ

  • Can I resell hosting on a rented dedicated server?
Yes, it's one of the most common uses of dedicated servers at OVHcloud, Hetzner or Liquid Web. You stay responsible for your customers' sites in the provider's eyes. Read the acceptable use policy: it spells out what you must do when a customer sends spam or hosts illegal content.
  • Do I need WHM/cPanel to resell hosting?
No. cPanel is the panel customers know best, but its license is sold in account tiers and has risen sharply in recent years. A free panel like HestiaCP costs nothing; get a Plesk or DirectAdmin quote. If you want cPanel without paying it separately, Liquid Web and o2switch include it.
  • Dedicated server or VPS for a reseller business?
A VPS is fine for a few sites, but you share the CPU with the provider's other customers. For reselling, a dedicated server gives stable performance and more IP options. Watch out for "dedicated" plans that mention vCores: those are virtual servers.
  • How many IP addresses do I need?
One main IP is enough to serve many HTTPS sites, thanks to SNI, which serves several certificates on one address. Add extra IPs for customers who send a lot of email, so their reputation stays separate. In Europe, beyond a few IPs, providers like Hetzner ask you to justify the need under RIPE rules.
  • What happens when one of my customers gets an abuse complaint?
The provider forwards it to you and waits for an answer. At Hetzner, resellers talk about roughly 24 hours before an IP or server gets blocked. Reply fast, suspend the account at fault if needed, and keep a record of what you did.
  • Is OVHcloud or Hetzner better for a hosting reseller?
OVHcloud if you want DDoS protection on every server, movable addresses and a US price in dollars. Hetzner if you want the most RAM for the money and no minimum term, and you can live without cPanel.
  • Can I get a dedicated server without a contract?
Yes at Hetzner: no minimum term, cancel anytime, you only pay the €49 setup. Scaleway Elastic Metal also bills by the hour with no commitment. On monthly billing, Scaleway asks for one month, and OVHcloud charges a setup fee equal to one month.
  • How do I move customer sites to a new dedicated server?
Use your panel's transfer tool, in cPanel or Plesk, to copy accounts, then switch over. With a movable IP, you move it to the new server and nothing changes for customers. Otherwise, lower your DNS TTL the day before so the change goes through quickly.
