Which DDoS-protected dedicated server actually stays online?

Four hosts compared on what the protection really covers: layers, reaction time, game traffic, and firewall rules.

Short answer: OVHcloud if you want the most complete protection with no add-on to buy, Hetzner if price comes first and you mostly serve web traffic, IONOS if you want a support team you can actually call, Kimsufi for a side project at about $11 a month. Whatever box you pick, put Cloudflare in front of any of the four as an add-on for a website, because no host's network-level DDoS filter handles application attacks (layer 7, the HTTP requests) well.

In 2026, "DDoS protection included" shows up on nearly every dedicated server listing. It tells you nothing about what matters: which attacks get filtered, how fast, with which firewall rules, and what happens to a UDP game server. We compared the official pages, the technical docs, and sysadmin threads on hosting forums to answer those four questions.

Pick by profile. Website or store: Hetzner or OVHcloud Rise, plus Cloudflare. Game server (Minecraft, Rust, FiveM): OVHcloud Game. API with demanding clients: OVHcloud Rise or Advance. Hobby project: Kimsufi, if you accept its limits.

The table that settles it

What DDoS protection actually covers, host by host

A DDoS (distributed denial of service) attack buries your server under traffic from thousands of machines. It hits at two levels. Layers 3 and 4 are network attacks: UDP floods, SYN floods, DNS or NTP amplification. They saturate your bandwidth, and only your host can scrub them upstream. Layer 7 is the application level: thousands of HTTP requests that look like real visitors. Network filtering often lets those through, so your web server, or a service like Cloudflare, has to stop them.

Rank follows the quality of the protection for a dedicated server; Cloudflare sits in the table as an add-on, with no rank or score (see Cloudflare alternatives). The score out of 5 rates the whole offer and matches our best dedicated server ranking.

What gets filtered, and howEntry price and firewall
OVHcloudIncluded everywhere, capacity publishedAlways-on detection, automatic mitigation, no extra cost whatever the attack size. Filtering capacity: several Tbps worldwide. 1
Most complete protection with nothing extra to buy

OVHcloud

4.2/5

OVHcloud has sold its anti-DDoS as a core feature for over a decade, and it shows in the details. Protection is on by default across every product, with no surcharge regardless of attack volume. Detection runs constantly, mitigation starts within seconds and stays on for the whole attack. It's also the only host here that publishes a filtering capacity: several Tbps across its global network.

The first line is the Edge Network Firewall. You get up to 20 rules per IP address to drop everything except your useful ports before traffic ever reaches the box. Two catches. It handles IPv4 only. And it drops QUIC traffic at the edge no matter how you configure it, which means no HTTP/3 for a site behind it. During an attack it switches on by force, even if you left it off.

For gaming, the Game range adds a layer 7 firewall that understands the protocols of 35+ games. It's included, but you enable it IP by IP. Games without a profile, like FiveM, stay poorly covered: on OVHcloud's own community forum, an admin reports an 80 Mbps attack was enough to knock his server down, and the ticket took four days to get an answer. In the US, the RISE line is often flagged "Coming Soon", so check stock before you plan a migration.

Standout features
  • Anti-DDoS included on every range, never billed by volume
  • Only published filtering capacity in this comparison
  • Layer 7 game firewall for 35+ games on the Game range
  • Mitigation rules you can tune from the control panel
+Pros
  • ✓Mitigation in seconds, active for the full attack
  • ✓Guaranteed 1 Gbps public bandwidth on RISE
  • ✓Setup fee waived with a 12-month term
−Cons
  • ✗QUIC dropped at the edge: no HTTP/3
  • ✗20 rules per IP, IPv4 only
  • ✗US RISE stock often "Coming Soon"
  • ✗Games without a profile are poorly protected
Verdict

Our first pick if downtime costs you money or players. Take RISE for a site or API, Game only if your title is on the supported list. If your site needs HTTP/3, go Hetzner with Cloudflare in front.

2
Best price for a protected website

Hetzner

4.1/5

Hetzner protects every customer against DDoS for free and says the protection didn't push its prices up. Filtering runs on Arbor and Juniper hardware. It automatically spots attack patterns by volume, packet count, and type, and scrubs the usual suspects: DNS and NTP reflection, UDP floods, SYN floods, invalid packets. Hetzner's own wording is careful: it recognizes "almost all" patterns, and legitimate traffic is "usually" unaffected.

What's missing: no capacity figure and nothing on layer 7. On LowEndSpirit, a long-time customer sums it up: Hetzner itself calls the protection basic, fine for everyday use. Another user reports it can take up to five minutes to kick in on a game server. With Cloudflare in front of a website, you barely notice. On a UDP game server, every player gets kicked.

The Robot firewall is basic: stateless, 10 rules max per direction, IPv4 by default. Classic trap: enable it with no rules and it blocks everything, and TCP replies need an explicit ACK rule. Prices are in euros only, even on the English site: €59 a month excluding VAT for the AX41, with zero setup fee and unlimited traffic.

Standout features
  • Free DDoS protection for every customer
  • Automatic filtering of SYN and UDP floods, DNS and NTP reflection
  • No setup fee on the AX41
  • Unlimited free traffic
+Pros
  • ✓Best power-for-price ratio in this list
  • ✓No contract, cancel monthly
  • ✓Free firewall in the Robot panel
−Cons
  • ✗No published filtering capacity
  • ✗Slow activation reported for UDP games
  • ✗Stateless firewall, 10 rules per direction
  • ✗Billed in euros only
Verdict

A strong pick for a website or store, as long as Cloudflare sits in front and the server IP stays hidden. For an exposed game server, go OVHcloud.

Safest bet on support

IONOS

4.0/5

IONOS bundles "DDoS protection and advanced firewall security" with every dedicated server, according to its US product page. Its technical documentation describes a basic tier, on by default, focused on layers 3 and 4: always-on detection and automatic containment of UDP and SYN floods. For layer 7, the docs point you to a CDN. An advanced tier adds 24/7 expert support, alerts, and reports, with no public price.

No filtering capacity is published, so you can't compare IONOS with OVHcloud on raw numbers. Its edge is the people: phone, chat, and email support, which matters more than theoretical Tbps for a team without a sysadmin.

Extra IPv4 addresses cost $5 a month each, worth knowing if you plan to rotate an IP after a leak. The server price appears once you configure it, so compare it against month one at OVHcloud and Hetzner.

Standout features
  • DDoS protection and firewall on every server
  • Basic UDP and SYN flood filtering on by default
  • Phone, chat, and email support
  • Extra IPv4 at $5 a month
+Pros
  • ✓Most reachable support in this list
  • ✓Support reachable on several channels
  • ✓Docs are clear about what the protection doesn't cover
−Cons
  • ✗No published filtering capacity
  • ✗Layer 7 not covered, add a CDN
  • ✗Advanced tier has no public price
Verdict

The pick for a small business that wants someone to call. For a game server or a frequent target, OVHcloud protects better.

Cheapest, for a side project

Kimsufi (OVHcloud)

3.7/5

Kimsufi is OVHcloud's entry line and rides the same anti-DDoS network, included like on every OVHcloud product. The difference is the first line of defense: OVHcloud's docs warn the Edge Network Firewall may be unavailable or limited on Eco servers, Kimsufi included. You filter ports with your OS firewall (iptables or nftables) instead.

Field reports on LowEndTalk describe mitigation that triggers after detection, with a brief connection drop when it turns on. For a blog or a backup box, that's harmless. For a public game server, every trigger disconnects everyone.

Stock is the other limit: the cheapest models often show as unavailable. At $11.10 a month for the KS-B, it's still the cheapest way to get a whole machine behind OVHcloud's network.

Standout features
  • Same anti-DDoS network as OVHcloud, included
  • From $11.10 a month
+Pros
  • ✓Rock-bottom price for a protected dedicated box
  • ✓Good playground to learn server admin
−Cons
  • ✗Edge Network Firewall unavailable or limited
  • ✗Short drop reported when mitigation triggers
  • ✗Models often out of stock
  • ✗Minimal support
Verdict

Great for a personal project, a poor fit for a revenue site or a public game server. Step up to RISE for those.

The traps you only find during your first attack

What follows comes from our comparison and from sysadmins on hosting forums. Eight checks to run before you pay. To compare dedicated servers without the DDoS lens, see the best dedicated server; if a virtual server is enough, see the best VPS hosting.

"Included", but which layers?

Every host scrubs layers 3 and 4. None promises to stop a well-crafted HTTP request flood. If your server runs a site, add Cloudflare or at least rate limiting in Nginx (limit_req), tuned on the expensive pages: search, login, cart.

How fast does mitigation start?

OVHcloud says seconds. Hetzner users report up to five minutes on game traffic. Kimsufi users report a brief drop on trigger. On a website you'll barely notice. On a game server, one minute is enough to empty it.

Is your game supported?

OVHcloud's game firewall understands 35+ games and protocols, but you enable it per IP. If your game isn't listed (FiveM, for example), lock the Edge Network Firewall to your game port plus SSH from your own IP, and drop malformed ACK packets with iptables.

Has your IP already leaked?

The best scrubbing in the world won't help if the attacker knows your IP and hits an unprotected service. Check your domain's DNS history, your outgoing email headers, and public game server lists. If the IP leaked, change it before putting Cloudflare in front.

How many upstream firewall rules?

20 rules per IP at OVHcloud, 10 per direction at Hetzner, with no connection tracking. That's enough to open three or four ports, not for fine-grained setups. Keep the OS firewall as a second line, and always write the SSH allow rule first or you'll lock yourself out.

Does your site use HTTP/3?

OVHcloud drops QUIC at the network edge. A site serving HTTP/3 will fall back to HTTP/2 behind the Edge Network Firewall. Not a blocker for most sites, but good to know before you chase a phantom performance issue.

What does month one really cost?

At OVHcloud US, setup equals one month's rent without a commitment: $140 for a RISE-1 in month one, waived on a 12-month term. Hetzner charges no setup on the AX41: €59 excluding VAT for the first month.

Do you need a specialist filter?

Some game hosts resell stronger third-party scrubbing, usually without a readable public price and often billed on top of the server. If you face repeated attacks in the tens of Gbps, ask for a written quote with guaranteed capacity and mitigation time spelled out.

  • Protection is included and never billed by attack volume
  • Covered layers are written on the product page
  • Your game has a firewall profile, or you can filter by hand
  • Your server IP has never been published
  • Cloudflare or rate limiting protects your website
  • Month one includes the setup fee

FAQ

Your questions on DDoS-protected dedicated servers

  • What is a DDoS-protected dedicated server?

It's a whole physical server you rent, with the host filtering traffic before it reaches you. When an attack is detected, traffic is routed through scrubbing gear that drops malicious packets and passes the rest. In 2026, OVHcloud, Hetzner, IONOS, and Kimsufi include it at no extra charge.

  • Is OVHcloud DDoS protection free?

Yes, on every product, with no extra cost whatever the attack volume. The Game range's game firewall is included too, but you switch it on IP by IP in the control panel.

  • Does Hetzner protect against DDoS?

Yes, for free, with automatic filtering of common network attacks. Hetzner publishes no capacity and no layer 7 protection. Add Cloudflare in front of a site; for an exposed game server, pick OVHcloud.

  • What's the difference between network and layer 7 DDoS protection?

Network protection stops huge packet volumes (layers 3 and 4) that saturate bandwidth. Layer 7 attacks hit your application with requests that look like real users. The first is your host's job, the second is handled in front of your site with Cloudflare or rate limiting.

  • Do I need Cloudflare on top of a protected dedicated server?

For a site or API, yes. The free plan adds HTTP-level protection and hides your server IP. Then set your firewall to accept web traffic only from Cloudflare's published IP ranges, or a direct hit on the IP goes around it.

  • Which dedicated server for a Minecraft or FiveM server?

For Minecraft, OVHcloud's Game range, whose game firewall recognizes the protocol. For FiveM, which has no profile, an OVHcloud box with the Edge Network Firewall locked to port 30120 and SSH, plus iptables rules. Skip Kimsufi: the drop on trigger kicks your players.

  • What should I do during a DDoS attack?

Don't reboot or swap IPs at random: mitigation follows your address. Check in the control panel that mitigation is active, note the time and the traffic type, and open a ticket with those details. For a website, turn on Cloudflare's attack mode until it calms down.

  • How much does a DDoS-protected dedicated server cost?

From $11.10 a month at Kimsufi to $70 for an OVHcloud RISE-1, protection included. Hetzner's AX41 sits at €59 excluding VAT, billed in euros. Add OVHcloud's setup fee if you don't commit for 12 months.
