What is the best email marketing software for an online store in 2026?

The right tool wins back abandoned carts, brings customers back, and doesn't bill you for people who stopped buying.

You sell on Shopify, WooCommerce or PrestaShop and you want more than a monthly newsletter: an abandoned cart reminder, a thank-you after the first order, a nudge before a sale ends. You need email software that's wired into your store and knows what each customer bought.

The short answer. Klaviyo is the deepest option for a growing Shopify store, but it bills every active profile. Omnisend covers most of the same ground for less, from $16 a month. Shopify Email (now Shopify Messaging) is enough to start: 10,000 emails a month come with your Shopify plan. Brevo bills by emails sent, which suits a big list you mail rarely. MailPoet is the free pick for WooCommerce stores up to 500 subscribers.

What most roundups skip: these tools count three different things. Klaviyo bills active profiles, Omnisend and Mailchimp bill contacts, Brevo and Shopify bill sends. The same 10,000-customer list can cost $30 or several hundred dollars a month. We redid every number with that in mind.

The 7 ecommerce email tools compared

This ranking is for an online store selling to consumers, with a few hundred to 50,000 contacts. Every tool here connects to at least one of the three big platforms (Shopify, WooCommerce, PrestaShop) and can send an abandoned cart email. The entry price alone tells you little: check the billing model in each card.

How we scored

How we compared and scored

This page is for the store owner picking an email tool based on the store platform. It doesn't repeat our broader ecommerce email marketing ranking or our Shopify email apps guide. Here we compare three platforms, three billing models, and what consent rules let you send.

The core criterion is real cost at your list size, worth 30% of the score. We read each official pricing page, then checked what it actually counts: an active profile, a contact, or an email sent. A list full of customers who stopped opening costs almost nothing on Brevo and a lot on Klaviyo.

Store integration is worth 25%: official app or plugin, order data synced, one-way or two-way sync. Ecommerce automations are worth 20%: abandoned cart, welcome, post-purchase, win-back. The free plan and onboarding are worth 10%. Merchant feedback and support are worth 15%.

We read the bad reviews first: Shopify Community threads, Reddit, one-star app store reviews. The most common complaints are about the bill, not the features: profiles counted without notice, accounts blocked at signup, automatic tier upgrades.

Deepest for Shopify

Klaviyo

4.7/5

Klaviyo is where most Shopify brands end up. It reads everything that happens in your store: products viewed, items added to cart, orders, refunds. You can build a segment like "bought twice, nothing in 90 days, average order above $60" in a few clicks and send it its own flow.

The free plan covers 250 active profiles and 500 emails a month, with Klaviyo branding in your emails. At profile 251 nothing upgrades on its own: your sends stop until you pick a paid plan. Paid email starts at $20 a month for up to 500 active profiles.

The thing to understand before you sign is the active profile. Klaviyo counts every profile you can reach by email or SMS, whatever its consent status. A customer who unsubscribed from your newsletter but can still get order emails may count. The check runs at the end of each billing cycle: go over your tier and you're moved up automatically. To move down, you have to request it more than 24 hours before the next cycle. Profiles you delete leave the count within 72 hours.

Its weak spot is the surprise bill. Merchants describe a list jumping from about 16,000 to 65,000 profiles overnight because bots were filling in the signup form. Others complain about paying for dormant profiles. Human support is for paid plans only. And a tip that keeps coming up in Shopify Community: predictive segments (like expected next order date) only become useful at around 500 customers with orders and 180 days of history.

Tip: turn on double opt-in or a captcha on your signup form from day one. Then each month, delete profiles with no opens in six months, more than 24 hours before your cycle ends.

Standout features
  • Segments built on purchase behavior
  • Flows triggered by every Shopify event
  • Free up to 250 active profiles
+Pros
  • ✓The richest store data of the group
  • ✓Ready-made ecommerce flow library
  • ✓Very well rated by Shopify merchants
−Cons
  • ✗Billed per active profile
  • ✗Automatic tier upgrades
  • ✗Human support on paid plans only
Verdict

The best tool for a Shopify store that wants to push segmentation far. Keep an eye on your profile count, or the bill will grow faster than your sales. If you ever want out, read our switching from Klaviyo guide.

Best value

Omnisend

4.5/5

Omnisend goes after the same merchant as Klaviyo, with gentler pricing. The ecommerce flows come ready to use: welcome, abandoned cart, product viewed, post-purchase. The company focuses on online stores and doesn't try to serve everyone.

Pricing is easy to read. The free plan gives you 250 contacts and 500 emails a month. Standard is $16 a month for 500 contacts and 6,000 emails. Pro is $59 a month for 2,500 contacts with unlimited emails under fair use. Prepay three months and you get 30% off: $11.20 instead of $16, $41.30 instead of $59. The team also offers to migrate your account from another tool, in about five days.

SMS changed in 2026: for new paid accounts, it's only on Pro, and messages are bought separately, from $0.007 per text at high US volumes.

Its weak spot is account checks. One-star reviews describe accounts blocked at signup with no clear reason, deliverability falling apart after a big list import or a DNS change (your domain settings), and cancellation routed through a retention chat. On a dropshipping subreddit, though, two users call it very cost-effective, and one agency sums it up: the setup matters more than the app.

Tip: don't import your whole list on day one. Mail your recent customers first, then widen in batches. You protect deliverability and avoid an automatic block.

Standout features
  • Pro at $59 for 2,500 contacts, unlimited emails
  • 30% off when you prepay 3 months
  • Migration handled by the vendor
+Pros
  • ✓Cheaper than Klaviyo for the same list
  • ✓Ready-made ecommerce flows
  • ✓Email and SMS from one vendor
−Cons
  • ✗SMS only on Pro for new accounts
  • ✗Strict account checks at signup
  • ✗Retention chat to cancel
Verdict

The sensible pick for a store with 500 to 10,000 contacts that wants most of Klaviyo for much less. Get your first import right: that's where it's won or lost.

Easiest start

Shopify Messaging

4.3/5

Shopify Messaging (formerly Shopify Email) is already in your Shopify admin. Nothing to install, nothing to sync: your products, customers and orders are already there. You can send a campaign featuring your products in three clicks and turn on abandoned cart reminders from a template.

On price, it's hard to beat at the start. Basic, Grow, Advanced and Plus include 10,000 emails a month. Beyond that you pay $1 per 1,000 emails on your Shopify bill. Abandoned cart emails are free and don't touch your quota. A store with 2,000 customers sending four campaigns a month pays nothing extra.

Its limit is depth. Segmentation is simpler than in Klaviyo or Omnisend, there are fewer flows, and it only works on Shopify. The day you want a flow per product category with three branches, you'll move on.

Still, it's the advice merchants who overspent early give most often: get your welcome, abandoned cart and post-purchase emails right with the free tool, then pay for an expensive one once your list justifies it.

Tip: start collecting birthdays and preferences in Shopify's native customer fields now. That data follows you the day you move to Klaviyo or Omnisend.

Standout features
  • 10,000 emails a month included
  • Free abandoned cart emails outside the quota
  • Nothing to install
+Pros
  • ✓No extra subscription
  • ✓Store data already in place
  • ✓Instant setup
−Cons
  • ✗Basic segmentation
  • ✗Fewer flows than specialist tools
  • ✗Shopify only
Verdict

The best starting point for a Shopify store under a few thousand customers. Stay as long as your flows fit in three templates.

Best for big, quiet lists

Brevo

4.1/5

Brevo (formerly Sendinblue) bills sends, not contacts. That's its big difference. The free plan stores up to 100,000 contacts and sends 300 emails a day. If your list is large but you only mail it once a month, it's by far the cheapest option here.

Paid plans start at $9 a month (Starter) and $18 a month (Standard), each for 5,000 emails. Since 2025, Starter at $9 only stores 500 contacts, so check your volume before you pick. Paying yearly takes 10% off.

On the store side, Brevo has an official PrestaShop module that pushes your customers and orders into Brevo. The sync runs one way, from PrestaShop to Brevo: an unsubscribe in Brevo doesn't flow back to your store. On Shopify, the Brevo app is no longer listed in the App Store. Don't pick Brevo for a Shopify store.

Its weak spot is suspension. Merchants describe accounts suspended right after the first campaign, sent to an old or purchased list. In Shopify Community, one merchant recommends Brevo for budget email plus SMS, with a warning: warm up your sending domain first. Our full Brevo review covers each plan.

Tip: before your first campaign, remove addresses with no opens in a year and start with your 500 best customers.

Standout features
  • Billed by sends, near-unlimited contacts
  • Official PrestaShop module
  • Email and SMS in one tool
+Pros
  • ✓Cheapest for a big list you mail rarely
  • ✓Generous free contact storage
  • ✓Simple interface
−Cons
  • ✗One-way PrestaShop sync
  • ✗No longer in the Shopify App Store
  • ✗Suspensions on poorly kept lists
Verdict

The right call for a PrestaShop store or a large list you don't mail often. On Shopify, look elsewhere.

Best for WooCommerce

MailPoet

4.0/5

MailPoet is a WordPress plugin built for WooCommerce. You manage your emails from your site's admin, next to your products and orders. No connector to set up, no data shuttling between two tools.

The Starter plan is free up to 500 subscribers and 5,000 emails a month. That's enough for a small store sending one campaign a week. Beyond that you move to the Business or Agency plans.

Automations cover the ecommerce basics: abandoned cart, first purchase, purchase of a specific product or category. MailPoet also lets you restyle WooCommerce's transactional emails (order confirmation, shipping) with the same editor as your campaigns, so your order emails finally look like your brand.

Its limit: it only works with WordPress and WooCommerce, and it doesn't do SMS. Segmentation stays simpler than Klaviyo's. If your store grows fast, you'll hit its ceiling before Omnisend's.

Tip: if you restyle your order confirmation, don't drop a promo block into it. Under EU rules, a transactional email that pushes an offer becomes marketing, with the consent rules that come with it.

Standout features
  • Free up to 500 subscribers
  • Branded WooCommerce order emails
  • Everything in the WordPress admin
+Pros
  • ✓No outside connector
  • ✓Abandoned cart and first purchase included
  • ✓Order emails in your brand style
−Cons
  • ✗WordPress and WooCommerce only
  • ✗No SMS
  • ✗Limited segmentation
Verdict

The natural starting point for a WooCommerce store. Once your list passes a few thousand subscribers and you want SMS, look at Omnisend or Brevo.

Best known

Mailchimp

3.9/5

Mailchimp is the best-known email tool, and plenty of stores started their newsletter there. The editor is pleasant, templates are plentiful, and it connects to most commerce platforms.

The catch is the pricing ladder. The free plan gives 250 contacts and 500 emails a month. Essentials starts at $13 a month, but its flows are capped at four steps. Worse, abandoned cart is reserved for Standard, which starts at $20 for 500 contacts and rises with your list. Premium is $350 a month.

Mailchimp does give solid advice on abandoned carts: a first email about an hour after the abandon, in a series of three. You can apply it in any tool on this list.

Its limit: for a store, you pay generalist-tool money at specialist-tool prices. For the same list, Omnisend gives you more ecommerce flows for a similar price. If you're leaving, our switching from Mailchimp guide walks through the options.

Tip: before upgrading to Standard just for abandoned cart, check whether your platform does it for free. On Shopify, Shopify Messaging's cart reminders cost nothing.

Standout features
  • Very pleasant email editor
  • Lots of integrations
  • Clear abandoned cart guidance
+Pros
  • ✓Quick to learn
  • ✓Plenty of templates
  • ✓Every freelancer knows it
−Cons
  • ✗Abandoned cart from Standard only
  • ✗Flows capped at 4 steps on Essentials
  • ✗Price climbs with contacts
Verdict

Keep it if you're already there and your list stays small. For a new store, Omnisend or Shopify Messaging do more for the same money.

Most detailed flows

Drip

3.8/5

Drip is built for direct-to-consumer brands. Its flow builder is one of the clearest around: every branch, delay and condition on one screen. Sends are unlimited however often you mail.

There's no free plan, just a 14-day trial. Price follows your contact count: $39 a month up to 2,500, $154 at 10,000, $699 at 50,000. On a small list it's the priciest tool here. At high send volumes, unlimited emails make up for it.

Its limit is the slope. Between 10,000 and 50,000 contacts, the bill more than quadruples. And it has fewer recent reviews than Klaviyo or Omnisend. Our full Drip review details each tier.

Tip: use the 14-day trial to rebuild your abandoned cart and post-purchase flows. If you haven't used conditional branches after two weeks, Drip isn't for you.

Standout features
  • Unlimited sends on every plan
  • Very readable flow builder
  • Built for DTC brands
+Pros
  • ✓No email quota
  • ✓Clear branched flows
  • ✓Full 14-day trial
−Cons
  • ✗No free plan
  • ✗$39 from day one
  • ✗Steep pricing past 10,000 contacts
Verdict

For the brand that mails a lot and wants fine-grained flows. A small store will overpay for features it won't use.

Real cost

What your email marketing really costs each month

Active profile, contact or send: here's what each billing model means for a store sending four campaigns a month plus its automated emails. Official prices, before tax.

At 500 contacts

MailPoet is free on WooCommerce. Shopify Messaging costs nothing: 2,000 emails, well under the 10,000 included. Brevo starts at $9. Omnisend is $16, or $11.20 if you prepay three months. Klaviyo and Mailchimp Standard start at $20. Drip asks $39. The spread already runs from $0 to $39.

At 10,000 contacts

Four campaigns mean 40,000 emails. On Shopify Messaging, 10,000 are included and the next 30,000 cost $30. Drip bills $154 a month with unlimited sends. On Klaviyo, everything hinges on active profiles: get your quote from the official calculator after you've cleaned out dormant profiles.

At 50,000 contacts

Four campaigns mean 200,000 emails: $190 a month in overage on Shopify Messaging. Drip goes to $699. On Brevo, billed by sends, a 50,000-address list costs no more than a 10,000 one if you send the same number of emails. This is the size where the billing model matters most.

  • Does the tool bill by active profile, contact or send?
  • Do unsubscribed contacts count toward your bill?
  • Does your tier go up on its own, and how do you go back down?
  • Is abandoned cart included in your plan?
  • Is SMS available in the countries you sell to, and at what price per text?
  • Does the store sync run both ways?
By platform

Shopify, WooCommerce or PrestaShop: what actually works

The best tool depends on your platform first. Here's what each one implies and which tool fits it best.

01

On Shopify: start free, upgrade as your list grows

Platform

Shopify Messaging covers the early days with no extra subscription. When you want purchase-based segments, Klaviyo and Omnisend are the two serious options. Brevo is no longer in the Shopify App Store, so rule it out. To compare every Shopify app, see our Shopify email marketing guide.

02

On WooCommerce: keep it inside WordPress

Platform

MailPoet lives in your WordPress admin and also restyles your order emails. It's free up to 500 subscribers. Beyond that, or if you want SMS, an outside tool like Brevo or Omnisend takes over: check that its plugin syncs orders, not just email addresses.

03

On PrestaShop: check which way the sync runs

Platform

Brevo has an official PrestaShop module, but sync only runs one way. A customer who unsubscribes in Brevo stays subscribed in PrestaShop, so keep your unsubscribe list in the email tool, never in the store. Positive User (formerly Sarbacane) also offers a module that syncs product views, cart adds and purchases.

SMS and consent

What you can legally send, and to whom

The best software won't protect you from a complaint. These are the rules that change what you send.

01

US texts: get explicit opt-in before the first SMS

Rule

In the US, marketing texts fall under the TCPA: you need the customer's prior express written consent before the first promotional text, and buying from you can't be made conditional on giving it. An email signup doesn't count as SMS consent, so add a dedicated SMS checkbox with clear wording.

SMS
Separate opt-in
02

Selling to Europe: prospects must say yes first

Rule

If you sell to customers in France or elsewhere in the EU, marketing email to a consumer who never bought from you needs prior consent: an unchecked box on your form. A purchased list doesn't meet that bar, and it's also the top reason vendors suspend accounts.

Prospect
Prior consent required
03

Existing customers: similar products only

Exception

In France, a past customer can get your offers without a checked box if their address was collected during a sale, you offer similar products from your own business, and they can opt out easily at collection and in every message.

Customer
Similar products, easy opt-out
04

A promo inside an order email turns it into marketing

Trap

An order confirmation or shipping notice needs no consent. Add a "10% off your next order" block and it becomes marketing. Keep your order emails purely informational, and put offers in your campaigns.

Avoid
Promo block in a receipt

Tips

Pay less for email without sending less

Settings pulled from merchant forums that change the bill whatever tool you use.

01

Purge dormant profiles before the cycle ends

Price

Klaviyo checks your active profile count at the end of each cycle. Delete profiles with no opens in six months more than 24 hours before: they leave the count within 72 hours. On Omnisend and Mailchimp, billed by contacts, the same cleanup lowers your tier.

Timing
24+ hours before the cycle
02

Authenticate and warm up your domain before migrating

Deliverability

SPF, DKIM and DMARC are three domain settings that prove your emails really come from you. Set them up before you migrate, then mail your most active customers first for a week or two. That's the fix for the suspensions merchants report on Brevo and Omnisend.

Set up
SPF, DKIM, DMARC
03

Send the first cart reminder after about an hour

Sales

A three-email series, the first around an hour after the abandon, is still the baseline. On Shopify, these reminders are free and outside your quota with Shopify Messaging: keep them there even if you run campaigns from another tool.

Cadence
3 emails, first at 1 hour
04

Protect your signup form from bots

Security

An open signup form can fill up with fake addresses overnight. On a tool billed per profile, every bot costs you. Turn on double opt-in or a captcha and check your contact count weekly during the first month.

Protection
Double opt-in
05

Store customer data in your store, not the email tool

Migration

Birthday, preferences, size: save them in your platform's customer fields. The day you switch email tools, they come along without an export. Data that only lives in the email tool often gets lost on the way.

Benefit
Lossless migration

Omnisend takes 30% off if you prepay three months: Standard drops from $16 to $11.20, Pro from $59 to $41.30. Brevo gives 10% off yearly. Commit only after a full first month on the tool.

FAQ

Your questions about ecommerce email

  • Klaviyo or Omnisend: which one should I pick?

Klaviyo if you're on Shopify and want the deepest purchase-based segments. Omnisend if you want ready-made ecommerce flows and SMS for less: Standard is $16 a month for 500 contacts, Pro $59 for 2,500 with unlimited emails.

  • What's the cheapest email tool for a small store?

Shopify Messaging on Shopify (10,000 emails a month included) and MailPoet on WooCommerce (free up to 500 subscribers). Brevo's free plan sends 300 emails a day and stores up to 100,000 contacts.

  • When is Klaviyo worth the money?

When you have enough history to use what you're paying for. Its predictive segments only become useful at around 500 customers with orders and 180 days of data. Before that, a cheaper tool runs the same welcome and cart flows.

  • Why does my Klaviyo bill go up when my customer count does not?

Because Klaviyo counts active profiles, including newsletter unsubscribers who are still reachable. Bots can also flood your signup form. Check new profiles, protect the form, and delete dormant ones more than 24 hours before your cycle ends.

  • How much does SMS add to an ecommerce email tool?

It depends on the destination. Omnisend sells texts separately from $0.007 each at high US volumes, and only on Pro for new accounts. Klaviyo bills mobile messages per unit. An emoji cuts an SMS to 70 characters, so a long message can count as two.

  • Does deliverability depend on the email tool?

Less than on your list quality. Most problems merchants report come from one huge import, an unauthenticated domain or an old list. Set up SPF, DKIM and DMARC, then ramp up volume gradually.

  • What email tool works best with PrestaShop?

Brevo, thanks to its official module. Just remember the sync runs from PrestaShop to Brevo, not back: manage unsubscribes in Brevo. Positive User also has a PrestaShop module with abandoned cart emails.
