What is the best marketing automation software in 2026?

Real marketing automation doesn't just send your newsletter. It watches what prospects do, scores them, and tells sales when to call.

You already send a newsletter. Prospects grab your ebook, check your pricing page twice, then go quiet. Your sales rep has no idea who to call. Marketing automation fixes that with workflows that fire on behavior, lead scoring that ranks interest, and a clean handoff to sales.

The short answer. HubSpot Marketing Hub is the most complete pick for a B2B team that wants marketing and CRM in one place, if you can stomach $800 a month plus a $3,000 onboarding fee on Professional. ActiveCampaign gives you the most flexible workflows for the money: about $100 a month with lead scoring. Brevo is the cheapest way in, but scoring only shows up at $499. Customer.io is built for SaaS teams that trigger messages from product events. GetResponse is the budget route to scoring at $59. Salesforce Account Engagement only makes sense if your reps already live in Salesforce.

What most roundups skip: the sticker price never tells you which plan unlocks the two features you're paying for, branching workflows and lead scoring. We dug that out plan by plan and priced year one with the mandatory fees.

6 marketing automation platforms compared

This ranking is for a small or mid-sized business, often B2B, that already has a contact list and wants workflows, lead scoring and a handoff to sales. Every ranked tool shows public pricing on its official page. Marketo and Klaviyo's paid tiers, which we couldn't price from an official page, sit further down, unranked.

How we scored

How we compared and rated

This page is for the marketing lead or founder who has outgrown a plain newsletter. If all you need is to send campaigns, our email marketing software ranking will save you time. Here, we judge what separates the two worlds: workflows that react to behavior, and scoring that tells sales who to call.

Hence the weighting. Workflows are 25% and scoring 25%, because those are the two things you pay a marketing automation platform for. A tool that hides them behind its top plan loses points here, not just on price. Real cost is 20%, priced over year one on the plan that unlocks scoring, onboarding included. Data and compliance is 15%, and ease of use and support is 15%.

Then we read user reviews, harshest first. With HubSpot, complaints target auto-renewals and marketing contact tiers that climb on their own. With ActiveCampaign, it's price increases year over year. With Brevo, it's accounts frozen during validation after a couple of test sends. Each card below names the pain point and how to dodge it.

Most complete for B2B

HubSpot Marketing Hub

4.2/5

HubSpot is the name everyone mentions first, and it earns it: marketing, CRM and sales tracking share one contact record. When a prospect fills a form, hits your pricing page three times and opens your last campaign, the rep sees it without switching tools. Nothing else in this ranking does that as naturally.

The catch fits in one line: branching workflows and lead scoring live on Professional. Starter lists at $20 per seat per month, often discounted to $7, and covers campaigns and forms. Professional runs $800 a month billed yearly for 3 seats and 2,000 marketing contacts, plus a mandatory $3,000 onboarding fee. Year one lands around $12,600 before you add a single contact tier.

The pain points in user reviews are consistent: 12-month contracts that renew on their own, seats you can't reduce mid-term, and marketing contact tiers that creep up. Reviewers still call the product powerful, and Pipedrive comes up as the cheaper escape for sales-only teams.

Tip: only contacts flagged as marketing contacts count toward your tier. Set customers and old leads you never email to non-marketing. And put the renewal date in your calendar three months ahead.

Standout features
  • Marketing and CRM on one record
  • Scoring and branching on Pro
  • Free CRM to start
+Pros
  • ✓Full prospect view for sales
  • ✓Starter is cheap to try
  • ✓EU data hosting available
−Cons
  • ✗Steep jump from Starter to Pro
  • ✗$3,000 required onboarding
  • ✗Auto-renewals draw complaints
Verdict

The best pick when marketing has to feed a sales team and Professional fits the budget. For a fancier newsletter, it's overkill.

2
Most flexible workflows for the money

ActiveCampaign

4.2/5

ActiveCampaign built its name on the workflow builder. You set a trigger (signup, tag, page visit, purchase), then chain conditions, waits, split tests and field updates. From Plus up, there's no cap on actions per automation, versus 5 on Starter.

Pricing at 1,000 contacts, billed yearly: Starter $15, Plus $49, Pro $79, Enterprise $145. A contact slider pushes the price up from there.

Lead scoring isn't in the base price. It comes with the CRM Pipelines add-on, which also adds deals, from $39 a month on Plus. Add a second seat at $12 and a scoring-ready Plus lands near $100 a month. That's the cheapest real lead scoring in this ranking by a wide margin.

The downside: per-contact billing bites as your list grows, and several customers describe bills that multiplied over two years. Support gets mixed marks, the builder takes real time to learn, and a few users report automations that stop without a clear alert.

Tip: before paying for the CRM add-on, check whether sales already has a CRM. ActiveCampaign connects to Pipedrive and Salesforce, so scoring can live there while workflows stay here.

Standout features
  • Unlimited actions from Plus
  • Lead scoring for about $100 a month
  • Strong deliverability per reviews
+Pros
  • ✓One of the finest workflow builders
  • ✓Integrations praised by users
  • ✓Clear slider pricing
−Cons
  • ✗Scoring is a paid add-on
  • ✗Bill grows with your list
  • ✗Learning curve
Verdict

The best power-to-price ratio in marketing automation. Project your contact count two years out before you commit, because that's what sets your bill.

Cheapest way in

Brevo

4.1/5

Brevo, formerly Sendinblue, is the cheapest entry point into marketing automation. The free plan already opens automations for up to 2,000 contacts. Standard, at $18 a month for 5,000 emails, lifts that cap, though the first tier only holds 500 contacts and the price climbs with sending volume. SMS slots into the same workflows and a free sales CRM comes along; WhatsApp waits for Pro.

The gap is scoring. Brevo only scores contacts on Pro, at $499 a month, with nothing in between. For a B2B team that wants sales alerted when a prospect heats up, that's a jump from $18 to $499.

Workaround on Standard: create a numeric contact attribute and add points inside your workflows (+10 for an ebook download, +20 for a pricing page visit). It isn't true scoring, but it gives you a weekly list of your most engaged contacts.

Limits: the builder is stiffer than ActiveCampaign on complex branches, and users report accounts frozen at validation after two test emails, or add-ons switched on in one click with no confirmation. Phone support costs extra.

Tip: authenticate your sending domain (SPF and DKIM, the DNS records that prove you're the sender) before your first send. It prevents most early account freezes.

Standout features
  • Automations on the free plan
  • Email, SMS and WhatsApp in one workflow
  • Free sales CRM
+Pros
  • ✓Lowest entry price
  • ✓Simple interface
  • ✓Generous contact storage
−Cons
  • ✗Scoring only on Pro at $499
  • ✗Less flexible on complex branches
  • ✗Early account freezes reported
Verdict

A solid first tool if your workflows are simple. The day scoring becomes a must, compare Brevo Pro with ActiveCampaign before paying $499.

Best for SaaS product teams

Customer.io

3.9/5

Customer.io starts where most tools stop: inside your product. Workflows fire on events your app sends (signed up, invited a teammate, hit a usage limit, went quiet for a week), not just on email clicks. For SaaS onboarding and churn prevention, that's the difference between generic drips and messages that land at the right moment.

Essentials costs $100 a month for 5,000 profiles and up to 1 million emails a month. It's $145 at 10,000 profiles and $235 at 20,000. Premium starts at $1,000 a month on an annual contract. Startups that raised less than $10 million can apply for a free year.

The downside: lead scoring and sales handoff are not its strength, and there's no free tier. You also need clean event data flowing from your product, which means a developer has to wire it up before marketing can do anything.

Tip: start by sending five events only (signup, activation, key feature used, invite, inactivity). Most teams over-instrument on day one and drown in data they never use.

Standout features
  • Product-event triggers
  • 1 million emails on Essentials
  • Free year for early startups
+Pros
  • ✓Built for SaaS lifecycle messaging
  • ✓Transparent profile-based pricing
  • ✓Listed prices up to 20,000 profiles
−Cons
  • ✗Needs developer setup
  • ✗Weak on B2B lead scoring
  • ✗No free plan
Verdict

The pick for product-led SaaS. For a services firm with a sales team, HubSpot or ActiveCampaign fit better.

Budget lead scoring

GetResponse

3.8/5

GetResponse is the quiet budget option for scoring. On the Marketer plan, $59 a month at 1,000 contacts ($48.38 billed yearly), you get unlimited automation workflows and lead scoring. That's well under Brevo Pro and below a kitted-out ActiveCampaign Plus at about $100.

The trap is the entry plan. Starter, at $19 a month, allows exactly one automation workflow and no scoring. Plenty of buyers pick it on price and hit the wall within weeks. Creator, at $69, sits above it.

Limits: the workflow builder is less granular than ActiveCampaign's, and the tool is aimed at small teams rather than heavy B2B sales handoff. CRM features stay light.

Tip: use the 14-day trial to rebuild your two most important workflows on Marketer. If they fit, the annual price saves you about 18%.

Standout features
  • Scoring at $59
  • Unlimited workflows on Marketer
  • 14-day trial
+Pros
  • ✓Cheap route to scoring
  • ✓About 18% off when billed yearly
  • ✓Clear tiers
−Cons
  • ✗Starter allows one workflow
  • ✗Light CRM
  • ✗Less granular builder
Verdict

A smart budget pick if you go straight to Marketer. Skip Starter, it's an email tool with one workflow.

If you already run Salesforce

Salesforce Account Engagement

3.7/5

Account Engagement, formerly Pardot, is Salesforce's B2B marketing automation. Its case is integration: a prospect's score, visits and form fills land on the rep's Salesforce record with no connector to babysit.

Price rules out most small businesses. Growth+ costs $1,250 a month for 10,000 contacts and includes 50 forms or landing pages, 50 automation rules, nurturing and scoring. Plus+ at $2,750 adds AI scoring. Advanced+ at $4,400 adds a dedicated IP. The annual contract is mandatory even though prices show per month, so Growth+ commits you to $15,000 a year.

Limits: without Salesforce it loses most of its point. The 50-form cap on Growth+ fills fast if you run lots of events and content. SMS and WhatsApp are add-ons except on Premium+.

Tip: if you're torn between Growth+ and Plus+, count your forms first. Unlimited forms often justify the step up more than AI scoring does.

Standout features
  • Scoring visible in Salesforce
  • Nurturing and scoring on Growth+
  • AI scoring on Plus+
+Pros
  • ✓Native Salesforce integration
  • ✓Built for long sales cycles
  • ✓Clear published tiers
−Cons
  • ✗Annual contract required
  • ✗$1,250 a month minimum
  • ✗Little value outside Salesforce
Verdict

The logical choice if sales runs on Salesforce. Otherwise HubSpot does the same job for less.

Real cost

What marketing automation really costs in year one

Sticker prices compare different things: a seat, a contact tier, a profile count. Here's year one on the plan that actually unlocks scoring, at official prices before tax.

Lead scoring on a budget

GetResponse Marketer billed yearly: about $581 for 1,000 contacts. ActiveCampaign Plus with the CRM add-on and a second seat: about $1,200. Brevo Pro billed yearly: $5,389. At this level, Brevo costs nine times GetResponse for scoring.

A B2B team at scale

HubSpot Professional: about $12,600 in year one for just 2,000 marketing contacts, onboarding included; every extra contact tier adds to that. Salesforce Account Engagement Growth+: $15,000 for 10,000 contacts, annual contract. Customer.io Essentials at 10,000 profiles: $1,740, but without B2B scoring.

The fees people forget

Required onboarding at HubSpot ($3,000 on Professional, $7,000 on Enterprise). ActiveCampaign's CRM add-on ($39 a month). Extra seats for sales reps. Setup help, usually quoted separately. And your team's time: plan on several weeks before your first workflows run cleanly.

  • Which plan unlocks lead scoring?
  • How many active workflows does your plan allow?
  • Are you billed per contact, per seat or per profile?
  • Is there a mandatory onboarding fee?
  • Is the contract annual, and does it auto-renew?
  • Where is your prospect data stored?

Other platforms worth knowing

These come up in every search. They're unranked because they target a different buyer, or because we couldn't read official pricing. Here's when they're worth a look.

01

Klaviyo: the Shopify standard

Ecommerce

Klaviyo is the go-to for abandoned cart and post-purchase flows. The free plan covers 250 active profiles and 500 emails a month; paid tiers sit behind a slider. Watch the active-profile billing: merchants report bots and fake carts pushing their base from 16,000 to 65,000 profiles. Suppress inactive profiles and put a captcha on your forms.

02

Marketo Engage: enterprise, by quote

Enterprise

Adobe's Marketo Engage runs large B2B programs and publishes no pricing: every deal is quoted. If you have a dedicated marketing ops team, it belongs on your shortlist. Otherwise HubSpot Professional covers the same ground with public prices.

03

Mailchimp: email first, automation second

Email

Mailchimp is an email tool that added journeys. On Essentials, a customer journey is capped at 4 steps; Standard raises that to 200. If you need real branching, you need at least Standard, and at that point ActiveCampaign Plus is worth comparing.

04

Mautic: free if you have a developer

Open source

Mautic is open source and free to self-host, with no per-contact billing. The real cost is a server, updates, deliverability monitoring and someone who can maintain it. Without in-house technical skills, a hosted tool ends up cheaper.

European options: Webmecanik and Positive User

Data

If EU data residency matters, two European vendors publish prices. Webmecanik, built on Mautic, includes scoring and unlimited users from €450 a month for 10,000 contacts. Positive User (formerly Sarbacane) says it is built and hosted in Europe, holds ISO 27001, and sells its Marketing Automation Suite at €199 a month billed yearly with unlimited contacts.

Workflows

4 workflows that actually pay off

A marketing automation platform is only as good as the workflows you put in it. Build these first, in this order, whichever tool you pick.

01

A 3-email welcome

First

Someone signs up: they get what they asked for right away, then two emails on day 2 and day 5 that show your offer and a customer story. Add one branch: if they click the pricing page, move them into a sales-ready workflow. All six ranked tools handle this, even Brevo on the free plan.

Timing
Day 0, 2, 5
02

Scoring that pings sales

B2B

Give points for buying signals: +20 for the pricing page, +15 for a watched demo, +5 per open. Subtract points for personal email addresses if you sell to companies. Past a threshold, say 50, the tool creates a task for the rep. Start with five rules and tune after a quarter of data.

Starting threshold
50 points, then tune
03

Nurture leads who aren't ready

Long cycle

Someone who downloads a guide isn't ready to buy. Send one useful piece every two weeks for three months, then offer a call. Stop the workflow the moment they reply or sign: nothing annoys a new customer more than an intro email after the contract.

Cadence
Every 2 weeks
04

Re-engage before you clean

Cost

Contacts with no opens in 90 days get a last "still interested?" email. Those who don't click leave your active list. On per-contact tools (HubSpot, ActiveCampaign, Klaviyo), that cleanup lowers the bill and helps deliverability.

Threshold
90 days, no opens
Traps

What derails a marketing automation rollout

These mistakes keep showing up in user reviews. None of them is visible on a pricing page.

01

Buying the plan without scoring

Price

HubSpot Starter, Brevo Standard, ActiveCampaign without the CRM add-on, GetResponse Starter: none of them score leads. You find the price jump three months in, when sales asks who to call. Check the scoring plan before you sign.

Check
Which plan scores
02

Missing the renewal

Contract

Twelve-month contracts that renew themselves and seats you can't reduce mid-term are the top complaint about HubSpot, and Salesforce requires an annual contract. Set a reminder three months out and get cancellation terms in writing at signing.

Annual required
Account Engagement
03

Paying for dead contacts

Price

Importing your whole history into a per-contact tool means paying every month for addresses that never read. Import only contacts active in the last 12 months, and run the re-engagement workflow above before every renewal.

Per contact
HubSpot, ActiveCampaign
04

Launching without sales

Process

A score nobody looks at is worthless. Before configuring anything, agree with sales on what a ready lead is: company size, role, behavior on the site. Then decide who calls back, and how fast.

FAQ

Your questions about marketing automation software

  • What's the difference between email marketing and marketing automation?

Email marketing sends a campaign to a list; marketing automation fires messages based on each contact's behavior and scores their interest. Quick test: if the tool can't do "if they visited pricing, alert the rep", it's an email tool.

  • How much does marketing automation software cost?

With lead scoring, expect about $50 a month (GetResponse Marketer) to $800 (HubSpot Professional, billed yearly) and $1,250 (Account Engagement Growth+). Without scoring, Brevo starts at $18. Add onboarding: $3,000 on HubSpot Professional.

  • What is the best marketing automation software for small business?

For most small businesses, ActiveCampaign Plus with the CRM add-on, at about $100 a month, gives the best mix of workflows and scoring. On a tighter budget, GetResponse Marketer does scoring at $59. HubSpot only makes sense once you can afford Professional.

  • Is HubSpot worth it for a small business?

Only if marketing feeds a sales team and Professional fits the budget. Year one runs about $12,600 with onboarding. Starter at $20 a seat is a fine CRM and email tool, but it doesn't score leads or branch workflows.

  • Is there free marketing automation software?

Yes, with limits. Brevo opens automations for up to 2,000 contacts for free, and Mautic is free if you host it yourself. No free plan includes real lead scoring.

  • Which tool is best for B2B lead scoring?

HubSpot Professional if you want scoring and CRM together, Account Engagement if you're on Salesforce, ActiveCampaign with the CRM add-on on a budget. Whatever you pick, agree on a lead definition with sales first.

  • Can Zapier replace a marketing automation platform?

No, it complements one. Zapier or Make connect your apps, but they don't send bulk email, track site visits or score leads. Use them to push leads from forms or ads into your marketing automation tool.

  • How long does it take to set up marketing automation?

A few days for a first welcome workflow, several weeks for scoring that holds up. The slow part isn't the software: it's agreeing with sales on what counts as a ready lead.
