What's the best MDM for a small business in 2026?

Check what you already pay for before you buy device management. Plenty of small businesses own an MDM without knowing it.

Someone leaves and keeps the company iPhone. A sales rep loses a laptop at the airport. The office manager burns a morning setting up Wi-Fi on ten phones. Mobile device management (MDM) handles all three: remote lock and wipe, apps and settings pushed over the air, passcodes enforced.

The short answer: on Microsoft 365 Business Premium, Intune is already included. Under 25 devices, ManageEngine is free with every feature, and Miradore is free up to 50. Past that, Hexnode or Scalefusion run $2 to $6 per device per month. All Apple? Mosyle is free up to 30 devices, and Jamf Now starts at $4.

The 8 best MDM tools for small business, side by side

Two columns do the sorting for a small business: the free tier and the purchase minimum. A tool that wants 25 or 30 licenses makes no sense for 12 phones. Then check the unit: Intune and JumpCloud bill per person, everyone else per device.

How we ranked

How we picked for a small business

Most of the top US results for this search are written by vendors who rank themselves first, and several quote prices the vendors no longer publish. None of them start with the question that saves a small business the most money: do you already own an MDM through Microsoft 365, Google Workspace or Apple?

We compared each vendor's pricing page, its purchase minimum and the cap on its free tier, then read r/sysadmin threads where admins at 20 to 50 person companies explain what they picked. Category scores match our main MDM ranking, so a tool carries the same score on every page.

Rank reflects what matters to a team without an IT department: the platforms covered, a price you can read without a sales call, and a rollout that doesn't take weeks.

Best if you already pay for Business Premium

Microsoft Intune

4.4/5

Here's the question most small business MDM roundups skip: are you already paying for one? Open the Microsoft 365 admin center and check your licenses. If Business Premium is listed, Intune came with it. In an r/sysadmin thread from an admin running about 50 people, that was the most common answer by a wide margin.

Bought on its own, Intune Plan 1 is $8 per user per month on an annual commitment. One license covers every device that person uses, so 30 employees cost $2,880 a year whether they carry one device or three. Microsoft also sells a device-only license for kiosks and shared devices, but it drops app protection policies and Conditional Access.

The catch for a business with no IT person: the console is big. One admin put it bluntly, Intune is hard to set up for so few devices. Policies can also lag. The background check-in runs roughly every eight hours, while push notifications usually trigger a sync within minutes, and a manual sync from Company Portal forces it.

Standout features
  • Often already in your Microsoft subscription
  • Priced per person, all their devices included
  • App protection on personal phones without full enrollment
+Pros
  • ✓Windows Autopilot ships a new laptop straight to the employee
  • ✓Conditional Access tied to Microsoft accounts
  • ✓Cheaper than per-device tools past 2.5 devices per employee
−Cons
  • ✗Steep console if you've never run Microsoft admin
  • ✗Policies can be slow to land
  • ✗Device-only license loses app protection
Verdict

If Business Premium is in your license list, try Intune before you buy anything else. Without Microsoft 365, it loses its biggest edge.

2
Best per-device MDM from 15 devices

Hexnode UEM

4.3/5

Hexnode puts its floor right on the pricing page: start with 15 devices. Below that, look elsewhere. Above it, it's one of the MDMs small teams find easiest. One reviewer who tried more than 20 called it the simplest of the lot.

For most small businesses, the right tier is Enterprise at $3.20, the one Hexnode labels Most Popular. It adds basic desktop management that Pro lacks. Fifty devices on Enterprise come to $1,920 a year. Scripts, Autopilot and FileVault sit in Ultimate, and OS patching for macOS and Windows only in Ultra, which is quote-only. That's the complaint that keeps coming up: the good features live in the top plan.

Count your admins too. Pro includes two technicians, Enterprise three. If an outside IT provider shares the console with you, that's enough. Support is English only, which won't bother a US buyer.

Standout features
  • Clear 15-device starting point
  • Monthly billing available
  • Fully functional 14-day trial
+Pros
  • ✓Small teams find the console simple
  • ✓Android, iOS, Windows and macOS in one tool
  • ✓Two to five technicians included by tier
−Cons
  • ✗Computers managed only from Enterprise
  • ✗OS patching locked to Ultra
  • ✗Best features sit in the priciest plans
Verdict

The best per-device pick for a mixed small business without Business Premium. Go with Enterprise if laptops are in the mix.

Cheapest paid entry for 10 to 25 devices

Scalefusion

4.2/5

At $2 per device, Scalefusion Essential is the cheapest paid multi-platform option on this list. Twenty devices cost $480 a year. The minimum is low, 10 devices, but the pricing page is firm: every plan is billed annually.

Watch the BYOD line. Separating work and personal data on an employee's own phone (Apple User Enrollment, Android work profile) starts at Growth, $3.50 per device. If part of your team uses personal phones, price Growth: $2,100 a year for 50 devices. Autopilot and OS patching wait until the Business plan.

Scalefusion also manages Linux and ChromeOS, still rare at this price. Customers mostly grumble about licenses sold in bundles and add-on features, and one comparison flags 1 GB of storage by default.

Standout features
  • $2 per device, the lowest entry price
  • Only a 10-device minimum
  • 14-day trial with nothing locked
+Pros
  • ✓Linux and ChromeOS supported
  • ✓Approachable console
  • ✓One to 25 admins depending on plan
−Cons
  • ✗Annual billing only
  • ✗BYOD only from Growth
  • ✗No migration tool from another MDM
Verdict

The best price for a first fleet of 10 to 25 company devices. Once personal phones are involved, budget for Growth.

4
Best for a growing Apple-only business

Jamf

4.2/5

Jamf runs two products for two sizes. Jamf Now, for organizations under 25 employees, starts at $4 per device per month. It's the simple option: enroll, set a passcode, push apps, wipe a lost iPhone. Some roundups still quote it as free for three devices and $2 after that; Jamf's own pricing page says from $4.

Past 25 devices, the main platform kicks in: $12.50 per Mac and $5.75 per iPhone or iPad per month, paid yearly, with a 25-device minimum. Twenty-five Macs come to $3,750 a year. That buys the deepest Apple management on this list, but it's a real jump from Jamf Now.

Before paying, look at Apple Business, now free, which includes built-in device management and zero-touch enrollment for devices bought from Apple or an authorized reseller. And compare Mosyle, which manages Apple devices for $1.

Standout features
  • Jamf Now built for teams under 25 employees
  • The deepest Apple management here
  • 14-day trial on request
+Pros
  • ✓Strong security and compliance for Macs
  • ✓Zero-touch with Apple Business
  • ✓Clear published prices
−Cons
  • ✗Apple only
  • ✗25-device minimum on the main platform
  • ✗Much pricier than Mosyle
Verdict

Jamf Now is a clean start for a small Apple-only team. Move up to the full platform only when you need its depth.

Best all-in-one without Microsoft 365

JumpCloud

4.1/5

JumpCloud is a cloud directory first and an MDM second. It creates employee accounts, enforces MFA, then manages the devices those people use. For a business on Google Workspace with no Active Directory, it fills the gap Intune fills for Microsoft shops. It shows up near the top of US results for small business MDM for that reason.

Pricing is per user, like Intune. The Device Management package is $9 per user per month on a yearly plan, so 30 employees cost $3,240 a year. MDM alone is $5 a la carte. One billing detail on the pricing page matters: suspended users are billed as normal users. Delete accounts when people leave.

JumpCloud lists Windows, Linux, macOS, iOS, iPadOS and Android. Computers need its agent installed on each machine. There's no free plan on the pricing page, only a 30-day trial.

Standout features
  • Directory, MFA and devices in one tool
  • Public per-user prices
  • Linux alongside Windows and macOS
+Pros
  • ✓Replaces a directory server for a small team
  • ✓MDM alone available at $5
  • ✓30-day trial
−Cons
  • ✗Pricier than per-device MDM when each person has one device
  • ✗Suspended users still billed
  • ✗Agent required on every computer
Verdict

The pick for Google Workspace teams that want one tool for identity and devices. On Business Premium, Intune covers the same ground at no extra cost.

Best free MDM up to 25 devices

ManageEngine MDM Plus

4.0/5

For a very small business, ManageEngine has the most generous free tier here: 25 devices, every feature, no time limit. An r/sysadmin commenter still called it a bit much for 20 phones. The console is dense and built with IT teams in mind.

The math changes at device 26. You move to the 50-device bundle, $645 a year in the cloud for Standard. That's still one of the smallest bills on the list, under $1.10 per device per month. At 100 devices, budget $1,195 a year.

One technician is included. If your managed service provider also needs a seat, add $445 a year in the cloud. ManageEngine is also the only tool here you can host on your own server.

Standout features
  • 25 free devices, all features
  • 50-device bundle at $645 a year
  • On-premises option
+Pros
  • ✓Lowest per-device cost at 50 and 100 devices
  • ✓ChromeOS supported
  • ✓30-day trial with unlimited devices
−Cons
  • ✗Dense console for a small team
  • ✗Only one technician included
  • ✗Jump to the 50-device bundle at device 26
Verdict

Unbeatable under 25 devices if you can live with an IT-style console. From 26 to 100 devices, still the cheapest at equal features.

7
Cheapest Apple-only MDM

Mosyle

4.0/5

Mosyle manages Apple devices only. If that's you, the free tier covers up to 30 devices, and Premium is $1 per device per month. Fifty Macs and iPhones cost $600 a year, a fraction of Jamf.

The threshold bites at device 31: you need at least 30 paid licenses, so $360 a year minimum. Switching from another Apple MDM? Mosyle offers an extended trial of up to six months and a migration credit, under conditions.

Mosyle Fuse adds Mac security and patching for $3 per Mac. If you only need enrollment and app distribution, free Apple Business may already cover you.

Standout features
  • Free up to 30 Apple devices
  • $1 per device after that
  • Up to six months' trial when you switch
+Pros
  • ✓Lowest-cost Apple MDM
  • ✓Zero-touch with Apple Business
  • ✓Fuse bundles Mac security
−Cons
  • ✗Apple only: no Android or Windows
  • ✗30-license minimum once you pay
  • ✗Mac security costs extra
Verdict

The best value for an all-Apple small business. The day an Android phone or Windows laptop shows up, you'll need a second tool.

8
Widest free tier, up to 50 devices

Miradore

3.8/5

Miradore, now part of GoTo, manages up to 50 Android, iOS, macOS and Windows devices for free after a 14-day trial, with no time limit. Nothing else on this list goes that far for free on a mixed fleet. One r/sysadmin user since 2020 calls it really reliable and easy to use, and another says it's great for small fleets.

The free tier has gaps: no update or patch deployment, and partial support for non-Samsung Android, according to customer reviews. The bigger trap is the cliff. At device 51, the whole fleet moves to Premium. At $2.75, 50 devices then cost $1,650 a year and 100 cost $3,300.

Miradore lets you pay monthly, at $3.30 per device. Below 15 paid devices, the pricing page notes minimum payment terms.

Standout features
  • 50 free devices, no time limit
  • Android, iOS, macOS and Windows
  • Monthly billing available
+Pros
  • ✓Widest free multi-platform tier
  • ✓Quick to learn
  • ✓No forced annual contract
−Cons
  • ✗No managed updates on Free
  • ✗Partial support for non-Samsung Android
  • ✗Whole fleet pays from device 51
Verdict

The best free starting point for a mixed fleet under 50 devices. If you'll pass 50 soon, compare ManageEngine now.

What your business may already pay for

Three common subscriptions already include device management. Check them before you compare the prices above.

Microsoft 365 Business Premium

Intune is included. Business Basic and Business Standard only get light mobile management. Check the licenses page in the admin center: if Business Premium is there, you can enroll laptops and phones today.

Google Workspace Business Plus

Advanced mobile management is included: wiping device data, Android work profiles, managed iOS apps and stronger passcode rules. On Business Starter or Standard you get basic management only, on by default. One r/sysadmin reply sums it up: pretty good for lite MDM management of phones.

Apple Business, free

Apple replaced Apple Business Manager with Apple Business, free in the US and more than 200 countries and regions, with built-in device management. Blueprints enroll devices bought from Apple or an authorized reseller with zero touch, and it creates Managed Apple Accounts and distributes apps.

Per user or per device: the break-even

Intune is $8 per person, Hexnode Enterprise $3.20 per device. Divide 8 by 3.2 and you get 2.5. Past two and a half devices per employee, per-user pricing wins. Laptop, phone and tablet each? Intune is cheaper.
  • List your Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace licenses before buying anything
  • Count devices a year out: the 25, 30 and 50 device caps change everything
  • Check the purchase minimum: 10 at Scalefusion, 15 at Hexnode, 25 at Jamf, 30 at Mosyle
  • Count admin seats: your managed service provider needs one
  • For personal phones, pick a plan that separates work from personal
Why small businesses buy MDM

Offboarding, BYOD, lost devices: what to do

At a small business, MDM earns its keep in four moments. Here's how to handle each one.

01

An employee leaves with a company phone

Most common

This is the story behind a lot of first MDM purchases. If the device is enrolled, lock it remotely on the last day, then wipe it. Without MDM, you depend on goodwill. Clean up accounts too: on JumpCloud, a suspended user stays on the bill until deleted.

Feature
Remote lock and wipe
Available in
All 8 ranked tools
02

Employees use their own phones

Don't enroll a personal phone as if the company owned it. Use an Android work profile or Apple User Enrollment, which keep work data in its own space so you can wipe that part only. Intune can protect Microsoft apps without full enrollment. Put the rules in writing and tell employees what the company can and can't see.

03

A laptop or phone goes missing

Lock it from the console, then wipe it if it doesn't turn up. Disk encryption, enforced ahead of time by your MDM, protects the data meanwhile. If you mostly need to locate laptops, Prey sells anti-theft tracking from $1.30 per device per month, though it isn't a full MDM.

Prepare
Enforce encryption before it's lost
04

A new hire starts Monday

Time saver

The time savings start at purchase. Buy iPhones and Macs from Apple or an authorized reseller so they appear in Apple Business. For Android, ask the reseller for zero-touch enrollment, or Knox for Samsung. Windows laptops go through Autopilot with Intune. Otherwise you'll factory reset every device by hand.

Buy from an authorized reseller
FAQ · 8 questions

MDM for small business · FAQ

  • Is there a free MDM for small business?
Yes, several. ManageEngine MDM Plus is free for 25 devices with every feature. Miradore is free for 50 devices with fewer features. Mosyle is free for 30 Apple devices, and Apple Business is free with built-in management for Apple devices.
  • How much does MDM cost per device?
Between $1 and $6 per device per month for the tools ranked here. Mosyle is $1 for Apple, Scalefusion starts at $2, Hexnode at $2.20, Miradore at $2.75 and Jamf Now at $4. Intune and JumpCloud charge per user instead.
  • Is Intune included in Microsoft 365 Business Premium?
Yes. Business Premium includes Intune, as do Microsoft 365 E3 and E5. Business Basic and Standard don't. Check your licenses in the admin center before paying for another MDM.
  • Do I need MDM for 10 employees?
If they carry company phones or laptops, yes. The first lost device or departing employee makes the case. At that size it's usually free: ManageEngine covers 25 devices, Miradore 50.
  • What happens when I pass a free tier's device cap?
Your whole fleet goes paid, not just the extra devices. At Miradore, device 51 moves all 51 to Premium. At ManageEngine, device 26 moves you to the $645 bundle for 50. At Mosyle, device 31 means buying 30 licenses.
  • What's the best MDM for an Apple-only small business?
Start with free Apple Business. If you need more control, Mosyle is free up to 30 devices and $1 per device after. Jamf Now starts at $4 per device for teams under 25 employees.
  • MDM vs UEM: which one does a small business need?
MDM manages phones and tablets; UEM adds laptops and desktops in the same console. Most tools here, Intune, Hexnode and Scalefusion included, do both. If you have laptops, check that your plan manages computers: at Hexnode that starts at Enterprise.
  • Can my MSP manage our MDM?
Yes, and many small businesses go that route. Count your provider as an admin seat: ManageEngine includes one technician, Hexnode Pro two, Scalefusion Essential one.
