What's the best IT asset management software in 2026?
The right tool isn't the one with the longest feature list. It's the one that sees your whole fleet without billing every server four times.
Your asset list lives in a spreadsheet. Half the laptops are missing, nobody knows who has the old ThinkPad from accounting, and a Microsoft license audit is coming. IT asset management (ITAM) software builds the inventory for you: it finds desktops, servers, printers and installed software, and keeps each device's history.
The short answer: if your team runs a help desk and doesn't want to host anything, pick Freshservice, but price the asset packs separately. If someone on staff can run a server, GLPI is open source and does inventory plus tickets for no license fee. ManageEngine AssetExplorer is the strongest on license compliance, Snipe-IT is the simplest way to track who has what, and OCS Inventory remains a free pure inventory if you already run it.
Prices come from each vendor's official pricing page. GLPI only publishes its cloud price in euros, so we give it in euros and say so.
The ranking is editorial: a sponsored placement is always labeled on its card, and no affiliate link ever changes a score.

How we compared and scored
The top results for this search are review directories, pages that rank tools based on paid referrals (one of them says so itself), and pricing roundups built on third-party numbers. Few of them show official prices side by side, and almost none explain how vendors count your assets.
We read each vendor's pricing page and documentation, then the forums where admins describe what goes wrong: renewal hikes, servers counted several times, CSV imports that fail, updates that break plugins. Our reader: the solo IT manager or small IT team at a company with 50 to 1,000 devices.
Lansweeper, NinjaOne, Device42, iTop and Atera are left out. Their pricing pages gave us no readable official amount, or only a quote, and we don't publish prices taken from third-party sites.

GLPI
GLPI comes from Teclib', a French publisher, and it's open source under the GPL. It does two jobs: IT asset inventory and an ITIL-style help desk. Add license tracking, contracts, suppliers and a knowledge base, and it's the broadest tool on this list for zero license cost.
Inventory runs through GLPI Agent on Windows, Linux, macOS and Android. The same agent handles network discovery and SNMP inventory, so it picks up printers and switches that can't run an agent. You don't need a second scanner for network gear.
The cloud price is the simplest we found: €19 per technician per month, with unlimited assets. Two technicians managing 500 devices pay €38 a month. GLPI only lists this price in euros, and the data is hosted in France on OVHcloud, which matters if you have EU customers. The public cloud caps inventory at 500 agent submissions an hour; beyond that, submissions are blocked for an hour, so stagger your agents' schedules.
The downside shows up on forums: setup takes time, and an update can break a plugin. Self-hosted, keep a test copy and update that one first. One admin on r/sysadmin runs it for daily scans across several sites without touching the ticketing side at all.
Tip: still running the old FusionInventory agent? Both agents can run side by side with different server URLs, so you can move machine by machine.
- Inventory and help desk in one tool
- Cross-platform agent with SNMP discovery
- Cloud hosted in France
- ✓No per-device license
- ✓Cloud priced per technician, unlimited assets
- ✓Paid vendor support available
- ✗Slow initial configuration
- ✗Plugins can break on updates
- ✗Price listed in euros only
The best ITAM tool for an SMB with basic sysadmin skills in-house. If nobody wants to run a server, Freshservice costs more but asks less of you.
Freshservice
Freshservice is Freshworks' service desk. It's a polished help desk first, with asset management on top. It discovers devices two ways: an agent on Windows, Mac and Linux, and a Discovery Probe that scans the network without agents. It can also pull in an existing SCCM inventory.
Technician seats are clear: $19 per agent per month on Starter, $49 on Growth, $99 on Pro, billed annually. Asset management is sold in packs of 500 units, from $125 a month. Read that part closely. A desktop or phone counts as 1 unit. A server, VM or network device counts as 4.
Do the math before you sign. 400 laptops plus 30 servers is 520 units, so you're into a second pack. Devices discovered beyond your quota aren't managed; they go to a trash list. In the Freshworks community, customers call the packs expensive when most of their assets are entered by hand through CSV anyway.
Software and SaaS license management only comes with the ITAM Pro plan. And it's cloud only: no self-hosted option.
Tip: purge duplicates and powered-off VMs before each renewal. Each one costs you four units for nothing.
- Agent plus agentless Discovery Probe
- The nicest help desk on this list
- Imports an existing SCCM inventory
- ✓Nothing to host or patch
- ✓Clear per-agent pricing
- ✓Fast ramp-up for the support team
- ✗A server counts as 4 asset units
- ✗Asset packs priced on top of seats
- ✗Cloud only
The best pick if you want a modern help desk and automatic inventory without hosting anything. With lots of servers and VMs, unit counting makes it pricier than GLPI fast.
ManageEngine AssetExplorer
AssetExplorer is ManageEngine's asset management product. Unlike GLPI and Freshservice, it has no help desk: it only does assets, and it goes deep. Agent and agentless discovery, barcodes, QR codes, RFID tags, full hardware lifecycle.
Its strength is software license compliance. It matches installed software against purchased licenses, handles suites, and assigns licenses automatically. When a vendor announces an audit, that report is what saves you. Smaller companies pay proportionally more in audit penalties than large ones, and Microsoft is the publisher admins fear most.
The free edition has no time limit: 25 assets on your own server, 50 in the cloud. That's enough for a very small office or a pilot in one department. Beyond that, the cloud plan for 250 assets is $1,245 a year, or $115 month to month; on your own server it's $955 a year.
The catch: the interface is dense and takes learning. Plan a few days to tune discovery and license rules before the reports are reliable.
Tip: pay annually. $1,245 a year versus 12 times $115 ($1,380) saves you about 10% on the 250-asset cloud plan.
- Deep software license compliance
- Barcodes, QR codes and RFID
- On-premises or cloud
- ✓Free edition with no time limit
- ✓Audit-ready license reports
- ✓Agent and agentless discovery
- ✗No help desk included
- ✗Cloud tiers published up to 1,000 assets
- ✗Dense interface
The best tool when license compliance is your main worry. If you also handle user requests, GLPI or Freshservice does both.
Snipe-IT
Snipe-IT isn't a scanner, it's a register. It tracks your hardware, licenses, accessories and consumables, and above all who has what. You check a laptop out to a person, print its QR label, and check it back in when they leave. For an IT team that lends a lot of equipment, it's very clean.
It's open source, and the vendor, Grokability, says it always will be free. Self-hosted, it costs nothing. If you'd rather not host it, the vendor does it for $39.99 a month with unlimited users and assets, then $99.99 and $249.99 for bigger setups.
The big limit: it discovers nothing on its own. Devices come in by hand, by CSV import, through its API or community scripts like Jamf2Snipe for Macs. CSV imports are picky: headers must match exactly and each model must exist first, as several GitHub issues show.
Plenty of schools and companies pair it with a scanner: Snipe-IT for the list and labels, another tool for what's actually on the network.
Tip: create every hardware model before your first import, then import a ten-row file to check the columns. It beats fixing a thousand records by hand.
- Check-out to a named person
- QR labels, loans and returns
- Open API and community scripts
- ✓Free when self-hosted
- ✓Simple interface, quick to learn
- ✓Unlimited users and assets
- ✗No network discovery
- ✗Strict CSV imports
- ✗No help desk
The best tool to know who holds which device, at zero cost. To see what's really running on your network, add GLPI or another scanner.
OCS Inventory NG
OCS Inventory NG is a French open source project that spent years as GLPI's sidekick: OCS collected the inventory, GLPI managed the rest through a plugin. Its agents run on Windows, Linux, Unix, macOS and Android. It also scans the network for devices without an agent and queries printers and switches over SNMP.
It's free, and that's the only price: no support pricing is published. You install it, maintain it and update it yourself.
Its limit fits in one sentence: it only does inventory. No tickets, no contracts, and a dated interface. Now that the GLPI agent does the same job, many teams are moving from OCS to the GLPI agent in stages. The trap is duplicates: the same machine reported twice, once by each agent.
Tip: if you migrate, pick a single unique key per machine (the serial number, not the hostname) and clean up duplicates in the first week.
- Agents for every common OS
- Network scan and SNMP
- Open source project
- ✓Free, no asset limit
- ✓Detailed hardware and software inventory
- ✓Integrates with GLPI
- ✗Inventory only, no help desk
- ✗Dated interface
- ✗No published commercial support
Keep it if it runs well for you. For a new project, GLPI and its agent do the same thing, plus a help desk.
What your ITAM tool really costs, and what it sees
Feature lists look alike. Three questions make the difference: how the vendor counts your assets, what the tool sees without an agent, and what "free" really costs.
Cost at 100 and 500 devices, per month
The asset-counting trap
Agent or agentless
What free really costs
- Count servers, VMs and network devices before asking for a quote
- Check whether the tool also discovers without an agent
- Ask where your data is hosted
- Check license and warranty tracking
- Ask what happens at renewal if your fleet grows
- Export your full inventory every quarter
Six steps to an inventory you can trust in month one
A badly launched ITAM tool turns back into a wrong spreadsheet within months. These six steps avoid the two classic failures: duplicates everywhere, and devices the tool never sees.
The steps
List what you need to see
BeforeDesktops, laptops, servers, VMs, printers, switches, phones. Note for each family whether it can run an agent. That list tells you whether you need agentless scanning, and how many units a SaaS tool will bill you.
- Time
- Half a day
Pick one unique key per device
BeforeHostnames change, serial numbers don't. Set the tool to recognize a machine by its serial number. That's what stops a renamed or reimaged laptop from showing up twice.
- Recommended key
- Serial number
Roll the agent out to one department
LaunchPush the agent to 10 to 20 machines in one team through your deployment tool or Group Policy. Check what comes back: software, serial number, user. Fix the settings before you touch the rest of the fleet.
- Pilot devices
- 10 to 20
Run the network scan
LaunchTurn on network discovery and SNMP for printers and switches. Compare the result with your starting list: every unknown device is either something you forgot or a security problem.
- Protocol

Match software to your licenses
AfterEnter the licenses you bought and their renewal dates, then compare with the software the agent found. You'll quickly see paid licenses nobody uses, and the ones you're short on before an audit.

IT asset management software · FAQ
What is the best free IT asset management software?
Snipe-IT if you mainly need to know who has which laptop: it's open source, with unlimited assets and users when you self-host it. GLPI if you also want discovery and a help desk in the same free tool. Both cost you a server and someone to maintain it.What's the difference between ITAM, ITSM and a CMDB?
ITAM tracks what you own: hardware, software licenses, contracts, costs. ITSM handles requests and incidents, which is your help desk. A CMDB maps how devices relate to each other and to the services they run. GLPI and Freshservice cover ITAM and ITSM; Snipe-IT only covers ITAM.Agent-based or agentless discovery: which one do I need?
Usually both. Agentless scanning (SNMP, WMI, SSH) finds printers, switches and anything plugged into the network at scan time. An agent on the device reports installed software and follows laptops that never come to the office. A remote-heavy team without agents has blind spots. How much does IT asset management software cost for 100 devices?
From $0 to a few hundred dollars a month. Snipe-IT hosted is $39.99 a month with unlimited assets. Freshservice Starter is $19 per agent plus asset packs from $125 a month per 500 units. ManageEngine AssetExplorer cloud is $1,245 a year for 250 assets. Is a spreadsheet good enough for a small business?
Up to 20 or 30 devices, often yes. Past that, forgotten licenses and laptops with no owner cost more than a free tool. AssetExplorer's free edition covers 25 assets on-premises and 50 in the cloud, with no time limit.Does IT asset management help with security?
Yes, it's usually the first step. You can't patch a machine you don't know about. An inventory shows unpatched devices, unlicensed software and unknown devices on the network. It doesn't replace endpoint protection or patch management. Why aren't Lansweeper or NinjaOne in this ranking?
We only rank tools whose price we could read on the vendor's official pricing page. Lansweeper's pricing page gave us no readable amount, and we couldn't confirm the limits of its free plan on an official page either, so we leave it out rather than guess. NinjaOne publishes only a per-device range, with the actual price set by quote. We don't publish prices copied from third-party sites. Closest alternatives here: GLPI with its agent for automatic discovery, or Freshservice if you want everything in the cloud.Where is my asset data hosted?
GLPI Network Cloud hosts your data in France, on OVHcloud, which helps if you answer to GDPR. With the other cloud vendors, the data center region is chosen or shown when you sign up: check it before you import your inventory. Self-hosted GLPI, OCS or Snipe-IT keep everything on your own servers.
