What's the best mockup generator in 2026?

The one that lets you sell what you download. License matters more than price: a free mockup limited to personal use can't go on your Etsy listing.

A mockup generator drops your design (a logo, an illustration, a screenshot) onto a realistic photo: a tee on a model, a mug on a desk, an iPhone in someone's hand. You get a product shot with no photoshoot and no Photoshop. Two kinds get mixed up all the time: physical product mockups (apparel, packaging, merch) and screen mockups (websites, apps).

The short answer: Placeit is our top pick, with the biggest library of lifestyle scenes for print on demand, with billing you need to watch. Mockuuups Studio is the best for screens. If you sell through Printify, its generator is free, unlimited and watermark-free. Mockey AI gives a wide free choice, Dynamic Mockups the volume tool.

One tool is gone: Smartmockups' address now redirects to Canva's mockups. If a roundup still recommends it, the roundup is stale.

Our method

How we compared and scored

Most top results for this search are written by a mockup vendor that ranks itself first. They mix UI wireframing tools with product mockups, rarely give a yearly cost, and almost never say whether a free download can be used commercially. A few still recommend Smartmockups, which no longer exists.

We read each vendor's pricing page, license terms and help docs, then user feedback from reviews and seller forums. The core criterion: what you can download for free, at what quality and for what use (watermark, commercial license), then what unlimited costs. Wireframing tools like Balsamiq are out of scope here: they draw an app, they don't stage it.

All five criteria carry the same weight. It's the grid of every review on our site, which keeps a tool's score identical everywhere. Printify already has a full review with us, and its score carries over unchanged.

What about Canva? It does mockups too, and the old Smartmockups address now redirects to its mockups page. We don't rank it here: it's a general design tool with no mockup-specific license or price, and it already has its own "switch from Canva" page with us. If you already pay for Canva, try its mockups before buying a second tool.

1
Best for print on demand

Placeit

4.0/5

Placeit, owned by Envato, is the tool Etsy sellers mention most. Its strength: thousands of lifestyle scenes, models of every type, and MP4 video mockups. You download PNGs, and a commercial license comes with every download, covering ads, listings and social posts.

The unlimited plan shows $89.69 for the first year, about $7.47 a month. The page says that price applies to the first year of the annual plan only and doesn't show the renewal rate, so check it before you pay. The pricing page also contradicts itself (58% off in one spot, 33% in the FAQ).

The weak spot is billing. User reviews keep coming back to annual plans mistaken for monthly, charges after cancelling and refused refunds. One rule worth knowing: your first download locks in a one-month minimum. With no download, you can cancel anytime.

Standout features
  • Lifestyle scenes with diverse models
  • MP4 video mockups
  • Commercial license on every download
+Pros
  • ✓Deepest apparel library here
  • ✓Unlimited downloads
  • ✓15% off for Printful merchants
−Cons
  • ✗Renewal price to check after year one
  • ✗One-month minimum after your first download
  • ✗Many complaints about cancelling
Verdict

The pick if you're launching a tee shop and on-model shots drive sales. Put the renewal date in your calendar the day you pay, and cancel early if you stop using it.

Best for screen mockups

Mockuuups Studio

4.0/5

Mockuuups Studio specializes in screens: iPhones, MacBooks, tablets, displays in real settings. Paste a URL and it captures the site, or upload your design. The paid plan gives you 5,300+ mockups, shareable preview links and a commercial license.

The rare upside: you don't have to subscribe. Exports sell individually at $5 for one, $13.80 for three, $21.50 for five and $39 for ten ($3.90 each). The subscription is $20 monthly or $12 a month billed yearly. Students and teachers get 50% off, and prices drop automatically in many countries.

The limit: it's a screen tool. For a tee on a model or a mug, Placeit or Printify do better. And the 5 trial exports are personal use only, so they can't go on a client's page.

Standout features
  • Captures a site from its URL
  • Pay per export, no subscription
  • Commercial license on packs and plans
+Pros
  • ✓5 trial exports, no card
  • ✓50% off for students and teachers
  • ✓Team at $18 per person per month
−Cons
  • ✗Few physical products
  • ✗Trial exports are personal use only
  • ✗$20 monthly costs more than yearly
Verdict

The right call for showing off a site or app. If you only make a handful a year, buy a 10-pack instead of a subscription.

Best free option for Printify sellers

Printify

3.9/5

Printify's generator is free, unlimited and watermark-free for every product in its catalog. You place your design in the product editor, then download mockups on a white or transparent background, or grab them all at once from My products. They're ready for your store, ads and socials.

AI scenes (your product in a lifestyle setting) are Premium only, with 10 attempts every 24 hours on select products. Premium is $39 a month with no commitment, or $24.99 a month billed yearly, which is $299.88 a year. It mostly exists to lower product costs, so don't buy it just for mockups.

The limit is clear: Printify products only. If you also sell through another provider, or your own product, you'll need a second tool. Printful does the same thing, free, for its own catalog.

Standout features
  • Unlimited and watermark-free
  • White or transparent background
  • Download every mockup of a product at once
+Pros
  • ✓$0 for standard mockups
  • ✓No license question for your store
  • ✓Mockups tied to the real product you sell
−Cons
  • ✗Printify catalog only
  • ✗AI scenes are Premium only
  • ✗Little staging without AI
Verdict

If you sell through Printify, start here before paying for anything. Add Placeit only for on-model shots.

Best all-round free option

Mockey AI

3.9/5

Mockey AI offers a big mockup library plus AI tools to generate scenes. The free plan lets you create and download mockups with no watermark, but as JPG only (PNG needs a paid plan), and free downloads are for personal use only.

Paid plans start at $7 a month and include a commercial license: Shopify stores, Etsy or Amazon listings, ads, social posts and client work, royalty-free.

The limit: the free plan isn't for selling. For a store, you need a paid plan.

Standout features
  • 30,000+ mockups to customize
  • Free downloads with no watermark
  • Commercial use from $7 a month
+Pros
  • ✓Royalty-free commercial license on paid plans
  • ✓Wide choice with no subscription
  • ✓Paid plans from $7 a month
−Cons
  • ✗Free plan is personal use only
  • ✗JPG only on the free plan
  • ✗PNG needs a paid plan
Verdict

The broadest free option to learn on. Go paid the day a mockup goes on your store.

Best for volume

Dynamic Mockups

3.8/5

Dynamic Mockups renders your own Photoshop files. Upload a PSD, and it swaps the layer that holds the design (the smart object, which you name "Design") and outputs as many variations as you need. Change colorway, design or product and it batches everything. An API lets you plug it into your store or an automation tool.

The free plan gives 50 credits once, watermark-free web exports and three AI images a day. API renders, though, carry a watermark on the free plan. Pro is $15 a month billed yearly with 3,600 credits a year, and top-ups cost $0.051 per credit. The same page says a single export costs one credit in one place and calls single exports unlimited in another, so check it in your account.

The limit: the staging is only as good as your PSDs. User reviews find it less flexible than Photoshop for hands-on edits.

Standout features
  • Your own PSDs, automated
  • Batch variations
  • API for automation
+Pros
  • ✓Cheapest per image at high volume
  • ✓Watermark-free web exports, even free
  • ✓Works with Make or your own code
−Cons
  • ✗Watermarked API renders on free
  • ✗Needs well-built PSDs
  • ✗Credit rules unclear on the page
Verdict

The tool once you're past fifty images a month. Below that, Mockey or Placeit are faster.

Best for designing and mocking up

Kittl

3.7/5

Kittl is a design tool first (type, illustration, AI), with a mockup catalog to show off the result. You build your design and drop it on a tee or hoodie without switching apps. Premium mockups sit in the paid catalog.

Pro is $12 a month and Expert $26 a month, per editor and billed yearly, so $144 and $312 over a year. Expert adds 200 AI tokens a day. Pro and Expert include a commercial license for up to 500,000 copies of your design; past that, their license no longer covers you.

The limit: the commercial license starts with Pro. If your design is already done, paying for Kittl just for mockups makes little sense.

Standout features
  • Design and mockup in one tool
  • License up to 500,000 copies
  • AI design tools
+Pros
  • ✓Handy for printed apparel
  • ✓Expert: 200 AI tokens a day
  • ✓Very rich typography
−Cons
  • ✗No commercial rights on free
  • ✗Premium mockups are paid
  • ✗Overkill if your design is ready
Verdict

Pick it if you create designs from scratch. If your file is ready, a pure mockup tool will cost you less.

Simplest month-to-month

Mediamodifier

3.5/5

Mediamodifier offers a library of product and device mockups and accepts your own PSD files. Professional is $19 a month with unlimited downloads and storage and a commercial license. Team, for five members, is $45 a month, and each extra member is $9.

The pricing page shows two different yearly prices for Professional, so we don't quote either: check the one you're billed. Refunds can be requested within 14 days of purchase.

The limit: the free account is misleading. You can sign up for free, but downloads cost money, and the vendor itself admits in replies to reviews that the pricing page could be clearer.

Standout features
  • Unlimited downloads
  • Your own PSDs
  • Five-member team plan
+Pros
  • ✓Clear commercial license
  • ✓Refund window of 14 days
  • ✓Fast once your PSDs are loaded
−Cons
  • ✗No real free plan
  • ✗Conflicting yearly price on the page
  • ✗Mixed user reviews
Verdict

A solid team tool, but at $19 monthly it's up against Mockuuups, which is cheaper on annual billing ($12 a month; $20 month to month). Choose it if PSDs are the core of your workflow.

Real cost

What you'll really pay in a year

The big number is usually the yearly price, paid upfront. Month to month costs more. Here are three real cases, worked out from vendor prices.

Just you, unlimited, for a year

Placeit: $89.69 the first year. Mockuuups: $144. Dynamic Mockups Pro: $180. Mediamodifier Professional monthly: $228. Month to month, Mockuuups climbs to $240.

A few mockups a month

At Mockuuups, ten exports cost $39 ($3.90 each). The $144 yearly plan wins past about 37 exports a year. Within a single month, the $20 plan beats packs from five exports ($21.50 as a pack). And if you sell through Printify or Printful, your first mockup costs nothing.

Hidden costs

Placeit's one-month minimum after your first download, the renewal price after year one, AI credits at Dynamic Mockups, and the watermark on free Dynamic Mockups API renders.
  • Check the commercial license covers your plan.
  • Compare yearly and monthly prices.
  • Calendar the renewal date the day you pay.
  • Look at the free plan's export size.
  • Check for a watermark before paying.
  • Count last month's mockups before choosing packs or a plan.

Six tips to pay less and sell more

What sellers and designers who use mockups all year keep coming back to, from forums, reviews and vendor docs.

01

Start with your print provider's generator

Budget

Printify and Printful give away unlimited mockups for their own catalog. If you sell through them, you already have the basics for free. A paid tool only adds on-model and lifestyle shots.

Cost

02

Grab Printful's 15% off Placeit

Budget

Printful advertises 15% off any Placeit subscription for its merchants. Open a Printful account before subscribing to Placeit, even if you print elsewhere.

03

Browse Placeit before downloading

Trap

The one-month minimum only starts with your first download. If you're unsure, browse the library without downloading. Once subscribed, cancel before the renewal date rather than letting the plan run.

Minimum
1 month after download
04

Pay per export if you make few

Budget

Mockuuups sells ten exports for $39. For a site you show off once a quarter, that beats a subscription. Students and teachers get 50% off every plan.

05

Name your layer "Design"

Automation

Dynamic Mockups automates your PSDs when the smart object that holds the artwork is named "Design". Build one PSD per product with that name, then batch every colorway.

Keep your old Smartmockups exports

Caution

Mockups you exported from Smartmockups before it closed are already on your drive. Don't rebuild them out of habit: keep them and only recreate what's missing.

How to choose

Physical product or screen? Start there

Most disappointed buyers picked a good tool for the wrong kind of mockup. Pick your category first, then your budget.

Apparel and merch: Placeit, Printify, Mockey

You sell tees, mugs, posters. On-model shots make the difference, and Placeit has the most. If you print with Printify or Printful, start with their free generator.

Screens: Mockuuups Studio

You're presenting a site, an app or a dashboard. Mockuuups captures a site from its URL and sells per export. Its export packs are enough for the occasional screenshot.

Volume: Dynamic Mockups

Hundreds of variations a month: Dynamic Mockups with your PSDs, with 3,600 credits a year on Pro.
  • Mockup going on a store? You need a commercial license.
  • Printing with Printify or Printful? Their generator first.
  • Showing a site? Mockuuups.
  • Over fifty images a month? Dynamic Mockups.
FAQ · 8 questions

Mockup generators · FAQ

  • What's the best free mockup generator?
If you sell through Printify or Printful, their own generator: unlimited, no watermark, for their products. Otherwise, Mockey AI's free plan to try things, with a catch: JPG only and personal use. To sell, Placeit includes a commercial license with every download.
  • Can I sell products using a free mockup?
Not always. Mockey's free plan and Mockuuups trial exports are personal use only, and Kittl's free plan carries no commercial rights. Check the license of your plan before it goes on your store.
  • Does Smartmockups still exist?
No. smartmockups.com now redirects to Canva's mockups. Mockups you exported before are still on your drive.
  • How do I cancel Placeit without getting charged?
Cancel from your account before the renewal date, ideally a business day early. If you haven't downloaded anything, no minimum applies. After a download, the minimum is one month.
  • Do I need Photoshop to make mockups?
No. Placeit, Mockey and Printify run in the browser with no PSD. Photoshop only matters if you want your own scenes, and then Dynamic Mockups or Mediamodifier can render your PSDs in batches.
  • What image size do I need for Etsy or Shopify?
Export at the largest size your plan allows, and check your platform's help for its minimum. The small JPG on free plans is fine for trying things, not for selling.
  • Are AI mockup generators worth it?
For varying backgrounds, yes: Printify Premium, Mockey AI and Dynamic Mockups generate scenes from a prompt. For a product listing, check every image, since AI can warp a logo or a fabric fold. These features burn limited credits.
  • Mockup vs wireframe: what's the difference?
A wireframe sketches an app screen while it's being designed. A mockup stages a finished design on a device or product. To present a finished app, use Mockuuups Studio; to design it, a tool like Figma.
