Which social media tool should a small business pick in 2026?
Judge a tool by the bill for your second user, not by the headline price.
In a small business, social media is rarely someone's full-time job. It's the marketing lead, the owner or a part-time hire posting between other tasks, on a Facebook page, an Instagram account, a LinkedIn page and often a Google Business Profile. So you need a tool that saves time without a training course, and whose price doesn't double the day a second person logs in.
We compared seven tools using their official pricing pages, help docs and user reviews, with a focus on the complaints. The short answer: Metricool for most small businesses, because one brand covers all your networks from $20 a month. Agorapulse if you get a lot of comments and messages to handle. Buffer if you want the fastest setup and a usable free plan. Vista Social if you want a full feature set at a flat price for a small team. Hootsuite only once you have a real social team.
One rule before you compare: count your profiles and your users. They drive the bill far more than the sticker price.
The ranking is editorial: a sponsored placement is always labeled on its card, and no affiliate link changes a score.

The 7 tools compared for a small business
Rank follows the score, the one each tool has everywhere on the site. On a tie, the needs of a 1 to 5 person team decide: Metricool sits above Agorapulse, whose per-user pricing weighs heavily on a small team. Price is the first paid plan, billed yearly.

How we compared and scored
A small business isn't looking for the most powerful tool. It wants one that fits the budget with two people logged in, covers the networks its customers use (usually LinkedIn and Instagram, sometimes a Google Business Profile), and that a busy person actually opens every week.
We read each tool's official pricing page, its profile and user limits, what its free plan leaves out, and hundreds of user reviews, mostly complaints: failed posts, disconnected accounts, surprise renewals. Then we priced every tool for the same typical team: two people, eight social profiles, billed yearly.
Some tools are left out on purpose. Sprout Social is strong but starts at $79 per seat for only 5 profiles, which makes it a big-team tool. Later is still built around Instagram and has no free plan. Zoho Social shows up in many US lists, but its pricing page didn't let us read an official price. Meta Business Suite is free but only covers Facebook and Instagram; we cover it in the FAQ.
A tool has the same score everywhere on the site. Vista Social, SocialBee and Iconosquare keep the score from their review page; the others keep the one from our main ranking of social media management tools.

The ranking is editorial: a sponsored placement is always labeled on its card, and no affiliate link changes a score.
Metricool
Metricool prices by brand, not by profile or user. A brand groups one company's accounts: your Facebook page, Instagram, LinkedIn page, TikTok and Google Business Profile. For a business with a single brand, that's the best math in this ranking: Starter costs $20 a month billed yearly ($25 monthly) and already covers up to five brands.
It covers the whole job: calendar, scheduling, inbox, analytics and reports, plus an AI writing assistant. It also schedules Google Business Profile posts and lets you answer reviews from the inbox, which matters for a local shop or practice. The publisher, Metricool Software, is based in Spain.
Where it falls short: teamwork. Roles and post approval are only on Advanced, at $53 a month billed yearly. The free plan leaves out LinkedIn and X, which rules it out for many B2B businesses. Some users also report support that goes through a slow chatbot before a human.
Tip: start on Starter if one person posts, and move to Advanced only when someone has to approve posts before they go out.
- Priced per brand, not per profile
- Google Business Profile posts and reviews
- Analytics and reports included
- ✓Cheapest for a single-brand business
- ✓Every network in one calendar
- ✓Low entry price
- ✗Free plan without LinkedIn or X
- ✗Approvals and roles on Advanced only
- ✗Chatbot before human support
The best starting point for a small business: a low price that doesn't climb with each network. Budget for Advanced if posts need sign-off.
Agorapulse
Agorapulse, founded in France, is known for its inbox: comments, DMs and mentions from every network land in one place, and you work through them like email, down to zero. If your customers ask questions under your posts, it's the strongest tool here.
Pricing is simple: every user pays the same rate, $79 a month billed yearly on Standard ($99 monthly), with 10 social profiles included. First support response is listed at under six hours on Standard and under two hours on Professional. The trial runs 30 days with no credit card.
Where it falls short: that per-user price. With two people, Standard comes to $158 a month billed yearly, double Vista Social and almost three times Metricool Advanced. Reviewers say it plainly: they like the product, less so the bill once the team is small. Some also report account connections that expire and cause failed posts.
Tip: one Standard seat is often enough if that person runs the inbox and others send content their way. Use the 30-day trial to connect every profile and check your real message volume.
- Unified social inbox
- Fast human support response times
- 30-day trial without a card
- ✓Best message handling here
- ✓10 profiles per user
- ✓Reports an owner can read
- ✗Every user pays full price
- ✗Extra profiles cost extra
- ✗Account connections need watching
The pick when social is a customer service channel. If you mostly publish, the per-user price is hard to justify.
Buffer
Buffer is the simplest tool here. Connect your accounts, write, pick a slot, done. Reviewers lead with that ease of use, and plenty of them land on Buffer after leaving a heavier tool.
Pricing is per channel. The free plan covers three channels and ten scheduled posts per channel, for one user: enough to run a week on three networks. Essentials costs $5 per channel per month, for one user. Team costs $10 per channel, with as many members as you like. For eight channels on Team, plan on $80 a month.
Where it falls short: depth. The inbox and analytics are light next to Agorapulse or Metricool, and per-channel pricing adds up fast once you add a Google profile, TikTok and Pinterest. Some users report failed Pinterest posts.
Tip: if only one person posts, Essentials does the job at half the price of Team for the same channels. Switch to Team only when a colleague needs to log in.
- Fastest setup
- Free on 3 channels
- Unlimited members on Team
- ✓Simplest interface
- ✓Clear per-channel pricing
- ✓Useful free plan
- ✗Light inbox and analytics
- ✗Bill grows with each channel
- ✗Occasional failed Pinterest posts
The easiest tool to adopt for a small business that mainly publishes. Once replies and reports matter, look at Metricool or Agorapulse.
Vista Social
Vista Social charges a plan price, not a seat price. Its first plan, Professional, costs $99 a month monthly or $950 a year, about $79 a month, for 15 profiles and two users. For our typical two-person team, that's half of Agorapulse for a comparable inbox and reporting.
It covers all the major networks, and reviewers praise its simplicity and value. Many say they moved over from Sprout Social or Hootsuite.
Where it falls short: add-ons. X costs $29 a month extra, web listening $75, and Zapier or Make connections require Advanced at $199. Reviews also mention trouble connecting some accounts, especially Facebook and LinkedIn.
Tip: if you don't post on X, skip the add-on; the base plan is enough. The 14-day trial needs no card.
- 15 profiles and 2 users included
- Inbox and reports
- Flat price, not per seat
- ✓Very complete for the price
- ✓Inbox and reports included
- ✓Trial without a card
- ✗X is a $29 add-on
- ✗No free plan
- ✗Facebook and LinkedIn connections can be tricky
The best Agorapulse alternative for a small team that wants almost everything without paying per seat. Check the add-ons before committing for a year.
Iconosquare
Iconosquare started as an Instagram analytics tool and that's still its strength: best times to post, performance by format, competitor tracking. For a visual business, it's the tool that best answers the question "what works for us?".
Pricing starts low and is shown in euros. The free plan keeps two profiles and ten posts per profile per month. Starter costs €9 a month for three profiles, €15 for five, with one user. Team use starts on Scale, from €69 a month for five profiles and three users; ten profiles cost €119.
Where it falls short: outside Instagram, TikTok and Facebook it's less at home, and value drops quickly once you need several users. For a B2B business focused on LinkedIn, it's the wrong tool.
Tip: one person running three visual accounts can stay on Starter at €9 and keep Meta Business Suite for DMs.
- Instagram and TikTok analytics
- Competitor tracking
- Starter at €9
- ✓Deepest analytics here
- ✓Very low entry price
- ✓Free plan to try
- ✗Less useful for LinkedIn
- ✗Team use from €69
- ✗Average value for teams
The pick for a business that sells through images and wants precise numbers. For a mostly LinkedIn presence, look elsewhere.
Hootsuite
Hootsuite is the best-known name in the category, and often the first one a small business looks at. It covers the most networks and integrations, with AI writing on every plan, competitor benchmarking and advanced reporting.
But its pricing is built for big teams. Standard starts at $99 per user per month billed yearly, with ten social accounts; Professional at $199. There's no free plan anymore, only a 14-day trial. For our typical two-person team, Standard comes to $198 a month, the highest bill in this ranking.
Where it falls short: price and customer relations. User reviews mostly complain about billing, renewals and hard-to-reach support. Accounts that disconnect come up often too.
Tip: if you try it, note the trial end date and turn off auto-renewal before it. For a small business, save it for the day you have a real social team.
- Most networks and integrations
- AI writing included
- Competitor benchmarking
- ✓Very complete
- ✓Well-known brand, many integrations
- ✓Unlimited accounts from Professional
- ✗Priciest for a small business
- ✗No free plan
- ✗Harsh reviews on billing
Powerful but oversized for a small business. The same budget covers Metricool Advanced and Vista Social together, with room to spare.
What roundups don't tell small businesses
The lists at the top of Google give a starting price per tool. A small business needs a different answer: what will I pay with my team and my networks, and what breaks in the first month?
You post alone
Metricool Starter ($20 a month billed yearly) to have everything in one place. Buffer Essentials ($5 per channel) for the simplest option. Buffer's free plan if three channels are enough.
There are two or three of you
For two people and eight profiles, billed yearly: Metricool Advanced $53, SocialBee Accelerate $59 (monthly), Vista Social about $79, Buffer Team $80, Agorapulse $158, Hootsuite $198. The spread is nearly four to one.
Customers write under your posts
The inbox becomes the main criterion. Agorapulse is the most polished; Vista Social and Metricool cover the essentials for less. Connect every profile during the trial to measure your real volume.
- Are LinkedIn and X on the plan you'll pay for, free plan included?
- Is pricing per user, per channel or per brand? Redo the math with your team.
- Does the listed price include tax, and is it in dollars or euros?
- Is post approval included, or only on the plan above?
- When does the yearly plan renew, and how do you turn it off?
- Does the tool alert you when an account disconnects or a post fails?

Tips
List your profiles before comparing
Facebook page, Instagram, LinkedIn page, the owner's LinkedIn profile, TikTok, Google Business Profile: a small business often has seven or eight. At Buffer each channel is billed; at Metricool they fit in one brand; at Agorapulse ten come with each user.
- Typical team
- 8 profiles, 2 people
Turn on failed-post alerts
Every tool sometimes loses its connection to an account, and the post doesn't go out. Reviews say so for every tool in this ranking. Turn on failure notifications and reconnect at the first alert.
- Check
- Every Monday, 2 minutes
Schedule the whole week at once
Block one hour on Monday to write and schedule the week. At SocialBee, categories fill the gaps; at Buffer, the queue drops posts into fixed slots you set once.
- Target
- 1 hour a week
Write down the renewal date
Yearly billing saves about 20% at Metricool, Agorapulse and Vista Social. But it renews on its own: set a reminder a month before, especially at Hootsuite, where reviews complain about renewals.
- Reminder
- 1 month before renewal
Don't forget your Google Business Profile
For a shop, a practice or a contractor, the Google profile matters as much as a social network. Metricool schedules its posts and lets you answer reviews from its inbox.
- Tool
- Metricool
Pair a free plan with the native tool
To start for free: Meta Business Suite for Facebook and Instagram, plus Buffer's free plan (three channels) for your other networks. Less convenient than one tool, but enough for a few posts a week.

Social media for small business · FAQ
What is the best free social media management tool for a small business?
Buffer: its free plan covers three channels with ten scheduled posts each. Metricool's free plan has richer analytics but leaves out LinkedIn and X. Iconosquare's free plan keeps two profiles, best for Instagram.
How much does a social media management tool cost for a small business?
For two people and eight profiles, billed yearly, from $53 a month (Metricool Advanced) to $198 (Hootsuite Standard). In between: Vista Social about $79, Buffer Team $80, Agorapulse $158. How a tool counts (user, channel or brand) matters more than the listed price.
Is Meta Business Suite enough for a small business?
Yes if you only post on Facebook and Instagram: it's free and also pulls in messages from both. It doesn't handle LinkedIn, TikTok or your Google profile. As soon as LinkedIn matters, you need a second tool.
Is Hootsuite worth it for a small business?
Rarely. At $99 per user per month billed yearly and no free plan, two people cost $198 a month. Metricool or Vista Social cover what most small businesses need for well under half that.
Can these tools schedule Google Business Profile posts?
Metricool does, and it lets you reply to reviews from its inbox. That's a real plus for a local business, and most roundups skip it.
Is X included in every tool?
No. Vista Social sells it as a $29 a month add-on, and Metricool's free plan leaves it out. Check X on the pricing page before you compare two bills. If X isn't a key channel for you, don't connect it.
Should I pay monthly or yearly?
Monthly for the first quarter, until you know the tool is really used, then yearly. The gap is about 20% at Metricool, Agorapulse and Vista Social. Write down the renewal date the day you buy.
Buffer or Metricool for a small business?
Buffer if you mostly schedule and want the simplest tool, priced per channel. Metricool if you also want analytics, an inbox and Google profile posts, priced per brand. With more than five channels, Metricool usually costs less.
SocialBee
SocialBee sorts your posts into categories: tips, promotions, testimonials, blog posts. Each category gets its own time slots, and evergreen posts come back around on their own. For a business posting with little time, it's the easiest way to keep your accounts active.
Bootstrap costs $29 a month for five profiles and one user; Accelerate $49 for ten profiles. Each extra user is $10 a month. For two people and eight profiles, plan on $59 a month on Accelerate.
Where it falls short: setup. You have to create categories, give them slots and fill them before the tool pays off. Reviews also mention an interface that can feel slow for simple tasks.
Tip: start with just three categories (tip, proof, offer) and about twenty posts each. Recycling starts paying off in month two.
The right tool if you already have content and want it in rotation. Starting from scratch, Metricool or Buffer pay off sooner.
