Which POS actually runs your loyalty program for you?
Five POS systems compared on one moment: the customer pays, and the points land on their own.
The short answer: Square if you want the most complete program and you're fine on the Plus plan, Lightspeed Retail if you run an established store and need to carry over an old program, Odoo if you want fine-grained reward rules with no loyalty fee, Loyverse if you want points for $0. Shopify POS has no loyalty of its own: you add an app, and that app bills by order volume.
We looked at the same scene in every tool. A regular walks up, gets recognized, earns points, then redeems a reward. And we dug for what product pages skip: the plan you need to unlock loyalty, the phone-number lookup that slows down the line at lunch, the app fee that climbs with every small ticket.
Your profile in one line. Coffee shop or bakery on Square already: move to Plus. Multi-staff retail store switching systems: Lightspeed. Shop that wants stock, accounting and loyalty in one database: Odoo. Tight budget: Loyverse. Online brand opening a store: Shopify POS plus a loyalty app.
The ranking is editorial: a sponsored spot is always labeled on its listing, and no affiliate link changes a score.
Which POS has a loyalty program built in?
On a feature page, "loyalty" can mean three different things. The program lives inside the POS at no extra cost. Or it's unlocked by a paid plan from the same vendor. Or the POS has none, and you plug in an app from someone else. All three work at the counter. They don't cost the same once your store gets busy.
The rank follows loyalty quality for a small US store. The score out of 5 is the score of the whole POS, the same one as in our POS system ranking. That's why Odoo, with the highest score here, sits third: its loyalty is excellent, but setting it up takes real work.
| How loyalty works at the counter | Plan and price for loyalty | |
|---|---|---|
| SquareIncluded in Plus | Points per visit, per dollar or per item. VIP tiers that multiply points (1.5x, 2x, 3x), Apple Wallet passes, automatic texts. | Loyalty comes with Square Plus at $49/mo per location. Not on the Free plan. Premium at $149/mo. 30-day trial. |
| Lightspeed RetailIncluded on every plan | Points, birthday offers and VIP perks. Points earned whatever the payment method, and balances from an old program can be imported. | In-store and online loyalty on Basic $89, Core $149 and Plus $289 per month. Up to 18% off with yearly billing. Advanced Marketing add-on, price not listed. |
| OdooIncluded in Point of Sale | A checkbox in the Point of Sale settings. Points on every sale, a Rewards button at the threshold, discount or free product, expiry rules. | No loyalty fee. Point of Sale alone is free (one app, unlimited users). Standard at $31.10 per user/mo in year one if you add a second app. |
| LoyverseFree | Points program in the free toolset, to bring customers back. | $0. Paid add-ons ($7 and $25/mo per store) cover history, employees and inventory, not loyalty. |
| Shopify POSThird-party app | No native points program. Smile.io, for one, lets customers earn and redeem points in store on all its plans. | Smile.io free up to 200 orders/mo, then $15, $79 or $199/mo. Shopify Basic from $39/mo on top. POS Pro ($89/mo per location) adds loyalty insights only. |
Prices checked in 2026 on vendor pages. Scores come from our POS system ranking. Clover offers rewards too, but we couldn't read its loyalty pricing on Clover's own pages, so it isn't ranked here.
Square
Square Loyalty is the most complete program in this comparison. You reward per visit, per dollar spent or per item bought. Customers sign up with their phone number, get a pass in Apple Wallet, and receive automatic texts when they earn or get close to a reward. VIP tiers multiply points by 1.5x, 2x or 3x, so your best customers feel the difference.
The pricing changed in 2025. Square folded loyalty into its Plus plan, at $49 a month per location, alongside other software it used to sell separately. The Free plan doesn't include it, and Premium at $149 a month covers nearly all of Square's software. If you already pay for Plus, loyalty costs you nothing more. If you're on Free, the real price of loyalty is $49 a month.
Two warnings come from merchants on Square's own community forum. Looking customers up by phone number gets slow during a rush, and cash payers are easy to miss: one owner asked for a card or barcode scan instead. Put the sign-up QR code by the register so people enroll themselves. And a coffee roaster sets a $5 minimum purchase to earn a star, so nobody splits one order into ten visits to drain the program.
Is it worth it? An ice cream shop owner on the same forum worked out a cost of about 1.43 cents per dollar of sales, rewards included, with members spending $27.12 per ticket against $14.03 for everyone else. Those are self-reported numbers, not an average. Use the 30-day trial to run your own.
- Rewards per visit, per dollar or per item
- VIP tiers at 1.5x, 2x and 3x points
- Apple Wallet passes and automatic texts
- Dashboard comparing members and non-members
- ✓The richest program in this comparison
- ✓Included in Plus, no per-visit billing
- ✓30-day trial, no contract
- ✗Not on the Free plan: $49/mo per location
- ✗Phone lookup slows the line at peak hours
- ✗You have to process payments with Square
Our top pick if you sell to regulars and want loyalty that runs itself, with numbers to prove it pays. If you're on Square Free and don't need Plus for anything else, Loyverse gets you points for $0.
Lightspeed Retail
Lightspeed puts in-store and online loyalty on all three Retail plans, so you never pay extra for points. Customers earn whatever way they pay, which matters if a good share of your sales are cash. You can send a birthday reward and give your top customers VIP status.
Its unique strength is migration. If you're coming from another POS or a paper card system tracked in a spreadsheet, Lightspeed imports the point balances of your customers. Nobody loses what they've earned, and you skip the awkward talk at the counter on switch day.
The Advanced Marketing add-on goes further, with automated emails, customer segments and promotional texts. Its price isn't listed anywhere: get it in writing before you sign.
The catch is cost. Retail starts at $89 a month and climbs to $289, with up to 18% off on yearly billing. For a single small shop, that's the most expensive way to get loyalty in this comparison. Also note that Lightspeed's Restaurant product handles loyalty under different terms, and what we read about it contradicts itself. This listing covers Retail only.
- Loyalty included on all three Retail plans
- Points earned whatever the payment method
- Birthday rewards and VIP status
- Import of balances from an old program
- ✓Nobody loses their points when you switch POS
- ✓In-store and online loyalty in one place
- ✓The deepest feature set in this comparison
- ✗From $89/mo, the priciest entry point here
- ✗Advanced Marketing has no public price
- ✗Doesn't apply to the Restaurant product
The right call if you're switching systems and your customers already hold points. For a first program in a small shop, it's overkill: start with Square or Loyverse.
Odoo
In Odoo, loyalty isn't another app. It's a checkbox in the Point of Sale settings. Tick it, and every sale gives the customer points. When they hit the threshold, a Rewards button shows up on the register screen, and your cashier applies it in one tap.
No other tool here gives you this much control. A reward can be a discount or a free product. It can cover the whole catalog or a few items only, and you set an expiry. So you can give away the coffee but not the pastry, or keep discounts on the items where your margin can take it.
The price is the other good news. The free plan gives you one app with unlimited users, and Point of Sale on its own covers loyalty. Standard, at $31.10 per user per month in year one, only matters once you add a second app such as Inventory.
The downside is setup. Odoo is a full business suite, and getting the catalog, taxes and hardware right takes time. If you just want a stamp card running by Friday, Square or Loyverse will get you there faster.
- Loyalty turned on with one checkbox in Point of Sale
- Discount or free product, on all or some items
- Expiry rules on points
- Free with the Point of Sale app alone
- ✓No loyalty fee at all
- ✓The finest reward rules in this comparison
- ✓Same database as stock and accounting if you add them
- ✗Long setup for a first POS
- ✗Free plan limited to one app
- ✗Taxes, catalog and hardware take time to set up
The best mix of flexibility and price, if you have time to configure it. For a solo owner who wants a program live this week, Square is simpler.
Loyverse
Loyverse puts its loyalty program in the free toolset, and none of its paid add-ons touch it. Those add-ons (unlimited history at $7, employee management at $25, advanced inventory at $25 per month per store) are for other things. For an owner counting every dollar, it's the cheapest way to get points at the register.
The mechanics stay simple: points you configure to bring people back. User reviews praise that simplicity. A rival vendor adds that there are no stamps and no referral rewards. For a neighborhood café, points are often all you need.
What you give up is depth and backup. There are no texts, no tiers and no dashboard comparing members with everyone else, the way Square does it. Loyverse also scores low in our ranking on compliance and features. Use it to start a program, and plan to move up when your regulars become a real share of sales.
- Loyalty in the free version
- No paid add-on needed for loyalty
- Configurable points
- ✓The lowest price in this comparison
- ✓No contract
- ✓Loyalty fully covered by the free plan
- ✗Points only, no tiers or texts
- ✗Low scores on features and compliance
Free and simple, a good first step. Once loyalty becomes a real sales channel for you, Square Plus gives you the tools to run it.
Shopify POS
Shopify POS has no native points program, and that's the first thing to know. POS Pro, at $89 a month per location, adds loyalty insights, not points. To earn and redeem, you need an app from the Shopify App Store. Merchants still vent about it on Shopify's community forum in 2026, pointing out that Square, Clover and Lightspeed have it built in.
The good news: these apps work well in store. Smile.io, one of the most used, supports Shopify POS on every plan. Customers earn at the register and redeem online, or the other way around. One customer account, one balance.
The trap is billing. Smile.io is free up to 200 orders a month, then costs $15 (500 orders), $79 (1,000) or $199 (2,500), and Plus runs $999. One merchant on that forum put it bluntly: "It doesn't make sense when you have tons of small purchases." If your store runs on small tickets, check last year's order count before you pick a plan.
- No native program: an app is required
- Smile.io supports POS on all its plans
- One points balance online and in store
- Loyalty insights with POS Pro
- ✓One balance for online and in-store
- ✓Several loyalty apps to choose from
- ✓Smile.io free up to 200 orders a month
- ✗No native loyalty
- ✗Apps billed by order volume, costly with small tickets
- ✗Two subscriptions to manage
Makes sense if most of your revenue is online on Shopify. For a walk-in store with lots of small tickets, the app bill climbs fast: Square Plus or Loyverse costs less.
The traps you only notice after the first month
What follows comes from our comparison and from merchants on vendor forums. Six things to settle during the trial, not after. If loyalty isn't your only criterion, see the best POS systems, and if you sell by weight or by aisle, POS systems with inventory management.
Which plan unlocks loyalty?
Since 2025, Square loyalty comes with Plus at $49 a month per location, not with Free. On Shopify, no plan includes points, and POS Pro at $89 only adds insights. Read the pricing grid plan by plan, and add up the real monthly cost of loyalty before you compare systems.
Are you billed per order?
Shopify loyalty apps bill by order count. Smile.io is free up to 200 orders a month, then $15, $79 and $199. A store with lots of small purchases climbs that grid quickly. Run the math on last year's ticket count, not on revenue.
How is the customer recognized?
This decides whether your program survives. Typing a phone number slows the line: one merchant calls it too slow during a rush. Square offers a QR code for sign-up and Apple Wallet passes: put the code next to the card reader. Lightspeed credits points whatever the payment method, which keeps cash customers in the program.
How do you stop abuse?
One point per visit with no minimum invites customers to split purchases. A coffee roaster on Square's forum requires $5 to earn a star. Odoo also lets you restrict rewards to certain products and set an expiry: turn on both before launch.
Moving an old program over?
If your customers have points on paper or in another POS, Lightspeed imports old balances. Elsewhere, ask the vendor about an import before you sign. Otherwise, set a cutover date and honor old cards for a few weeks: that's when a regular is most likely to feel shortchanged.
Does it actually pay off?
Compare members and non-members after three months: average ticket and visit frequency. Square's dashboard does it for you. Forum numbers, like the ice cream shop with $27.12 tickets for members, are self-reported. Your own data is the only proof that counts.
- Loyalty is included in your plan, or its price is in writing
- You know whether you pay per plan, per order, or nothing
- Customers get recognized without slowing the line
- A minimum purchase is set to earn a point
- Old program balances are imported, or a transition is planned
- You'll compare member and non-member tickets after three months

Your questions about POS loyalty programs
What is the best POS system with a built-in loyalty program?
Square, if you're on Square Plus: tiers, texts, Apple Wallet and a dashboard that shows whether it pays. Lightspeed Retail includes loyalty on every plan and imports old balances. Odoo and Loyverse include it for free, with more setup or fewer features.
Is Square Loyalty free?
Not on the Free plan. Since Square's 2025 pricing change, loyalty is included in Square Plus at $49 a month per location; Premium at $149 covers nearly all of Square's software. There's a 30-day trial, so you can measure enrollment before committing.
Does Shopify POS have a loyalty program?
Not natively. POS Pro at $89 a month per location adds loyalty insights, not points. You need an app like Smile.io, which supports earning and redeeming in store on all its plans and is free up to 200 orders a month.
How much does a POS loyalty program cost?
From $0 with Loyverse or Odoo Point of Sale, to $49 a month per location with Square Plus, to $89 and up with Lightspeed Retail, where loyalty comes with the POS itself. On Shopify, Smile.io runs from $0 to $199 a month by order volume. Don't forget the rewards themselves: a ten-stamp card gives away one item in ten to your regulars.
Is there a free POS with a loyalty program?
Yes. Loyverse includes points in its free version, and Odoo includes loyalty in its Point of Sale app, free as long as it's the only app you use. Both work, but neither has the texts and tiers that Square Plus offers.
Do I still need a physical loyalty card?
No. Customers get recognized by phone number, by a QR code sign-up, or by a pass in Apple Wallet with Square. Keep a few paper cards only for customers without a smartphone, and enter their points in the POS.
Can I import points from my old loyalty program?
Lightspeed Retail imports point balances from an old program. With other systems, ask about a file import before you sign. If there's none, announce a cutover date and honor old cards for a few weeks.
Clover or Square for loyalty?
Clover offers a rewards feature, but we couldn't read its loyalty pricing on Clover's own pages, and Clover hardware and rates vary by reseller. Square publishes its terms: loyalty in Plus at $49 a month per location. Until Clover shows a clear price, Square is the easier one to budget.
