Which project management software has a real Gantt chart?

Seven tools compared on what makes a Gantt chart useful: dependencies, critical path, milestones, baselines and export.

The short answer: GanttPRO if scheduling is the core of your job. It's the only tool in our comparison with critical path, baselines, milestones and export on its entry plan, at $7 per user. ClickUp if you want the Gantt inside a tool that runs everything else, from $9, but critical path sits on Business. Wrike and Smartsheet for structured teams running several projects at once. Asana and monday.com draw nice Gantt charts, but their serious scheduling features live on upper tiers. TeamGantt charges a flat monthly fee, not per seat.

Here's what most "best Gantt chart software" lists skip: almost every PM tool shows a "Gantt view", but it isn't worth the same on every plan. On the cheapest tier, it's often a bar timeline. Auto-rescheduling when a task slips, the critical path and the baseline comparison show up one or two plans higher, sometimes with seat minimums. We went through each pricing page line by line, then through user forums, to find what you actually pay for. Many of the lists ranking on Google still quote 2023 prices.

Your profile in one line. Project manager, engineering firm or contractor who lives in the schedule: GanttPRO. Team of 5 to 50 that wants one tool: ClickUp. PMO running a portfolio: Wrike or Smartsheet. Team already on Asana or monday.com: stay, but check the plan. Agency that wants to invite clients without paying for seats: TeamGantt.

The table that settles it

Who has a real Gantt chart, and on which plan?

A Gantt chart is a schedule drawn as horizontal bars: one row per task, one bar from start date to end date. Four features make it useful, and pricing pages love to blur them. Dependencies link tasks: if framing slips three days, roofing slips too, without you dragging it. The critical path is the chain of tasks that sets the finish date: one day late on any of them means one day late on the whole project. Milestones mark key dates (a delivery, a client sign-off). A baseline freezes the original schedule so you can compare it with reality and see where things drifted.

The table shows, for each tool, what exists and on which plan. Rank follows how good the Gantt is for scheduling; the score out of 5 is for the whole tool, the same as in our full reviews.

Best pure Gantt tool, complete from the entry plan

GanttPRO

4.1/5

GanttPRO does one thing: Gantt charts. It opens on the schedule, not on a task list or a Kanban board. If you think in weeks, hand-offs and delivery dates, that's a real comfort. You build the plan the way you'd sketch it on a whiteboard.

The pricing is what puts it first. Critical path, baselines, milestones, dependencies and export are included on every plan, Core at $7 per user per month billed yearly included. ClickUp wants Business at $17 for critical path. Asana wants Advanced. Smartsheet keeps baselines for Business at $19. A team of five on Core pays $35 a month. Advanced is $10, Business $17, and Enterprise is $25 with a 5-user minimum and yearly billing only. Monthly prices aren't shown on the page, so ask if you don't want a 12-month commitment.

The limits are plain. There's no free plan, and some reviewers find it pricey for a tiny team that could live with a general tool. Collaboration (comments, discussions, docs) is basic next to ClickUp or monday.com. The pricing page also doesn't list export formats: during your trial, check that the format your client expects actually comes out. Our tip: set the baseline the day the client signs off on the schedule, not a week later. That's the snapshot you'll use to explain every delay.

Standout features
  • Critical path from Core, at $7
  • Baselines to compare planned vs. actual
  • Milestones and dependencies on every plan
  • Opens on the schedule, not a list
+Pros
  • ✓Most complete Gantt at the lowest entry price
  • ✓No scheduling feature locked to a top tier
  • ✓Built for scheduling, not bolted on
−Cons
  • ✗No free plan
  • ✗Basic collaboration next to all-in-one tools
  • ✗Export formats not listed on the pricing page
Verdict

The pick if the schedule is your main work tool. If your team mostly needs tasks, docs and chat, with a Gantt now and then, ClickUp fits better.

Best Gantt inside an all-in-one PM tool

ClickUp

4.2/5

In ClickUp, Gantt is one view out of about fifteen. Your tasks exist once, and you see them as a list, a board, a calendar or a Gantt chart. That's the big win: the schedule stays current because the team works in the same tasks. Dependencies are available on Free, and ClickUp supports several types (waiting on another task's finish, or its start).

The pricing needs a careful read. On Free, the Gantt view is a trial: a limited, cumulative number of uses that never resets, and the pricing page doesn't even say how many. Gantt becomes unlimited on Core, $9 per user per month billed yearly, $12 monthly. But critical path and slack time (how long a task can slip without delaying the project) are only a trial on Core. They're included from Business, $17 yearly or $25 monthly. Gantt export to PDF is Business-only too. For five people who need a real schedule, budget $85 a month, not $45.

Users on ClickUp's feedback board don't hold back. The Gantt view gets slow on big projects; one user called it unusable most of the time before switching tools. Others find the layout harder to read than Smartsheet or monday.com, and you can't enter a dependency by row number like in a spreadsheet. Our tip: on Free, save your Gantt trial uses for a real project, not a demo. And if your projects run past a few hundred tasks, check how fast the view loads during the trial before moving the whole team in.

Standout features
  • Unlimited Gantt from Core, at $9
  • Dependencies on Free
  • Critical path and slack time on Business
  • Gantt PDF export on Business
+Pros
  • ✓Tasks, docs, time and Gantt in one tool
  • ✓Best feature-to-price ratio among all-in-one tools
  • ✓Dependencies without paying
−Cons
  • ✗Critical path and PDF export only on Business
  • ✗Gantt view slows down on big projects
  • ✗Free plan Gantt is a capped trial
Verdict

The right call if Gantt is one view among many in how you work. Plan on Business if you need critical path. Torn with monday.com? Read ClickUp vs monday.

Most complete for running several projects

Wrike

3.4/5

Wrike has one of the most serious Gantt charts among general PM tools. It's interactive from the Team plan at $10 per user per month: drag a bar, and dependent tasks follow. Critical path needs Business, and Wrike keeps Gantt snapshots (the new name for its old baselines) so you can compare today's schedule with the one you launched with. Add team workload and approvals, and you can run a portfolio.

Pricing comes in two steps. Team, at $10, takes 2 to 15 users. Business, at $25 per user, is billed yearly and sold in packs of 5 seats: a team of 12 pays for 15, so $375 a month. The free plan lets you explore the interface, but the pricing page doesn't list Gantt on it.

The trade-off is well known. Wrike takes the longest to learn on this list: dense interface, and a structure of spaces and folders to design before you invite anyone. Ticket support is rated slow on smaller plans. On Wrike's community, one user regrets not being able to track the original plan at subtask level, only at task level. Our tip: if you split work into lots of subtasks, roll key dates up to the task level before you take your snapshot, or the planned vs. actual gap stays hidden.

Standout features
  • Interactive Gantt from Team, at $10
  • Critical path on Business
  • Gantt snapshots to compare planned vs. actual
  • Workload management and approvals
+Pros
  • ✓Strongest Gantt among tools built for big teams
  • ✓Workload and Gantt in the same place
  • ✓Gantt from the first paid plan
−Cons
  • ✗Slowest to learn in this ranking
  • ✗Business billed yearly in packs of 5 seats
  • ✗Original-plan tracking limited at subtask level
Verdict

A good fit for a department that runs several projects and has time to set things up. Small teams move faster with GanttPRO or ClickUp. To compare closely, read ClickUp vs Wrike.

Best for teams who think in spreadsheets

Smartsheet

3.8/5

Smartsheet looks like a spreadsheet, on purpose. Each row is a task with date, duration and predecessor columns, and the Gantt draws itself to the right of the grid. If you've always built schedules in Excel, it's the most natural tool here: same habits, but dates recalculate when a task slips.

Gantt is there from Pro, $9 per member per month billed yearly ($12 monthly), for 1 to 10 members. Baselines only come with Business, $19 yearly ($24 monthly), with a 3-member minimum: $57 a month at the very least. Enterprise and Advanced Work Management are quote-based. Critical path shows up in red on the Gantt, with one catch many people miss: the sheet owner or an admin has to turn on dependencies in the project settings first. Without that, there's no recalculation and no critical path.

The limits come from the same model. Each sheet is a project, and linking projects means building reports or dashboards. Value drops fast once you need baselines, since everyone has to be on Business. Our tip: build one project template with the predecessor column, dependencies on and zero-duration milestones, then duplicate it for every new project. You'll stop redoing the same setup.

Standout features
  • Gantt from Pro, at $9
  • Baselines on Business
  • Critical path highlighted once dependencies are on
  • Predecessors typed like in a spreadsheet
+Pros
  • ✓Most natural for Excel users
  • ✓Dates recalculated through dependencies
  • ✓Very flexible formulas and columns
−Cons
  • ✗Baselines only on Business, 3-member minimum
  • ✗No free plan
  • ✗Multi-project view is up to you to build
Verdict

The right pick if your team wants spreadsheet logic with a real Gantt. Thinking of leaving it? See Smartsheet alternatives.

Nicest Gantt, critical path on Advanced

Asana

3.9/5

Asana built its name on clarity, and its Gantt follows suit. From Starter, you get Timeline, the Gantt view, dependencies and milestones. Personal, the free plan, has none of that. Critical path needs Advanced. For a team running launches, campaigns or product releases, Starter is often enough: you see who does what, when, and what's blocked.

Asana's own forum shows where it struggles on heavier projects. Project managers find the baseline comparison hard to use: no variance column, no filter for tasks running behind plan. Others report a critical path that doesn't always refresh, and is computed in a way that doesn't follow the classic method. It isn't a column you can filter either, and Gantt columns can't be edited. None of that matters for a six-week campaign. It does for an 18-month build.

Two tips from that forum. Link every critical task with dependencies: when one slips, the rest follow, and you see the effect on the end date without waiting on the critical path calculation. And add a custom "critical" field you check by hand, so you can filter those tasks in list view. Asana's public pricing page shows Starter and Advanced per user: compare it with GanttPRO seats for just your schedulers before moving the whole team to Advanced.

Standout features
  • Gantt, dependencies and milestones from Starter
  • Critical path on Advanced
  • Clean Timeline for short projects
  • None of it on the free plan
+Pros
  • ✓Most readable Gantt for non-specialists
  • ✓Dependencies and milestones on the first paid plan
  • ✓Great PM tool for everything else
−Cons
  • ✗Critical path only on Advanced
  • ✗Baseline comparison hard to act on
  • ✗Gantt columns can't be edited
Verdict

Good for projects of a few weeks to a few months. For a long schedule with a reliable critical path, GanttPRO or Wrike hold up better.

Easiest Gantt to roll out, on the right plan

monday.com

4.0/5

monday.com is the tool your coworkers will adopt fastest. The Gantt plugs into any board with a date column, and nobody needs training to read it. But pricing has three steps. Free and Basic ($9) have no Gantt and no Timeline. Gantt starts on Standard, $12 per seat per month billed yearly. Dynamic dependencies, the kind that push later tasks when one slips, need Pro at $19. With a 3-seat minimum, Gantt costs at least $36 a month, and Gantt with dependencies $57.

Critical path and baselines are advertised in the Gantt view, but the pricing page doesn't say which plan, and we couldn't find it in writing elsewhere from the vendor: ask for it in writing before you pay. The monday.com community also points to a concrete limit. Critical path stayed in beta for a long time, and it won't display for a single group when that group's items depend on items in other groups. Support confirmed it. Baselines, on the other hand, landed on the Gantt view and the Gantt dashboard widget.

Our tip from those threads: if your dependencies cross groups (one phase per group, say), show the critical path for the whole board, not group by group. And don't buy Standard thinking you'll schedule seriously. Without dynamic dependencies, you'll drag every bar by hand at the first delay.

Standout features
  • Gantt and Timeline from Standard
  • Dynamic dependencies on Pro
  • Gantt widget on dashboards
  • 3-seat minimum on paid plans
+Pros
  • ✓Easiest Gantt to get a team using
  • ✓Schedule lives where the work is
  • ✓Clear dashboards for leadership
−Cons
  • ✗Dynamic dependencies only on Pro
  • ✗Critical path breaks when dependencies cross groups
  • ✗Real cost inflated by the 3-seat minimum
Verdict

Good for a team that wants to see the schedule, less so for a PM who has to hold it to the day. Go Pro or skip it. Torn with Wrike? Read Wrike vs monday.

Best flat-fee plan for sharing with clients

TeamGantt

3.8/5

TeamGantt isn't sold per seat but as a flat fee, and that changes the math. Base, at $59 a month ($589 a year), covers 1 manager, 10 collaborators, 5 projects and 150 tasks per project. Business, $120 a month ($1,140 a year), goes up to 500 tasks per project. Builder Edition, $199 a month ($1,908 a year), is built for construction, with 10 projects. The free Personal plan stops at 1 user, 1 project and 40 tasks: enough to judge the interface, not to run a real project.

The Gantt is simple drag-and-drop, with advanced dependencies on paid plans, lockable milestones and an actual vs. estimated view. Its rare strength: export to CSV, PDF and Microsoft Project. If your client or general contractor still lives in MS Project, few tools on this list help as much. Users rate it highly, especially for how fast teams pick it up.

The limits are clear. Some users miss a critical path indicator, and we couldn't confirm one on the pricing page, so don't count on it. Cost climbs once your team or project count outgrows the plan, and the Microsoft Teams integration is limited. Our tip: think in projects and tasks, not people. An agency running 4 projects of 120 tasks fits in Base. One running 8 needs a higher plan.

Standout features
  • Flat fee, not per seat
  • Export to CSV, PDF and Microsoft Project
  • Lockable milestones and actual vs. estimated
  • Construction-focused edition
+Pros
  • ✓Very easy to pick up
  • ✓Clients and collaborators invited without per-seat cost
  • ✓Microsoft Project export
−Cons
  • ✗No clearly offered critical path
  • ✗Project and task caps per plan
  • ✗Free plan limited to 1 project of 40 tasks
Verdict

The right pick for an agency that shares schedules with clients. If you need critical path, GanttPRO costs less for a small team.

Before you sign

What to check before you pay for a Gantt chart

These checks come from reading every pricing page and the user forums of monday.com, Asana, ClickUp and Wrike. Run them during the trial, on a real project. For a ranking of PM tools without the Gantt filter, see the best project management software, and for a small company, PM tools for small businesses. Gantt is just one feature: see also time tracking and client portals in PM tools.

A Gantt view isn't a schedule

A bar timeline without dependencies is a drawing. The day a task runs three days late, you move every following task by hand. Check that dependencies actually push later tasks on the plan you'll pay for: on monday.com, that's Pro only.

Critical path, on which plan?

GanttPRO: every plan. ClickUp: Business. Asana: Advanced. Wrike: Business. Zoho Projects, which we didn't rank because its pricing page wasn't readable, keeps critical path and baselines for Enterprise and Ultimate. The headline price almost never includes it.

Does the baseline actually help?

A baseline you can't filter or compare in columns is decoration. That's the complaint from Asana users. During the trial, set a baseline, push three tasks, and see whether the tool shows you the gap at a glance. On Smartsheet, baselines need Business.

How many seats at minimum?

monday.com needs 3, Smartsheet Business 3, GanttPRO Enterprise 5, and Wrike Business sells in packs of 5. For two people, a $19 seat costs you $57. Always multiply by the minimum, not your headcount. TeamGantt, as a flat fee, sidesteps this.

The export your client expects

A general contractor or enterprise client may ask for a clean PDF or an MS Project file. ClickUp keeps Gantt PDF export for Business. TeamGantt exports to CSV, PDF and MS Project. Ask your client for the format before you choose, not the night before the site meeting.

What about Excel or Microsoft Project?

A Gantt in Excel has no real dependencies: nothing recalculates when a date moves, and you trace the critical path by hand. Microsoft Project is still the reference for heavy scheduling, with a desktop client. If you want out, see Microsoft Project alternatives. GanttProject and ProjectLibre are free desktop options, without online teamwork.

  • Gantt is included in the plan you'll pay for, not just the one above
  • Dependencies push later tasks automatically
  • Critical path shows up and stays right when you change a date
  • Baseline shows planned vs. actual, task by task
  • Milestones stand apart from tasks and can be locked
  • Export comes out in the format your client expects
  • Price is calculated with the seat minimum
  • The Gantt view stays fast on your biggest project

FAQ

Your questions about Gantt chart software

  • What is the best project management software with a Gantt chart?

For serious scheduling, GanttPRO: critical path, baselines, milestones and export from Core, at $7 per user. For a tool that also handles tasks, docs and time, ClickUp, as long as you take Business for critical path. For a project portfolio, Wrike.

  • Is there free Gantt chart software?

Yes, with limits. TeamGantt is free for 1 user and 1 project of 40 tasks. ClickUp opens Gantt as a trial on its free plan, with uses that don't reset. On desktop, GanttProject and ProjectLibre are free, without online collaboration. monday.com and Asana have no Gantt on their free plans.

  • What's the difference between a Gantt chart and the critical path?

The Gantt shows every task over time; the critical path is the chain of tasks that sets the finish date. A task off the critical path has slack: it can slip without delaying the project. A critical task has none. That's why a Gantt without critical path tells you when, not where to look.

  • Is an Excel Gantt chart good enough?

For a 15-task project you run alone, yes. Past that, Excel doesn't handle dependencies: when a date moves, nothing shifts, and critical path is manual. Once several people edit the file, versions multiply. A free option like TeamGantt for one project or GanttProject on desktop does better at no cost.

  • Can these tools export to Microsoft Project?

TeamGantt exports to Microsoft Project format, plus CSV and PDF, which helps when a client still works in MS Project. For the others, check with your own file during the trial. For a full move away, read Microsoft Project alternatives.

  • Which Gantt chart software works for construction?

One with reliable dependencies, milestones and baselines, because a job is judged on its delays. GanttPRO has all three on its entry plan. TeamGantt sells a construction edition at a flat fee. For a full ranking, see project management software for construction.

  • What is a baseline in a Gantt chart?

A frozen copy of the schedule, taken when it's approved. The tool then shows planned bars under actual bars so you see every slip. Set it on sign-off day, and only reset it after a signed scope change, or you wipe your history of delays.

  • How much does Gantt software cost for a team of 5?

With critical path or dependencies that push tasks, per month billed yearly: $35 for GanttPRO (Core), $85 for ClickUp (Business), $95 for monday.com (Pro), $95 for Smartsheet with baselines (Business), $125 for Wrike (Business). TeamGantt is $59 a month flat, up to 10 collaborators.
