Avalara alternatives: where to go and how to leave without missing a return

Eight destinations, one per reason for leaving, and an eight-step migration plan.

The short answer: Numeral or Kintsugi if you want to pay per return ($75) instead of per state, TaxJar for a small US store, TaxCloud for budget filing, Zamp if you want sales tax run for you, Quaderno if you also sell to Europe, Stripe Tax if every payment already goes through Stripe, and Vertex if you run SAP or Oracle. Before you pick, check your renewal date: it decides the day you can leave. We compared all eight and checked their prices in 2026.

The real reasons

Why teams leave Avalara, and why it's hard

Avalara covers more countries and systems than anyone, and its calculation engine has a good name. People rarely leave over the math. They leave over the bill, the contract and support. Six reasons, all checked in 2026.

A price per state, three states minimum

Avalara Select, the public small-business offer, costs $79 per state per month or $799 per state per year, with a three-state minimum per filing entity. That's at least $237 a month, or $2,397 a year, even if you only have nexus in one state. Every new state adds a line. The SST plan ($69 per state, no minimum) applies only in the 25 Streamlined Sales Tax states.

Anything beyond US sales tax is quoted

The public price list covers US sales tax only. IOSS (one monthly return for all 27 EU countries, with Avalara as intermediary), VAT registrations and VAT returns have no listed price. If you sell abroad, you're negotiating.

An annual contract that renews itself

The contract is annual, and a missed notice window restarts a full year. Your exact terms are in your order form. Read it before you choose a new tool, not after.

Support rated well below the product

On review sites the product scores well and support noticeably lower. The same complaints keep coming back: slow replies, tickets lost between teams, and more manual reconciliation than promised. One r/ecommerce commenter put it plainly: the sales team grew much faster than the support team.

Too much tool for a small need

Avalara Select is for businesses under $50 million in annual revenue. A store filing in three states each quarter pays for a machine it uses a fraction of. That's the line sellers repeat most when they start looking elsewhere.

What you lose when the contract ends

Your access to history ends with your contract. Filed returns, transaction detail, remittances and exemption certificates: if you haven't exported them before the end date, you'll be asking for them. And certificate images don't move on their own from Avalara to another tool.

The 8 alternatives

Avalara alternatives, tool by tool

For each tool: why you'd switch, who it fits, its catch, how to move from Avalara, and its price as read on its official page in 2026.

01

Numeral: you want to pay per return, month to month

Pay per filing, no contract

Why switch to Numeral. Avalara Select charges $79 per state per month with a three-state minimum, so you pay $237 a month before a single return goes out. Numeral bills per action: $75 per filing and $150 per registration, once per state. Standard accounts are month to month with no required contract, and you can cancel any time without a penalty. It's also the name Shopify merchants mention most often after leaving Avalara.

Who it's for. Online sellers with nexus (the obligation to collect, triggered by your sales into a state) in a handful of states that file quarterly or annually.

Who it's not for. A business filing monthly in a dozen states: at $75 a return, per-filing pricing can end up above a flat plan.

The catch. International VAT and GST (90+ countries) sits in Enterprise only, priced by quote.

How to move. Start on free monitoring, which reruns your nexus study from your real sales. Compare it with the states Avalara files for you, then hand over your existing registrations instead of opening new ones.

02

Kintsugi: you sell into the US and Canada

US and Canada per action

Why switch to Kintsugi. Same per-action logic as Numeral: $75 per action in the US and Canada, whether that's a registration, a return, a back filing, an amendment or a deregistration. The free plan needs no card. It monitors your exposure in the US and 100+ countries and categorizes your products, but it doesn't file anything.

Who it's for. Sellers with Canadian customers too (GST, HST, PST, QST), which Starter covers at the same per-action price.

Who it's not for. Anyone who wants EU and UK VAT on a public price: the Scale and Premium plans that cover them are quoted.

The catch. Kintsugi publishes many of the "Avalara alternatives" articles ranking on page one, and puts itself first in all of them. Judge it on its price list, not on those articles. Some reviews also mention calculations that needed fixing and uneven support.

How to move. Open the free plan and import your sales. Then check your Avalara renewal dates, pick a clean handover period, connect your state accounts and turn off Avalara filing state by state.

03

TaxJar: your US store is still small

Small US store

Why switch to TaxJar. It's the simplest tool here. Starter is $39 a month and Professional $99 a month, both at the 200-orders tier. AutoFile is counted in credits: 2 a year on Starter ($50 per extra credit), 4 on Professional ($55). One merchant on r/ecommerce says it took about half a day to connect to Shopify.

Who it's for. Small online stores that sell mostly inside the US and feel Avalara is far too big for them.

Who it's not for. Anyone who needs VAT: TaxJar no longer offers international calculations to new customers and points them to Stripe Tax.

The catch. Four credits a year are used up by one state filing quarterly. Every return after that is paid separately.

How to move. The trial runs 30 days with no card. Connect your store, import this year's orders and compare the totals with your Avalara returns before you switch on the first filing.

04

TaxCloud: you want US filing on a tight budget

Budget US filing

Why switch to TaxCloud. TaxCloud advertises plans from as low as $20 per filing, with filing services starting at $39 a month. Annual billing saves up to 16% against monthly. Extra users are free, and service doesn't pause when you go over your limits: extra orders and returns are billed at your tier's rate. In one r/ecommerce thread, a seller who left Avalara says TaxCloud was easier, cheaper and better supported.

Who it's for. Shopify and Stripe sellers who need return-ready reports for every state and access to the Streamlined Sales Tax program.

Who it's not for. Sellers outside the US or with VAT to handle: TaxCloud is a US tool.

The catch. Plan prices aren't listed on the page, so you'll talk to sales. Paying by card adds a 7% fee, and unused filings don't roll over.

How to move. Use the 30-day trial (Premium features, no card, no filing) to run your real orders through it while Avalara still files.

05

Zamp: you want someone else to run sales tax

Done for you

Why switch to Zamp. Zamp sells a managed service, not software you operate. Its team handles calculations, nexus monitoring, state registrations, filing and remittance, and state notices. It states no per-transaction fees and no surprise invoices when you add a state. If you're mid-contract, its pricing page tells you to ask about a buyout of your Avalara term.

Who it's for. Finance teams that left Avalara because they were doing the reconciliation themselves.

Who it's not for. Sellers outside the US and Canada: Zamp covers those two only.

The catch. No public price at all. Every paid plan is "contact sales", so you can't compare before a call.

How to move. Start with the free one-time nexus analysis and liability estimate. Zamp says it moves your registrations and history and cuts over at a period boundary, which is the right way to do it.

06

Quaderno: you also sell to Europe

US plus EU VAT

Why switch to Quaderno. Avalara's public price list only covers US sales tax, and VAT is quoted. Quaderno calculates sales tax, VAT and GST at checkout, issues the right invoice for each country and prepares the EU One Stop Shop (OSS) report by country and rate. Users, jurisdictions and integrations are unlimited from the Startup plan.

Who it's for. Small teams selling digital products or online goods to consumers in the US and Europe.

Who it's not for. A large US seller with thousands of orders a month in twenty states.

The catch. Price follows transactions: 25 a month on Hobby, 250 on Startup, 1,000 on Business, 2,500 on Growth, and you move up a tier when you go over. Filing is a separate service, quoted.

How to move. Connect Stripe, Shopify or your billing tool and add your registrations. Quaderno calculates from the day you connect it, so keep Avalara on the open period.

07

Stripe Tax: your payments already run on Stripe

Already on Stripe

Why switch to Stripe Tax. No integration project: you turn it on inside Stripe. Tax Basic is 0.5% per transaction through Checkout, Billing, Invoicing or Payment Links, or 50¢ per API transaction, with no subscription, and only where you're registered. Tax Complete adds registrations and filings from $90 a month on a one-year contract (2 registrations and 4 filings a year on the first tier).

Who it's for. SaaS companies and stores that take every payment through Stripe.

Who it's not for. Anyone filing in many states: the first tier includes only 4 filings a year, and the next one jumps to $430 a month.

The catch. Outside the US, Stripe files only Canada's simplified GST/HST and EU Non-Union OSS.For other countries it relies on partner integrations.

How to move. Add your existing registrations in Stripe Tax settings before switching calculation on, or it won't collect anything.

08

Vertex: you run SAP or Oracle

Enterprise ERP

Why switch to Vertex. It's the one competitor at Avalara's scale. Vertex O Series calculates sales, use and VAT on both sales and purchases, with rules for 19,000 jurisdictions. You can run it on premise, in the cloud (AWS, Oracle Cloud, Azure) or in a hybrid edge setup close to your systems.

Who it's for. Enterprises invoicing out of SAP, Oracle or another heavy ERP in many countries.

Who it's not for. A small business: you'd change vendors without changing the size of the bill.

The catch. No public price and a real implementation project. Peer reviews call it a leader at a premium price, with implementation support that could be better.

How to move. Treat it like an ERP project: map tax codes, run a real quarter in parallel with Avalara, and cut over at the start of a fiscal year.

Migration plan

Leave Avalara in eight steps

Order matters. Each step protects something: your money, your history, your exemptions and, above all, an unbroken run of returns.

01

Read your contract before anything else

Day 1

Open your Avalara order form and write down three things: the renewal date, the notice period and how to cancel (form, email, account manager). Send your non-renewal notice in writing as soon as you decide, and keep the confirmation. If a competitor offers to buy out the rest of your term, get the terms in writing.

Time
one hour
If you skip it
another full year
02

Export everything that belongs to you

Before the end date

Download filed returns (PDF), transaction and remittance detail (CSV or spreadsheet), and the list of registrations by state with filing frequencies. Large reports are built in the background and don't stay in the downloads tab forever, so grab them right away. Store everything outside both tools, by jurisdiction and period.

Format
PDF and CSV
If you skip it
an audit with no records
03

Pull the exemption certificates themselves

Before the end date

If you sell to resellers or exempt buyers, your audit defense is their certificates. Export the certificate files, not just the list, with their expiration dates. Images don't transfer on their own to another tool, so plan time to reattach them to customers in the new one.

Keep
file plus expiration date
If you skip it
tax due on audit
04

Keep your registrations, don't redo them

Week 1

Your state sales tax permits belong to your company, not to Avalara. Hand the numbers and portal logins to your new provider instead of registering again. While you're at it, rerun your nexus study with Numeral's or Kintsugi's free monitoring: you may have states to close, or to open.

Cost
usually none
Win
no new registrations
05

Pick a cutover date right after a deadline

Week 2

Each period should belong to one tool only. Switch right after you file: the first week of the month if you file monthly, the week after quarter-end if you file quarterly.

Rule
one period, one tool
If you skip it
a double filing
06

Run both tools for one period

One period

Connect the new tool to your sales and let it calculate for a full period while Avalara still files. Compare totals by jurisdiction. A gap almost always comes from a product tax code copied wrong or an exempt customer left out.

Check
total by jurisdiction
Length
one month or quarter
07

File the first return with the new tool

Next deadline

Turn off Avalara filing for each jurisdiction you've handed over, then let the new tool file. Afterwards, check each state portal: the return should show as received and the payment should have cleared for the right amount.

08

Close Avalara after one clean cycle

Contract end

Close the account only after one period filed cleanly by the new tool and exports you've checked. Then uninstall the Avalara connectors from your store or ERP, or they'll keep adding tax at checkout. Keep your archive: states can look back several years on sales tax.

Migration pitfalls

What makes an Avalara exit go wrong

The same mistakes show up in seller forums and in vendors' migration guides. None of them is technical. They're calendar mistakes.

Missing the renewal date

The most expensive one: a full year. Write down the date and notice period on day one, and cancel in writing.

Cutting over mid-period

A period split between two tools ends in a double return, or none at all. Always switch right after a deadline.

Assuming the calculator files

Stripe Tax Basic doesn't file, and TaxJar won't calculate VAT for new customers. Check who files what, state by state, before you cancel.

Forgetting exemption certificates

An exempt sale without a certificate becomes taxable on audit. Export the files before your contract ends.

Registering twice

A second registration in a state leaves you two accounts to close later. Reuse the permits you have.

Leaving Avalara connectors installed

An old connector on Shopify or your ERP keeps adding tax to the cart. Remove it on cutover day.

  • Renewal date and notice period written down, non-renewal sent in writing
  • Returns, transactions and remittances exported out of Avalara
  • Exemption certificate files saved with expiration dates
  • Registrations listed by state with filing frequency
  • Nexus study rerun on a free monitoring plan
  • Cutover date set right after a deadline
  • One period calculated in parallel and compared
  • First return confirmed on each state portal
  • Avalara connectors removed from store and ERP
  • Archive stored for several years
FAQ · 8 questions

Avalara alternatives: frequently asked questions

  • What is the best alternative to Avalara?

It depends on what you paid Avalara for. For US sales tax at a small or mid-size seller, Numeral or Kintsugi at $75 per return with no state minimum. For a tight budget, TaxCloud from $20 per filing. For a managed service, Zamp. For enterprise ERP, Vertex is the only competitor at the same scale. Our international sales tax software ranking scores each tool by profile.

  • How much does Avalara cost for a small business?

At least $237 a month for US sales tax. Avalara Select costs $79 per state per month ($799 a year) with a three-state minimum per filing entity. The SST plan drops to $69 per state with no minimum, but only in the 25 member states. VAT, OSS and IOSS are quoted.

  • Can I cancel Avalara mid-contract?

Usually not: the contract is annual and renews automatically. You can refuse the renewal if you respect the notice period in your order form. Some competitors, such as Zamp, offer to buy out the rest of your term. Get those terms in writing.

  • Is there a free alternative to Avalara?

For monitoring, yes. Numeral and Kintsugi both have free plans that track your nexus and alert you when you cross a threshold, and Zamp offers a free one-time nexus analysis. None of them files for free: filing starts at $75 per return on Numeral and Kintsugi.

  • Can Stripe Tax replace Avalara?

For calculation, often. For filing, only partly. Tax Complete starts at $90 a month with 4 filings a year, and outside the US Stripe files only Canada's simplified GST/HST and EU Non-Union OSS. If you're thinking about leaving Stripe as well, our guide to switching from Stripe covers the payment side.

  • TaxJar or Avalara: which one should I pick?

TaxJar if you're a small store selling mostly in the US: $39 a month and a 30-day trial. Avalara if you have many states, an ERP or international sales. Note that TaxJar no longer offers international calculations to new customers.

  • How do I get my data out of Avalara before I leave?

Export three sets before the contract ends: filed returns as PDFs, transaction and remittance detail as CSV, and exemption certificate files with their dates. Transaction exports start from the Transactions page of the portal. Large reports land in the downloads tab and don't stay there indefinitely.

  • What if Avalara is wired into Make or my ERP?

Plan the connector replacement before you cancel. List every scenario or ERP call that hits AvaTax. Our Avalara AvaTax on Make page covers that integration, so you can list what you'll rebuild in the new tool.
